Menacing!
That’s the word to describe this book
When I read the title and the blurb I kinda imagined I knew all what this book would hold and how it would ‘pan out’, suffice to say I was wrong!
Yes there are elements of ‘Single White Female’ in the book but it is more, so much more than I imagined
Another of those books where I am
wary to say too much in case give anything away but it safe to say this.....Megan, Chloe and Samantha who share a house together will rue the day they decided to...all 3 main players are superbly cast and you will make
assumptions as I did and be led very neatly down the ‘garden path’ but keep your mind open and be aware....things are never as they seem
The story goes back in time for one of the 3 ( again YOU need to find out who ) and they have a shocking childhood and there is violent as well as psychologically disturbing scenes to be aware of ( not too many , the fear of what is going to happen is often left at that ) and also worth mentioning there is a scene with a cat that I avoided once was aware of it,again only a few lines but again worth telling you about, both things I have mentioned are a small ish but pertinent inclusion in the book that makes the bigger picture more understandable
I am not a fan of the word ‘riveted’ but this book had me so and it went from strength to strength and ended up as unexpected as I could have imagined when I started it
Very well told and a book that will leave you with goosebumps when you come to the final sentence......

C.L Pattison has been put on the level with some very accomplished authors, but The Housemate has proven she is in a league of her own.

This gripping and disturbing read is brilliantly written.

Not every author can write a novel so adept at deception. It puts the reader in a position where they think one thing but something else entirely is going on

Chloe and Megan rent a gorgeous house, the owner has just passed away and they instantly fall in love with it. In order to pay the high rental they meet Sammi, and she soon rents the spare room.

This book is written in two timelines. The present, where we get to know the three women, the strange happenings and Chloe's demons with night terrors, and the past, where the abuse of a small little girl at the hands of her mother and her beautiful and needful friendship with Anouk.

The psychological thread in this book is hard to read at times, and for some, including me who had a hard time growing up, it can be quite triggering. But this is a fabulous tale and I loved that each with turn of the page it brought with it a fascinating look into human survival, jealously and hate.

The Housemate was a one sit read for me and I absolutely loved it. It has all the feelings of dread, the twists and the shocks that you would expect from such a read. It is dark and disturbing and comes with a sadness for the most unlikeliest of characters.

The Japanese have a special word for it-kenzoku. Literally translated, it means 'family'. It's the deepest sort of connection there is, deeper than soulmates even-almost like you've known each other in a past life.

The Housemate

by C.L. Pattison

This book SHOULD have been for me. Three friends, one of whom might be bonkers..all living together in a nice house when gradually really creepy stuff starts to happen. And I did love the beginning and enjoyed some other aspects of the book as well. It certainly wasn't bad..at all. So why didn't I love it?

For a few reasons. Number one is..I think the book should have been longer. The creepy stuff starts to happen almost at once. And I did not feel like I really knew the three women at all yet before all the batshit crazy stuff starts. I guess I wanted more a slow burn. Things get crazy VERY quickly.

Second..TRIGGER ALERT.There is the brutal death of an animal and anyone who knows me knows I hate that and always take a point off..even with some books I consider amazing. I just dislike this plot device as do other readers. I did not expect to find that in this book and it was a let down.

Third..I really liked learning at least a bit about what made each girl unique. I laughed like crazy over Maggie's scheme to get back at her married lover. Again, I just felt like that started to take a back seat. The scares were creepy but just so much came so quickly and would anyone REALLY stay in the house by that time?

I just wanted more story about the individuals themselves so I could care about them..even Tom, the sound engineer. And the last thing I did not like was all the flipping to the past..that format really does not do it for me so as a result this was not my favorite.

Still, there were some enjoyable aspects. Wring was very good. I loved reading about the the women's individual careers. I loved the "t wist" when it happened. I loved the occasional humor like what I mentioned above about the married lover.

I would look for other works by this writer because the writing was excellent. It is just the story was not so much for me. Still, without the animal brutality, this most likely would have been a 3 .5 for me. Recommended to fans of 'Single white female" types of thrillers who do not mind animal killings.

The Housemate was astonishingly good! This was a really great story with superb writing and it had me glued to the pages until I had finished the entire book. The ending was an absolute shocker! Don't miss this one!

