Lake Placid #7

Another Chance

Rate this book
Dena Hall had her life all planned out. She was already making wedding plans with her high school sweetheart and thinking of the number of kids she wanted. He’d said he wanted the same thing, only he didn’t want it in Lake Placid. But she wasn’t leaving her hometown. Rather than talk it out, he broke it off out of the blue, swift and harsh. She swore never to forgive him or take him back.

Matt Winters had everything charted out exactly as he wanted it in life. He was going to be a high profile attorney in a big city. Lake Placid couldn’t give him what he wanted, so he left his true love behind when she wouldn’t agree to move. Then life changed drastically years later, his world was turned upside down, and he realized that having it all meant nothing if he couldn’t have Dena. But she swore she’d never give him another chance and he was determined to win her over... somehow.

I'm on a mission to find at least one good 2nd chance story to prove my oh-so-smart GR friends that one CAN & DOES exist! Well... it seems they were right and I'm wrong because THIS-ISN'T-IT and I may just end up eating crow & being the Queen of all bad taste 2nd chance romances! Lol! Mercy me!

And why do we hate this trope you might say? Because we have yet again a "Zero" who leaves the "love of his life" for greener pastures and waits 12 whole years to return to her to "win" her after he screwed everything in sight, came close to dying and got an "Epiphany"! Oh...and also because he feels like a loser (which he is!) because at age 30-something, he didn't make law partner - and never would 'cause not-so nice step-brother doesn't see him as "family" to promote him, so poor baby decides to lick his wounds by chasing after the idiot heroine...

No folks, I did not read it. I only read a sample to see if it was worth continuing...which it was not for me, so DNF and happy trails to all....

"She took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling, his eyes going right there like the cad he’d been accused of being over the years. He threw the best thing he had away and knew it, so he stopped trying to find anything other than a physical release for years".

“I deserve your anger.”
“I don’t know if I even feel that anymore. I felt it for years. It controlled a lot of me. I had to stop feeling all of that to just move on. You think saying you regret those words is going to make it all go away? That it’s okay you said what you did and made me feel as if my world was exploding around me the day before I was going to leave the only family and support system I had?”

“I’m not a possession. I’m not something you pick up and throw out when you’re done. I’m a person with feelings. With emotions. With anger. That’s a lot to overcome. And if I’m not positive you can do it, why do you think you can?

1 ⭐- Ugh! Didn't like it or triggers or pet peeve!
======================================
Another Zero that kicks our Zeroine to the curb and only comes back after long 12 years when his life goes to the sewer.
No sympathy for him.
I just wasted my time and got annoyed.

“I have to ask. If you hadn’t had your accident, if you hadn’t died and woken up calling my name, would you be here right now?”

“What does she want?” his mother asked. “This has to be about her too, not just you. Don’t be selfish.”

Maybe he’d been practicing his skills with other women over the years and she was getting the leftovers.

They’d been split for over twelve years.

“How bad are his injuries?” Rene asked. “Bad enough that he’s scarred pretty good. It was a reminder of what he lost and why he was here.”

“You’re damn right you did. You ripped her heart out of her chest and stomped on it on the ground, then left it for wild animals to come feast away on it.”

Okay, let me get the pet peeve out of the way up front: lately the time frame between the leaving and the returning is getting longer and longer. Really!?! I cannot believe the emotional climate of an 18 year old is the same as that of a 30 year old woman. If it took the H 12 years to pull his head out of a dark place, I would not bet on his current feelings and emotions. Just saying.

For these h's to be still single and available when their first love returns is also approaching unbelievable.

Okay, I did enjoy the story!

Matt broke Dena’s teenage heart when he broke up with her before they went away to college. She had the rest of their lives planned out together. And she never found anyone to replace him in her heart. Twelve years later he’s back after he almost died in a car accident with much regret and hoping for a second chance. I don’t blame Dena for being afraid to open her heart to him again. But she does let him back in and tells him back that she loves him. He tells her that he will do anything to be with her including living in Lake Placid. But it seems like she doesn’t fully believe it and has one foot out the door in their relationship ready to run at the first sign of trouble. She has to learn to trust if she wants a chance at the family she always dreamed of with Matt. That frustrated me about her. Yes, he did her wrong, but it seems like did so too dangling the carrot that she might want a lifetime relationship if he stays in Lake Placid and then running when she thinks he might be going back to NYC instead of talking about it with him. It was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books in the series.

Book Details
When they were 18 years old Dena and Matt were inseparable until the day Matt told Dena there was no future for them because she refused to leave Lake Placid and he refused to stay. Dena left for college with a broken heart and a vow to never forgive Matt.
Twelve years later Matt is back after a life altering accident with plans to win Dena back and hoping for a second chance. This book is all about how life doesn't always turn out as you planned and just how far you are willing to go to fix it.
There are visits with all the past characters from the rest of the series, but as always this book is a stand-alone with lots and lots of snow.
I think readers will enjoy going along with Dena and Matt on their journey to forgiveness and the future. It's an easy read with many poignant moments.

Does not have much of a plot

This read more like a summary of a story than an actual story. There was little plot. With romance novels you assume that the couple will end up together and that’s fine, but this novel does not leave you wondering how. There’s no conflict. The characters are too perfect and, though we are told they made mistakes in the past, they do everything too perfectly now. The things that seem like will lead to conflict stay in the background so there is no resolution. This story did not follow a typical story arc (conflict, climax, resolution). It was just a couple hundred pages of a couple communicating perfectly with each other, which is incredibly boring.
Additionally, there were syntax and grammar issues. This novel could have benefited from an editor.

boring.
right from the start until the end, it;s just flat. no conflicts, no drama, nothing.
H broke up w/h right after they graduated hi school and bfore they both gone to a dif university. he wants to b a hot shot big lawyer in a big apple city, while she wants to stay at their lil town and not wanting to left behind her dad. so H said mean thing to her. 12 years latter, he came back and boom.. they both fell right back into boifriend and girlfriend. ughh..
ofc at first, she was all talk about not going to forgive him. the next thing we know, she already knocking his door (the next morning! i kid you not). it really is boring. and this could be a short book, but nope!

Another Chance

Though this is the seventh book in this series it is my first book. I love to read about second chances, or the one who got away. They met in high school and became sweethearts. After graduating they were going to different universities. He broke up with her in a harsh way. Now twelve years later he is back. He wants another chance with her. She had threatened him that he would never get her back. Can he win her back? Is he willing to stay or is he there for a short time?

A love thru high school, till college, Matt wanted the big city, what it had to offer and a career as a lawyer. Finding out that people made promise and didn’t keep and using him for their own gain. Coming back to Lake Placid he now saw the small town thru an adult eyes, and a love he brushed aside for the lights of the big city. Will he be able to convince her he is home to stay.

Smith

I enjoyed this book I'm really glad he was finally got his act together and went for the love of his life. The best thing in this book was him telling his step-brother he quit.

Slow

This read started out well. But it just kind of staled about 1/4 of the way in. I kept reading as it was a decent story line, but was really disappointed in the ending. It just...stopped. A solid 3 out of 5. But I wouldn’t go further than that.

Another chance

Quite a story and yet I could realize how Natalie wanted to go. I wondered if there could be a happy ending. The Arthur is a very talented writer.
