He is possibly best-known for his long runs illustrating, and later writing the Legion of Super-Heroes title in the 1980s and 1990s. He also created the alien mercenary character Lobo (with Roger Slifer), and the irreverent "want-to-be" hero, Ambush Bug. Giffen is known for having an unorthodox writing style, often using characters in ways not seen before. His dialogue is usually characterized by a biting wit that is seen as much less zany than dialogue provided by longtime collaborators DeMatteis and Robert Loren Fleming. That approach has brought him both criticism and admiration, as perhaps best illustrated by the mixed (although commercially successful) response to his work in DC Comics' Justice League International (1987-1992). He also plotted and was breakdown artist for an Aquaman limited series and one-shot special in 1989 with writer Robert Loren Fleming and artist Curt Swan for DC Comics.
Giffen's first published work was "The Sword and The Star", a black-and-white series featured in Marvel Preview, with writer Bill Mantlo. Everyone always told me I needed to read this event, and finally I did!
This is broken into four sections. First is Drax's new origins story basically, Nova's fight for survival, Silver Surfer regaining his power, and Super Skrull on a mission. They all vary in quality but they all connect to Annihilus, a bug looking motherfucker with so much power, and such a big army, that even the strongest cosmic powers are going to have problems with this guy.
But let's break each section down.
Drax - Excellent origin story (I mean it's not origin but it feels it, and Drax is reborn, so it works). This features a Drax on earth having to face a couple of his alien friends while also meeting a girl named Cammi. Together these two bond to make one of the most interesting father/daughter dynamics I've seen.
Nova - Drax story goes right into Nova after he witnesses ALL of his people in the Nova Corp WIPED out by Annihilus army. This leaves Nova with the FULL nova force and he's able to do amazing things, as long as he doesn't go insane in the process.
Silver Surfer - One of the strongest beings ever goes back to Galactus seeking help while we see Thanos's big purple ass plotting. We also see more of Annihilus so this part worked too.
Super Skrull - Weakest of the 4 stories. Didn't much care about the character or his crew, and the art didn't work for how violent it became.
Overall, 3/4ths of this was good-fantastic. Well worth it. A 4 out of 5.

So for such a big event, I was largely disappointed by this trade. The art was sub par through most of it, and though I do get the huge scope of the story, the writing can’t seem to carry it along. It gets lost in itself and wanders around, like they don’t know exactly how to increase the size of the story but still keep it interesting.
I waited a long time to get this trade, and I’m sad that’s all this is, just some collection of lost in the woods tales.

I don't normally bother with reviews, but this is the single most disappointing Marvel story I have ever read. You don't plan a universe-wide saga with potentially far-reaching developments and have it drawn as a cartoon. I have no issue with cartoony art, and no problem with the artists, but their style is completely and utterly wrong if you want your audience to engage with drama and get involved with the characters. The Drax part was a complete waste of time, the super skull pretty much the same, the art so mismatched with the story I barely glanced at it. The only decent part of this publication was the Silver Surfer. That's the only reason it got a star. I just hope that the second part of this saga is better. It couldn't be worse. Could it?

The Drax miniseries was quite enjoyable (4*), although a bit confusing at the start. Prologue (5*) and Nova miniseries (5*) were just amazing. Silver Surfer miniseries is quite nice (3*) but like the Drax miniseries confusing at times. Didnt really care for the Super Skrull story (2*), especially the artwork just doesnt work for me at all, took me out of it. The character information pages after some issues are great though, so the confusement does get remedied a bit when it comes to character knowledge. Overall 3.5* i'd say.

Annihilation is an event set in the Marvel space cosmos from 10 years ago that I've been meaning to read. After going through Jonathan Hickman's Infinity this summer, I put both Annihilation volumes on my wish list and received them for Christmas. This first volume is a mixed bag. The good is very good and the bad feels out of place and largely unnecessary. A compilation of shorter series that all focus on a specific character with different creators behind the wheel, Annihilation as a whole can feel disjointed, though it does tell an easy-to-follow story. The first section centers on the reincarnation of Drax the Destroyer. This was written ahead of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, so when Drax was a relative nobody. Opening the odyssey with this story felt odd to me. Most of it takes place in Alaska, not space, and introduces a few stereotypical teenage characters who don't really bring much to the story. When we moved into the next section, which focuses on the Nova corps and the Annihilation Wave proper, things picked up. I could feel the stakes raised within this one, and the Nova corps member tasked with this mission, Richard Rider, is far more interesting than Drax and Cammi. It was also appropriate to get a better look at Annihilus and what the lead antagonist of this series is capable of. The Nova story led directly into the Silver Surfer section which was also very good, if not simple. Some of the dialogue from Keith Giffen in this part left a little something to be desired, but it still is the second best part of the collection. It doesn't hurt that Thanos and Galactus are featured prominently here as well. Finally, there's a 4-issue story dedicated to K'Lrt, the Super-Skrull, which takes place after the Annihilation Wave and really doesn't sync much with what has come before it. The art in this section was jarring compared to how the rest of the series looked, and the story overall was boring and really not engaging in anyway. Onto the next volume and the core story proper.

