This really seemed like my type of read, from the cover to the blurb, it looked really promising, but sadly it didn't work for me. And I wanted it to, so badly.

When I saw it on Netgalley, I went and added it, as well as the next two books in the series to my tbr immediately. I was that confident I'd like it.

What happened here was interesting enough to get me to finish reading, but not interesting enough to get me to care about the characters or the rest of their story.

We start with Victoria, who lives with a foster family because she lost hers in an accident. She starts receiving mysterious notes, and by following clues she ends up in another realm where she's supposed to participate in a selection of sorts, to become the bride of a vampire prince.

The trick is, they've met before, many times, but Victoria can't remember and everyone who does denies her answers for around 40% of the book. And even then they don't tell her everything.

Even though this is a pretty fast paced book, as well as on the shorter side, it still frustrated me to have to wait so long for some kind of explanation.

I get that she comes to their world with no memories, and that they need to ease her into it, but they don't have to withhold vital information for so long!!

On top of that, the whole romance was bland, I didn't feel any chemistry there and couldn't see why Victoria suddenly had a change of heart at the end. They were barely together, when did she have time to fall in love with him?

Maybe it would be more believable if she started regaining her missing memories, but as is I'm just not feeling it.

The writing felt like it was geared towards a younger audience, like on the younger side of YA. The book itself read almost like middle grade to me though, but I wouldn't recommend that kids read it due to some of the content.

The plot was okay, an idea was definitely there, it just wasn't executed the best. It could've been better if more time was taken to develop things instead of rushing everything.

The ending was anticlimactic, but not every book needs a cliffhanger so this isn't a fault. I do think that the place where the author chose to end it is a bit odd though.

Like, it feels as if it was a longer book originally and then chopped up into three parts. It doesn't feel like an organic ending, if that makes sense.

I'd recommend this to someone who doesn't normally read vampire books, or at least hasn't read that many of them, or is a younger teen. But if you're older than that and still want to give it a go, then be my guest. Just because it didn't end up being my thing doesn't mean it won't be yours.

*Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

The Selection but with a Vampire Prince. A gallant, horse riding Vampire Prince with an accent, in a big castle and an eccentric devious mother. What’s more to love???

I apparently have a thing for arranged/forced marriage trope. Also I keep telling myself I’m not into vampires/I’m so over vampires ……It’s 2022, I’m 36 and I’ve just realized I’ve been lying to myself.

And that is why, good friends, I devoured this mostly juvenile (but still good!) book in 2 days. And am, yes definitely, buying book 2. I’ve been in a reading slump, DNFing books left and right and knew, that if I go back to YA urban fantasy everything would be all better!!

I’m loving this story! What a great first book to an awesome series to come. I love stories like this about vampires. Tori the main character is full of surprises. And Dominic is so perfect. I might have a crush on him maybe haha. I can’t wait to see what happens next! Highly recommend this.

The Trade follows the story of a young girl named Victoria who willingly swims under a gate and into a different world because there was a note that told her to do it. The whole set up was pretty weak and I couldn't understand why Victoria was willing to do any of what she was being asked to do.

When she swims under the gate there is a man waiting for her that speaks as if he's known her for years (which he has) and tells her she has to enter some ceremony to pick the Prince as her husband. She's rather nonchalant about it all and really only has to be threatened a couple times to stay and say yes. It was half-hearted threatening and felt more playful than serious.

After that she pretty much goes with the flow. She finds out that she's been there before but they won't give her all the details, saying it'll keep her safe.

This girl, by the way, asks a lot of questions. I had mixed feelings. It was good that she was actively trying to find out the mysteries but on the other hand the conversations weren't spaced out enough and felt continuous. When she was with the prince that's all she did was ask questions. It was a bit too much.

Overall this wasn't the book for me.

Initial Thoughts: The writing voice is fine but the plot structure is not great. And I love that the main girl actually asks questions but don't bombard me with them, space it out.

4.5 Stars (rounded up to 5) I loved this story! One night Tori sees a handsome boy floating outside her window. At first she shrugs it off. Until the next day she receives a note that hints at some answers but ultimately creates more questions. Curious, Tori follows the note's instructions and is interested in meeting the writer. When she suddenly finds herself in a place called the Kingdom and realizes she has actually traveled to the future, Tori is thrusted into a rigged competition of sorts called the Trade.

