Trump vs. China: Facing America's Greatest Threat

Rate this book
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich sounds the warning bell that communist-ruled China poses the biggest threat to the United States that we have seen in our lifetime.

The United States is currently engaged in a competition with the Chinese government unlike any other that we have witnessed before. This is a competition between the American system—which is governed by freedom and the rule of law—and a totalitarian dictatorship that is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. These are two different visions for the future; one will succeed, and one will fail.

It is possible for America to respond to the Chinese Communist Party's efforts, but doing so will require new thinking, many big changes, and many hard choices for our leaders in government and private sector.

Newt Gingrich's Trump vs. China serves as a rallying cry for the American people and a plan of action for our leaders in government and the private sector. Written in a language that every American can understand but still rich in detail and accurate in fact, Trump vs. China exposes the Chinese Communist Party's multi-pronged threat against the United States and what we must do as a country to survive.

Newt Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. After he was elected Speaker, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people. Under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in sixteen years. In addition, the Congress restored funding to strengthen defense and intelligence capabilities, an action later lauded by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

Today Newt Gingrich is a Fox News contributor. He is a Senior Advisor at Dentons, the world’s largest law firm with more than 6,500 lawyers in 50 countries and offices in more than 125 cities. He advises the firm’s world-class Public Policy and Regulation practice. He is also a Senior Scientist at Gallup.

From May 2011 to May 2012, Newt Gingrich was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States, winning the South Carolina and the Georgia primaries. The campaign was especially notable for its innovative policy agenda, its effort to bring new coalitions into the Republican fold, and for Newt’s debate performances. His $2.50 a gallon energy plan set off a nationwide discussion about the use of America’s energy resources.
But there is a lot more to Newt Gingrich than these remarkable achievements. As an author, Newt has published twenty-nine books including 14 fiction and nonfiction New York Times best-sellers.
Non-fiction books include his latest, Breakout, in addition to A Nation Like No Other, Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny, To Save America, Rediscovering God in America, 5 Principles for a Successful Life, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less, Real Change, A Contract with the Earth, Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America, To Renew America, Lessons Learned the Hard Way, Saving Lives & Saving Money, Window of Opportunity, and The Art of Transformation. He is also the author of a series of historical fiction books including, Gettysburg, Grant Comes East, Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant the Final Victory, 1945, Pearl Harbor, Days of Infamy, To Make Men Free, To Try Men’s Souls, Valley Forge, and Victory at Yorktown. These novels are active history studies in the lessons of warfare based on fictional accounts of historical wartime battles and their aftermaths. His latest novel, Treason, is the sequel to Duplicity and is a thriller of Washington intrigue and international terrorism.

Newt and his wife, Callista, host and produce historical and public policy documentaries. Recent films include The First American, Divine Mercy: The Canonization of John Paul II, A City Upon A Hill, America at Risk, Nine Days That Changed The World, Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny, Rediscovering God in America, Rediscovering God in America II: Our Heritage, and We Have the Power.

In his post-Speaker role, Newt has become one of the most highly sought-after public speakers, accepting invitations to speak before prestigious organizations throughout the world. Because of his own unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Newt is able to share unique and unparalleled insights on a wide range of topics. His audiences find him to be not only educational but also inspirational. For more information about Newt’s speaking engagements, please visit the Worldwide Speakers Group.

Before you read this book, you should read The Hundred-Year Marathon by Michael Pillsbury. Pillsbury’s book is outstanding in that it lays out how we have underestimated and understood the Chinese and how we helped them gain power. Gingrich’s book goes into great detail as to how China more recently is metastasizing and putting its tentacles into governments around the world. This book also points out repeatedly how America sheepishly ignores the fact that China is brazenly communist. Both books are great reads (no pun intended), but it is better to first read Pillsbury’s book and then read Gingrich’s.

This book is surprisingly nonpartisan insomuch as Gingrich gives Trump credit for taking corrective steps as opposed to his predecessors. Gingrich gives a litany of sensible changes that need to be done and many not so popular changes. I read this book as a follow up to "Stealth War". Gingrich's book definitely contains more information and you will come away with a far deeper understanding of the risk of China.

