There was a British movie I saw many years ago called THE HOLE. As far as I know it wasn't a huge success, even though it starred Thora Birch and Keira Knightley (this was pre PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) - she flashes her boobs, boys - but I enjoyed it.

Anyway, take that movie and add some clever props like SAW, and this is the story in a nutshell.

I wanted to like this one more than I did, sadly.
I figured out the twist way before the end and everything after that just felt like a build-up to what I already knew.
And, seriously, I got so sick of some of the slang...
'Kinda annoying, bruh, innit?'

Not a bad effort, but nothing noteworthy for me - I'm sure I will not remember this story next year.

I really like IRW and have read quite a few of his books. This one had been sitting on my kindle for a couple of years, and I decided to read it this week, just for a break from the Splatter kind, I usually read.

Although I enjoyed this book, it wasn’t one of IRW’s best. Had a plot which I’d seen many times before in movies and books, and also I’d figured out the “baddie” AND the person who had set up the whole escape room, before I’d got halfway through the book.

For me, it wasn’t very suspenseful, and didn’t keep me guessing. But I love IRW and will continue to read his books.

'Hello! Are you still there? Please come. He left me in the woods. I’m… I’m going to try and find the road. I think I hear a car. Please come.'

If I never see the words "bruh" and "slag" again, it will still be too soon.

Escape! was a quick, somewhat elementary story which had strong Saw vibes...i.e. some holier-than-thou figure righting wrongs in a very grisly manner. It was a vaguely fun read, but it honestly didn't hold my attention. Told only from Cheryl's perspective, I found myself becoming very frustrated with her inability to act...ever. She was a woefully pitiful character.

And, unfortunately, the person responsible for the escape room was blatantly obvious, nearly from the first 20 pages.

The conclusion? Meh.

Recommended to those who enjoy short, quirky horror stories...hopefully you'll find more enjoyment than I did.

Six office colleagues get an opportunity to go on an outing. Unlike most of the extravagant trips, this time they invited to play a game. A panic room was set up, and each of the member/participant is bound to play in order to get out of the room.

Cheryl was never a part of that trip but something happened, and she went there. It turns out this panic room was completely underground and was more than just a single room. There were creepy cells and by each were these cryptic messages from the game sponsors.Soon after they start to decode these mysterious messages, it becomes more evident that someone was keeping a clean track of their previous deeds and secrets.

Each one of them (except Cheryl) committed a crime and never really got any punishment for the same. The panic rise to a crescendo when one by one, they get murdered after confessing their crimes.

What was supposed to be just a fun weekend get away turned out to be a stage for the display of their true colors? The only way out of this hell hole was acknowledging the acts committed to bury the ultimate truth.

Cheryl was an innocent bystander among the group of murderers, opportunists and criminals, some of them aiding and abetting. And now that she was struck with them with no hope of getting out, she desperately tries to solve puzzles before time runs out. As the final cell opens and all the facts are out in the open, Cheryl realizes that she should have been afraid of the one person who she thought was helping to get out and not the panic room.

Can she find the way out? After being bloodied and bruised and nearly getting killed will escape or be buried alive along with others?

This was the first book I read by the author and I cannot wait to read his other works. Absolutely amazing and gripping from the very beginning.A labyrinth of shocking twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. And just when you know you are arriving at the conclusion, bam, a clever cliffhanger is introduced. I must say I was not expecting that particular ending.

Really enjoyed reading this book, and it was surely five stars read.

Can you figure out the secret and escape before it's too late? Cheryl wants to get to know her co-workers. That's the only reason she agreed to go on a 'company outing.' She and six of her colleagues are going to be locked inside a room with only their wits to help them. If they escape in time, there'll be prize money. Fail, and the repercussions might be deadly.
Cheryl, the "star" of our story was having a really hard time after losing her father to a sudden heart attack. She has dropped out of school to be closer to her mother and had pretty much put her life on hold. When she decided to join a few of her coworkers on a company weekend trip, she was excited. It was rather sad that she lost this spark of excitement throughout the remainder of the book, but it helped the reader to feel empathy for Cheryl.

Six office colleagues get an opportunity to go on this outing. Unlike most of the other extravagant trips they had shared, this time they had been invited to play a game. A "panic room" was set up, and each of the participants had to play in order for them to get out of the room.

Cheryl was never supposed to be a part of this trip, but something happened, that she included herself. As it turns out the panic room was completely underground and consisted of more than one room. There were creepy cells, and each held a cryptic message from the sponsors of the game. After they start to decode these mysterious messages, it becomes more evident that someone was keeping track of some of their previous deeds and secrets.

