Janice Kay Johnson is the author of over a hundred books for children and adults. Her first four published romance novels were coauthored with her mother, also a writer who has since published mysteries and children's books on her own. These were "sweet" romance novels, the author hastens to add; she isn't sure they'd have felt comfortable coauthoring passionate love scenes!

Janice graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. in history and then received a master's degree in library science from the University of Washington. She was a branch librarian for a public library system until she began selling her own writing.

She has written six novels for young adults and one picture book for the read-aloud crowd. Rosamund was the outgrowth of all those hours spent reading to her own daughters, and of her passion for growing old roses. Two more of her favorite books were historical novels she wrote for Tor/Forge. The research was pure indulgence for someone who set out intending to be a historian!

Janice is divorced and has raised her two daughters in a small, rural town north of Seattle, Washington. She's an active volunteer and board member for Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter, and foster kittens often enliven a household that already includes a few more cats than she wants to admit to!

Janice loves writing books about both love and family — about the way generations connect and the power our earliest experiences have on us throughout life. Her Superromance novels are frequent finalists for Romance Writers of America RITA® awards. Along with her books for Harlequin, Janice has written the Cape Trouble series of romantic suspense novels, and is about to launch a new series, Desperation Creek, set in rural eastern Oregon.

The second Intrigue book I've read by Janice Kay Johnson, and the second I've given 1 star to. The author has written books for the Super Romance line for many years, and has moved to Intrigue since that line closed. Considering that she seems to prefer delivering books with zero plot and a "focus" on romance, perhaps she could consider a move to the Romantic Suspense line.

Detective Abby Baker has amnesia after being shot. Her police partner has been killed, and her own boss seems to think she was behind it. Abby thinks she's still got someone after her, so she goes to stay with her Amish aunt and uncle to hide out. Her boss sends in his old buddy, the Sheriff, Caleb Tanner, to keep an eye on her and see what he can dig up. Of course, he's taken in by Abby's beauty and Amish innocence.

I'm not a fan of the hide-out-at-the-cabin trope, and I'm not fond of most Amish-based stories, either. (Linda Castillo's books an exception.) Aside from a couple of half-baked attempts on Abby's life, this is just so dreary and dull. The relationship between Abby and Caleb didn't have any spark. Whatever it is that killed Abby's partner and nearly her is a complete unknown, and then described offhand in a sentence or two at the end. So for the most part, we don't even know what Abby is actually running from. Huh? The climactic showdown is confusingly described and completely lacking any suspense. As is the rest of the story. These are all the exact criticisms I had of Johnson's previous book Hide The Child. Something tells me she's not about to change her formula.

Trust me when I say to avoid this snorefest.

3 ½ Stars ~ I've read several SuperRomances by Ms Johnson, this is my first Intrigue written by her. I found it equally compelling as her Supers.

The book cover synopsis is pretty spot on. Abby's amnesia is solely of the events surrounding the shooting and her partner's death. She's certain she's being framed and feels betrayed by her colleagues who seems to believe she's guilty of killing her partner. Caleb has always had good instincts about people, and he finds it difficult to believe that Abby was capable of killing her partner. When attempts are made on her life, he vows to protect her. Together they retrace Abby and her partners last few days in the hopes to shake up the killer and purposely put a target on Abby's back to draw him out.

The attraction between Abby and Caleb is there brewing. Ms Johnson cleverly uses the more peaceful steady pace of Amish life to intensify the danger Abby brings with her from the city. In "Intrigue" style, the romance holds second place to suspense or mystery of the story. I found this a compelling story with a very satisfying HEA. Perhaps, Ms. Johnson may hint at their future in another story.

I have come to enjoy Janice's books. They are well written and a joy to read. In this one I get to meet Detective Abby Baker first. The story starts with action with what happens to Abby. Its a steady pace of action for she goes into hiding which brings in Sheriff Caleb Tanner. There is a big mystery as to what happened to her and her partner this will keep you guessing til the end. There are some neat twists in this to keep you going. The biggest one is at the end. I love the way she wrote this story. There is a good blend of mystery, suspense and romance. I like the way it takes time for things to happen. I look forward to the next book.

An engaging mystery romance set in an Amish community.

Police detective Abby Baker can’t remember who killed her partner Neal. Her colleagues at the precinct think it could be her. When Abby seeks shelter with her mother’s Amish relatives she meets handsome sheriff Caleb Tanner. There’s one problem. Caleb thinks Abby might be the killer.

I really enjoyed Trusting the Sheriff. The story moves forward at a decent pace. Abby is likeable and Caleb is an attractive hero.

Disappointing. I knew the bad guy way before the end and was making suggestions to the author (in my head) way early in the plot too. Therefore I was not captured by the story as I would have expected.

A powerful read that grabs you from the start and keeps you in a race that will pit law enforcement against a Ex Detective and a County Sheriff to find the truth about a shotting that took her partners life and coused her to not remember what happened. It's fast paced all the way until the end.
