Wild, K.D. Firefight, 336 p. Chicken House (Scholastic), March 2009. Violence: PG-13.

Freedom Smith survived his time in the illegal fighting world and is now in secret agent training at Phoenix HQ. Gypsy Freedom has a hard time submitting to authority, however, and manages to put Java, his (hopefully) girlfriend into mortal danger when he doesn't obey his mentor's orders. Freedom jumps at the chance to do some reconnoitering, but instead finds himself right in the thick of things - dangerous humans, mind altering drugs and so-called magical powers. If Freedom is involved, then large amounts of destruction are sure to happen!

Wild's character has taken a turn into the world of mystic powers. For students who like their fighting wild and dangerous, this will be a prime piece of reading. Muchamore fans will love it.

Kate Wild created a suspenseful epic of a young gypsie boy named Freedom Smith. He comes from a family of incredible genes, one which is used the most is the Hercules Gene, which a great ancestor of his, suprisingly named Hercules, created. The gene is the give the person incredible strength something any body builder or anyone in the world would love to have for himself. The protagonist of this story is a young boy named Freedom smith,16. He is almost like me, sometime disobidient, always wants things his way, but the thing that connects him to me the most is his will to keep fighting and moving forward. He works for a organization called Phoenix, where they have to find and conquor all myths and mysteries that is so called "impossible". Your only allowed to work there because of your special genes that yiou have, such as Freedom's hercules gene. Another gene that that is conveyed throughout the story is telepathy.

In FireFight, the adventure Freedom takes on is a life for a life. Freedom risks his life to save a fellow friend, which he put in grave danger. The start of the book is sullen, Freedom is secretly on a Phoenix computer, forwarding and illegal message. That message is called a screamer, a picture of a monster like creature. Who every sees it and has this special power and taken a night by the same creature. Freedom actually sends this to a friend and creates his adventure. The only thing he can do now is fight until there's nothing to fight for anymore.

Freedom Smith is back and right off the bat, he's sick of working for the agency. He hates the restrictions of working for someone. But, in order to keep his family financially intact, he reluctantly does his work. His next mission is to track down the kids who have been kidnapped across the country. When he tracks down the source, he finds more than the kids, he finds an alechemy machine!(turn rocks into gold, live forever, etc.) But to defeat the masterminds behind this plot, Freedom has to master Dragon Fire, the ultimate fighting move. He meets Apollo and Angel in his quest, who serve a serpent godess. Can he do it? The answer: He thinks with his fists, I don't know. Eventually, he manages to destroy the alchemy device and escape the base. Right before he tries to resign from the agency, they show him his next mission. Track down his mutant long-lost brother. To be continued......

I gave this story four stars because it is packed with action and it is written in an understandable way. The only problem is the book is so short.

I would reccomend this book who likes anything out of the ordinary and about different ways people live.

The second in the series, Firefight goes on a more paranormal take. The novelty of the Hercules gene is gone since now we're more or less acquainted with Freedom Smith's fighting powers. The book starts off intriguing, what with the circulation of a Screamer email that leads to children getting kidnapped without a trace, but the problem is once you've been promised something this... supernatural, learning that it's all down to Science at the end of the day (did you really expect the series to get all paranormal-ish? We're talking about a fighter here) kinda takes the suspense out of it. It feels like you've been promised a bag of gold, and then Kate Wild delivers a bag of silver instead. Not terribly bad, but it's a bit of a let down. Nevertheless a good read, I think I'm hooked to the series since I like finishing what I start.

This one was recommended to me by my 11yo, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very easy read, kept me engaged - and now I have another book to talk with him about! Looking forward to reading the others by K. Wild.

Freedom Smith was more lively in Fight Game than in this continuation of his story.

I would recommend this book to young teens as I don't feel it was aimed at my age group (15+) therefore I am not the best judge of this book.