The Housemate by C.L. Pattison I’ve lived in a few house shares in my time and so the idea of this book really appealed to me. The storyline and the Gothic-style house setting drew me in from the get-go and I loved the ever-changing dynamic between the three housemates and the way the author created uncertainty about all the characters, so you never knew who to trust.

Running alongside the main narrative is the story of a young girl from an unstable home, who suffers some pretty brutal treatment and ends up bearing the scars (psychologically, as well physically). It’s up to the reader to work out which one of the women she grows up to be, because her identity isn’t revealed until the final chapter – and I don’t mind admitting that I got it totally wrong! A well-written and suspenseful read with an ending that will shock as well as satisfy.

This was a fantastic read. The storyline thrilled me and kept me on the edge of my toes never knowing what would happen next. The pace is excellent, slowing down in bits so that you drop your guard and then boom it hits you with it's newest surprise twist. This was very cleverly written. I never saw the ending coming and I cannot wait for this to come out so I can get my hands on a paperback. I will definitely be one-clicking this author from now on.

Done with these mindless thrillers I say! This story has been done too many times and much better at this. The story was pointless but I had to finish to get to the “ twist” which was just as I expected. Poorly written, poor character development, too much silliness and just well, pointless. These are just not fun reading anymore. You become almost jaded by the few good ones out there. Everyone seems to think they can write a decent thriller. Unfortunately they seem to get picked up by publishers who are trying to cash in on the craze. Ugh.

I thought this book was good but it was a bit of hit and miss for me. It was quite slow and not very entertaining. None of the characters stood out for me that well and it had no real twist or anything exciting happening. It was well written and I think the best bits were the ones from the past. It’s an easy read but not so great if you like thrillers with more happening.

This is the kind of thriller that only comes around once in a while. The way the author kept me reading well into the middle of the night was amazing

I really enjoyed this twisty page-turner. Told from three different perspectives, it’s about two friends who think they’ve found the perfect housemate. But before long, weird things keep happening that leave them fearing for their safety and even questioning their sanity. A creeping tension builds steadily throughout the book until a shocking tragedy occurs and the truth about the women's mysterious new housemate is finally revealed. About two-thirds of the way through the book, I was convinced I had it all worked out, but I got it sooo wrong!

This is a fantastic book - it starts with best friends Chloe and Megan securing a new house to share. They can't really afford to pay for the property without a housemate so settle on Sammi. However, soon after Sammi moves in problems start - she doesn't disclose much about herself, seems sneaky and intent on dividing the friends. What makes this book particularly interesting is the way the story is told - we get Megan's perspective, Chloe's perspective and that of an unknown little girl who is having more than her fair share of problems.

This is a book that gives you a real punch in the gut when you've finished!! It's a great read, not overly complicated with a relatively small number of characters. I read this in one sitting - it's definitely a page turner with a fast pace.

I really really enjoyed this book, a gripping page turner that follows the story of 3 people , Chloe, Megan and an unknown childhood character with some disturbing and abusive memories. The book tells the story of how Chloe and Megan sub let a room out in their home to Sammi (a fashion journalist who likes to keep a low profile , suddenly things aren’t what they seem and strange things start to happen around the house.

I thought I had the plot sussed but right at the end it blew me away and proved me wrong!
A fantastic psychological thriller and is fully worth its 5 stars

When I started reading "The Housemate," I was excited to dive in and get going. Good psychological thrillers can be hard to come by; some are written too simply for the twists to be effective while others try too hard and leave you with an ending so complicated you never could have guessed it. This book found the perfect balance. It keeps you guessing with the differing viewpoints, but at the end of it all the ending we are left with is logical and satisfying.

There are three different narrators for our story: Chloe, Megan, and an unnamed girl with a troubling outlook on life. These stories unfold together, with the girl narrating her life and Chloe and Megan alternating the narration of theirs. While some stories with alternating narrators and story lines can quickly become over-complicated, I never felt like I was having to work to keep up with the plot.

This book was a quick read; not because there wasn't a good story, but because it kept me engaged and reading from the time I picked it up to the time I put it down. Psychological fiction is a difficult genre to conquer, and in my opinion, Pattison has accomplished that. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for anything she publishes in the future.

Content Notes:
Linguistics - This book was very well-written. While it was a bit wordy in places, I didn't think that detracted from the story, particularly since it was primarily being used to produce the vivid imagery that was present throughout the book.

