Meet the unforgettable men of London's most notorious tavern, The Wicked Duke. Seductively handsome, with charm and wit to spare, one night with these rakes and rogues will never be enough...
Faced with a marriage she can’t abide, Lady Penelope Wakefield takes drastic measures to preserve her freedom. Her brilliant plan is foolproof until a sexy but imperious rector “rescues” her.
Rector Hugh Tarleton has no patience for the Society philanthropists who seek to bestow their pity—and not much else—on his oppressed flock in one of London’s worst neighborhoods. When the daughter of a marquess is kidnapped and brought to the rookery, he vows to protect her, but the temptation to surrender to their mutual desire will certainly ruin them both.

Series: Wicked Dukes Club #6 Publication Date: 6/25/19
Goodness! This turned out to be a delightful read. I had been concerned about this one because it concerned a rector – and frankly – I just didn’t want to read a sexy romp starring a clergyman. The author handled it beautifully and the love story was really lovely and the rector was a good and honorable man right to the end. Kudos to the author for managing to do that.
The story was also a good wrap-up for the series. We got to catch up with all of the previous couples in the series as they each played at least a small part in our current couple’s HEA. I would have loved it even more if it had an epilogue. Something 5, 10, 15, however many years into the future – maybe at a gathering at one of the Ducal estates. We could see how all of the couples had weathered the storms of life and how each couple’s family and love had grown. Maybe we could even learn that there were some really nasty things that happened to the villains in the stories – like Penelope’s father (maybe even mother) in this story.
Lady Penelope Wakefield is the child of cold, unfeeling, uncaring and cruel parents. Her only use to her father is to further his aims – since he is already rich, he’ll use her for political gain. He plans to formally betroth her to a lecherous old man who is old enough to be her grandfather. For once in her life, Penelope has had enough and decides to take action to save herself. However, having been sheltered her entire life – with no friends at all – she is extremely naïve and puts her trust in the wrong person. Instead of a ‘fake’ kidnapping, she walks into a real one. Lucky for her, she’s rescued by the most compassionate and caring man she has ever seen. As she tells him her tale of woe, she doesn’t see pity or disdain on his face. There is only compassion there and he agrees not to immediately return her to her home and parents. He’ll assist her in staying away overnight and will then return her the next day. That overnight stay doesn’t go exactly as planned and they spend a lot of time talking and getting to know each other.
Rector Hugh Tarleton comes from a well-to-do family but has absolutely no use for the people in society. Well – except for the dukes and others at the Wicked Dukes Club – but – they are all different. Hugh recognizes Lady Penelope as soon as he sees her and comes to her rescue. He can’t abide the idea that she’ll be forced to marry the man she describes, so he goes along with her staying away from home overnight so she can be ‘ruined’.
Yet, the plan goes awry and her parents manage to keep news of her ‘kidnapping’ from becoming known – even to her ‘betrothed’. That means the marriage is still in the plan. Now, she’s watched constantly, there is no way to escape. She just really wishes the earth would open up and swallow her rather than leaving her to this fate.
You will absolutely adore Hugh. He is the kindest, most caring and honorable man you’ll meet in a book. He’s the real deal. He’s a rector because that is what he chose to be – not because that is something his family expected a younger son to become. His father actually encouraged him to pursue another profession. You will also love Penelope who is kind and caring and you have to wonder how she could have possibly turned out that way given her parentage. She’s never been comforted, held, loved or cared for in any way at all.
I absolutely loved the two of them together. He’s such a hero – and she has finally learned to stand up for herself and what she wants. The wedding scene was wonderful – I won’t tell you about it because it would spoil it, but it really is great.
I highly recommend this read and I hope you love it as much as I did.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 Of all the books this series , this is the sweetest romance, Hugh and Pen are so perfect together , they are sigh worthy .
After her failed kidnapping, Pen is helped by a Rector. Sheltered and protected by him ,she tells him all her troubles and begins to fall for his sweet and adorable nature , he’s one in a million , but he can never be hers , she betrothed to a man old enough to be her grand sire .
Hugh is smitten there’s no other word for it , with his parish troubles he has enough on his plate, but Pen is his destiny, he can feel it , he just has to believe it will all come right .
