I'm genuinely so surprised that I hadn't heard of Susanna Craig before requesting this title on netgalley. She ticks all of my historical romance boxes. I loved the couple in this story - an English noble woman fleeing a brother attempting to marry her off to an unsavoury Lord, and an Irish lawyer/rebel in search of a governess for his unruly younger sisters. I particularly enjoyed that despite their internal strife and very real struggles this was not a story about two people at war with one another, constantly miscommunication and overreacting. Yes they have secrets but they also have sympathy and as they grow to know and care for on another I couldn't help but smile. I also always enjoy a little but of humour in my historical romance and the precocious younger siblings and large family provide exactly that. Perfect for fans of Tessa Dare!

Rosamund Gorse is at Kilready in Ireland with her brother Charles, Viscount Setterby while he is visiting a friend from school, the Earl of Dashfort. But when she thinks his children have played a trick on her and she runs into the earl in the hall, she realizes that her brother is planning on selling her to the earl!! Upset and angry, Rosamund runs away determined to thwart Charles, she plans to travel to Dublin and find a lawyer to help her challenge his guardianship.

Paris Burke has had a little too much to drink when Rosamund runs into him – she tells him she is looking for a lawyer – Paris is a lawyer – and he assumes she is the governess he planned to hire to take care of his younger sisters. With no money and nowhere to go, Rosamund doesn’t correct his assumption and plans to hide out until she comes of age in a few weeks. When they arrive at his house, the his family’s home, the ordeal of running away and the long walk catches up with her and she faints.

Paris is concerned and takes care of her, worried that she took ill in his care. That dredges up memories of another time he failed to take care of someone in his care. But Rosamund is fine, she is just exhausted from the walk from Kilready. She wakes the next day embarrassed and immediately begins working with the girls, Bellis & Daphne.

Paris is attracted to Rosamund and the feeling is returned, but he doesn’t feel worthy of her. He takes a case involving a boy from Kilready and hopes that he can begin atoning for what he considers a great failure. But when Rosamund learns that he was at Kilready, she is sure her brother will find her and she bolts, not realizing the girls are in hot pursuit or that Paris has discovered her secret and wants to help her.

I thought this was a good story, well written with a lot of deep seated emotion and very likable characters. The love scenes were very mild and stayed true to the characters, the villains were dealt with and our tortured hero finds comfort and begins to heal. I loved catching up with his elder sisters Camilla and Erica, as well as their husbands and the epilogue in this book was very sweet. This is the third book in the series and can easily be read as a standalone. I enjoyed this story and would be happy to recommend it.

The Lady’s Deception
Susanna Craig

The Lady’s Deception by Susanna Craig is book three in her Rogues and Rebels series. Though part of a series, this novel reads as a standalone. This is a romance that hits all the right notes.

Paris Burke is Dublin’s most charismatic barrister. He’s looking after his two youngest sisters while his parents are away. He hires Rosamund Gorse as the girls’, Daphne and Bellis, ages ten and eight, governess without asking the pertinent questions.

Rosamund Gorse is hiding from her unscrupulous brother, Charles, who is determined to sell her to Lord Dashfort, a scoundrel of the highest order. She accepts the position as governess to Paris’ sisters, though she knows she shouldn’t have let him believe she was a legitimate candidate for job.

Rosamund and Paris find themselves bonding, even though she’s an English miss and he’s an Irish rebel. Will they overcome their personal issues and fully embrace the romance they’ve begun, however unwittingly.

Ms. Craig has presented us with a well-written romance. The characters are relatable and have full backstories to complete their development. The plot held my attention from beginning to end. The author also gives historical details that enhance the story. I rate The Lady’s Deception 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all readers of romance, especially historical romance.

My thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

I read very little romance, perhaps a couple of books every year. But I took note of this one in Jean of Bookishthought's underhyped books video. And then I fell promptly ill and after sleeping all day, couldn't sleep at night. So instead, I read this book and it was perfect for that strange nocturnal limbo. I struggle to rate romance novels, as it's such a specific genre, but based on the enjoyment level, this was a solid four. Really lovely and entirely non-toxic, despite the brooding male lead.

