The Bat. The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. The World's Greatest Detective. Whatever you call him, Bruce "The Batman" Wayne remains one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. And to mark Batman's 80th anniversary, this volume encapsulates the most memorable moments that have left fans stunned, in awe, or heartbroken since his inception.
While Gotham is perpetually in peril, the world in general is better with the Bat in it. Whether it's his sharp wit, his extravagant mansion, or extensive back catalog of vehicles and gadgets. From creator Bob Kane to Tom King's 100-issue run that started in 2018, Batman has morphed with the times.
There's so much to love about Batman and the characters that surrounds them. His villains, his Robins, his love interests…they all find him as irresistible as the general public. The moral ambiguity that makes him one of the most relatable characters in DC's extended universe. Part of "The Big Three" and host to a slew of orphaned Robins, Batman is a pivotal part to many characters in the extended DCU.
Batman has had many writers, his cowl has been worn by a plethora of different actors, and while many people have a favorite Batman, there's no doubt that he's the fan favorite.
No comic book nerd's collection is complete without Batman: 100 Greatest Moments.
Also available from the 100 Greatest Moments of DC Comics series, explore the greatest moments of: Justice League, Super Heroines, Super-Villains, and Flash.
The Batman…The Caped Crusader… The Dark Knight.... The World's Greatest Detective. Bruce "The Batman" Wayne remains one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. With the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, Batman has reached the zenith of popularity. To mark Batman's 80th anniversary, Batman: 100 Greatest Moments encapsulates the most memorable moments of Batman’s story since his inception.
Batman: 100 Greatest Moments is a collection of snapshots taken from Batman’s 80-year history covering a period from 1940 through the 2010s. From Batman to all the characters that surround them; his family, friends, the villains and the other superheroes of the DC universe; all are included in these moments.
The 100 greatest moments are divided into chapters like Origins, The Batman Family, Enemies, and others. From Batman’s backstory to the origins of things like the Bat Signal and also the origin of many Supervillains from Joker, Bane & Scarecrow.
From Batman’s origin to tales from the dark multiverse, Robert Greenberger did a wonderful job of chronicling the highlights of the vast number of Batman stories.. The book presents actual panels from the comics, along with brief information about each panel. Each has a short summary of the event and at least one comic page or cover. It details the key moments in Batman's history. It is interesting to see how the art style has changed throughout the years mainly due to different artists’ interpretations. Apart from the artwork, it also shows how the storylines changed to become darker and edgier with changing times.
Overall, this is a detailed and well-organized mini-encyclopedia on Batman, full of entertaining facts and rare comic strips. If you are a Batman fan, you will surely enjoy this.
Many thanks to the publishers Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books and NetGalley for the ARC.
For those of us who think Batman is all about Adam West and his pals on technicolor tv, there's a whole universe of Batman we've only scratched at. This great volume is chockfull of everything you never imagined you'd learn about Batman, Robin, Alfred, Catwoman, and all the rest of em. Presented in topical chapters which begin with information downloads of all kinds of interesting tidbits followed by clips from eighty years of comics. Don't look for a consistent comic story here. It's more of a greatest hits album and there were sure lots of hits.
Robert Greenberger has written a number of these 100 Greatest Moments books for DC at this point. This one is on par with the others. If you're ever wanted to know more about Batman's history, this is the place to get it. He covers how Batman's origins have changed over the years, his supporting cast, the villains, his greatest moments (knocking out Guy Garner has always been one of my favorites.). Greenberger highlights a lot of Batman's defining moments from the 40's all the way to Dark Nights: Metal and Tom King's current epic run.
Received a review copy from Chartwell Books and NetGalley. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
This book is perfect for Batman fans. I thought at first that it'll be just the "100 greatest moments" taken from different comics, but they're split into different sections dealing with the myth of batman, the family, and others and each moment comes with an analysis that provides a good background for those who haven't read all the comics and most likely won't read all of them and want some context for future reference, like me.
I know Batman from the animated series (Which is discussed a lot here), some stand-alone stories, and the live action films, but I haven't read the comics and this does spoil some things if I do get back to read the comics with all their different releases, but I'm not going to do that, so I enjoyed it immensely.
