The story was fun to follow and the main character Timo was just adorable. At the beginning, we see how he would love to experience great things, but, for the time being, he can do it only through reading books and telling stories. Once he has read every single book in his village, Timo feels he is ready to discover the world. His parents want to keep him close to protect their little boy without realizing how stifled he feels. Timo leaves the village with his little backpack full of objects he deems essential for his survival on a great adventure. One of them is a diary (every great explorer must write one, right?). Timo meets and even names new strange animals. I couldn’t help laughing reading his descriptions of them. He also makes a new friend who is a bit on a grumpy side, but is very loyal.
The artwork is very child-friendly, coupled with a gripping story and just the right amount of irony. I literally could not stop reading until I finished the story in one go.
Above all, I loved the message: ‘Go, discover, and learn. But you must accept the impact your actions will have on this world, adventurer…’ I will definitely recommend this book. Looking forward to reading the continuation of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

"Once upon a time there was a little boy who couldn't resist the call of adventure and left his home to discover what was on the other side of the large mysterious forest surrounding his village"

This graphic novel deals with a readers biggest nightmare of all time, our achilles heel, the one crisis that would end all our happiness, THE WORLD WOULD LITERALLY END. That is having read EVERY attainable book..
Audience: *gasp*
I know..
and that is exactly what happens to Timo, a child with a large imagination. I guess living in a small village has its downfall.

As crippeling as this would be in a normal bookworms life, Timo sees it as an opportunity to go on an adventure! So he runs away from home to do just that! Maybe then he will become the hero he has always read about in his stories. You can immediately tell that Timo takes precaution within the dark woods with all the knowledge he's learned from reading adventure stories. He's smart, immersive, and is eager to learn about true bravery, sacrifice and teamwork.

"It's not very heroic to wait for danger to come to you. Least I'm not afraid to go out and find it!"

THIS IS FREAKING ADORABLE. As I was reading, I looked up at the mirror across my room and noticed I had a huge smile plastered on my face. We meet so many wonderful characters in such a short amount of time and each character has their own segmented page of illustrations and facts. These act as the journal Timo is writing in each night.

The art is perfect, clear and the colors are warm. The line art is round and simple and very very cute, but the whole package still conveys everything, even the sad parts, extremely well. The panels are clear and pretty - very easy to follow too, which makes this an awesome comic that highlights self-discovery. Timo The Adventurer is meaningful, but it's much more than that. I really have to have this in my library!

Also this ends on an AWFUL CLIFFHANGER that I'm dying over..

My childhood calling back at me... A little kid reading every single book in his village, telling stories to the other kids sounds too familiar. Timo- like my old tiny self- worships books and adventures and is getting bored with comfort, he thinks he is ready to see the world discover it and face his own quests. He feels his parents are overprotective and so one night he leaves the village and sets on his way, ready for challenges. Not only is he armed with a sword but also with a diary where he jots down everything he comes across. I have the impression this is going to be a slap in the face of all the preconceptions of "manly adventurers" and "conquerors." I Secretly wish for it and I'd like to see more of the red-haired one-eyed pirate warrior whose duty is to protect the village. Timo is cute and relatable and all kinds of sweet.

That one was very good! This little boy going on an adventure, when he clearly has no idea what he is doing. The adventure is real, but there is also some good humor, kind of absurd. Good, funny, entertaining and I had fun reading it so... 4 stars! (Why not 5? This is still very light, too light for deserving 5 stars, but its a good an easy comic book!!)

I received this comic from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

A little boy who loves to read is preparing bit by bit to become that what he wishes to be the most… an adventurer!

I will write this review as I read, just like how I do the Harlequin Manga.

Timo loves stories it seems, loves them much more than frolicking around, and he looks forward to the day his parents bring a new book to him (apparently that isn’t easy, this village doesn’t have a library). I love that Timo devours books, finds new worlds and new skills, and that he was even eager to go adventuring on his own to get books. Man, that is me. If I was Timo I would also have gone for adventures. To find new books, new stories, to learn new things. dreams

But I can imagine his parents are hesitant. He is still a tiny one, and I can imagine they want to protect him.

