I will say only one thing. This books says no cheating so yes technically that’s true as they were not together and it was only a short while since they met...BUT he went to her room and they were intimate. He clearly wanted her and she wanted him but he left her and that same night he slept with a prostitute!! So in my opinion they were already forming a connection as she was very hurt when she found out the following morning that he left her to sex up another woman so that makes it cheating to me. I know lots of people have different views about what constitutes as cheating but to me once he met h and became obsessed with her being with anyone else was just not right. I also didn’t like the h. She blithely used the fact she didn’t drink and said to this other person because she’s a Muslim.(she’s an alcoholic) but she eats pork and doesn’t practice Salat. I personally found that very offensive as a Muslim myself. I’m not the most religious in terms of doing Salat but I don’t drink and I don’t eat pork because that’s a basic requirement of being a Muslim. Why is she saying she’s a Muslim to cover up the fact she’s an alcoholic? Honestly it really offended me that author couldn’t think of another excuse for this h to use. Moving on h was annoying, immature and prone to stupid behaviour. Her background is no excuse to have fits of childish tantrums just to get a reaction out of the H. I skimmed through so will not rate.

Another win for Jasmin Quinn in her Running with the Devil series. This is book 7 in a series that has already hooked me. There are to be 12 in total and each book, while sharing characters, is a stand alone and can be read by itself.

This book, Shattered, is the story of Rusya Savisin and Esma Akkaya. Rusya is the boss of the Bratva in Vancouver, Canada. He is a ruthless and volatile leader and Esma is forced to infiltrate his home by Jackman, Rusya’s archenemy, and fearsome mob boss in his own right. She lives in fear of both these men but eventually begins to have feelings for Rusya, and he returns them.

What will happen if and when Rusya finds out her true purpose? Will Jackman have her executed if she fails him? Will Rusya? And what about the other players in this story? Who can be trusted and who can’t be?

Jasmin Quinn never disappoints and she shines in this book. Don’t miss out; you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.

I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS ONE. I SKIPPED A FEW BOOKS AND CAME HERE AFTER READING MICHAEL'S STORY. I GOTTA SAY I PREFERRED RUSYA'S STORY, BUT MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I'M A SUCKER FOR THE ALPHA MALE AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

RUSYA is the Pakhan of the Vancouver territory and it's no secret that he and Jackman/Dimitri has been at odds with each other ever since Dimi's father killed Rusya's wife. I've been intrigued by him ever since he has been introduced and also because I'm a sucker for the guys who hold all the power. What's more entertaining then watching a powerful, grown man fall to his knees for a woman he loves?

What Rusya doesn't know is that Dimi has planted a few spies within his compound - Anto and now Esma. When Rusya 'hires' Esma as his linguistic translator, his attraction to her is undeniable and while unwelcome, brings forth emotions that he hasn't felt for more than 12 years after his wife's death. As a man who has honed his temper and rigid control over the years, Esma challenges and brings out the worse in him with her own issues. I won't lie. Rusya has his moments where he blows hot and cold, and he's not adverse to smacking Esma around when his temper blows. Rusya may know how to fuck and pleasure women but he is absolutely shit at wooing them. For once in his 38 years, his genuine attraction will spur him to do something he'd never ever do and it's cute to see him try and win Esma's affections, although it's a miserable attempt most of the time where it ends up hurting Esma's feelings because of his pride and ego. He's also a compelling alpha male who won't stand for verbal profanities in his presence, and if someone were to betray his loyalty, then he is unforgiving. Although, that rule will be challenged when he falls for Esma - the enemy's spy. Obviously Rusya's not going to take it well and when shit hits the fan, I can guarantee you that it will be angsty.

ESMA is a turkish linguist and yay for the first time I'm reading about a Turkish heroine because frankly I've read more thousands of books but never come across a Turk. I do love watching Turkish dramas because the people are all so beautiful. Esma, is no less. Although, coming from a Muslim background, Esma has had a hard life when she was forced into an unwanted marriage at 16 and suffered abused in the hands of her father and husband. One day at her breaking point, Esma killed her husband and was convicted until Jackman pulled her out, giving her a new life that serves his purpose. With her own issues, it won't be long before Esma turns into an alcoholic who turns into a disappointment, which is why Jackman threw her to the wolves and pushed her into Rusya's territory to become a spy. Esma's a contradicting ball of emotions, mostly emotionally driven and insecure but I enjoyed that vulnerable side of her, making her human and prone to mistakes. She's also a woman who just wants love and you can imagine how difficult it is to wring love from a hard man like Rusya.