Now for those of you who don't like futuristic books, don't worry, the Kingdom has been wiped out of all technology. This story does not read like dystopian but rather feels like a fantasy read. (Which is my cup of tea, give me fantasy all day.)

The Trade is fast paced and kept me intrigued through out the whole read. One thing I love about Leigh Walker's YA reads, is the way she keeps me hooked. I am excited to read the second book and find out more about the relationships between Tori, Prince Dom and Anthony. Walker also hinted at another competing kingdom and I am quite curious how that will come into play.

P.S. I loved the way this book ended. I like it when authors set up an ending that will have me interested and excited enough to read book 2, but not so angry with a cliffhanger that I am tempted to throw my book at the wall.

I went into The Trade with few expectations, only hoping to read a fairly entertaining vampire story. And while it was entertaining, and did feature vampires, it was … questionable?
I don’t know exactly how to describe my feelings about this book.
I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece or anything, just something on par with twilight (because I am trash). But nothing happened.
SPOILERS BELOW
The entire book was about Dominic and Victoria’s relationship, and even with that there was little development to be seen. Victoria went from ¨I can’t trust you¨ to ¨Have vampire babies with me¨ in no time at all. The reason the reader is supposed to be okay with this is because both characters have met before, and even though Victoria doesn’t remember their past encounters she still loves him. Not only that, but the whole book kept mentioning her forgotten memories, and how everything would just be so much easier if she hadn’t forgotten the Kingdom or Dominic. Yeah, obviously.
Overall, it was fine. The writing was good and it was entertaining enough to not make me feel like I was dragging through the book, but I can’t ignore the problems I found with it.

Received this book from the author

Time traveling. Vampires. Romance. Need I say more? The concept of this trilogy captured me from the second I read the synopsis. Vampires meet Outlander in this fresh take.

Victoria is a senior high school girl living with a foster family until she finds a note leading her to a lake. From there, she is led into a whole other world. A world in which apparently she’s been to for years; every six months in fact, but that she can’t remember a second of every visit. A place in which she is always forced to leave by whatever magic can bring her here. A place set in the future, but looks like medieval times, down to clothing and transportation. A place with vampires and a vampire prince who loves her.

Unique, right? She’s tossed into this world in which she has no memory of. Not of the people and friends who help her, of the environment or castle, of the king and queen, and definitely not of Prince Dominic, her love.

Through the book, the mystery of Victoria is slowly unfolded. Nothing to say why exactly she can do what she can, her blood, or her ability to travel through and forget everything, but of her life/lives there and how it’s nearly the same each time. She comes back forgetting her previous visit, the prince and his team is the only one who remembers her because Dominic took great strides to make it so. During the lifetime, Dominic’s mother, the power-hungry and crazy queen is getting worse and worse. Sometimes, has even tried to kill Victoria. So this time, Victoria is brought back to help set forth a plan that’s been in the making for a while. She comes into the castle under the guise of being chosen in The Trade to be his fiancee. The Trade is an annual event in which a girl is chosen to live inside the castle and serve the family. As the girls are all humans, you can imagine in what ways. This year, though the Trade involves the prince choosing a wife. At this time, she doesn’t know that for him, marrying her after all this time is what he wants. He’s been living the relationship for years and is ready for step 2. But for Victoria, he is a complete stranger.

As a result, they do form a quick but cute relationship. Dominic is all-in from the beginning, so it’s just for her side. But they form a comradeship and friendship fast, as he is the one with the answers, and willing to keep her safe. Through the course of the book, conversations turn into kisses and Victoria falls back into love with him.

The only thing that bothered me about this book was the Trade scene. I swore I was reading The Hunger Games. Girls who sacrifice themselves for the royal family. To be willing to go up on the stage is “brave” and “a sacrifice”. In turn, the townspeople receive food and grains and stuff they need as a thank you. Some of the lines in this scene were too similar for my liking. Unfortunately this was at the beginning of the book too, so it put a bad taste in my mouth.

