Graduated in 1962 from the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), master of the University of Brasilia (UnB) and PhD in Economics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), she is better known in Spanish-speaking America than in Brazil itself, where it has only two books published.
Alongside intellectuals such as Ruy Mauro Marini, André Gunder Frank and Theotonio dos Santos, she formulated Dependency Theory, a critical, non-dogmatic Marxist interpretation of the processes of reproduction of underdevelopment on the periphery of capitalism.