All through this story you find yourself taking deep breaths and hoping the two find a way to be together , that they are made for each other is never in doubt.
If you want to know how it turns out . I’m not letting on , read it yourself.
Beautiful, emotional and satisfying.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
One Night of Temptation by Darcy Burke is book 6 in the Wicked Dukes Club Series. This is the story of Hugh Tarleton and Penelope Wakefield. I have read the previous books but feel you could make this a standalone book. Penelope's father is setting up a marriage for her to someone that could be her grandfather, so she set a plan in motion to avoid it. But her plan goes wrong which leads her to Hugh. Hugh tries to help Penelope which leads to them getting to know each other. When they think it is safe for Penelope to return home she does but then Hugh learns that their plan didn't work. Although he has no title to offer her which is what held him back he now doesn't want to loose her. Enjoyed their story.
I’ve enjoyed a number of Darcy Burke’s historical romances in the past and have reviewed a number of them favourably, but I’m afraid I can’t do that for her latest release, One Night of Temptation. The book is the sixth in the Wicked Dukes Club series which Ms. Burke has co-authored with Erica Ridley (they have written alternate books with Ms. Ridley penning the odd numbered ones and Ms. Burke the even) – featuring a group of friends, not all of whom are dukes, who meet regularly at their favourite watering hole in St. Giles – The Wicked Duke. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series, but they’re designed to work as standalones, so potential readers can jump in anywhere and not have to worry about feeling lost.
What they do need to worry about with this book, however, is its utter flimsiness. One Night of Temptation is short for a novel, coming in at under two hundred pages, but there’s not even enough plot to fill that short a page count. The romance is basically love at first sight, the principals are bland and there’s little to no chemistry between them, and the whole story is wrapped up in about a week.
Lady Penelope Wakefield, daughter of the Marquess of Bramber is fleeing an unwanted marriage to an unpleasant lecher old enough to be her grandfather. She’s hatched a plan together with a young woman she met and befriended on a charitable errand at a church in St. Giles; Penelope is going to be abducted (but not really) and spend a night away from home which, when word gets out, will be enough to ruin her reputation, and the old goat won’t want to marry her after that. But it turns out that poor naïve Pen was duped, and the woman she thought of as a friend had made plans for a real kidnap and ransom. Fortunately for Pen, the men trying to hustle her away are prevented from doing so by the timely intervention of Hugh Tarleton, Rector of the parish of St. Giles who, learning of her situation, takes her to a decent inn he knows and arranges for them both to spend the night there (in separate rooms of course). But while the inn is decent, the area is rough and after a fight breaks out downstairs, Hugh decides it would be safest if they shared a room – Pen taking the bed, he in the chair by her side, naturally. They work out a plan by which Pen can be returned to home and safety now that she’s been publicly ruined, and even though her father will be furious and will probably send her to the family’s remote estate in Lancashire, that’s better than being married to the obnoxious Earl of Findon. During the course of the evening, however, she becomes aware that an even better alternative would be marriage to Hugh… but of course, that’s impossible. She’d never be allowed to marry so far beneath her, even if Hugh were interested.
About half the book is taken up with the Night of Temptation that Pen and Hugh spend holed up at the inn. They talk and get to know each other a bit, and Pen realises she’s experiencing attraction for the first time. Hugh is good looking, yes, but he’s also kind, strong and exudes confidence – and he’s unlike any man she’s ever met. Hugh is smitten as well and longs to protect Pen from her unfeeling parents, but knows he can’t possibly aspire to the hand of the daughter of a marquess.
One Night of Temptation was a quick read, but a dull one. Caring, stalwart Hugh (who, incidentally, is described in the blurb as “imperious” but is nothing of the sort) had the potential to be a lovely hero, but Pen was almost a blank slate; all we knew about her was that her parents were shits, she was afraid of her father and she liked embroidery and cream cheese. She seems to have no relationships outside her immediate family and to have led a very sheltered life – yet of course she has the instincts of a temptress.
Ultimately, I’m afraid I was bored, and the only temptation I experienced while reading was to put the book down and not pick it up again.
3.5 stars rounded up for a charming fairy tale in which a Lady falls in love with a rector and finds her happily ever after!