After that scene, once she entered into the castle, the book took off for the better. It turned around to be a great read! One filled with just enough mystery to keep me wondering and questioning; enough fear to feel for Victoria as she navigates life with the queen; and enough romance to make a lovely read. And of course, vampires! We find out more about Victoria’s past too, toward the end.

Victoria’s personality doesn’t necessarily stand out to me, but I also don’t dislike her. As a character, I actually just have no feelings towards her. Dominic on the other hand, is quite the gentleman. I like him. He’s kind, considerate, and genuine. He’s a great YA character in my opinion. This book even has strong supporting characters: friends who help Dominic and Victoria, mean feeder girls, and a scary-as-hell queen.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of this trilogy has in stock and how it’ll all play out.

A very good start to a new series! I loved the twist where the girl didn’t automatically fall in love with the vampire first too!

Tori is all alone, her mother and sister died in car crash and now she is living in foster care. Everyday is a struggle and she never quite fits in. Then one night she sees a boy outside her window, followed by a mysterious letter left for her. Tori must decide to follow the clues and she what’s going on or leave it and go on with life as she knows.

The characters are quite full and vivid. I especially like Anthony’s quick wit and banter. Tori, at first for me, was a bit limp but as the book progressed I saw her maturing and starting to fight back. Dominic is a wonderful tortured soul but I feel that he starts to come into his own as it picks up. These characters have massive promise to rise up and grow to become a solid a formidable team.

There is a smattering of other characters we get to know and they are just as “human” as the MCs. The world building is lovely-the way that the author has managed to fit a worm hole in there and make it believable is very impressive. All the questions that Tori wants answers to are the same questions we have and it’s so fun to learn the answers.

I look forward to reading the next instalment very much. As I said before it is a brilliant start and holds much promise for the future!

It's no secret that I love Leigh Walker's writing. The Vampire Royals series made me fall in love with her romances between vampire princes and witty and sweet human girls. There is always plenty of drama and suspense to go around too, which keeps me turning the pages of her books and finishing them way too soon.

When I heard she was writing a new series, I was of course overjoyed, and then even more excited to hear it would again feature a vampire prince and a human girl, as well as time travel! Sounds exciting, right?! I think this first book in the trilogy, The Trade, did a good job of setting up the overall storyline of the series. We learn along with the main character Tori that she has time traveled multiple times into the Kingdom, and that she has a deep connection to the vampire prince, Dominic Allard. His mother is a piece of work, though, and she has nasty ambitions that could change the way things have been done in the kingdom for the worse.

This was definitely different from Walker's last series in that Tori does not immediately fall for the prince, although I am sad to say we didn't see as much of the prince as I would have wanted. We got to meet all the main characters and had several interactions between them and Tori, but I wanted MORE. More Dominic, more Tori and Dominic, more information about Anthony and his friendship with Tori. Which is why I am glad this is a series, and I can't complain too much because I know it will get more intense from here.

Also, I love how Walker ends her books. Sure, it will be painful to wait for the next one, but it's not an abrupt cliffhanger ending that has me furious. Instead, it points in the direction the story is going and gives me something to think about!

I'm a huge fan of Leigh Walker's writing! I read this series thinking it was a follow-up to the Vampire Royals series. I was a little disappointed that this wasn't the case, but nevertheless read on!

After reading The Vampire Royals I found the setting to be a little too similar to find enjoyable a second time around, although I did really appreciate the time traveling component as well as the mystery surrounding Victoria's memory loss every time she comes through the time-portal.

Beyond that, I found Dominic and Victoria little dull. I found myself frustrated with Tori because she doesn't remember the man she is betrothed to, however within 2 weeks she is in love with him (even though he was a stranger).

Nonetheless, I appreciate the humor that Anthony brought to the table as well as the savageness that the Queen brought to the table. I also really appreciated unraveling the mystery that surrounds Tori's family!

#1 The Trade ★★★★☆
#2 The Pact ★★★☆☆
#3 The Claim ★★★☆☆

I LOVED this book! Admittedly, in the beginning I contemplated dropping the series as it came off too adolescent and contemporary for my tastes. I'm glad I didn't though, because the story perks up about 11% or so of the way in, and was so enjoyable to lose myself in. This has been one of the most unique vampire stories I've ever read, plot-wise and through worldbuilding.