I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review via netgalley.
What an insightful book into the history of Batman and his side kick, friends and enemies. This book goes back 80 years with stunning comic book pages to boot! This is definitely a collectors item for any Batman loving fans! I found it fascinating and discovered things I didnt know too (which I wont mention as I don't want to ruin it for others). A fantastic history all in one book!
Great «anthology» going back in time to give a try at presenting the 100 greatest moments of the Batman history (not an easy task). Well done, fun to see some of them back and others bring some to my attention that I never read yet! Good job!
*thank you to Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books and Robert Greenberger for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4 stars.
Wow. This is an absolute must for all Batman fans! There is much history in here of Batman that it would be hard for fans to pass up. I'm an average Batman fan and even I enjoyed this immensely. A lot of it is comic style which adds a bit of fun to it. Fans of the show and the world of DC comics would definitely be sorry for not grabbing a copy of this.
Are you a fan of Batman and you want to read more of Batman but also wonder if you might be missing any big stories about Batman over the years? This book by Robert Greenberger looks at the hundred greatest moments in comics concerning Batman both past and present. With a character that has been around for 80 years a book on the top one hundred moments seems helpful and exciting for old and new fans alike! The book consists of six chapters. Chapter one is on the origins story of Batman and also of various sidekicks of Batman. Chapter two is on “Creating the Mythos of Batman” while chapter three looks at those who are in Batman’s family. Chapter four explore further allies of Batman, his friends and lover and chapter looks at his enemies. Chapter six is titled “Out of this world” and deals with Batman outside of contemporary Gotham whether its battling in Victorian Era past or in space and also other dimensions and alternative reality. I enjoyed the format of the book. Each chapter lists certain events in summary form of what happened as a synopsis. Then after the synopsis readers get to see samplings from the comics of that event. The bottom of each page of the comics also have details of what issue and what year/date and title where you can find that story originally. The top of each page of the comics section gives us the number of which of the one hundred moments it is corresponding to the earlier synopsis and also a brief title of what happened that makes it so important. As I said earlier fans will enjoy this format and makes them want to hunger to find the stories and read it for themselves. Reading this there were times I said to myself “I know this story! I read it before!” But even as a fan there were moments where I wasn’t even aware of certain stories told before especially in issues of Batman from decades ago. There were also moments where I heard about but never read the issues and so it is neat to see the discussion and a snapshot of that comic book story. Things I learn include how in past issues Batman actually married Catwoman before; and here in the new DC makes Batman’s marriage to Catwoman as something new and different which it is to a certain degree but then we see that there’s nothing all totally new under the sun. Also I like the story of Batman’s various enemies and there’s some I never heard of before such as KGBeast and Deacon Blackfire. Batman’s villians are memorable and personalities in their own right. Over all a fun read! NOTE: This book was provided to me free by Chartwell Books and Net Galley without any obligation for a positive review. All opinions offered above are mine unless otherwise stated or implied.
This is a must have for any hardcore Batman fan. The book goes through the history of the Caped Crusader, highlighting the best 100 moments in his history. It was a nice read and I loved seeing some of the more historic moments of Batman that I never had a chance to see before.
I received an e-copy of this book from Netgalley, but it does not affect my opinion of the book.
Well-done recollection of 100 of The Dark Knight's finest moments. I appreciated learning things new to me while revisiting old favorites. While some moments hold little interest personally, the ensemble is worthy. I'm ignoring the very few points a few more words could have been useful and rating this work 5 stars.
It was interesting to read all the different versions and how the characters history and story has changed over the years, but I found it rather confusing in the end.
Batman is my favorite superhero so I had to read Batman: 100 Greatest Moments! What a great review or catchup on the entire Batman story.
From Batman’s origin to tales from the dark multiverse, all the important stories are here. Each has a short summary of the event and at least one comic page or cover. The time period covered is 1940 through 2011.