Profanity - Foul language was infrequent but severe, and primarily occurred during the girl's portions of the narrative.

Sexual Content - Sexual relationships are present, although there are no details given. One of the girls has a steady boyfriend and another develops a relationship during the book. There is an affair that takes place.

Violence & Gore - This book is advertised as being a psychological thriller and does touch on some unpleasant topics. Among these are domestic abuse , animal abuse , general violence , and scenes of mental terror .

I received a digital copy of "The Housemate" from the author through Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review.

Best friends for years Chloe and Megan find the perfect house to rent, the one drawback being the rent. The only way they can afford it is to take in a third tenant. Enter Sammi Charlesworth, glamorous freelance writer for fashion magazines she's not without her own oddities. No belongings to speak of, no friends, nothing on the all-important modern necessity of social media, a manner which in a flash can be cloyingly friendly or distant and sarcastic.

What could possibly go wrong?

Chloe and Megan each take chapters in turn, but in between are chapters by an unknown eleven-year old girl. Her home life is unpleasant with a mother who not only dislikes her but is prone to violence, and an ineffective father. Sometimes this child is mean, nasty and downright horrible. Who is this child? It's obviously one of the three girls – but which one?

The problems with this novel lie in several areas, not least of which is the lack of originality. It's all been done before - “the twist you won't see coming” - yes, you probably will, just as I did, quite early on. Then there's the author's annoying way of over stating every single thing; nothing is left to chance as Chloe and Megan explain everything as they're going along. We, the readers are not credited with the intelligence to work even simple things out for ourselves, for example:

“.......I was still preoccupied with what I'd seen when a vibration coming from my pocket of my white tunic signalled the arrival of a text message. I was in the middle of ward rounds, so it wasn't until they were over and I was heading towards the staff kitchen to make myself a coffee that I had a chance to check my phone”. Was all that really necessary?

“.....the big green water butt that was full to the top because of all the rain we've had......” Rain is what usually fills a water butt, so why do we need to be told.

There are so many examples of this. A good tight editing could have taken fifty pages off it. It wouldn't have done much to alter the plot, but it would be less tedious to read.

An ordinary run-of-the-mill story with no surprises and nothing original.

My thanks o Amazon for an ARC

As my last read by this author was sooooo good & I'd forgotten this one was lost in the depths of my tbr pile, it was only fair that I made it my next read...guess who's not been to sleep yet! 🤷‍♀️

Another fabulous read from C. L. Pattison, once I'd started I didn't stop until I'd finished. The story was so compelling, disturbing & creepy. Totally wasn't expecting the big twist at the end, that put paid to everything that I had been thinking.

Best friends Megan & Chloe move into their new home, the only way they are able to pay the full rent is by filling the box room with another roommate. No sooner does Sammi settle in, strange things start happening...
will the girls regret allowing a stranger to live in their home?

Chloe and Megan have been best friends for twelve years. When they find the perfect home for lease, they need a third roommate to swing the rent. They meet Sammi who seems a perfect fit, but after she moves in things start to go haywire. Sammi is secretive about her past and doesn’t appear to have friends or family. Items go missing, Chloe suffers a setback at her job that appears to be the result of sabotage, and a special dress belonging to Megan is irreparably damaged—just a few of the oddities that arise after Sammi enters their lives.

This book reads very quickly (I finished it in two nights), and it is definitely a page turner. Chloe and Megan alternate POVs, along with a third mystery narrator who isn’t revealed until the end. Although I guessed the identity of that narrator halfway through the book, there were plenty of twists that took me by surprise, and when the ending was said and done, I admired how the author let the story play out.

There are a few places were you need to go with the flow and not analyze too closely (i.e, nope, that wouldn’t happen in the real world) but if you’re looking for an entertaining read that would translate well into a cable channel movie, this book is gold.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Headline for an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

When two best friends, Chloe and Megan find the perfect house to rent, but can't afford the high rental they agree to take on a 3rd housemate, Sammi.
Sammi has a great job, she's smart and sophisticated, and loves cooking! Chloe and Megan hastily decide she's the one. Things get off to a great start, but Sammi isn't forthcoming with information about her past, she doesn't have many friends, and doesn't socialise that much outside of work. And, when weird things start to happen to Chloe and Megan, and personal items disappear they soon become suspicious....who is Sammi?
The story is told by Chloe and Megan in chapters, which gives the story great pace. The suspense is also carried along with interspersed chapters told by an 11 year old girl who is neglected and abused both mentally and physically by her Mother....who is she?
This story is full of suspense and has an unexpected ending. For those who love this genre, and a quick easy read, don't miss this one!