This books is scary on so many levels. It has a great lite history lesson on China and gives you a detailed view into the Chinese mindset. I cannot believe that Biden said China is not a threat. China is a larger threat than Russia and all other countries combined. Climate change is ridiculous compared to China. China has not heretofore, nor does it plan to comply with any Global Warning / Climate Change treaty et al. Even at our current level, we are getting our asses handed to us, I can only imagine when we bring the "New Green Deal". We might as well commit mass suicide.

Gingrich calls out the media for purposely not informing the public about the danger of China. Hollywood and media carry water for China. Not only that but we sadly saw how the NBA capitulated to China and the very same folks who purport to support free speech and that recently have embraced the Constitution in its "traditional meaning" turned their backs on Hong Kong. I think both putrid parties are part of the problem. As I mentioned in the “Stealth War” review, Mitch McConnell, Biden, The Clinton’s and so many more are guilty.

You hear the left now saying that the Senate is a rubber stamp for the POTUS, well this is the same issue with the Dems and the media and law enforcement. If the investigators are corrupt, how can we expect the guilty to be brought to justice. How can we expect authorities holding these China enablers accountable when many of them are as, if not more corrupt than the aforementioned.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly. It should be read by anyone looking to understand what China's game plan is.

That was The Economist issue of 1995 (March 11th). Newt Gingrich, the “internationalist”.

He’s been recently interviewed by Breitbart, and he said a few interesting things regarding this book. Like:

(1) The model he had in his mind back in 1992 “was wrong”.

(2) It seemed Gingrich believed China would “open up”. It just didn’t happen, as China turned into a “Leninist totalitarian system”; a greater threat to the USA; greater than the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany. A China with the “right to punish anyone in the planet”. An “opponent [to the USA] so powerful and intelligent”.

(3) This is a topic that needs “conversation”, says Gingrich, if you don’t want your grandchildren “speaking Chinese and obeying to Beijing”.

ULASAN BUKU TRUMP VS CHINA
Center Street, 2019

Selain apps, alat-alat tertentu turut dikatakan menjadi pengintip buat Parti Komunis China demi mencapai agenda perdana untuk menjadi kuasa besar dunia.

AS dan China sedang berperang. Kita sedang menyaksikannya, malah sedang berasakan bahangnya. Nah, COVID-19 senjata perang milik siapa kalau benar ia senjata?

China menjadi pengeluar produk AS dan Eropah. Bukan sekadar produk bernilai tinggi lagi eksklusif hinggalah kepada cenderamata mainan Mac D. Hubungan dagangan kedua belah pihak demokrasi Barat dengan komunis China begitu kukuh. Kemudian projek OBOR dilihat mengukuh perdagangan China malah memperkasa militari China.

Akhir kalam, Trump bagai menjadi watak unggul mewakili kuasa besar AS. Justeru banyak judul buku meletakkan Trump sebagai ‘titik konflik’ seperti ‘Trump vs. The media’, ‘Trump vs. Time Lincoln’ dan ‘Trump vs. Jesus’. Apa Trump memang kaki gaduh?

Talk about Russia, Russia, Russia!? Hmmm. I believe we should be (and should have been) more concerned about China, China, China. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) specifically. What happened in Shanghai recently? The lockdowns? Not good. Heartbreaking.

Newt Gingrich’s dedication page reads:

“To my grandchildren, Maggie and Robert, who will have a dangerous future if we don’t face the realities of the modern Chinese Communist Party’s tyrannical rule.”

Chapter 2 “Understanding China” gives some enlightening history of China.

In Newt Gingrich’s conclusion, he outlines “three requirements that must be included in an American strategy”.

This first one says it all:

“We must educate the public and have a national dialogue about the challenges we face with China. It should involve every American citizen. This must continue until at least 70% of the country agrees that success in meeting the challenge of the Communist Chinese dictatorship is the key to our national survival.”