“You ask if it’s me every bloody time, then you get this look on your face when I tell you no. Like you dodged a bullet. Like I’m so homely you can’t bear it!” “I don’t think… I don’t think you’re homely.” “Well, I know that.” He pointed to himself, from his red hair to his boots. “Anyone would be lucky to get a piece of this.”

This is a time-travel period romance with VAMPIRES. Let that sink in for a moment, er...metaphorically speaking. I have a feeling that the beginning of the book was full of so much bleh so that the world and circumstances on the other side of the gate shone brightly - similarly to what J.K. Rowling did with the 4 Privet Drive vs Hogwarts. Brilliant, really. With vampires, I've come to expect the same kind of modern gothic-ish paranormal romance vibe, so it was a huge surprise when the MC, Victoria, travels in time and ends up in a medieval-esque type world with horseback riding, castles, gowns, gardens, oil lamps, etc. Except it's STEAMPUNK 'cause reasons. There are also DYSTOPIAN elements 'cause humans suck (ha-ha-ha). Tense VAMPIRE/HUMAN POLITICS. A several-millennia-old EVIL QUEEN. Not to mention hunky vampire, His Royal Highness Prince Dominic, asking for her hand in everlasting marriage. The caveat? She's been here before, many times before, and remembers nothing. Oh and she has secret powers that are kind of dangerous for everyone. Just, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Also, although she hails from New Jersey, when she travels she somehow ends up somewhere in Great Britain. The logistics are a bit strange for me, but I'm not complaining because ACCENTS.

He arched an eyebrow, waiting for me to say it out loud. “A vampire.” The word tasted funny on my lips. We stared at each other for a moment. Dominic shrugged. “And you’re a witch.” “I beg your pardon?” He leaned closer, his scent wafting over me, something spicy, earthy, and delicious. “I said if I’m a vampire, then you’re a witch.”

I fell in love with the cast of characters instantly. While the worldbuilding is so amazing, the cast of characters really made this read fun, with diverse personalities full of life (Will the puns ever stop??). Also the humor, let's not forget the humor. This particular kind of humor and set-up is my brand. I am particularly loving Anthony, his antics are HILARIOUS, I wish he were my best friend. Half of my highlights are of him, so it's safe to say he's my favorite. Mistress Olivia reminds me so much of Mrs. Potts from Beauty and the Beast, so perfectly grandmotherly. The MC Victoria aka Tori, while a bit immature at times, is really quite wonderfully rounded and fiery in the best of ways, especially for an 18 year old. Dominic makes me lustful, he's so yum, except kind of...annoying. Annoying in the sense that, he withholds information AND IT DRIVES ME CRAZY. Definitely overprotective, so while it's annoying because I'm IMPATIENT, it's also endearing. The side characters and villains are all nicely done as well, complimenting our main cast. Seriously, nicely done.

“Alexandra called me a puff pastry on legs.” I frowned. “She made it hard to sympathize!” He laughed. “Very well, but I hope the queen understands. Dom’s with her now. He finished with the council meeting, and she intercepted him before he could come here. Hence you have me—your redheaded best friend, otherwise known as your muscular, devastatingly handsome, witty vampire bodyguard—at your service for the rest of the afternoon.” I blinked at him. “Your ego knows no bounds.” “The ladies love a good ego.” He winked at me.

The only reason I rated this 4/5 stars is because... there are a few elements that come off as a bit too adolescent for me. With that said it's not too bad, I've had minimal nose wrinklage, though I do wish Tori were a bit more grown up. It is definitely mildly, tolerably annoying, as opposed to other books I've read that are really quite immature, whiny, and absolutely awful to read, you know the ones I'm talking about. The worst of it is at the very beginning of the book, so if you can get past that, you're golden. While I'm on the topic, I hope this was purposeful and leaves room for character growth, she really deserves it.

Wonderful read, can't wait for the next book!