The cynic in me would love to point out that this book is so much over the top. I mean. A rector with a parish in St. Giles of all places. And a Lady. But it was done very well, and I ended up being charmed despite being a a bit of a curmudgeon.
Hugh and Penelope were a lovely couple! Hugh is a lovely addition to a series with perfectly normal, average, and, above all, nice heroes.
This unlikely couple meets when Lady Penelope's plan to ruin herself to avoid marriage to a lecherous marquess her father has picked out after her failure to attract a suitor on her own goes terribly wrong. They only spend an evening and a night together, but because Darcy Burke is a great writer, even I ended up believing in their happy end.
This is a truly lovely series, with genuinely nice people you want to spend time with. If you're looking for a lovely collection of short novellas, I can only recommend this series!
*I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
Lady Penelope Wakefield needs to escape, her father the Marquess of Bramber has arranged a marriage for her to the Earl of Findon - the father of her deceased betrothed and a man old enough to be her grandfather with a vile and debauched reputation. Her parents are thrilled with the match and brush off Pen’s concerns, leaving her no choice but to come up with a plan to ruin herself to avoid the marriage.
She ditches her chaperone while visiting the British Museum and sets off for St. Giles to be “kidnapped” but when her ruse turns into a real kidnapping, she is terrified and unable to escape her captors. Thankfully, Rector Hugh Tarleton, sees her struggling with two men from his parish and intervenes. He offers to return Pen to her family, but when she tells him what happened and how she is trying to be ruined to escape marriage to Findon, Hugh offers to help her start a new life, but Pen is honest and says she wouldn’t be able to live the life he suggests, he asks if she really believes her plan to be “ruined” will work, yes, then he will help her and then return her to her family in the morning.
They take rooms in the inn and spend the night talking, getting to know each other and evading the runners looking for her. He is captivated and tempted by her but he has nothing to offer her, his family is well off, but socially, he cannot hope to marry a marquess’ daughter. When it is clear they are no longer safe at the inn, he takes her to the church and finally gives into the temptation and shares a kiss with her. In the morning, he returns her to her family and tries to forget her. But Hugh soon learns that her plan did not work, she is still engaged to Findon and will be lost to him forever unless he is willing to risk all to save her.
This was such a sweet story with a lot of emotion, some action, very likeable leads, warm love scenes and cameos from the previous characters in the series. It is the sixth and final book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone title with no problems.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me*
This was a very sweet ending to a fun series. I enjoyed Hugh and Pen’s adventure. Hugh is my favorite type of hero, the celibate kind. Not a rake or a rogue, just a nice, kind man. And poor Pen! Hugh was just the hero she needed. I enjoyed this novella. The writing is good and there is nice character development for a short format. I don’t love novellas but that’s generally because I would like to spend more time with the characters. This series worked well because of the reoccurring characters so you get the chance to meet them in the previous books before they became the H/h of the next book.
Cinderella in reverse? Not the scullery maid but the downtrodden daughter of a marquess whose family has ensured her engagement to a rancid roue, the Earl of Findon, old enough to be her grandfather. Careful planning has Lady Penelope Wakefield, daughter of the Marquess of Bramber, sneaking away from her dreadful companion whilst at the British Museum. Her plan is to be supposedly kidnapped, have the news published in the Times, setting her beyond the pale, compromised and therefore having the Earl refuse to marry her. Of course things don't go to plan and that's when Rector Hugh Tarleton rescues Pen. Cupid's arrow does the rest and the story continues with Pen's predicament not resolving as she'd hoped and Hugh trying to think of a plan. Hugh is certainly a most unexpected rector, but then his parish is in the heart of the rookeries, and so I guess we must allow him his humanness, because he certainly sees plenty. I just loved the premise of the story, but unfortunately in the actual reading, I found Hugh and Pen's interactions somewhat wooden. Their conversations did not sparkle. The heart was there but that special something, that liveliness, was missing. However, if you're a fan of the Dukes Tavern series you will want to read Hugh and Pen's story. I'm a little unsure as to why we focused on Pen's love of cream cheese, but when a poor little rich girl has so few opportunities of enjoyment I suppose this will do. Of course the gaggle of denizens of Dukes Tavern we've seen already become involved in making things happen. Even though that is just a little to contrived, it does underscore the strengths that the tavern is and the sense of support, belonging and togetherness it is.