Some of the stories are familiar to this long-time Batman fan, but many were not. Now, I just have to find a copy of Gotham by Gaslight, where Batman takes on Gotham’s own Jack the Ripper in Victorian times!
My favorite part was the artwork. The styles vary widely—partly because of timing and partly due to different artists’ interpretations. Some style changes may be caused by modern painting and printing techniques making the images sharper and clearer. Regardless, I loved seeing them all in one book to make comparisons easy.
If you are a Batman fan, you must pick up Batman: 100 Greatest Moments! It is an excellent reminder of why you already, or soon will, love the Dark Knight. 5 stars!
Thanks to Chartwell Books, Quarto Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Like any BEST OF list, there is sure to be some discussion about what THIS was chosen and not THAT. Still, it gives a decent history of the character (and the comic books). It did make me want to re-visit some of the Golden and Silver Age comics.
Format of the book: The moments are put into groups of varying numbers. Each group starts with the text entries. All relevant comics pages and/or panels are pictured at the end. I'd have preferred for all of the images to be closer to text.
'Batman: 100 Greatest Moments: Highlights from the History of The Dark Knight' by Robert Greenberger is a sprawling look at the 80 year history of one of the greatest characters in comicdom.
The 100 greatest moments are divided in to chapters like Origins, The Batman Family, Enemies, and others. The origins of things like the Bat Signal and how Batman started disappearing after talking to Commissioner Gordon are here. The great writers, story-lines and artists are here as well.
It's really a must-have for any Batfan as well as anyone looking to learn more about the Caped Crusader. I definitely found some story-lines I want to find and read based on this book.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing-Chartwell Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
I’m a big fan of comic books and Batman and this is a great encyclopaedia of knowledge, having read a lot of Batman comics over my time there’s stuff I’d forgotten in here. It’s wonderful, well organised and constructed, full of entertaining facts and bios, this is a must buy for the Batman fan in your life.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Batman: 100 Greatest Moments: Highlights from the History of The Dark Knight by Robert Greenberger is exactly what the title says it is, highlights from the long history of the comic book series.
This will please readers across the entire spectrum of comic book/graphic novel readers. That said, there will be some all along that continuum who will feel it fell short in some way. That seems like I'm stating the obvious, and I am, but in this case I think it needs saying. I would fall into the casual reader category, though Batman is one of the ones I followed more closely than most when I was young. I read comic books from about 1962-1973 fairly regularly and watched various small and large screen presentations my entire life. But I have not made a point of collecting or revisiting them a lot, thus a casual vs hardcore fan. When I read this book I knew I liked it, which I thought would be the easier sell, since casual readers may not be aware of all of the things that have happened over the years. I thought the diehard Batman fans would like it also for both the vintage images and the overview of the entire history. Yet many of the reviews I saw made it sound like only diehard comic book lovers would like it, with some claiming casual readers would not. Well, they are obviously wrong on the last part, I did enjoy it. So I think this is one of those books that will have wide appeal but how big a fan one is may not be a good measuring stick.
This might not present a strictly chronological history of Batman since it is grouped thematically, but it does offer a history nonetheless. Some of the entries are actually interesting as compare and contrast exercises (yes, I was a lit teacher in college). The style of the artwork, the slang used, how dark or light the overall atmosphere is. While we get a limited number of pages we do get them from a broad time frame. That alone made this book interesting whether one loves or merely likes Batman.
The text previews of the key moments in each group contextualizes these moments within their own time as well as juxtaposes them with the other selections from that group. While I understand some wanting the images closer to the introductions, I think it would have detracted from the whole point of grouping the entries. I didn't really have trouble remembering what the text said by the time I got to the images, so it was not a problem for me.
So I will recommend this widely for fans of Batman, both casual and diehard, as well as readers of comic books and graphic novels. I will also say that if you are wanting long excerpts from the originals, or expected some sort of mash up graphic novel (in direct opposition to the title of the book, but whatever), you may be disappointed. Also, if you are hoping for a straightforward history of Batman as told through these highlights, it isn't quite that, though the history presented does make a lot of connections between various time periods that might have gotten lost in a standard history.
Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.