Yay, Timo is on his way to adventures! He left a book for his best friend who listens to his stories, and I hope that he also left a note for his parents. I know he said he didn’t say goodbye, but who knows, maybe he left something written. I hope so.

I had a laugh at his adventures to get through the woods. He acts all smarty-pants, and indeed a bit show-offish, but you can see that he doesn’t know all the things. He is learning as he goes, and that makes me happy. I was already thinking he would just manage his way out in a flash, but no.

I liked the red-haired woman who is protecting the valley. I did agree with what she said to Timo, he is quite arrogant which is something he should ditch very fast or it indeed will bite him in his ass.

Ohhhh, I do like that we see journal parts. OK, sure, it is mostly a recap of what we just saw which is a shame, but still fun to see Timo’s thoughts and drawings. As the journey continues we see more of his journal and I had a laugh at his imagination. Come on, that bear was so clearly not a sage, but oh well. He is now I guess. :P

I am getting a bit tired of Timo’s whining and fancy talking. Yes, questing is hard. Yes, adventuring isn’t always fun and happiness. I am sure your books would have told you that as well. :\ But at least he is continuing his journey and not giving up.

I just adore seeing this world, the animals (they are so many adorable and fluffy ones, but also bigger tougher ones), the landscape, I wish I could explore this world.

Um Timo, you had to go through some wall/glass thingie, you see something in the midst of a ruined room chained up as much as it can be, and you free it? Dang, that is just not something you may want to do. Then again, this is Timo. He doesn’t seem to get various things. I wonder what Broof is and why he was chained up. Why did the animals go all weird when he was freed. What kind of consequences will come because of this?

I am still not sure how I feel about Broof, he seems to at least have his heart in the right places.. at times. I loved how he went to save Timo’s life when he found out about the bite.

That ending though, holy crap. I need the second volume of this series. I need to know what is going to happen to Timo. I need to know why letting out Broof was bad. I want to see more adventures!

The art was just amazing, I love the style oh so much. I definitely do need to check if the artist has done any other works. And then hope they are in English, German, or Dutch, or very easy Spanish/French. :P

I would recommend this fun book to everyone. Adventure, magic, fun, mysterious monsters, and a boy with a thirst to find out about this world and bring back stories to his family and friends.

Timo has read every single book in the village, so obviously he knows all there is to know about adventures - and it's time for him to go on one of his own! Because, of course, all that wisdom is in his brain, he will have a wonderfully easy time and swiftly defeat any obstacle he encounters. Except that's not quite what happens... it's a very cute story with lots of odd and wonderful characters, and I'm excited to find out what happens next!

Timo is a young boy who loves to read adventure stories. When his parents won't let him grow up, Timo runs away to embark on his own adventure. Will he be strong enough to face the dangers ahead? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a pretty good action adventure fantasy graphic novel. The art was amazing and the story was great too. I look forward to checking out the next volume in the future. Definitely check out Volume 1 of this book when it releases to bookstores and wherever books are sold online on February 20, 2019.

‘Timo the Adventurer’ follows Timo, a boy from a small village hidden in the forest. He thinks he’s ready for an adventure and boy, does he get one!!

This felt like a distant relative to Adventure Time, so if you’re a fan of the show, you’d like this!! Timo is so spunky and surprisingly brave! He’s smart and resourceful but also cocky and full of doubts. I liked his journal pages interspersed with the graphics.

Super cute and fun and perfect for Adventure Time fans!!

I loved almost everything about Timo the Adventurer by Jonathan Garnier and illustrated by Yohan Sacré. And I'm quite torn on whether or not I would have loved everything were I quite a lot younger than I currently am. The truth is, though, that I would probably recommend this book to a great number of children that I know, especially if they are book-loving dreamers of adventure. Despite my not liking one thing, I know there is a lot to love about this graphic novel.