Content Warnings for loss of loved one, foster system, anxiety attacks, fainting, allusions to self harm, abduction scenarios, mild gore, mild rape scenarios, forced marriage, slavery, racism, animal cruelty, narcissistic parental figures, cultish scenarios, allusions to violence, memory loss, tortured prisoner scenarios, and tense family and marriage interactions. ♡

2.5⭐ | Promising Premise, but Falls Short in Execution

The Eternal Trade by Leigh Walker had all the makings of a compelling read—a vampire kingdom, time travel, a mysterious prince, and a reluctant heroine thrust into a dangerous world. Unfortunately, while the concept was intriguing, the execution left much to be desired, and I ultimately found myself unable to fully connect with the story.

The book opens with Victoria Edwards, a high school senior living in foster care after a devastating loss. When mysterious notes and a floating boy outside her window lead her to a midnight encounter, she’s whisked away to a vampire-ruled kingdom in the year 3130. What follows is her reluctant participation in “The Trade,” a ritual that sees young women offered to the royals in exchange for resources, with Victoria chosen by Prince Dominic himself.

The premise is undeniably intriguing, and I was curious to see how the time travel, memory loss, and vampire politics would play out. However, the story struggled to deliver on its potential.

Victoria, as the main character, felt underdeveloped. While her confusion and frustration at being thrust into this world were understandable, her lack of agency and growth made it difficult to root for her. Prince Dominic, while charming on paper, lacked the complexity needed to carry the romantic arc. Their connection felt rushed and lacked the emotional depth to make the romance believable.

The pacing was another challenge. While the book moved quickly, it often felt like it was rushing through key moments without giving them the weight they deserved. Vital information was withheld for far too long, leaving me more frustrated than intrigued. The world-building, while full of potential, felt surface-level, with the vampire kingdom and its rules never fully explored.

The writing style felt geared towards a younger audience, leaning into a tone that might resonate better with younger YA readers. However, some of the content felt at odds with that audience, creating an odd mismatch.

While I appreciate the originality of the concept and the attempt to blend time travel and vampire lore, the story lacked the depth and polish needed to truly shine. The ending, while not a cliffhanger, felt abrupt—more like a longer story was cut into parts rather than a natural stopping point.

Who this might work for:

✨ Readers new to vampire-themed books
✨ Younger teens looking for a light paranormal read

Ultimately, while the book didn’t work for me, I can see its appeal for a specific audience. If you enjoy fast-paced paranormal stories with a unique twist, The Eternal Trade might be worth checking out.

Following the devastating loss of her mother and sister in an accident, high school senior Victoria Edwards has been living in foster care. One night, she’s disconcerted to see a boy floating outside her window. The next morning she receives a letter with instructions telling her to wade into a nearby stream at midnight, swim under the fence and that he’ll be waiting for her on the other side. “You have to come through. The things you’ve lost will come back to you.”

Intrigued in spite of herself, Victoria ventures into the unknown, only to find herself slap bang in the middle of a Kingdom ruled by vampires in the year 3130 no less. The boy outside her window is Prince Dominic. She barely has time to recover from her shock, when she’s forced to enter The Trade, a ritual in which young maidens are offered as sacrifices to the Royals in return for crops. This year Prince Dominic will choose a bride from the sacrifices and he chooses Tori.

Upon entering the Palace however, Tori uncovers deceit and treachery and must keep her wits about her as she struggles to remember a past she has no memory of.

The Trade is the first instalment of the Vampire Kingdom trilogy and was my first introduction to the author. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in the premise of the story. The idea of time travel/memory loss in a world where vampires rule and humans are kept as blood slaves. Tori’s blood being ‘different’ playing a crucial factor.

The characters were interesting, appealing and relatable. Initially Tori is understandably out of her depth but as she as comes to learn more about her past, we see glimpses of her strength and resolve. I loved the interaction between her and Anthony. Dominic is charming and willing to do anything to protect Tori. Queen Danica is a particularly self centred, power hungry chilling antagonist.

All in all this was a fast paced, action packed book with enough mystery, twists and turns to ensnare the reader into picking up the next instalment. Ideal for YA fans of fantasy, time travel, vampires.

What is better than a love story between a Vampire prince and a human girl?! Nothing!! This was a wonderful story filled with rich characters, a wonderful and complex world and a plot to keep any reader invested.