NaNaNa Batman! What would you consider the greatest Batman moments to be? Robert Greenberger searches for the top 100 moments, through the long history of Batman. Notably, staying within the boundaries of the “core continuity” of the DC comics featuring Batman. Not that Greenberg refrains from referencing the 1960’s Batman TV Series, Batman: The Animated Series, or the Tim Burton movies in passing. Each moment has a well thought out description of the event and its significance. In no particular order of importance. Any comic passages referenced are fully represented and located in color at the back of each chapter. This is a great addition to the book, as it is nice to see the comics themselves.
As a casual reader of the batman comics there is quite a lot of information in this book, about the history and creation of Batman. A majority of the historical information is limited to the original Detective Comics through about the 90s, with brief mentions of the New 52 (2011-2015) through Batman Who Laughs (2019). So, fans looking for information about the newer comics will be somewhat disappointed. This also means there are no mentions of some characters, sorry Luke Fox. Also, surprisingly only brief mentions of the Justice League, and its coinciding superheroes as important moments.
A majority of these moments are categorized by how characters within the series meet, or some larger interesting main comic book events. How they effected Batman as a character or the overarching story, is up to the reader’s interpretation. As well organized as this book is, a timeline would be helpful. Events such as Earth-1, Earth-2, Crisis on Infinite Earths, post-Crisis, Rebirth, Prime Earth, New 52, etc. are not explained fully or written in order. So, a reader new to Batman comics will be left with a puzzling read.
Would I, as Greenberger assumes, have a different top 100 moments? Yes, but this book has some persuasive additions. There is a lot more to learn and read about Batman, and this book is a great introduction to the origins of Batman.
Here we have a collection of Batman's greatest moments in comics spanning from his earliest 1940s appearance to some of his most recent arcs. If you're a big fan of the Caped Crusader, then you might be interested in many of these 100 summaries that are split into six sections: (1) Origins, (2) Creating the Mythos, (3) The Batman Family, (4) Allies, Friends, and Lovers, (5) Enemies, and (6) Out of this World.
The pages are filled with Greenberger's summaries of key moments in Batman's life. We get a paragraph on Crime Alley, retelling the pivotal moment in a young Bruce Wayne's life when his parents were murdered right in front of his eyes. We get another paragraph on Introducing the Bat-Signal. Another on Catwoman's First Kiss. On and on, we get these descriptions of big moments and then, for some of the moments, we get to look at a page or two from the comic in question.
It's an okay idea, but I felt the summaries to be somewhat bland and uninspired. Some of the moments selected seemed unimportant and, to be honest, quite boring. And the few clips from comics that we did get didn't satisfy the desire to actually see the moments that we were being told about. Again, hardcore Batman fans might want this to add to their collection. It could serve as a nice "walk down memory lane." But most readers won't find this collection too appealing.

These list books are often challenging and very divisive because it's an opinion (yes, a very well researched one but people have their own thoughts on these things and the Dark Knight has a LARGE group of opinionated people including myself). I think you can see this less of a Top 100 Moments and more like a mini encyclopedia of Batman. I think this book is great, but a few things will limit its overall longevity. By marking what is considered the first 80 years...this book pretty much contains the moments from the 1940's until 2019. I believe some of the moments (Such as Batman R.I.P. are ripped into 2 moments and while that allows to give credit to parts of the story...I felt that it could have been one. Also, they are light on what I believe was the moments between 2010-2019...and there are some MOMENTS! Again, that is an opinion, but I felt some clutch ones were missed. That said, they caught some that I believe are all too often overlooked...making this book essential to the hardcore Batman fans wanting to know the big as well as small moments. The division into chapters such as: The Batman Family, Enemies, Origins, etc. allows this list to not become one of argument on the numbering of the moments, but just give credit to them...which is probably the best approach I have seen in a long time. Robert Greenberger should be given a TON of credit for the breakdown and this book containing the actual pages of these moments....PURE GENIUS!