Timo is a young boy who lives in a small village. On the day he learns he has finally read every last book available in the tiny world within which he grew up, Timo now knows it is time for him to have an adventure of his own. No longer will he be gushing to the other village children about adventures that great heroes have. Now it is his turn to have an adventure and become a great hero himself.

Love, love, love the journal.

This premise alone, coupled with the fact that Timo later chronicles his adventures in a notebook made this book a fantastic read for me. His journey is an easy one to engage in and his naive innocence makes him all the more endearing. I loved every second of Timo's adventure, especially in the beginning.

The artwork in this graphic novel is absolutely adorable, but it gets even better when you pair it alongside the cute creatures and the amusing names Timo gives them. A part of me actually really wants a mushpuff and a scampermunk now.

Plot twists are okay.

I feel like the twist and conclusion were really just all over the place. The truth about Broof and the magician weren't delivered in a way that really shocked me. Nor did it make me feel as though the way things ended was satisfying at all. The fact of the matter is that the ultimate fight never really happens where it should have. And then there's a bunch of info-dumping and suddenly, though everything is resolved, you never really feel closure.

It is, however, very clear what story the author was telling. And despite my wanting to reorganize the ending a little bit, I can't help feeling that I might not have cared had I read this when I was eight or so. Especially since I didn't think the twist and ending were bad, but rather that it was poorly organized.

'Timo the Adventurer Book 1' with story by Jonathan Garnier and art by Yohan Sacre is a graphic novel about a young boy explorer.

What's a boy to do after he has read all the books in the village? For Timo, that means it's time to put all that knowledge to work and explore. So he steps outside his village to meet the strange weird world outside.

This is a fun read for younger readers. The art is pretty fantastic and the story is good.

Oh Timo, you are a young boy after my own heart.

Timo lives in a small village, by a forest. A devourer of books, there comes the say when he discovers that he has read every single book that his village has to offer. With his head full of knowledge from the books that he has read, Timo decides that he should go out into the real world. He has read about adventures for years, now he needs to experience one first hand:
"Whatever awaits me on the other side of this forest will make a hero of me. And I'll come back with tons of stories. Enough to entertain them winter after winter!" (p.7)

This was a cute, charming tale about finding your place in the world, and discovering that real life isn't like the action between the pages of a book. Timo, bless him, is very naive, not really understanding that his own actions can have consequences, and that not everything is as it first appears. The colouring for the story is very well done: the art is charming, and the colour palettes used are very soft. There is humour within the tale, as Timo gets the wrong end of the stick in so many different ways. There is also a threat of danger, enough to keep younger readers intrigued but hopefully not too much to scare them away. The ending also presents us with a good message, and Timo definitely does learn a few things along the way, on his journey, so there is character development for him.

All in all, this is a cute tale, with lovely artwork. If I could, I would definitely like to find out where Timo's adventures take him next.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A refreshingly different graphic novel, Timo the Adventurer follows the story of a young boy who wants to explore the world.

After having read all the books available in his small village, the young boy decides it's time to leave his home behind and search for new adventures. What he's not prepared for, though, is that the world is very big and much more dangerous than books have prepared him for. Through a series of hilarious, sweet, and dangerous situations, Timo will explore, meet new creatures, and find himself in the process.

Timo the Adventurer stands out both for the amazing storytelling, and the magical illustrations that accompany it. This is definitely a recommended read.

Timo is such an eager bookworm that when he's read every book in his village he feels this urge to leave his town in the search for more books. But he wouldn't ever imagine he'll have to face such strange creatures and come upon several odd characters, slowly unfolding an ancient battle between humans and monsters...

Through his journey, Timo will learn a lot of valuable lessons as well as the author and I consider this is suitable for fans oh Hilda, by Luke Pearson, regardless the age of the reader; the artwork is lovely and also the creatures, both cute and dangerous, making the whole of this graphic novel a nice and whimsical adventure.

Odd book about what a hero truly is; learning to trust; learning to forgive and learning from mistakes. Some areas slow, but others fast paced. While translated from the French has a slight Scandinavian feeling as well. Old school/old world with a modern presentation.

