Bucket Lists and Walking Sticks

Rate this book
There are reasons for having ‘bucket lists', the truth of which Emma and Darryl discover when, in 2011, a shattering accident leaves Darryl with life changing injuries.
With their priorities rearranged, Emma and Darryl pull out an old laminated bucket list and set off on the adventure of a lifetime. A trip around the world ticking off list items: from drinking Singapore Slings to viewing ancient Petra, kissing Ireland's Blarney Stone and looking for the home of Doc Martin. Leaving Australia, meandering throughout Asia, then Europe, Emma describes their adventures on the high seas and later by high-speed train, in mouth-watering detail, pulling the reader headlong into the sights, life, culture and beauty of each place they visit.

This journal, offering one couple's unique perspective on the experience of seeing the world is enough to make you want to follow in their footsteps immediately - but if you're feeling less adventurous, just read, it's the perfect escape!

Emma Scattergood is the author of the Bucket List Adventure Series and the voice behind darmatravels.com.

Transported overland from England to Australia via Afghanistan and India before her first birthday, travel has shaped her life ever since.

Her memoirs blend humour, honesty, and resilience as she writes about long-term adventures shared with her husband, life after his accident, and her own experience with stage 3 breast cancer in 2022.

Through her stories, Emma shows that curiosity and courage can carry you across the world — or through life’s toughest detours.

When not navigating foreign train stations or planning the next journey, she enjoys playing lawn bowls and embracing life’s unpredictable twists.

A good book that lacks pace, so takes a while to read. I will read the next but more of a tourist tale than a travel book.

I love a good travelogue, and for me, this was one! Each chapter centred on a different part of the trip and a different place. Each chapter also began with a quote from the blog they kept while traveling, which I thought was a nice touch. It was a good balance of things they learned, experiences they had, places they visited and anecdotes. If you like travelogues, I'd definitely recommend this one!

I received a free e-copy of this book through BookSirens.

If you want to feel as if you're going on a journey without leaving the comfort of your home then this book is perfect for you.

I felt as if I was part of the journey as the descriptive detail allowed my mind to wonder and my imagination to explode.

Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this book. Beware- may make you decide just to make your own
bucket list and set of on a journey of a lifetime.