My review

Will two persons who are running away, find a path to one another.

I do love this series, why after reading The Companion’s Secret, I preordered without even a though the next installment to come.
It is not often I have read an historical romance with Ireland as a background.
The change of scene and the different setting is like a breath of fresh air.

At first I was not sure if I liked Paris Burke, he was so filled with anger in the first book. Then this anger was a masquerade to hide his own guilt. He has an immense love for his family but he feels like his past actions had created a chasm between them and himself. He can’t shake of his mind the idea, he was the one whom brought tragedy among his kin. Since he can’t forgive himself and avoid them whenever possible.
Thus how he finds himself in charge of the custody of his younger sisters, when he didn’t followed his parents to England.
By his changes of customer base, he tries in his own way to make amends for his past errors. Still, his remorses prevent him from involving himself in his siblings education, hence his need for a governess.
Rosamund, despite her sheltered upbringing, is no pining miss. Even when she finds herself in dire circumstances, she makes things do. She arranges her tales in order to adapt to her new environment. She is smart and resourceful, using her surrounding to accommodate to her new “occupation”. By employing her cleverness and friendliness wisely, she easily won her new charges unwavering affection.
Paris’ sisters are two adorable girls, creative and full of mischief. With the fur ball Eileen, they are messengers of happy moments.
In spite of the agitated background, it was no sad tale, even the supposed vilains are not so bad, mostly ill-advised people. It is a story about forgiveness and letting the past and its old bitterness go to be able to enjoy a brighter future.
I loved this narrative which focused on the life of a commoner, it. As nice to get an insight of this period of history, as Irish people have a long road ahead of them before being seen as equal as English.
Mrs Craig did it again, she crafted a wonderful story which will make you shed a tear, smile, laugh and swoon a bit with Paris, Rosamund, Bell, Daphne and Eileen.
5 stars.

Just a remark about the cover, it conveys the idea of a gothic story, which it is not.

I was granted an advance copy through Netgalley by the publisher Kensington. I had previously preordered my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Wow, what a great book this was to read, Susanna Craig did a fabulous job of writing Paris and Rosamund's story. One can tell a lot of research went into it and I found it so interesting learning more about the United Irishmen.

Paris is a barrister with a lot of personal angst and as we learn the cause of it, we also watch him start to slowly begin to forgive himself with the help of Rosamund and his big family. Rosamund has her own personal problems, one which leads her to run away from her home and ends up working as a governess to Paris' two youngest sisters. There is never a dull moment and I just adored Daphne and Bell, as well as their kitten which had me giggling at many scenes:) I enjoyed the slow burn between Paris and Rosamund, how their relationship evolves and how they help each other.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Paris Burke, a barrister, a young man with some Irish blood, takes part in a failed Irish rebellion and feels guilty about the suffering that resulted from it, including for a member of his own family. Paris is not a titled lord, which was a very nice change, and he doesn't live in a mansion. As a matter of fact, they aren a little pressed for space and don't have very many servants. One day near his law office, he mistakes a young woman for the governess he is to interview for his two young and precocious sisters (Daphne and Bellis, known as Bell).

Rosamund is on the run from her brother, her only living relative, who intends for her to marry a man she finds abhorrent. From what she overhears, it is evident that her consent will be forced if needed. She has made it to the Four Courts, intending to seek out a lawyer, when she runs into Paris Burke - who mistakes her for the governess. Rosamund, who is footsore, hungry and has only the clothes on her back, recognizes a lifeline when she sees one. She affirms that she is indeed the governess sent to teach his two sisters. Paris is surprised at this as he is expecting to only interview her, but accepts her at her word. Fortunately. (I was holding my breath for her before she met Paris, since she was alone at dusk in a strange place, friendless and had no money.)

This is an interesting, exciting, and complex story with multiple plot threads that are all woven to a satisfying conclusion. I particularly enjoyed the last few chapters when the Burke family all came together.

A note for other readers: If while reading this book, you desire more information on the historical background, I highly recommend reading the Wikipedia article about the Acts of Union 1800, which also gives information on the Irish rebellion of 1798. I found it made the book - and Paris - much easier to understand and gave me a deeper appreciation of the story. 4 1/2 stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for this advance reading copy. This is my honest opinion.