I have many tags within this book, made notes in the margins, and underlined important points. I’m keeping this book for future reference.

I highly recommend this book.

An eye opening look at America's greatest foreign threat. The author makes the case for a national dialogue about the rise of China and the Chinese Communist Party. Some of the information in this book I already knew, but much was made known to me that hasn't been in the mainstream media. This book should be read by anyone with an interest in current events, politics, and geopolitics.

Most Americans have such an outdated, romanticized vision of China that it's almost laughable. The truth is far more insidious, as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich points out in his latest book. China is a totalitarian, repressive state, ruled with an iron fist by the Chinese Communist Party. With the CCP in charge, China has been modernizing its military by building up space, cyber capabilities, AI, quantum computing, and electromagnetic pulse technologies. Some of the aggressive strategies the CCP uses include stealing intellectual property, hacking, cheating on agreements, rigging the rules in China on foreign ownership of companies, forcing technology transfer, and using predatory pricing and financing to obliterate foreign competitors and drive them out of the market. Here's an example of the writing: "...China is engaged in an all-of-society competition with the United States in which virtually every Chinese company will support every other Chinese company, and no company can survive if it ignores the Chinese Communist Party's demands. China's communist system enables it to have an integrated effort on all fronts - using economic, diplomatic, military, political, and academic tactics - to advance its hegemonic ambitions at the expense of the United States. The South China Sea campaign, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Huawei telecommunications strategy are subordinate campaigns with a grand, long-term effort to establish global hegemony with the Chinese Communist Party at the helm." Absolutely chilling, all the more so because it's happening right now.

This is a timely though, I fear, unfortunately futile book about the dangers of a China-dominated international market. While using Trump's pro-American speeches as a bulwark of Western values and a point of comparison with Xi Jinping's startling rhetoric, Gingrich actually delves much deeper into the issues at hand, including providing a surprisingly thorough understanding of China's own history and ideological background (without stooping into territory any thinking leftist could rightly call "racist"). In fact, this book kind of sells itself short by presenting as a pro-Trump, anti-Chinese book for the MAGA crowd when, really, it has much more value. I'm not saying it isn't pro-Trump - indeed, it is refreshingly so - but its sometimes starry-eyed enthusiasm for '45' and its obviously-marketed cover make it out to be less important than it actually is.

This is a book about the China threat. It is well researched. Gingrich was part of the American government who supported the China engagement strategy back in Clinton days. Now he says he was wrong. China is determined to surpass America, but the American public still has no clue how bad the threat is. And, China is an authoritarian nondemocratic state.

Gingrich described the philosophy of China very well. For centuries, China was the centre of the universe; it is used to people from Japan and Korea using its language, borrowing its architecture, and giving tribute to it.

China has been increasing its power by building naval bases in the South China Sea, steals commercial and state secrets from America by hacking and sending its people to America, and bribing Americans. Confucius institutes were set up for spreading Chinese propaganda. China even invested in Africa and initiated the Belt and Road initiative, setting debt traps to take over assets such as ports all around the Pacific-Indian Oceans. And China is even ahead in space (landing on dark side of the moon), AI (facial recognition, Xinjiang concentration camps), and 5G technology!

Oh well. All big powers will develop its capabilities; America did many things to make sure its backyard is secure, overthrowing democratically elected Central and South American governments, did regime change in Iraq leading to the rise of ISIS, and generally ignoring Africa. America also spy on its own citizens and the world through the internet.

So what can be done? Persecute Chinese hackers and spies. This is about the only concrete example he gave; however, it can be inferred that what needs to be would be:
Further increase capabilities in Indo-Pacific. Start a trade war. Stop Chinese from learning American technology. Invest in Africa. Tell allies not to work with China. Tell belt and road countries not to build their infrastructure.

In other words, total cutting off China from the world. That is of course impossible. Just look at all the countries that joined China’s Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and countries that is going to use Huawei’s 5G.

Small countries like Singapore will have to work with both countries.

