4 stars for a pleasant short story--only 54 pages. I read it in 1 hour. It starts out with a vicious hit and run, where an Amish teenager walking home from a high school dance is targeted by someone in a car. Painters Mill Police Chief Kate Burkholder is called to the scene. Her investigation discloses multiple suspects. She does resolve the case with the help of her officers. The teenager, Noah Kline, was seeing an "English"(non Amish) girl. Kate was raised Amish but left the Amish when she was a teenager.

Linda Castillo really knows how to write a good novella. Only sixty pages long but she introduces an intriguing story, builds up interesting characters, and gives us lots of excitement and a happy ending. It is really worth a read.
This series is always good for learning about the Amish way of life but reading about Rumspringa I wonder if it is just tempting fate a little too far! Though of course Kate would only be meeting the problem teens, not the ones who go on to live a happy Amish life.
The only drawback to this book is of course that although a novella is good, a full length book is even better. The next in the series is full length so I am happy.
This series is always good for learning about the Amish way of life but reading about Rumspringa I wonder if it is just tempting fate a little too far! Though of course Kate would only be meeting the problem teens, not the ones who go on to live a happy Amish life.

Noah Kline, a 17-year old Amish boy, is walking home after spending the evening with his English girlfriend when he’s deliberately and viciously struck by a car and left in a field. When he’s discovered the next day, Police Chief Kate Burkholder doesn’t know if it’s a simple hit and run or something more.
I have to now admit that the short stories in this series have become favorites. In just a short amount of time we get the crime, array of suspects, the procedurals to solve the case and an exciting resolution. That’s hard to do well in a full length novel yet it’s done so compellingly here. I wasn’t certain about the whodunit until the real, which coincided with the discovery of key clues. Since more details would be spoilerish, I’ll just stop there. Listening to the story added to my enjoyment as the narrator is my voice of the series in such a good way. Nice little mystery with a strong theme to add to the mix.

This is an Amish Mystery Novella, and this is book 10.5 in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read and review books 1-10 in this series before picking up this series. This is a very short stories it is 60 pages. There is a lot put into this short story, and the characters where really developed. I really enjoyed this mystery, but the twist I saw coming before it was revealed. This mystery is about solving who hit an Amish young boy/man that got hit by a car, and he was dating an Non-Amish young Lady/Girl. I really love the novellas in this series because they have so much put into so little pages and fast moving.

In Plain Sight is #10.5 of the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo and it was another excellent read. A short story, it tells of Amish boy Noah Kline as he walks home from a night out with his girlfriend in Painters Mill. The car that struck him on the quiet, dark country road, didn’t stop and when he was discovered, Noah was near death. Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, began the investigation and it didn't take long to find it wasn’t an accident. Who would purposely hit a young man, walking alone at night? And why? Kate was determined to find the answers. Recommended.

Ah, what to read as a “’tweener” when I’m not quite ready to roll up my sleeves and dig into another heavy-duty current-events-type non-fiction book? Linda Castillo is one of my go-to authors, and thanks to my Goodreads friend, Thomas, I discovered In Plain Sight, a short story about a young Amish man who is ruthlessly run down by a car as he walks home late one night.
Noah Kline is seventeen and enjoying the freedom Rumspringa, which enables him to enjoy non-Amish activities such as Homecoming, which is where he’s been with his English girlfriend the night he’s struck and sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Kate Burkholder, Painter’s Mill’s Chief of Police, has her work cut out for her since each of her suspects points a finger at someone else. Will Noah’s girlfriend Ashley be able to provide any helpful information?
In this fast-moving story, Castillo manages to squeeze in one of her ongoing themes: Dislike and distrust of those who are different. Noah and Ashley’s families are not happy that their teens are seeing one another, and one teen refers to Noah as a “cringey” Amish kid.
As with other short stories in this series, In Plain Sight lacks the depth of plot and character development that the novels have, but I found it to be a pleasant diversion on a Saturday afternoon.

I always enjoy catching up with Kate, Tomasetti and any of the other recurring Painters Mill characters. The crime is solved in this short story, but there seem to be characters that may still cause problems in the future for Kate and I will be interested to see if they are uncovered in the next full length installment of the series.