Flew through this book - the story of two friends, Chloe and Megan who find the perfect house to rent, but can't quite afford the rent, so take on a third house mate, Sammi. All is perfect to beginning with but Sammi's behaviour quickly becoming questionable and with Chloe's night tremors which she suffered from as a child returning, it's far from a happy home.

Running along side the main narrative is the story of a young girl at school, lonely, without any friends, coming from an unstable home life, she manipulates situations to her benefit., this character isn't spoken about by name, so it's up to the reader to work out who she grew up to be (until it's revealed at the end.)

I'd worked out who this character was quite early on, but it didn't stop my enjoyment of the story, I just sat back and watch it all unfold.

Really enjoyed this read and would recommend. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book - this is my honest opinion.

The housemate, what a plot twist!
I have read The Book Of You by this author which I enjoyed so was so eager to read the housemate.
The books about two best friends (Chloe & Megan) who find the perfect home although rent is high so they decide to have a housemate. The housemate they choose is Samantha but they know nothing about her life, family & not a lot of info on social media but after quizzing her they think she’s going to be the perfect housemate. Things keep happening in the house, items going missing and Chloe and Megan begin getting alarmed.
I love how this book skips back to the past but you’re left guessing who’s past it could be. It’s quite fast passed and so hard to put down. Really good page turner and a huge twist.
Thanks for #netgalley & the author for letting me read this book in return of an honest review of the book.

I enjoyed this - quite easy to predict the twist BUT I did keep second guessing and wondering if I was right!

Megan, Chloe and Sammy are housemates but why do things keep going missing and why is Chloe suddenly having night terrors.

I listened to this and one of the voices properly annoyed me but also it stopped me flicking to the end which I’d have been tempted to with a real book

Told through different narrators and one from the past who you don’t know who is. Cleverly written

Honestly, I had higher expectations for this one, since it was the first adult thriller I've read in a long time, and maybe that was its downfall.

Going to keep this review short and sweet, since this is simply a thriller and there's not much to discuss beyond the basics.

My problems with The Housemate are that It's way too long for what is it.. Like it could've easily lost a 100 pages without really affecting the central storyline.
The other problem is that it was seriously slow. Like it took around 180-200 pages to finally start seeing shit happens, and it was minimum shit, like pictures disappearing and a necklace going missing.
I'm not a fan of that, simply because I believe that a standalone thriller should hook me in right from the start and not waste time.

I enjoyed the flashback chapters way more than the modern day ones, mainly because of how creepy the child was, and how absolutely horrendous her mother was.
Like there was some serious abuse being afflicted on this kid, and maybe that's why she was fucked up as an adult.
Her mother was a complete asshole, and whilst the author tried to explain it and make us feel bad for the mother, it simply wasn't enough to justify the horseshit treatment of her child, and maybe that was the point for all I know.
The dad was absolutely pathetic, knowing and seeing that his daughter is being seriously abused (the mother literally tried to drown the kid) and did basically nothing.

Megan and Chloe had an interesting chemistry, and the addition of the maybe psycho Sammi was a fun little thing.
Like I don't know what else to say about the modern day ladies, because there really wasn't much to it, to be honest.

All in all, this was a generis thriller that failed to impress me with everything except for the big twist/s at the end.
Do I recommend it? Maybe, if you love thrillers and are used to them.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I didn't really believe that Sammi was the kid in the flashback, knowing that this is a thriller and needed a big twist, so I kept my eyes open, and it turned out that I was right!
I loved that Megan turned out to be the big villain of the story, which only made sense since the author killed off Sami, thus surprising me because I did not see it coming.
It was a seriously good twist, which pushed this book to a 3.5 rating.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

I quite enjoyed this, however I felt that I did guess quite a lot of the aspects and there were no mind blowing moments, that I was left waiting for.

A domestic thriller with lots of gripping and disturbing twists.

I suspected every single characters, and was constantly changing my mind during this book.

A quick read that will scare anyone living with housemates.

That being said, there were no *gasp* moments and it was pretty clear from the beginning which direction the book was heading.

I found it easy to get into, easy to read and easy to form a connection with the characters.