Well, the book is interesting while being a bit depressing. However, while it is full of information about China, and points out many points at which contact with them might be better dealt with, it is not all that clear that Gingrich has pointed out the methods whereby America may actually face its greatest threat. But I suppose that awareness is a good place to start.

This book is a must read for anyone who believes in the Judaeo/Christian version of individual freedom.
Few can doubt the credibility and honor of Newt Gingrich. With his lifetime experience in the power corridors of the world he has convincingly explained why we are now facing America’s greatest threat.
Most of the media today is focused on various Russian/Ukrainian scandals driven by the leaks and accusations of the deep state actors in the FBI, the CIA and the DOJ. Is this because of our ignorance for not understanding what Newt Gingrich is exposing, or is there something much more sinister in our poisoned media?
True information and facts will eventually come out and this latest book has identified the real cause of the war against freedom that is raging in the western world. Our civilization is once again under attack by the Middle Kingdom. This book should be a wake-up call to stop the “progressive” cancer before it is too late.
For those who would read the “cliff notes” before deciding to read the book I suggest start at page 251 and read the last appendix. This is a speech by Vice President Mike Pence where he states; “China is undermining support for [Trump], his agenda and US ideals… Trump’s policies are working and China wants a different president. China is meddling in America’s democracy….” The obvious question; is this why the DNC has not allowed the legitimate president to function for the last three years?! You will want to read the book and come to your own conclusions.
PS: As a Canadian, my takeaway from this book is to question why we have elected Trudeau despite his “admiration” for the way China rules. Is Justin Trudeau’s inexplicable re-election (despite his obvious hatred of traditional Canadian values) tied directly with the war between Donald Trump and China? Has our government become China’s puppet to influence the US?
Canadians reading this book will see many tactics used by China being implemented full strength in our country. Too bad we do not have freedom of the press to do investigative reporting like this. But we can hope that a Trump victory will lead to a turn around for our future politics.

Great book! I hardly ever say that.
First, I felt alarmed by what Gingrich was saying. I actually read the footnotes, which I hardly every do. Then I checked the facts online and through other means. They were true. Now, my alarm is fact based.
Second, I was amazed by the story of the mostly Muslim Uighur people being placed in a re-education camp in Xinjiang in western China. The government is experimenting with face-recognition cameras covering all public spaces. They require each mobile phone to contain an App that tracks their location, their web posts, and their messaging. They receive points for doing approved things and points are deducted for doing unapproved things. At a certain point for the ones with a low enough score, they are not allowed on public transportation nor to use other public services. At a certain point, they "volunteer" to go to the re-education camp. More than one million people are estimated to be in these camps.
Third, I was very concerned by the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. This is an international effort to build up trade routes and infrastructure within and between troubled countries in South America, Africa, and Middle east.
These are just three items that impacted me the most. The detailed descriptions and history of each of these plus many, many other things handled in the same thorough way, make this book great.

Politically speaking, Gingrich is a bit too establishment for my tastes, but I have to say that this is an excellent book that lays out the numerous challenges we face today from a resurgent China. Reading this during the Coronavirus pandemic (which was caused directly by the CCP's various lies regarding human infection and the cover-ups in Wuhan) only strengthens my belief that we need to start taking the PRC much more seriously.

Three great suggestions from Gingrich regarding possible actions that Trump could do during his Presidency: Establish a non-partisan website that informs the public and Congress on CCP/PRC activities, continue to bring manufacturing back from China to the United States, and building up a strong 5G infrastructure at home before the Chinese are able to do so in their country and abroad.

This is an important historical perspective on China's ascension on the world's economic stage. The American people need to be made aware of the PRC's intent for the world's future, and the actions taken since 1949 are transparent steps toward its ultimate goal of world domination. I knew some of the details Mr. Gingrich reported, but I felt like I was schooled by the end of the book. He provides an astute chronology of events with a dire assessment of the future. It's interesting that Newt acknowledges Henry Kissinger at the end of the book as a "remarkable friend and mentor for over 30 years." He was the Secretary of State under President Nixon whose administration is responsible for setting up China to succeed in such a detrimental way. A must read for people of every country!!