4 Consistent Amish stars
Linda Castillo consistently delivers with her Kate Burkholder series. This one is a short e-book, but filled with all the usual elements of her books that I really enjoy. It was perfect for my recent vacation, short enough that it kept my attention amidst distractions at the airport.
A hit and run accident has sinister undertones for the Ohio town where Kate Burkholder serves as police chief. She straddles the Amish and English worlds solving crimes like no one else!
Keep writing 'em Linda and I'll definitely keep reading these great books!

First read by this author (I think) and it will not be my last. Not realizing it was a series, I am currently reading book #1. Although the crimes are hideous, I like the strong character, Kate Burkholder and her dedication to her work and the Amish community.

A local Amish boy, Noah Kline, was found injured and bleeding in a field. It looks like he was struck by a car while he walked along the highway. The driver may have panicked and fled. But as Police Chief Kate Burkholder looks over the scene, she begins to think this was no accident. Noah may have been deliberately targeted after taking an English girl to the homecoming dance. As Noah lapses into a coma, Chief Burkholder uncovers evidence of a sinister crime.
This novella was a good addition to the Kate Burkholder series. There were several viable suspects that kept me guessing. My rating: 4 Stars.

Short, sweet and to the point -- suspenseful! A trip back to Amish country and Sheriff Burkholder has a hit and run case on her hands -- and a bunch of teenagers in the middle of it all. A quick glimpse of Tomasetti who always rides to Kate's rescue is always a treat. I love this series and am always eagerly awaiting the next book from Linda Castillo.

Another winner in the Kate Burkholder library, this one in short story form. It’s Amish, per usual, but only halfway. An Amish boy dating an English (non-Amish) girl, much against the wishes of the girl’s family. Police Chief Kate goes through the paces of the investigation, and her small-town department stands behind her every step.
This expertly written series always provides thrills, even in short form. I’m glad to have read the Burkholder short stories. As intriguing as the mysteries are in novel form, these brief blasts offer more insight into the characters and make for fun, quick reads.

I really like the books by Linda Castillo about Kate Burkholder. I was happily surprised when I found some of these shorter books. She gets a lot of story into 90 minutes! These are perfect to listen to while I'm waiting for the longer books.

This is my 14th book I’ve read by Linda Castillo and as soon as I read one of her books, I cannot wait for her next one. Yes, she’s that good!! This is a very short book so it’s a quick read. Read it in an hour.

I love reading the novellas in this series as they feel like complete stories. They don't feel like money grabs, but rather a true story to tide you over till the full-length novel is published. I highly recommend them, but you will not miss anything but skipping them.

While I love Kate Burkholder, I am finding the novellas just aren't as strong as the full length novels. The mystery was just too simplistic and I was underwhelmed.

This was a short novelette, about 129 pages, and I read it in one sitting. This story started with a young Amish man walking home from a dance at the high school, happy that he kissed his girlfriend for the first time. Then he hears a car behind him on the gravel road, but despite his swerving and trying to avoid it, he is hit and left in a neighbour's field. Kate Burkholder investigates and finds out that his girlfriend is "English" (non-Amish) and that there is a dark clique at the school. With Skid's help, it is quickly cleared up.

In this novella we follow Kate as she investigates the case of a teenage boy who is the victim of a hit and run. As the case progesses it becomes clear that there is a sinister reason behind the crime. This was a great novella in the series and I really enjoyed. I have found that some of the novellas are just okay for me but this one was very good. Again I have the same critique as the others, I wish that there was more of the side characters featured in it.

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Castillo's Kate Burkholder series so when I saw this short story pop up in my library queue, I had to request it.
In Plain Sight, a young Amish man is nearly killed in a hit and run on his way home from seeing his English girlfriend.
When Chief Burkholder is called to the scene, she delves into a case that turns out to be much more; an angry suitor, a disgruntled father and a secret, not so secret society of bullying, violence and rage.
I love Kate, John and the community of Painters Mill and enjoy any opportunity to read about them.
There's not much of a mystery to unravel here but its always a joy to read about Kate, her loyal crew of police officers and the love between her and John.

In Plain Sight by Linda Castillo is a short story about a young Amish boy, Noah Kline. In this story, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder believes that Noah is a victim of a hit and run driver. As she investigates further she finds out some other information that changes the premise of the investigation.
I enjoyed reading this short story. Linda Castillo has a way of engaging the reader within the story. She also has a way of allowing the reader to appreciate the Amish way of life and how they interact with the Englishers. This story was a great insight into two young people from two ways of life and how they interact. In Plain Sight by Linda Castillo is a great short read.