I'd give a higher rating for some of the storylines. The lower rating is that I didn't care for some of the artwork.
I enjoyed the interactions between Cammi and Drax. Cammi's life was pretty grim before some escaped intergalactic prisoners decide to enslave the people of her Alaskan town. Then life becomes grim for all the humans. Cammi claims what is apparently Drax's dead body, but he's reborn as an intelligent warrior. Cammi goes with Drax when he leaves Earth.
I liked the Nova story quite a lot, but the artwork made Richard Rider very craggy and ugly. I was not a fan of craggy-faced Nova. Cammi notes that he has "sweet glutes," so at least one feature carried over from the 1990s versions of Richard Rider. But basically he's extremely ugly, and Quasar, the Wendell Vaughn version, is craggy-faced and ugly here, too. I found Xandar's Worldmind very annoying, but so did Nova, so I could sympathize with him there. And there are amusing moments in Nova's interactions with Drax and Cammi, though Nova doesn't find a lot of it as amusing as a reader might.
I don't remember the Silver Surfer story too clearly, but I haven't reread it like I have the Prologue and the first two stories in this book. As other reviewers have commented, the cartoony artwork for the Super-Skrull story doesn't go with the grim subject matter at all.
Important background here for the main Annihilation Saga, so I recommend it. And the storylines do come together later. The Drax story merges into the Nova story pretty early on, actually.

If I recall correctly, Annihilation came out at the same time as Civil War, all those years ago. At that point I had virtually no knowledge of the cosmic side of Marvel comics, and being a student I also had no budget to change that. So Annihilation passed me by.
But I was aware that the story was both critically and commercially... huge, and had massive ramifications.
In the intervening 15 or so years I know a fair more about the cosmic characters. I've read Infinity Gauntlet and the GotG series that immediately follows Annihilation; and obviously I've seen the movies too. And then I saw The complete collection Vol 1 and 2 in a comic shop that was closing down. I snapped them up for a bargain price. Finally I can find out what the fuss was about.
I wasn't disappointed. The actual Annihilation mini series is in volume 2 so volume 1 is all lead in but that doesn't stop it from being incredibly compelling still.
It was interesting seeing the metamorphosis of Drax, from the old version I was pretty unfamiliar with to the (at least visually) the version we are used to now. And Nova is a character I have NEVER read before. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store for him Volume 2. He's got a lot on his mind and his shoulders.
Can't wait to get stuck in!

Annihilation is the first time I've dipped my toe into the cosmic side of Marvel. In my long history of reading comics, I cannot recall reading more than a random issue that included Drax, Nova (Richard Rider), Silver Surfer, or Super-Skrull.
I loved the first section about Drax and Cammi. Nova was very interesting also even though he seems to be a Green Lantern and associated Corps clone. I found Silver Surfer a bit busy with secondary characters, perhaps not a big deal for one already familiar with his storyline. I enjoyed the Super-Skrull issues, but I found the shift in art style to the more cartoony caricature side made it feel separate from the other three character arcs.
Overall, a great and intriguing read and presented well in Marvel's "complete collection" line. I look forward to the conclusion in volume two.

Annihilation was an interesting story. Coming out roughly the same time as Civil War, it involved Marvel's space-based heroes in a much bigger storyline. Presented as a series of inter-related mini-series to start, the first volume contained a Drax the Destroyer mini-series that acts as a prelude, the Annihilation prologue, and then three more mini-series featuring, respectively, Nova, the Silver Surfer, and the Super-Skrull. These works vary in quality, but the overall effect of the total is rather impressive. The story of course continues in Volume 2, picking up with Ronan the Accuser and then the actual Annihilation story as Annihilus spreads destruction throughout the universe simply because he can.

Another 3.5 stars situation but I felt compelled to round up this time. Things start off very strong here with devastation being visited upon the Nova Corps. The story feels huge and dramatic.
Problems start to develop in the second half of the collection. The Silver Surfer depicted here doesn't feel like the character that's been a stalwart of the Marvel universe for over 50 years. The final four issues featured here are devoted to the Super-Skrull. His story is an intriguing one but the art feels very reminiscent of Jim Mahfood and doesn't really fit the tone of the work.
The finish isn't as strong as the start here but it's still definitely worth reading.

Really enjoyed this one. I read a few reviews that said the Super Skrull volumes at the end felt out of place, but I enjoyed them. Side stories have a way of building out the world even more than just focusing on a few characters. Everyone in the galaxy isn't just sitting there waiting to be saved by Silver Surfer, Drax and Nova. I haven't gotten Volume 2 yet, but I'm eager to read it and see how they wrap up the story.

Read this in a relaxed pacing. This is a compilation of Drax, Nova, Silver Surfer and Super Skrull stories during the Annihilation wave of the Negative Zone headed by Annihilus. I liked how the individual plot relate to one another while giving the readers an introduction to the actual conflict. This is a graphic novel space opera in grand scale minus your usual list of popular superheroes. Loved all of them here especially Super Skrull. Looking forward to owning Vol. 2, Nice!