My rating would really be a 3.5 because the book really was informative about China and I learned a lot, but it just dragged on a little too long. The book was written from a pretty biased perspective which I should have expected, but that was a little annoying and distracting from the facts.

Most importantly, I don’t really see how this book was really about President Trump addressing issues with China. I feel like Trump’s actions were mentioned 10-15 times throughout the book, but its primary focus was China itself and its leadership being potentially harmful the US. As a result, a more appropriate title to describe the book would be The United States vs. China. Trump happened to be an occasional guest in the narrative.

Former Speaker of the House, and historian Newt Gingrich has written a comprehensive history of modern China and its challenges to the United States of America in the first two decades of the 21st Century. This is a must read for all military officers, all federal and state elected officials, all CEO’s and all-American citizens concerned with the survival of the United States.
Speaker Gingrich, an experienced national leader is an excellent communicator who lays out in clear and concise chapters, the breadth and depth of the Chinese Communist Party’s plans and actions to overtake and replace the United States as the world leader. While often referencing China expert Michael Pillsbury’s The Hundred-Year Marathon, and other professional references, the author gets down into the details concerning the various domains where China is aggressively moving to expand its territory (the South China Sea, and Space as examples), while creating a class of tribute -states through aggressively selling projects and financing to undeveloped states in Asia, Africa and Central America.
This book will explain how the United States has been a large contributor in China’s race to embrace modern technology, state of the art business models, and as a poacher of American intellectual property. Gingrich writes: “No one should be surprised at how hard it is going to be to recognize the scale and sophistication of the Chinese communist totalitarian threat …” “The challenge is so big that intelligent, serious people flinch from the effort.” (It is important to note that this book was recent before the COVID attack, and this Bio warfare is barely mentioned if at all.)

Without doubt, America and the west have been caught completely by surprise. Read this book before the primary season of the 2024 election ends. We need our very best now.

Trump vs. China is not a book about Trump. It is about China. I assume that the inclusion of “Trump” in the title was done in order to draw attention to the book, although I suspect that it will also have turned off Trump-haters who would regard it as not to be taken seriously. In fact, this book is an excellent discussion and analysis of the current political and economic position and long-term strategy of the Chinese Communist Party and why it poses an existential threat to the Western way of life characterised by freedom and the rule of law. It is detailed, including for example a 29-page chapter on the importance of 5G for China’s strategy aimed at gaining control of the internet and communication networks of the future, something you only get soundbites on from the mainstream media. I found fascinating the comparison between Chess and Go strategy and how China uses the Sun Tzu model of advancing its strategic and military interests through subtlety. Many people forget that Newt Gingrich began his career as a history professor, and this comes across in his writing, which is clear and accessible and with a measured tone.

I AM SO GLAD I PICKED THIS BOOK TO READ ON MY KINDLE AS I WAS WAITING FOR NEWT'S OTHER BOOK; I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT CHINA THAT I DID NOT REALIZE. I FEEL SO MUCH MORE INFORMED AND EMPOWERED IN MY THINKING AND WONDER WHAT IT WILL TAKE FOR THE MEDIA, THE POLICY MAKERS, THE BUSINESS LEADERS AND THOSE IN THE KNOW TO COME TO THEIR SENSES ABOUT CHINA AND THE THREAT THEY POSE TO THE USA AND THE FREE WORLD. 5G TECHNOLOY, COERCION OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE AND THE COMPANIES AND COUNTIRES THAT CHINA DOES BUSINESS WITH (INCLUDING HOLLYWOOD AND ON OUR COLLEGE CAMPUSES), AND THE STRATEGY THAT CHINA DISPLAYS TO SPREAD ITS INFLUENCE AND POWER THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, WHETHER IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA OR THROUGHOUT AFRICA OR INTO SPACE OR CYBERSPACE. USING UNFAIR TRADE POLICIES, STEALING TECHNOLOGY, OR SAYING ONE THING AND DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE HAS GIVEN CHINA A MASSIVE BOOST TO THEIR STANDING IN THE WORLD. MY INTEREST HAS BEEN PEAKED AND I MUST KNOW MORE ABOUT CHINA AND WHAT IT DOES EACH DAY AND HOW WE REACT TO IT.

