A Farewell to Light

This book has imaginative elements, but the story structure and character development made it difficult for me to stay invested.
One major issue is how quickly large moral and political shifts occur. For example, a king who has overseen decades of war and slavery changes his entire stance after a single conversation with the protagonist, with no visible internal conflict or consequences. That resolution felt implausible and unintentionally suggested that entrenched systems exist simply because no one has challenged them before.
The late time skip also weakens the character arc. Roughly ten years of the protagonist’s most significant growth happen off-page, and the resulting personality changes are substantial. Because readers don’t witness that evolution, the character feels discontinuous rather than developed. Many of the most interesting developments seem to occur during that gap rather than in the narrated story.
Overall, the pacing and skipped development make the plot feel rushed despite the short length. Expanding key transitions, especially ideological changes and character growth, would likely strengthen both the realism and emotional impact.