Each one of them, except Cheryl, had committed a crime, but had never been punishment for it. The panic rose to a high level when one by one, they begin to be "punished" and then murdered, after they confess their crimes. What was supposed to have been a fun weekend had turned into a stage to display their true natures. The only way out of this hell hole was by acknowledging the acts committed in order to bury the truth. Cheryl was really an innocent bystander in this group of murderers, opportunists and criminals, some of them were aiding and abetting. Now she was struck with all of them without any real hope of getting out. She desperately tries to solve the puzzles before the time runs out. When the final cell opens and all the facts are out, Cheryl realizes that the one person who she thought was helping her to get out is the one she should have been afraid of all along. Now she has to wonder if she can ever find her way out or will she be buried alive?

This is the third book that I have read by this author. He is an absolutely amazing writer, and his stories are gripping from beginning to end with shocking twists and turns that kept you glued to, and turning the pages. I have to confess that I was not expecting this particular ending. An absolutely well-earned 5-stars read. On to number four.

This is fun and entertaining, which is great and why I read. It's not the kind of story where I fell in love with any of the characters.... But it's still a solid 4 star book.
An Escape Room gone wrong on a company weekend retreat. It makes you wonder if the people you work with everyday have any dark secrets.....

*I received this audio book from the narrator in exchange for a honest review. *

This is the first thing I've read or listened to by this author. His name has came across my GR feed from several of my friends. So why not?
The story was interesting enough and kept my attention. I did have a guess as to what was going on before it was ever revealed but i did not guess who was behind it. There wasn't a lot of gore or torture.
Aubrey Parsons narrates the story and it took me a while to get use to his voice. He does this super cartoon-ish voice for one of the characters. All i could think of was the Doug cartoon from the 90's.
I would listen to more of Iain Rob Wright's books in the future.

That would make a good film.
As a story it felt unoriginal, a mix of SAW, and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. For me it was a predictable mystery but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Oh wow, I really enjoyed this book. Sure the blurb and title pretty much give the story away, not to mention it’s easy to right off the bat assume those chosen for the room have been chosen for a reason. This makes the heroines last minute inclusion a truly scary thing. I loved how this played out and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The buildup was both intense and I was pretty shocked by the ‘who’ in the end. I may have briefly given the “who” a thought but I quickly wrote them off only to be wholly surprised. Not to mention there’s a whole real world corporate connection to the whole thing which just took it to a whole other level. Really great read from start to finish, it only built in excitement and I’m sad it ended.

A very gripping story, however you can guess the plot twists, some of them are very predictable. The main character is a bit annoying in my opinion and some lines, especially in the end, were so cringe worthy: “I don’t swallow, I spit” 🙄🙄🙄
Overall an entertaining book, you can give it a try, it’s rather short.

An entertaining little read that validated my hatred of "team building" activities and escape rooms. If you enjoyed the movie Saw but didn't really care for the moralistic side this one might work for you, Escape! Is a revenge fantasy type of deal.

3.5 ⭐ = Quite Good

If you have seen any of the Saw films, the concept is very similar. In fact, this would make an excellent film
Fast paced and easy to read. Just the ending I wasn't over keen on.

Summary

Cheryl has been working at a company for the past 3 months and has barely gotten to know any of her co-workers. So when she's invited on a company overnight trip she hesitantly agrees.
Upon arriving at the escape room themed event, Cheryl begins to uncover deadly secrets about her coworkers.
This is no ordinary game and not everyone will make it out alive.

Personal Opinion

A fun but deadly twist on a weekend team skill building trip.
While being a bit more on the predictable side with a very suspicious company behind the free trip and cash prize offer for the attendees, Escape was a very entertaining read. There was also a pretty interesting twist revealed at the end with a good overall message.
There were quite a bit of 'bruh's', 'innit's' and 'slag' mentions which I'm guessing are terms more popular in the UK.
Overall, this is my second Iain Rob Wright book that I very much enjoyed.

Wow.

That’s all I have to say. Wow!! I did NOT expect this to be so good!

So escape rooms are kinda my jam. Escape Room was my favourite movie of 2019. Combine them with horror and mysteries and plot twists? My perfect book. I’m not sure why, maybe because of this perfect formula, but I expected this book to be a let-down.

I’m happy to report that it was anything but. I loved the range of characters - Cheryl was a great protagonist - and I loved the puzzles and I loved loved loved Monty and the plot twists! And that ending? Couldn’t have been better. Honestly this was so engaging and I loved it a lot.