In this third book in Susanna Craig’s Rogues and Rebels series, it’s the eldest of the Burke family, barrister Paris, who meets his match. Still suffering guilt over the consequences his participation in the failed 1798 Irish Rebellion brought down on his friends and family, he’s been drinking when he meets a young woman he incorrectly assumes is the new governess sent to look after his sisters.

In the midst of a panicked flight from a forced marriage, Rosamund Gorse seizes on the opportunity offered by Paris Burke’s mistake. He might even be able, with his knowledge of the law, help her escape her brother’s clutches, but before she gets up the courage to ask him, he disappears on a case. Things go wrong when she discovers he’s travelled to the location she just fled from and jumps to conclusions.

Susanna Craig always puts a great deal of historical detail in her books, and you really get a strong flavour of the time period from the little details which really add up to create a coherent picture of how people really lived. Paris suffers a real crisis of conscience over falling in love with an Englishwoman, enough that when he leaves Dublin to visit a small rural town and they think he’s English that I actually laughed. He definitely had to think about his prejudices when the tables were turned, same as Rosamund had to reconsider her privileged life when she had to fall back on her own wits for survival.

Five stars for an excellent addition to one of my favorite series. If you haven’t read Susanna Craig yet, and you love historical romance, you really should pick these up. You’ll have a new fave author in no time!

An unusual meeting is just the first step!

First impressions of Paris Burke? He's harassed to the point of being obtuse. He's late for an appointment. Not good for a supposedly on-the-ball solicitor. So focused is he on problems of the home front that when a young woman approaches him at King’s Inns Quay he assumes, because she's looking for a lawyer, she's the governess he's been sent to organize his sisters' time.
Mind you, the fact that Miss Gorse fainted when they reached his home should have been something of an alarm bell. And what governess would approach a perspective employer on a dockside?
Paris is a member of the radical organization, Society of United Irishmen. The recent rebellion had left a trail of heartache for him. This has been part of his distraction.
So for Paris, "His absolute and only concern was whether Miss Gorse was a suitable governess for his sisters."
Rosamund Gorse has fled a haunted castle and the demands of a man her half brother has demanded she wed. She's searching for a lawyer to make some sense of her brother's guardianship and what that entails. Thus the speaking at cross purposes when she and Paris first meet. Fainting wasn't high on Rosamund's list of how to make an impression or garner assistance either. But she's desperate and needs to hide whilst figuring out her next move.
I quite liked the intrepid Miss Gorse even if she does seem to skirt around convention. Needs must, and let's face it, attraction between the two main characters becomes rather unavoidable.
I enjoyed Paris' young sisters Daphne and Bellis and delighted in all the adventures where the kitten Eileen is front and center.
Paris Burke Is wryly clever, with a well developed sense of humor when he allows it to show, but he's also a lost man seeking absolution.
Is he Dublin's most charismatic bachelor? That he was a skilled lawyer particularly in the courtroom seems evident. Does the equate to being labeled a 'charismatic bachelor?' Not as far as I could see.
His and Rosamund's romancing advances at a racy pace, on par with everything else that's going on.
Heaps of action and subplots makes this story a breezy, pleasant read.

When she learns of her brother's plan to marry her off to a scoundrel of a man more than twice her age, Rosamund Gorse flees the dreary Irish castle she and her brother were visiting in the dead of night. When she runs into Mr. Paris Burke on a Dublin quay, he mistakes her for the governess candidate he's meant to be meeting. Mr. Burke is desperate for a governess for his two young sisters and Rosamund, just as desperate, does not correct him. But Paris is clever and easy to talk to, not to mention troubled by his past failures, and soon Rosamund will share anything with him to take away some of his tension. But the fear of being found by her brother remains and as Rosamund and Paris form a tenuous bond, it seems he may be just the helpmate she needs, and vice versa.

I was a little unsure of Paris at first given his acute, palpable anger, but once I learned it stemmed from guilt I was just sorry for him suffering that way. Luckily his sister set him straight and Rosamund brought him back to life. I really enjoyed their story and found Paris to be surprisingly romantic. I couldn't put this book down and hope for more from the Burke family.