If there's one takeaway from this book, it might be, beware of easy answers. Gingrich makes the point that China doesn't seek to win based on military strength or ideological superiority, but rather in good old-fashioned leftist practice, it seeks the more insiduous route through rules, regulations, and incremental, seemingly innocuous wins that extend its reach into the West, through cyberattacks, propaganda, distorted messages, and crippling debts, which let it seamlessly leave its footprint with nary a shot taken.

But Gingrich pulls no punches at leveling the finger at America and its government for how it has often dropped the ball. Not in the name of playing the blame game, but rather to show the path we must take to secure our country, ensure prosperity for future generations, and bolster Western Civilization's claim to victory over socialism.

This is an excellent book that gave very fair treatment to both sides without covering anything up. This is the closest I have ever been to agreeing with Trump on something, and that was China. Ironically, his position on conservation shows he doesn't really have comprehension of what he is going against China on. But stealing from creators and then using the money from the theft to undermine them is a great way to infertilize the creative environment where they make their money. A lot of films and books are speaking on how they are just mimicking high quality and then funding that to undermine it, and then wondering where it went. That's not mathematically competent whatsoever, and that is completely on China. The issue with the South China Sea is a problem too. Where all this aggression comes from is beyond me. It's just mental. Very good book.

An interesting text to pour over as the battle over the meaning of MAGA continues after the Trump ouster. Gingrich, Hannity, Bannon, and other personalities (Peter Thiel?) are focused on preserving a neoconservative core within this new rebranding of American conservativism (I.e. Russia and/or China are acceptable targets for what George Washington called "foreign entanglements"). Others in the MAGA camp prefer the old-school anti-intervention conservatism of Taft et al. This book lands firmly in the former camp. I hope for the sake of the future of our nation the neocon Trumpers are absolutely crushed and lose this struggle.

A very well-documented read with countless facts, all told in a pretty logical order. Though I was not at all surprised by this, I thought it was too partisan, inflammatory (starting with the title), and fear-mongering. This ultimately removed some credibility in my eyes. If Gingrich claims one of the the issues holding America back is division amongst its people, Trump VS. China perpetuates the matter. Despite this, I do not doubt the core messages of this read. They were just hard to find through all the political fluff.

I think the notion of a benign China is wearing a little thin these days. Especially as we see what the current repressive regime is up to within its own borders: surveillance, internet suppression, and a Big Brother social credit system. I'd be less worried about Chinese military and economic expansion into the wider world if the heart of this control-freak regime didn't seem so dark. It'll be interesting to see if this expansionism meets with Western resistance.

This book is a contrast between Trump‘s people first approach and Gen Sec Xi‘s country first rhetoric on their position to maintain and/or gain dominance. China is aiming to surpass the U.S as a Super power and it informs how China aims to do it and what the U.S plans (or lack thereof) to counter it. It‘s filled with historical nuggets which I love and I‘m glad I read it. Superficial observations, the book has some printing errors. I noticed occasional misspellings and double words.

The Chinese government has a detailed strategy to overtake the US as the world’s dominant power.
The Chinese want to do this by 2049, the centennial of China’s Communist revolution. By 2049, China will once again emerge as a global superpower.

While China has a grand strategy, the US risks being outmatched across the contested global and regional fronts to a more organized, meaner and smarter China.

Newt did a fine job with this book. I have read other books on China and this was a good update. I presented and update view of continuing behaviors that China engages in to fulfill their goals of global hegemony. The section on 5G technology was eye opening and very scary. The US needs to take this adversary very seriously and develop strategies to swarth China’s advances.

A must read about China

This is an excellent summary of the issues and challenges the US is facing with China. Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, the US is in a undeclared war with China. The recent Wuhan virus has made it clear that the US needs to scale back our economic reliance on China.