My only complaint was the spelling mistakes that could have been proofread for, but other than that all I can say is go read this!

*final read of 2021*
light 3.5 stars. would be a 3 stars because it was a little bit predictable and I kind of hated all of the characters except one lol but i guess that's the point? BUT the audiobook narrator did a really great job (I actually really liked the British-isms in the book), the pacing was fast, it was a quick read, and i somewhat liked the set up of a potential continuation which bumped it up half a star.

just in case there are definitely some TW's though: conversation of SA, attempted SA

"Death had always been a surprise for Cheryl. Until today. Today she saw it coming, approaching down a narrow alleyway with no hope of escaping it."

This one was so good, if you like movies such as Saw or Escape Room, you'll love this. While I figured out who the culprit was, and who set everything up fairly early, it was still a great read that ended far top quickly.
Now, here's why I knocked a star off the rating (and yes, this is me being verrry picky). I am English, living in Essex/London. I hear idiots talk all the time, and I absolutely hate the accent round here, I hate the constant "bruh/mate" etc. So reading a book filled with characters who spoke like that made me want to pull my eyes out of my head. Like I said, picky. But I think if I'd read the words "mash you up" one more time, I think I would have actually gone mad. Other than that, this book was awesome.

I want off this ride - wait, no, no, no, no I definitely don’t want off. But I can’t look. Okay I’m looking.

How well do you really know those around you? The ones you call your co-workers? Sometimes you spend more time with them than your own families, but do you ever really know anyone?

You’re gonna need a Xanax and a shot for this one. This is an escape room book that is much more like the Saw movies. There’s blood, guts, and lots of death.

This was the exact book I was looking for and Wright did not disappoint. Horror and thriller lovers will love this one.

Cheryl had only been working at this company for three months but still she was a bit hurt when her co-workers were invited to an escape room and she wasn’t. Luckily, one of Cheryl’s co-workers says she can’t make it and gives Cheryl her spot.

Now Cheryl finds herself locked in an escape room with co-workers she doesn’t really know all that well. What’s worse, they all share a secret and Cheryl was never supposed to be here. Because what this person has planned for the group is nothing short of killer and by the end Cheryl is going to know everything she needs to know about the people she works beside.

I loved this one! The rooms, clues, and mystery were all great. While this wasn’t a typical escape room - only 1 clue/puzzle per door - there’s enough action and intrigue that keeps you hooked throughout.

Def wanna read more from this author. Found a handful of typos but being self-published (I think) I’ll let it slide 😆

This was so great! It was a tense, gruesome, pulse pounding read with puzzles which is exactly what I wanted.

My only complaint was that there were a couple of moments that I had to suspend my disbelief about characters not knowing something just because they couldn't see it (I felt like they probably should have heard it).

Justice. It’s an important theme of this book.

I didn’t know what to think when it first started, but once things started to take off, I couldn’t stop listening. I binged the entire audiobook in one setting. Cheryl is the new girl at the office. She wants to fit in, but it seems as if no matter how hard she tries, she doesn’t connect with her coworkers. When a “company outing” announces everyone’s name but hers, she’s off put. Thanks to a mixup, she ends up going, and wishes more than anything that she hadn’t.

This is a suspenseful read plotwise and characterwise. When the story begins, we don’t know much about any of the characters, but as the story trudges along, we’re given the backstory to each and why they’ve landed themselves in the escape room. Everyone has secrets, each secret worse than the last.

There’s plenty of torture and gore, the perfect dash of horror to compliment the suspense.

Aubrey Parsons’ narration was perfect, bringing the characters to life. He had a unique voice for each male character which I found especially interesting.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Interesting read

This is definitely an interesting read about a "team building" weekend in an escape room. Cheryl ends up being an extra person for the weekend. What follows is definitely not your average escape room tests.
I have to admit I'm a serious fan of the author and usually grab his books as soon as they come out. This one is one that will keep you guessing till the bitter end.

Ignoring (for now) the fact that it's littered with some strange errors, Escape! manages to reap many scares. It is an interesting thriller/horror hybrid, and it's a lot of fun that's fantastically plotted and handled. Being firmly lodged in my own material for most of the year—while also editing/proofing many manuscripts for others—I haven't focused much on just reading novels for pleasure. But with a Kindle Unlimited free trial nearing its end, I decided to hop on this particular story. And I'm glad I did...