Desperate to find a governess for the two young sisters left in his care, he jumps at the hope that the young English gentlewoman he stumbles into late on a Dublin street is the woman arranged to fill the position.

Rosamund feels torn about her deception. She feels guilty and apprehensive about deceiving the family but she cannot risk her brother discovering her whereabouts and marrying her off to a scoundrel who has already lost a wife to mysterious circumstances.

But the more time she and Paris spend in one another's company, the greater the risk. Both to her heart and her secret.
___________________________

The Lady's Deception is the third book in Susanna Craig's Rogues and Rebels series. I have not read the two previous books in the series, and perhaps that would have inhanced my reading of this book, but I was not very impressed. It had a very strong start, but then it started falling into trope pitfalls that just made it seem a bit cheesy and clunky for me.

I thought the book had quite the strong start, but once Rosamund and Paris met, the quality went down a bit for me. I still enjoyed it, but I wasn't hooked.

If I had to pick a favorite aspect of the book, it would likely be Paris' sisters. Both the younger and the older sisters, I found their sass and/or antics to be amusing.

My biggest complaint is that all the tension from earlier in the book was undermined, in my opinion, by the very simple resolution. It felt quite anti-climatic, like they didn't really overcome anything. If everything is resolved so easily, was there really that much at stake to begin with?

This book can serve as a stand alone, not reading the first two in the series hindered my understanding in no way. But I think reading the first two could quite possibly add to your enjoyment of the book, as they focus on the older two of Paris' sisters, who also feature in this book. If you're a fan of histroical romances, this could be the book for you. But I'm not sure that I will continue with the series.

The Lady’s Deception by Susanna Craig
Rogues & Rebels #3

When Paige Burke overhears her half-brother’s plot to marry her off to someone she is not interested in she flees with the plan of finding a lawyer to find out what her rights are. Stumbling across barrister Paris Burke when she finally reaches town she realizes that he has misunderstood her purpose, thought she was there to be the new governess and headed home with him to do her best with his two younger sisters. She is still hopeful she can find a way to elude her brother and the man he has in mind for her but in the meantime hunkers down and fits in as she can in Burke’s home. This story has precocious young girls, a kitten in need, a barrister trying to make amends, a dastardly brother, smugglers, a “ghost”, a look into the lives of those in the previous books of the series, a bit of history and a lovely romance. This story with a HEA for Paris and Rosamund was an enjoyable way for me to escape to a different time and place instead of dealing with the not so wonderful news and weather outside.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington – Lyrical Press for the ARC – this is my honest review.

This is the third book in the series & a third Burke sibling has their story, I look forward to the rest of the siblings finding love especially Galen. This was my least favourite of the series. It was well written with characters of depth. Whilst I liked both Paris & Rosamund I didn’t love them & found their relationship was a little lacking in chemistry but did like the slow burn romance. I did love Daphne & Bell though That said I was still captivated & read it in under a day
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Each story that I read by this wonderful author only makes me anxious to read more!
Rosamund Gorse was desperate. She would not be sold by her brother to that man and her only thought was to get away and find someone to help her, possibly a lawyer?
Good fortune smiled down on her when she met Paris Burke (don't you just love that name? sigh). Practically crossing in front of his path, it seemed fate was at work. He was making his way to his next appointment to a lady who was to help him find a governess for his two young sisters and he mistakenly took her for the candidate!
I loved every bit of this book. The characters of Paris and Rosamund had me holding my breath to see what would happen. Paris, an Irishman, with his wounded soul who needed find peace and forgiveness within himself. The sisters, Daphne and Bell where delightful and impish and won my heart and of course their precious kitten.
But of course, Paris does not know her secret but it will come out and you will just have to read to find out what happens!
Perfect. That is all I can say!

A really enjoyable Historical romance novel. It's well written, has a slow burn romance and an interesting back-story set in Ireland. It has good character development and I really liked both Rosamund and Paris.

Our English heroine flees the isolated Irish home/spooky castle belonging to her brother's friend, an Earl, to avoid a forced marriage to him. She makes her way to Dublin after leaving during the night and accidentally/on purpose finds herself being hired as a governess to the younger sisters of a barrister. The historical details are well written and there's a back story full of drama involving smuggling. The children add some lighthearted moments to the story.