*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free graphic novel.*

"Once upon a time there was a little boy who couldn't resist the call of adventure and left his home to discover what was on the other side of the large, mysterious forest surrounding his village."

Timo has read to many (fantasy) books and when he has read all the books that there are in his little village, he leaves to find adventures of his own. He encounters wise bears, dangerous giant spider-mushroom-thingies and rides a fluffy llama/alpaca.

The graphic novel is well drawn and highly entertaining for both children and adults. Especially for the latter, the comic is meta: it makes fun and yet uses the tropes of adventure books. Little Timo interprets things the way they are in the books and sometimes ignores reality.

Super short and cute graphic novel. I'd like to read part 2 and see how the story ends. 5 Stars

Graphic Novel
I received an electronic ARC from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group through NetGalley.
Timo longs for adventure beyond his small village. He has read every book available and remembers his parents' promise that he can explore after this is done. As he's still a child, they say no. As you'd expect, he sneaks away and heads out for adventure. Garnier set the scene well and continues to add to the depth of the characters and settings as readers move through the book. The adventures start small and build as Timo learns more about himself and his environment. He grows more confident and learns what true heroes are from observation. All comes out well in the end with hints of more adventures to come.
A magical adventure for middle grade readers.

I received an eARC of this graphic novel courtesy of Europe Comics via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!!

Many readers may think that being this graphic novel directed to children, may not be suitable or thrilling enough for an adult audience. On the contrary, Timo the adventurer entertained me a lot more than other graphic novels for adults. The story of Timo is not trivial at all, indeed in my opinion it is very sought after. In some respects, it reminds me of the stories of the Nordic folklore. We do not know exactly when the story of Timo is set but, in my opinion, reading the story and looking at the illustrations I might think that Timo is a little Viking after all.
In this story we get to know Timo, a boy who lives in a small village. The village is located in a valley where at its end there is a forest. Beyond the forest there is the world. Timo is a curious boy who loves adventure’s stories. Every time his parents go to visit other villagers, they always bring him a new book to read. Unfortunately, not this time. Timo has read all the books in the village, so he would not be able to dream and experience new adventures.
However, Timo is a brave kid and since there are no more books, he decides to live new adventures on his own. So, when he will return back home, he will have many new stories to tell the other kids of the village.
It's been a while since Timo had prepared the backpack with everything necessary, including a notebook where to write down his adventures. Every night before sleep he writes what happened to him on that day and draws all the new beings encountered, some of whom have never been seen before.
In fact, there are not only fantastic animals in this story, but real adventures. Spite to his young age, Timo faces monsters wandering the world in search of adventures, when his is already living his own adventure. At some point, by chance, he will know an animal who will become his partner of adventures, Broof. Timo and Broof will face dangerous monsters together on a new journey to discover the world.
Although Timo the adventurer is aimed at a young audience, I had so much fun reading it. The illustrations are beautiful, all in pastel tones. I laughed a lot, while reading this graphic novel!
Sometimes I like reading books for kids, to dream and relax, wandering with imagination.
Timo is a very brave child. He has studied a lot and read a lot of books and feels perfectly prepared to face any adventure. Of course, as it should be, he has resentments too and has often thought of going home. But on the one hand the pride, on the other the desire for adventure pushed him to make this journey. Timo the adventurer is that kind of graphic novel that when you start it takes you into his world and you do not want to stop reading it until it's finished.

This is the first of two books, and it was published today, 20th of February 2019 by Europe Comics and Le Lombard.

Timo is viewed as a bit of an odd kid in his village for always having his nose in a book. He can’t get enough of literary adventures. But when his parents inform him that he’s read the very last book in the village, Timo decides it is time for him to have an adventure of his own. But adventuring in real life is not quite like in the books. Some of it is much more boring than he thought and then unexpectedly it gets a bit more interesting than he’d prefer.