I received a copy of Batman: 100 Greatest Moments: Highlights from the History of the Dark Knight through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Batman: 100 Greatest Moments is exactly what you'd expect and hope for. This amazing book collects the 100 best moments in the beloved and sometimes controversial Batman we all know and love. Saying that they're going to collect the top 100 moments is quite a lofty goal, but I would say that they more than kept their promise here. I loved reading through this selection, and for a variety of reasons. Batman: 100 Greatest Moments includes everything from the original origin story of Batman to some of the more modern day plot arcs. Honestly, it was quite refreshing seeing some of the older plots once again, and of course the newer ones as well. What I really loved about this collection is the way each moment is presented. There's the obvious, of course. Listing everything out, and even including the images. But the book goes a step further – including as many pages as feels right, and even provides a few paragraphs of description and context. It's perfect.
This is a most for any Batman fan detailing the life and exploits of the world’s favorite cape crusader. I am a huge fan of the Batman franchise and his torture soul keeps me invested after decades of loving the character including the many Robins, Bat Girl, the villains and his relationship with Detective Gordon.
Greenberger lovingly puts to page a detailed account of Bruce Wayne’s greatest hits and although there are some points that some people with arguably wish that were added, I think the author has done a remarkable job to highlight these moments. Going over the 80+ years of Batman is no easy feat and admire Greenberger’s work
The comic panels are gloriously displayed and for one I will be ordering my own copy of this as an e-book version does to do this justice. Categorizing the chapters is a true highlight and including tid bits of information to help add the fascination of this character makes this a must.
Overall, this is the go to book about Batman that any fan or new fan will love. Any book that can highlight the Dark Knight and show what incredible world and comic this is has my admiration written all over it. This is a true winner and a must to have, own and cherish.
My curiosity was piqued with this book since while not a die hard fan, I find the character of Batman interesting due to his complexities. I’ve watched the TV series, the films and read some graphic novels however there is so many gaps in my knowledge within the source material These highlighted hits helped me become more familiar with additional characters and storylines that I was either unaware of or only heard in passing. The author had clearly done a lot of research with each of the entries not just mentioning storylines & characters but the writers, artists and editors.
My only issue was with the viewing of a pdf of the proof on a tablet as I was unable to read the panels from the comics/graphic novels properly. I couldn’t read the text as it was getting to blurry, I had to increase the size due to the formatting of the pdf. This was slightly disappointing as having examples that match the entries was a fantastic addition to show the various style of artwork. I’m sure they will look glorious in the print version.
Overall the book will look good with the artwork and the chart like information will appeal to fans.
I received a copy from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I was lucky enough to have my wish for this book granted on NetGalley, so that I could share my thoughts before the release of the book!
Batman: 100 Greatest Moments is a collection of snapshots taken from many portions of Batman’s 80 year history, which is sure to delight comic historians and causal fans alike! The book presents actual panels from the comics, along with information on Batman’s background researched outside of framing of panels. As a long time Batman fan, I was extremely impressed by the content and style of this book!
Robert Greenberger did a wonderful job crafting an engaging and entertaining work, chronicling the highlights of what could easily be an overwhelming amount of Batman stories. This book is the perfect testament to the longevity of DC Comic’s beloved Dark Knight!
My Recommendation- I would recommend this book for Batman fans seeking a way to obtain a summary of Batman’s history, without attempting to read the thousands of issues written about him. Additionally, this book would make an excellent addition to any comic buff’s collection, as it provides a more in depth study of Batman than nearly any other book around!
Language: PG (3 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG While all Batman fans might quibble over some of Batman’s “greatest moments,” the 100 moments compiled in this book unarguably illustrate how great Batman is -- and has been for decades. This book is great for Batman fans interested in the history and evolution of Batman through the years, as Greenberger’s focus is on the non-fiction, outside-the-comic aspect of the Batman series. Obviously, I should have read the description of the book more carefully because I was under the impression that Greenberger had compiled a graphic novel mash-up of Batman’s best moments through the years. The introduction hyped me up as it gave a summary of Batman’s evolutions, but I was overwhelmed with disappointment to see more words than pictures in the first chapter. Thankfully, Greenberger still includes pages from graphic novels to illustrate the 100 greatest moments -- they just come after the explanations and descriptions. Overall, the book is pretty cool, but I think it’s best suited for niche comic lovers and not the general, casual peruser. Reviewed for https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/
Batman: 100 Greatest Moments is a great book for any comic book fans (not just Batman fans). In the book, Robert Greenberger highlights 100 stories from the 75 years of Batman comics. Each moment is given a brief write up and accompany with this corresponding panels from the comic book.