Loving this series by Ridley and Burke. I've been plowing through Ridley's books and, I believe, this is my first read of Burke's. She did not disappoint.
Lady Penelope is to be wed to a horror of a man and she can't abide. So, she plans and pays for her own kidnapping to be returned ruined and unmarriageable. Unfortunately, Penelope is double crossed and the Rector Hugh comes to her rescue. They concoct a plan to keep her safe and that will send her back home in a ruined state. It doesn't go as planned and the awful suitor starts taking liberties with penelope every chance he gets. Hugh will have none of it. Pen and Hugh falling for each other in the sweetest.
Penelope’s Dad is horrific! Hugh is a gem of a man. It was great how the men and women from The Wicked Duke helped at the end. I highly recommend the Wicked Dukes Club Series.
Thank you to Darcy Burke Publishing for this advanced eARC.
One Night of Temptation is the 6th book in the Wicked Dukes Club series by Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley. Erica is writing the odd-numbered books while Darcy is writing the even-numbered books in the series. This is the final book in the series and what a way to end it...I think this is my favourite book of all of them!
Lady Penelope (Pen) Wakefield lives at home with her parents. They are uncaring people and her father is the worst of the two. For his own political gain, he arranges a marriage for her. Pen is horrified to learn it is to a man who is old enough to be her grandfather, one who is unattractive and a letch! If she refuses to marry him then her parents will disown her and cut off her allowance. The only way she can see to get out of the wedding is to cause a scandal supposedly not of her own making, which will dishonour her, in turn making her betrothed take back his offer of marriage. Things go awry though and Pen finds herself being rescued by Hugh Tarleton.
Hugh is a rector who is very liked and respected. He goes over and beyond when it comes to his parishioners, and he does all that he can to help the poor. When he sees a woman, Pen, in trouble he rescues her and listens to her story. He is appalled at what her father intends to do, and it doesn't take much convincing for him to keep her safe whilst making sure that her scandalous plans come to fruition.
Hugh may be a rector but that doesn't stop him appreciating Pen as a woman. From the moment she is safe he is instantly very attracted to her. Unknown to him the attraction is mutual. By the time they separate, the next day, they both feel much more than just a physical attraction. It can't go anywhere though because there is too much of a class difference between them, it wouldn't be allowed.
Hugh and Pen are both horrified when they learn that the family has managed to keep quiet what supposedly happened to her and that she was away from home overnight, possibly ruined, and that the wedding is going to go ahead. There is no way out for her now, or is there???
I loved this story so much and a lot of that is to do with the fact that Hugh was such a wonderful character. He is such a gentleman and was born to be a rector, his nature is so caring. Pen has always helped the poor whenever she has been able to, and despite being highly born she would make a perfect rector's wife. Where her family are mean, cold people, she is the absolute opposite. With a very real sexual attraction between Pen and Hugh joined with absolute respect for each other they would make a perfect husband and wife. But how can that happen unless they find a way to stop the marriage that her parents have planned??
Perhaps Hugh's friends from the Wicked Duke's Club will be able to help them out??
I loved this story so much and I am afraid that my review isn't doing justice to just how great it is. Everything was just perfect especially, of course, the ending. What a sigh-worthy moment that was. It was definitely the perfect end to a perfect series and I am sad that there will be no more stories revolving around the fabulous characters of the Wicked Duke's Club.
Penelope and Hugh had at least one thing in common, the bishop wanted Hugh to marry and Penelope’s father had arranged a marriage to a despicable lord. Penelope was desperate to escape such a marriage. It was while she was attempting to do this that she met Hugh. They found they had a very strong connection but unfortunately they came from different stations in life. This was a delightful story about two very likeable people, a few villains and some very helpful friends. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had an other book planned for today but as this one landed on my kindle shelves, I was eager to read the last one in The Wicked Dukes series. I meet Hugh Tarleton in the previous books, he was already portrayed as a very kind man, always ready to help others. And Lady Penelope was introduced (for what I do remember) in the previous book. So I was not sure about her at first, she seemed content with her outcome in One Night To Remember, and here she was trying to flee her fate. Her change of mind was explained but she was so ready to accept the society’s rules, it surprised me, then her plan to escape was what I do think a Lady could have concocted, her reactions ringed true. their encounter which lasted a night was full of temptations and frustrations. During their short time together they get to know another, share their dreams and expectations but they can’t rejoin together as their society’s rank separates them already. Hugh is such a caring soul, whom others well-being take precedence before his. After naming himself her protector, he is willing to become her savior if he can free her from the major impediment that tears them apart, even if it is to let her go. He is her champion, her knight in shining armor with the noble steed, and he did relish to ask for help when necessary. A lovely last installment for this great series. 4.5 stars.