If I had to describe this book with just words is would be: sweet, sassy, witty, drama, action and mystery/suspense! This book has it all and it is only book one in a series! I cannot wait to read the rest I was utterly addicted. Being that this is book one, it is heavy on the introduction to the characters, world and life that both the main characters and the readers now live. I loved the secondary characters as much as the main ones and the dialogue was such fun. I could not get enough of the time travel/supernatural/human story and recommend this story to all YA lovers.
Get ready of an adventure with this series and if you hate cliffhangers you might want to wait for all the books before you read. This one ended in one that just about had me throwing my Kindle. Lucky I can dive right into book two. Highly recommended. I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review.

I really did enjoy this book, it was entertaining, I loved the premise and ideas in it, I definitely would like to read the rest in the series. I found Tori and all the rest of the characters very well done and it kept me reading late into the night (which I really like haha). I just had a couple problems with it (spoilers) 1. I don’t know how believable it is that a girl would go into the middle of a lake at midnight and swim under a gate. I had such a hard time with that and kept having to remind myself it’s just fiction and to let it go! I just couldn’t lol. I feel like no one would actually do that. And 2.) I felt like things took/are taking too long to develop. I get its a series, but I’m not a fan of really long series (it’s a personal thing I guess) and at this rate, I feel like there are going to have to be a lot of books to get to the bottom of everything...if they are all like this.

Other than that, well done! I really enjoyed it and I’m excited for the rest in the series. I just need to get over the gate in the lake!

Time Traveling and Vampires

This is the first book to contain both of my favorite genres: time travel and vampires. I found the book to be almost a preview or stage setter. It ended before I was ready for it to be over. I enjoyed the characters and the premise for the story. The main story conflict was just getting fleshed out when the book ended so I'm excited to read the next book in the series. The main character's reactions to the events unfolding in her life I felt were at times barely believable but it didn't bother me enough to not finish reading. I felt the book overall was well written and interesting enough to keep me reading straight through until the end. My only request would be for the author never to use the reference to an alpha male and I would be happy. It's my new personal pet peeve and should only be used in erotica novels which thankfully this book is not. It is romantic and clean and I can't wait to see how the relationships develop.

ONE ENTHRALLING EXPERIENCE!!!
Oh my gosh! Talk about between a rock and dust. Yeah, thats not a mistake. Jumping head first into peril and finding out your barely hanging on. A rollercoaster ride of activities and events brings a full range of emotions swirling bringing everything into play front and center. Struggling through all the trials and tribulations, twists and turns, along with a few glitches and near misses bring this bad boy bursting alive beautifully. All the drama, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense increase steadily as tension spirals as the tale unfolds. The characters are complex, believable with depth and individualities that pull this little jewel together flawlessly. The scenes are so vividly described it paints one amazing backdrop.

This was the most unsatisfactory ending I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t believe it was over before anything really happened. It was like a few chapters of a book and you have to get the next book to read the other chapters. Ugh.
That being said the story obviously was intriguing. A girl goes through time to the unfamiliar world where vampires are real and apparently she’s been there many times before, but every time she leaves her memory is erased. That’s got to be frustrating for the friends she makes in that world to have to retell her everything she’s should already know each time she crosses over. We as the reader are also left in the dark (too long for my liking.)
Do I want to read the next book? Probably.

I got a copy of this book

I loved reading this book from start. I was hooked from the start.

Can’t wait for book 2. I want to see how Victoria will defeat the vampire queen with Prince Dominic by her side.

This book is set in the future in the 3000s where vampires rule and humans are treated as blood slaves. Victoria enters in this time from a mysterious letter she received. She meets Anthony, Mistress Olivia and Prince Dominic, all vampires. She learns that her blood is poisonous to vampires and that she has been to this time a few times but Victoria never remembers. She also learns some startling truth about her sister and mother. She also develops feelings for Dominic.

I'm on the edge of my seat!

One can only imagine my excitement when I received an email from Leigh Walker that said she was releasing her new book early! I dove in (no pun intended since Victoria had five to get to this new world) and I have loved every single page. The only negative component that I could find is that this story was not long enough! Things are getting mighty crazy and I am loving it! Bombshell after bombshell kept on coming which made it near impossible to put this book down. I am holding out that this divine author will release book two early.
