3.5*
Honestly, I had higher expectations for this one, since it was the first adult thriller I've read in a long time, and maybe that was its downfall.
Going to keep this review short and sweet, since this is simply a thriller and there's not much to discuss beyond the basics.
My problems with The Housemate are that It's way too long for what is it.. Like it could've easily lost a 100 pages without really affecting the central storyline.
The other problem is that it was seriously slow. Like it took around 180-200 pages to finally start seeing shit happens, and it was minimum shit, like pictures disappearing and a necklace going missing.
I'm not a fan of that, simply because I believe that a standalone thriller should hook me in right from the start and not waste time.
I enjoyed the flashback chapters way more than the modern day ones, mainly because of how creepy the child was, and how absolutely horrendous her mother was.
Like there was some serious abuse being afflicted on this kid, and maybe that's why she was fucked up as an adult.
Her mother was a complete asshole, and whilst the author tried to explain it and make us feel bad for the mother, it simply wasn't enough to justify the horseshit treatment of her child, and maybe that was the point for all I know.
The dad was absolutely pathetic, knowing and seeing that his daughter is being seriously abused (the mother literally tried to drown the kid) and did basically nothing.
Megan and Chloe had an interesting chemistry, and the addition of the maybe psycho Sammi was a fun little thing.
Like I don't know what else to say about the modern day ladies, because there really wasn't much to it, to be honest.
All in all, this was a generis thriller that failed to impress me with everything except for the big twist/s at the end.
Do I recommend it? Maybe, if you love thrillers and are used to them.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I didn't really believe that Sammi was the kid in the flashback, knowing that this is a thriller and needed a big twist, so I kept my eyes open, and it turned out that I was right!
I loved that Megan turned out to be the big villain of the story, which only made sense since the author killed off Sami, thus surprising me because I did not see it coming.
It was a seriously good twist, which pushed this book to a 3.5 rating.