This was an easy to read get into the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. Although some words or characters were completely new to me, if you kept reading things did eventually make sense. I loved the Drax, Nova and KL'RT stories. The Silver Surfer one felt, I dont know, weird? Galactus seems to be a big bad evil (first time reading something where he in involved) and he joins his side. Did not like that at all. Overall I really enjoyed this volume and look forward to reading the second one :)

cool story arc love marvel’s cosmic universe
I was not putting my hopes but I really loved this story really cosmic and epic and great reboots for Drax, Silver Surfer and Super Skrull i never understood why such a cool character was a loser he has the powers of all the fantastic four how cool is that.

I really liked this comic but at the sane time this was my first ever Marvel comic « omnibus » so I don’t really have anything to compare it with. I bought this book book because I really like the guardians of the galaxy and I wanted to know their backstory but the comics showed me so many cooler characters like Nova and Silver Surfer.

This is the first piece of Marvel Cosmic universe I've read. Overall I really enjoyed this opening collection. I did find some of the stories slower than others though. Will give this 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Pretty good, even though it oddly contains no issues of the Annihilation comic itself. There is some world building going on though, so I'll see how that plays out in volume two.

I really enjoyed this whole collection, but my advice is to forego the Super Skull issues. Read the rest, but that arc is a real stinker.

As is expected of any project that spans many artists and writers, this is a bit of a mixed bag effort.
Drax the Destroyer: 3 stars, I guess? There were some amusing nods and grins here and there, but what dragged this down for me was Cammi. Was this little girl (10?) supposed to be an appealing character, or just a foil for whatever Drax’s thing is? I found her annoying as hell most of the time. And can we talk about a 10-almost-11-year-old girl being totally unfazed in one scene talking to a stark naked humanoid (with presumably humanoid bits & bobs flapping in the breeze)? I guess the only real reason for this story being included in the omnibus is to present the how and maybe why an Earth girl is hanging out with Drax far (very far) from home later on.
Prologue: 4 stars. Enter Thanos into the discussion. Enter (and exit) the Nova Corps. Ronan and the Silver Surfer make appearances. And enter the root of all this evil: Annihilus, fresh out of the Negative Zone. Overall a solid and action packed snippet, with the hope being that the rest of the series/omnibus follows through. My only small qualm: of the many tens of thousands of Nova warriors in the Nova Corps, only *ONE* survives, and it just happens to be the token Earthling? Hmm, okay. He must have been wearing his extra-special Plot Armor before the big attack. ;)
Nova: 3.5 stars. Two B-grade heroes (Nova and Quasar, that oddly had their own comic book series’ way back in the `70s) save a ton of civilians, and go toe-to-toe against Annihilus. I’ve never been all that wowed with Nova, and he first comes across a bit whiney here. He later saves the day, so hooray, I guess? This is a Dan Abnett effort, so even on his off days, he puts out solid rock’em sock’em stuff.
Silver Surfer: 4.5 stars. Always cool to see the ex-Galactus heralds hang out, even if it means that some don’t of them make it ( Silver Surfer gets juiced with all of the power that Galactus gives him, and raises holy heck. Thumbs up.
Super Skrull: 2 stars. The weakest of the bunch. It was kinda cool to see him use the Fantastic Four powers in devious and brutal methods, and I actually liked the romance angle. But the plot is a bit creaky, and the cartoon-ish art was a bit too all over the place for me.

Silver Surfer: 4.5 stars. Always cool to see the ex-Galactus heralds hang out, even if it means that some don’t of them make it ( Silver Surfer gets juiced with all of the power that Galactus gives him, and raises holy heck. Thumbs up.
Super Skrull: 2 stars. The weakest of the bunch. It was kinda cool to see him use the Fantastic Four powers in devious and brutal methods, and I actually liked the romance angle. But the plot is a bit creaky, and the cartoon-ish art was a bit too all over the place for me.

Dense and Brutal, it took me a while to settle into this event but by the end it has me quite interested. One thing i wasn't a fan of though was the art for the most part, with the exception of the Silver Surfer and Drax the destroyer issues i found the art to be somewhat simple and grotesque, and the action choreography a bit lackluster. I think the strength lies in the story, which there's a lot to sink your teeth into if you're patient with it.
By far my favorite issues were the Drax and Silver Surfer issues, i'm holding out hope that i'll warm up to Nova for part two of the event. Nothing against Richard Ryder, its just that as a new reader I didn't really get a look at Richard's heart, what makes him a hero in these beginning issues. I think that'll change though later on.

I wasn’t terribly impressed with the Drax portion of this book. The art style made it difficult to know what was going on at times, and then other times characters had weird lumpy faces. I also was not a huge fan of the writing or the story. It just didn’t pull me in and I didn’t find it interesting.
The Nova portion of this was much better. And Drax and Cammi instantly got better when they showed up as well. So that tells me that Abnett and Lanning’s writing was much better. I also much preferred the art and story for Nova as well. I’ve seen him pop up in GotG comics but didn’t know much about him or where he came from. So this was informative as well as entertaining and much better to look at!