I look forward to reading this author's back list and recommend this story. My thanks go to NetGalley and Lyrical Press for the e-ARC in return for my honest opinion.

English countess Rosamund Gorse runs away from Kilready castle when she finds out her brother, Charles, has sold her to marry Lord Dashfort. While there's nothing strikingly wrong with Dashfort, aside from the rumors about his illegitimate child and the recent death of his wife, Rosamund doesn't love him and has no intentions of marrying this man who's way older than her.

In her plight, she meets Paris Burke, an Irish barrister, who is looking for a governess for his two youngest sisters. Taking advantage of his situation, Rosamund pretends to be a governess to earn while she hides. He takes her right away to Merrion Square and the next thing they know, they have developed affections for each other. But will this work, especially in the times when the Irish are rebelling against the English? Can love hopefully blossom out of lies and deception?

This book had a slow start and I almost did not want to finish it, but I'm glad I did. The build-up and excitement did not start until I was in the middle and it followed through 'til the end. The first thing that I loved in this book was the hidden desires and therefore tension between Paris and Rosamund. It was a slow-burn romance that was worth the wait. I adored the couple's character developments and how they eventually chose to be brave as individuals so they can live better lives.

I also loved that the book was feminist (and LGBT-friendly). It portrayed how men and women can be equal even in the earlier times when men were the only ones expected to rule and succeed. It also talked about forgiveness not only of others, but more importantly, of yourself. If you have a big family, you will definitely enjoy this one as it shows how noisy yet happy a big family can be.

I found a few typo errors, mostly missing punctuation marks. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and romance. Trigger warnings include death and sex. Special thanks to NetGalley, Kensington Books, and Lyrical Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The third book in the Rogues and Rebels series, there was never a doubt in my mind that it would be an enjoyable read! The previous book made me feel so many emotions, and I fell in love with the characters. This book was no different, and I found myself eager to turn the page, no matter what else was going on in my life. Finished it in a day, without a shred of regret.

The last thing Rosamund Gorse expected was to find herself fleeing to Ireland from a marriage arranged by her brother, but that's exactly the situation in which she finds herself. Setting out to find a lawyer to protect her, she stumbles upon a job instead, and her plan changes - hide out as a governess to two young girls until she can find a way to escape her brother. Her employer, Paris Burke, is a barrister who was part of the Irish rebellion against British rule. An English woman is the last person he would have hired, but he's desperate and she'll do. Soon enough, though, he rethinks his plan as she wreaks havoc on his tidy world. Maybe things need to be shaken up though, and she might be just the thing his family needs to begin living again.

I love Irish heroes...*sigh*...and Paris' no-nonsense exterior combined with that secretly exuberant interior made for a hunk of a hero. Isn't it every girl's fantasy to take a man who is all buttoned up and get him to see his wild side? Rosamund was the perfect person to get Paris to see the good in life and let go of all his sadness and anger. Not to mention that her last name was perfect for their family, all of whom were named after the floral side of nature. Paris, Daphne, Bellis, Camellia...it was such a cute match! The two young girls were a great addition to the story, adding levity and also stoicism when appropriate. It was interesting to see their relationship develop not just with Rosamund but also with their brother, Paris. And when the rest of the family entered into things, the story got even more entertaining. I love the Burke family and would love it if they were real...and had a single son who was looking...in the 21st century...hehe.

I don't know if there is plans for another book in this series, but I hope this is not the last we see of this family! Brava to Susanna Craig for yet another wonderful book.

Rosamund Gorse had seen a child walk across the garden and went to the nursery but her two pupils were in bed asleep. What had she seen? Lord Dasfort, the children's father wanted to kiss her but she tried to push him away. But he said, "surely you will not deny your future husband a good night kiss?" Her brother had sold her to Lord Dasfort to be his wife. She ran.
Paris Burke was a Barrister. She had run to Dublin in search of a lawyer. She had to get out from under her brother's guardianship. But Paris assumed she wanted the governess spot. On the way to his house, he told Miss Gorse all about his sisters. He came from a large family but they had gone to London and left the two youngest with him.
I really enjoyed this story. It was funny, the banter between characters kept you smiling while you were entertained. All the things this poor girl had to go thru was amazing, thank goodness she had help, Paris, his two sisters, and Eileen. Towards the end, it does get a little sexy so probably should be above eighteen to read. I do recommend it.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed and enjoyed it, greatly.