The book is divided into six chapters, from the origins of Batman, which includes the death of his parents in crime alley and the adopting of Dick Grayson. To the Bat Family (highlighting the various Robins and introduction to Batgirl). To Allies, Friends and Lovers, which showcases Batman various love interests including CatWoman. And this “friendship” with Superman.
Many of the moments are those you would expect. Like I mentioned the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents (moment 2) or the introduction of Damien (moment 35), or Two-Face’s origin story (moment 59). However, there were some surprises. The relationship between Batman and Alfred (moment 23) or when Batman unmasked before Commissioner Gordon (moment 39).
As I said this is a great book for any comic book fan and would make an amazing gift.
I confess that a big part of this high rating is probably the fact that I totally agree with the vast majority of the moments picked as the 'greatest.' But what makes this extra interesting is that the author goes extra deep into the history of Batman and writes about the different people that had a hand in creating the characters and moments that have become iconic enough to be considered the best of Batman. It also includes the most relevant pages of the comics from which the moments were picked, so it has a secondary enjoyment factor in seeing the different art styles from the different ages. The one downside I can think of is that it kind of takes a certain level of Batman knowledge for granted. I'm not sure a casual Batman reader will enjoy this as much, or even be able to fully understand the importance of the moments within Batman's history.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Chartwell Books for the chance to read.
I am not the biggest comic book reader but have purchased a couple of graphic novels over the years, so to be allowed to review Batman: 100 Greatest Moments was a welcomed opportunity.
The book by Robert Greenberger provides you with a background to some of Batman’s greatest stories as well as shows how the characters and artwork have developed over the years. I am sure aficionados will not always agree with the choices made but it will give some the opportunity to catch up with the history of Batman. Reading this as an average fan, I was surprised with some of the character developments of Batman over the years and come to appreciate the variation of the stories over the last 80 or so years.
This is one for the fans of Batman or the casual reader who want to learn a little more of the world's greatest detective.
This was provided by Netgalley for an honest review.
This was a pretty comprehensive look at 100 great moments in the history of Batman in comics, but it is definitely geared towards those who already know a lot about the issues and story lines. I myself have an interest in the character, but haven't dived into the comics in any great depth and there were definitely things that left me a little confused because a certain level of knowledge was assumed. With that being said, I really enjoyed the inclusion of the relevant comic panels at the end of each chapter and I thought that this was a well rounded exploration of the character - it has definitely left me wanting to pick up the comics! I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is awesome! If you love Batman and Comic Strip Magazines this is for you! Thank you NetGalley for the Arc copy with Quarto Publishing Group. This is effectively an encyclopaedia of Batman’s History since inception!
This book is beautifully presented panels of incredible detail and drawing. It illustrates how Bruce Wayne becomes our Dark Knight hero becomes darker and depicts key moments it becomes edgier.
This is an awesome encapsulated time frame of Batman’s best stories. I really enjoyed these pinnacle moments.
I can’t wait to read this on a tablet to show my nephews who are batman crazy! This would be more epic in print hardback Glossybook and not just a PDF download file.
If you are looking for behind the scenes stories about your favorite dark knight, this is the book for you! This Batman tome is a Batman encyclopedia of awesome facts about Batman and the entire bat family. I really enjoyed the stories of Bob Kane and the beginnings of Batman. I learned a lot of the influences that made Batman, the Batman. I never knew some of the characters from 1930s comics that influenced Bob Kane as he created Batman. It’s an awesome read for any Batman fan. You can learn about older Batman stories you never knew about and then go find them in Dc Universe or your favorite comic store!
I highly recommend this book. If you buy it, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it and find more Batman comics to read!