Escape! is an addictive, twisty story that I tried to deny at first but soon got sucked up into its world within mere pages. However, there are several botches in the book...which is incredibly confusing...since Iain Rob Wright has been at it for quite some time. If he's reading this and is curious—or if anybody else is, for that matter—here are but just a few:

"Ha! See? You're ballsack ain't no bigger than mine." (Page 92 — Chapter 5)

YOU'RE ballsack?! Should be your ballsack. Why wasn't this spotted and then corrected? Ridiculous.

"Who's body did you bury?" (Page 128 — Chapter 6)

Should be this: "Whose body did you bury?"

Cheryl glared at Leo, intended to chide him, but when she thought about that kind of money, she couldn't judge with an entirely clean conscious. Polly had already been dead, after all.
What the hell am I saying? (Page 134 — Chapter 7)

Three things here: Conscious should be conscience. Intended should be intending. Also, she wasn't saying anything! It was only a thought.

"Were you close to your uncle, Alfie?" Cheryl asked (Page 150 — Chapter 8)

That's missing a period. I could point out more of this stuff, but there's lots of comma drama as well.

On the subject of comma drama, here's a prime example: "I didn't mean to hurt, Polly," he said as he sat on top of her. (Page 170 — Chapter 9)

What he meant to say there is this: "I didn't mean to hurt Polly."

Incorrect comma usage causes issues like this. Frequently!

Just another example of some comma drama: "You think you can run from me bitch?" (Page 188 — Chapter 10)

One last thing: "What until I get up there. I'm going to—"

Sigh. This really sucked to see. And it was in the final stages of the climactic battle! Should be this: "Wait until I get up there."

#DUH

Listen/read, I could go on and on, but I won't. There are many more errors I could call out, sure, but I'll refrain from doing so. The only reason I've made this a big part of the review is that I was so into it at times...that whenever anything appeared way off, it took me out of everything.

This author receives heaps of reviews and has been doing this for a bit, so why even have these silly problems for people to spot? Does he self-edit? Does he have an editor who isn't up to snuff? If that last thing is so, go ahead and hire me now. I promise you I'd do a much more thorough job!

These needless botches—along with several other examples I will choose not to surface digitally—are all why I've elected to give this novel a three-star rating. It would've been five without the dumb immersion breakers. I merely complain because I care.

Otherwise? What an awesome story. Seriously!

P.S. You're welcome, Iain. Fix the ones I've felt inclined to mention. If you don't, though? Well, to take a phrase that was woefully repeated in this very book, I'll "mash you up!"

P.S.S. Just joking; I won't mash ya up. I'm here all week. Until I'm not.

Escape! is a suspenseful horror thriller in the vein of the Saw movies. A group of coworkers are invited to an escape room to build some team spirit. (I’m surprised more horror authors haven’t used this idea of an escape room. Be prepared to see more after this). Once inside the room though things quickly turn out worse than expected. It’s a fast paced edge of your seat kind of story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fans of extreme horror may not find this as satisfying though. It’s definitely PG-13 horror. Maybe a light R. It’s not exactly bloody or gory. But there are plenty of death scenes. The tension quickly ramps up as we discover secrets about each coworker. Wright does a fine job of bringing these characters to life. You’ll be rooting for somebody one instant and the next disgusted by their actions. He has a real winner on his hands here.

The narrator of the audiobook, Aubrey Parsons, does an excellent job of carrying the heavy load of an ensemble cast. Every character has a distinct voice and I had no trouble keeping up with who was who.

Overall a great horror thriller with plenty of suspense and drama.

I actually liked it a lot. It started off with some quick intros and got right into things. The story progressed very nicely and never really stopped the action. The twists weren’t easy to figure out but the main character was mildly annoying as she had no ability to try and help herself. The characters had flaws and were somewhat believable. I felt myself thinking of the staff I work with and wondering what’s hiding?? Good read for sure

Review : I got interested in reading Escape! when I saw the reviews and ratings. I really thought that it's gonna be a truly horrific story but, end up it was just meh... It was nothing than just imagining the Hellevator - an American game show. The difference is only that this book is about finding who is the bad one, which is more like a revenge program. I found it very boring and the mood of reading it was not consistent. Sometimes I get the excitement and sometimes I felt (again) meh... Nevertheless, I finished the book and still couldn't find why people gave it a high rating and some of the reviews were so overwhelming. Well, I look at it as, we have different taste and different conclusion. For me, the book didn't bring much suspense and horrific effect.

This review is from my point of view. We may have different opinions. Feel free to share if there is any.