I haven’t read anything by this author before but I really liked the cover and was interested in giving it a try. I liked the book a good amount but there was a lot that I wasn’t thrilled with also. Rosamund was so very strong willed and I really liked that about her character, but at the same time she was so unbearably naive. And Paris was in some ways a great example of a romance novel hero but he was also very selfish and self-absorbed. There was a lot in this book too that seemed to be related to characters from previous novels in the series – I think I would’ve felt more connected to the story line if I had had some involvement in those story lines as well. And their relationship felt like it was progressing slowly but then it went warp speed when they started getting physical and it just didn’t feel developed enough for what was happening. Overall I liked the book ok but wasn’t especially excited about it.

The Lady's Deception by Susanna Craig is book 3 in the Rogues and Rebels Series. This is the story of Rosamund Gorse and Paris Burke. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Rosamund learns of her brother seem to marry her off to someone she does not want to be with. So she runs away looking to find a way to stop his plans. This leads her to run into Paris who misunderstands who she is and thinks she is a Governess that he need for his younger sisters. Rosamund ends up not correcting him but does take the job hoping to hide out from her brother until she can do something to stop him.

I didn't really like that one. Mostly because I was bored and because there was not enough depth to the characters and the love story.
The book focused less on the romance and more on Rosamund's days as a governess with Paris' little sisters. That's what I usually don't like about the gouverness trope.
There was too much that overshadowed the romance, it was not fully developped, and the book is only 216 pages long so with everything outside the romance there was not a lot of pages left for our two main characters to connect and truly get to know one another so I did not really understand how/why they fell in love.
Not believable and told rather than shown.

This satisfying conclusion to the Irish Burke Family saga centers on the tortured oldest son Paris. Grappling with his friend's death and his brother's injuries, Paris is not looking for love. Rosamund Gorse is focused on escape, not romance. But when these two meet under mistaken circumstances, there are sparks. Despite himself, Paris falls in love and in the process love heals him. Rosamund finds a soulmate ready to support and protect her. Add in two younger sisters, a wayward kitten, and a villainous brother to be foiled, and Paris triumphs.

Really nice historical romance story filled with adorable characters. I also liked that it is funny both in language and event. It features a bold heroin and a remarkable protagonist who are both realistically portrayed. It was such fun to follow the story unfold and warm my heart with hope.
I will surely read the other 2 books in this series, but I would like to spread them out through the year so that I know I can rely on a nice and interesting book for the moments I would like to be pampered by kind words and giggle due to a funny story.

it was interesting to be in the perspective of a non-aristocratic romance. the pair had a true connection and they make each other a better versions of themselves. it’s more heartfelt than any other historical romance i’ve read! 4.5 stars 🌟 rounded down because i kind of feel like the main problem was dealt with a rush, and it just felt like everything worked out too perfectly in the end for the main antagonist.

I enjoyed this book. I had not read the previous books but I was able to jump right in. This can be read as a stand-alone. The story was good and I felt the chemistry between the main characters. On a side note, I hate the cover. It reminds me of a gothic novel from the 1960's.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

Excellent historical romance

The third book in Craig's series didn't disappoint. Eileen's origins and kittenhood are revealed in often amusing detail. One lord finds redemption, a barrister forgives himself, a ghost is unmasked, and a governess finds new employment. And the entire extended family has a lovely Christmas.

A gentleman needing help with his two precocious sisters. A woman on the run from her brother and the cruel man he wishes her to wed. A chance meeting, a mistaken identity, and so many twists and turns! I enjoyed this story. I received an ARC of this book.

I enjoyed this book although it drug in some places. I also felt like we didn’t get to really know our hero and that would have helped me understand more of his hesitation. But I blame this on the fact that I jumped into a series on book three and not due to some lack on the authors part.