This ends on quite the cliffhanger, so those who can’t stand dangling like that may want to wait till book 2 is out to read this one. Timo’s adventures are what you’d expect for a kid who thinks he’s got it all figured out from the books he’s read but then realizes that book knowledge may not be the same as real world experience. The book does a mixture of poking fun at fantasy adventures while also enjoying all that is fun about them. Timo is a plucky and likable kid to follow around. And I think many kids who are voracious readers, feel like they don’t always fit in and long for something exciting to happen in their lives will identify with him. He manages to experience a full range of emotions during his adventures in this book. He’s optimistic, bored, second guessing himself, lonely, feeling like he has a grand purpose, and then in deadly peril. It’s a light epic fantasy story in a nutshell. I really like the art style. It’s cartoonish and features soft tones while also being imaginative. It is like a mashup of Hildafolk and The Whisker Sisters, which are both European too, so maybe we’ll dub this…European anime style? It’s delightful to the eyes and the middle grade readers seem to like it too. I hope this comes out in a print form I can get for our library because I think the students at my school would absolutely love Timo. Highly recommended for fantasy lovers, voracious readers, and graphic novel fans.

Notes on content [Based on the ARC]: No language issues. No sexual content or decency issues. Some perilous situations but so far the worst has been a bruised butt from getting thrown by an animal and a little bite that has gotten worst. (The cliffhanger ends in a perilous situation but you aren’t sure what’s coming.)

I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Four stars.

Timo the Adventurer Book 1 is about a young boy named Timo who leaves his small village to become a hero after reading all the books he could find. His journey begins when he rescues an enchanted, grumpy beast named Broof, who becomes his unlikely companion. Unbeknownst to Timo, Broof's mysterious past will soon bring complications to his quest. The graphic novel follows Timo's coming-of-age story as he learns about the world and learns important lessons along the way.

Since I'm so behind on writing my reviews, I'm going to do somewhat less than I would normally do when writing a review. Just until I catch up (just 20 or so more to go...) So what I am going to do now is just talk about what I think the best thing about the book is and what the worst thing about the book is. I'll start with the best thing: I was caught up in the story of this from the first page. It’s quite the adventure! There were action scenes and tense moments and excitement. There were moments when I thought our heroes were done for, and they managed to prevail at the last moment. So good!! I also loved the illustration style, it was cute and I felt really added to the atmosphere of the story.

What I liked least about this was…hmmm. Well there wasn’t much not to like. If I had to dredge one thing up, I do think that there were moments that were quite dark for a kids book. I don’t really have much else bad to say about this - I really enjoyed it!

Timo the Adventurer surely is exciting! I love adventure comics for kids when they're done with seriousness and with heart too. Garnier doesn't take the readers for granted and boy do our hero and the raccoon like creature have character! The story starts in a small village, where a boy named Timo has read all the books and now he yearns for more adventures. His parents don't want him to go on an adventure, but the boy is proud and leaves without goodbyes. He wonders through different lands only to find a weird creature captured in ruins and helps the said creature. Broof is mean and has a mission and Timo tags along. The comic is very mysterious and I cannot wait for the continuation, since I don't have a clue what is going to happen! The structure is amazing and the mystery is kept hidden well, which I surely enjoyed a lot. The rhythm is wonderful and the story rolls perfectly.

The art is beautiful and the soft colors compliment the story. There's this looming darkness even though the creatures look cute and whatnot. Timo the Adventurer looks magical and the thin and round line art flows nicely. Timo and Broof's relationship is quirky and awesome and the humor is great too. I loved Timo's notes and how he names the creatures he encounters along his ride. Such a great adventure comic, but I would've wanted more pages!

This was good. It is a nice, self-contained story where I won't need to buckle up for a ten year ride through multiple sequels to get anywhere.

The twist into the third act was interesting and really opened up the story as far more complex than it appeared. Again, that is a good thing.

What keeps this away from a 4/5 star review is that Timo learned the wrong lessons. Instead of some moral relativism, Timo needed to learn the power of FORGIVENESS. The world needs forgiveness. I don't need to understand a person to forgive their mistakes, and I don't need to justify my actions when I've wronged someone, I need to seek their forgiveness.

I just think you had a better moral in their, and instead ended with a moral that fell flat.

Still, a good story.
