I really liked reading this story. At first, I didn't think I would like the story, by the cover. Yeah, I know, 'Don't judge a book by it's cover.' We all do. I liked this story right from the beginning. I enjoyed the story line, which was different than others. The characters were fantastic.
Niki inherited her grandmother's diner. She has always had great memories of her grandmother and the diner, so she is going to do everything she can to keep it running. For some reason, there isn't the money there should be because they are always busy. On top of all that, she has always had a heart condition. She is on medication to help, but she knows when the medicine stops helping her, she will die. She was in the hospital during her childhood more than not. Never had a boyfriend, no prom, no graduation party. It seems everything in the diner is breaking down. First the plumbing, now the refrigerator. She forgets to eat because of nausea, so now she is very skinny. She barely fits into her clothes any more. Then this hot looking guy walks into the diner. Wowza!
Exodus, yes, like in the bible, is a fallen angel. Once, almost a thousand years ago Delia, a female demon tempted him into bed. She was banished to Hell for 1000 years, and he was banished to Earth for 1000 years. If he can behave himself, no temptation, when he is being judged, he will be allowed back into Heaven. Then his angel friend Leviticus shows up and tells him that Delia was released early and is looking for him. If she can tempt him again, she will get huge points from Lucifer because Exodus' soul will go to hell, along with the rest of him. Meanwhile back on Earth, Exodus goes to the diner because he doesn't feel like cooking. He has been going to the diner for more years than people would realize. He new Niki's grandmother, and the food at the diner has always been great. The first time he sees Niki she is about to fall down the wooden stairs in the back of the diner up to her apartment. She is about to pass out when he catches her. He befriends her, helping her out, buying the new refrigerator that the diner needs but she can't afford. He recommends that she put security cameras up to find out if someone is skimming from the till. When he asks her if she has a boyfriend or husband, she says that if nobody ever asked her to prom, how was she supposed to have a boyfriend or husband? Leviticus confirms his suspensions that she is dying and doesn't have much time left. And Delia pops up a few times to try to tempt X, but she doesn't.