OVERALL this was a guns and roses kind of story and I loved how edgy, raw and NOT PERFECT it was. The angst, chemistry and anguish between the characters just kept me glued to my seat to finish the whole story and even though it had 80 chapters...it was well worth it.

SPOILERS

I don't know what I just read but am just... flabbergasted. This is my very first book by this author. This isn't a romance isn't it? Say it isn't so! I don't want a vulnerable woman to read this book and think, "Oh, it's ok. He hits me, is mean to me but he really must love me because look at the way he can't seem to stay away from me!".

1. The so-called hero hits and physically hurts the heroine several times throughout the book.ther men in this book hurt the heroine as well. The level of violence against a woman in this book is just... shocking. I mean, he wanted to throw her off an airplane at one point.
2. He throws her into a cell when she's pregnant, because he was so angry with her that he wanted to hit her. So he decided to lock her up in a cell without water, warmth or even a toilet for a night.
3. I thought the author wrote the heroine as someone strong in an overall sense, and she was. But it just seemed like she was always giving in to him, running after him, forgiving him. It was sad. I liked the heroine though. The one star was for her.
4. There was no grovelling or apology or period where he makes it up to her and truly cares for her, after what he did and everything that happened to her. There was one point where he says he'll never hurt her again (after the first counselling session). But that wasn't enough. For what he did to her and what she went through... there should have been more pages dedicated to him realizing what he did and making it up to her. But no. He still treated her poorly - leaving the house for a work trip without telling her, or even calling her, after she (his pregnant wife, might I remind you!) asks him to stay and not go.
5. Despite a clear recommendation that says 'No cheating' - for the safety gang girls, actually there is. After he's intimate with the heroine, he goes to a hotel and has sex with an escort / sex worker. That's cheating in my book because it happens AFTER they are intimate, even though they're not in a relationship at that point.

Girls - there are MANY other dark romance books that have heroes that do not even see another woman the moment he meets the heroine; heroes that are protective and possessive but doesn't lift his hand to hit or hurt her viciously; and heroes who sincerely grovel and apologize for what they've done. Please choose those books and skip this one.

What a read! Just don't know how the author is taking the reader to such new heights with every book. This one has some difficult moments, as one would expect when the head of the Russian maffia's patience is tested, but I just loved the edgy romance between Rusya and Esma.

As with the other books, the characters are strong and resilient, but I feel that these two had to be stronger than the others. There's no geting away from the harshness of this kind of life, but there is also a softer side shown. I also like the way we are finding out little details of how the whole set up between the opposing sides actually filters into the whole series.

Relieved to have my favourite character with us still too. Thought it was going to be touch and go there for a moment, but common sense prevailed and Anto lives to fight another day. CAn't wait for the next book in the series. this author cannot write them fast enough for me!

Just the thought of Rusya's controlled authoritative personality sends shivers down my spine. Yes he seemed harsh at times but when he lets go of that tight control of his emotions with Esma those scenes were earth-shattering. Rusya is a man others fear with good reason but for Esma he does learn how to compromise a bit and work out problems or walk away till cooler heads prevail. Esma is a character that is uninhibited who tests the limits of Rusya's authority. Her perseverance and strong will carry her through situations that would break most people. Their relationship is best described as turbulent with a fiery sexual attraction that should have melted my kindle into a steamy hot mess. This couple does receive their hard earned happy ending while the plot thickens for the continuation of this series. Well done!

Shattered is another phenomenal read in the Running with the Devil series. Rusya, the Bratva Mafia boss, and Esma his Turkish translator / double agent take you on an adventure of nonstop thrills, passion and suspense in various landscapes and locales. I thoroughly enjoyed this lengthy read and got my fill of the complex and explosive characters in the novel. Esma is strong, indepependant and tangled up in several serious messes, one of which is Rusya. Rusya is everything you would want in an intense, alpha, mob boss. I can’t wait for what comes next!

This was a suspenseful and complicated dark romance. I really liked the characters, they are complex and intriguing. Esma liked to keep Rusya on his ties. She is a spitfire to vervally spar with a Russian mob boss and live. She somehow gets under his skin, allowing him to breakdown his barriers to finding love and happiness.

This is an awesome series. It doesn't have to be read in order, although that adds another dimension. Shattered is my favorite; when I finished it I reread it within the week. Esma and Rusya are fire and ice. Esma can't keep her mouth shut even when the consequences are severe; which is why she is one of my favorite heroines ever. The road they take is hard, and their HEA is not easy either. I love how this one doesn't just wrap up with them being completely changed people.