I was provided by the author and Netgalley an advance copy but I already had purchased this book. So here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Freedom! Now just to get to her friend in St Giles and she would escape the marrige to that awful man! But Lady Penelope Wakefield only found herself in a jam as two ruffians tried to kidnap her! But fate, or could it be devine intervention! steps in and Rector Hugh Tarleton steps in and rescues her. Ironically he knew the lads and could only try to set them back on the right path! Hugh is one of the last in a group of friends who meet at The Wicked Duke tavern. Surprised to find the lady was Penelope that was being kidnapped, he took her to a nearby inn to sit and talk so he could find out what was happening. Hugh had such a compassionate heart and as she talked to him it seemed he sparked something within her... Her goal was to make herself unmarriagble and look like she was ruined by staying away from home. Brilliant idea? Well maybe, but maybe not. I adored this story. Penelope had not felt a lot of love during her life and as Hugh finds out, she is not the "typical" society peer. Those who can afford it most and barely giveto help the needy. Hugh only wants to protect her and as they talk through the night and get to know each other there is a real connection. Can these two ever come together? A Clergyman and a lady of society? Be prepared to fall in love with Hugh and hope that Penelope can get out of her arranged marriage. A perfect ending to this brilliant series that I have enjoyed through every sigh worthy hero and the women that grab their heart!!
Lady Penelope Wakefield has arranged to have herself kidnapped in the hope that once she is seen as ruined the man her parents want her to marry will not want her. Obviously things do not go as planned. Hugh Tarleton is the Rector of St, Giles'church, in a very unsavoury area of London. He steps in when two of his parishioners are up to no good. He doesn't know just how much that will change his life. This is a witty and sweet historical romance with lovely characters . Our heroine has put herself in a lot of danger. Our hero is nowhere near her social standing so how can he possibly help. Good fun.
A great ending to a fantastic series. This is the perfect ending to this series of the Wicked Dukes Club. You always wonder how an author will handle a rector hero in a story. This was done with great respect and lovely writing. Hugh and Penelope fall in love quickly but Ms. Burke’s storytelling compels you to believe that their love was fast and ardent. A very romantic story.
I received a complimentary copy from the author through NetGalley.
One Night of Temptation was another amazing installment in the Wicked Dukes Club series and features my favorite romance of the series.
Faced with a marriage she doesn’t want, Lady Penelope Wakefield decides to take matters into her own hands and has herself “kidnapped” in order to ruin herself. Her plan is working perfectly until the sexy Hugh Tarleton, rector in one of London’s worst neighborhoods, rescues her. After Hugh vows to protect her, the pair take shelter only to be faced with an unexpected attraction that threatens to ruin them both.
Penelope is used to doing as her parents wish, but after they want to marry her to a man old enough to be her grandfather she realizes if she doesn’t stand up for herself now then she never will. I liked that Penelope was clever enough to come up with a plan to save herself even if I thought she was a bit naive to think everything would go exactly as she planned.
As the second son of a second son, or something like that, Hugh was always going to have to work for a living and I admired his choice to find a profession in which he could help people. Despite his family’s wish that he would choose a more suitable profession, it’s clear that Hugh cares about his parishioners and truly loves his work.
Penelope and Hugh are acquainted with each other prior to Hugh’s “rescue” of Penelope due to her being involved in some charity work at his church, but despite that acquaintance they don’t really know each other or have an interest in one another at that point. They do however quickly become attracted to one another during their conversations prior to Penelope being returned to her family. I loved how hard the two tried to fight their attraction and how it was a fruitless effort as they couldn’t help themselves when it came to each other. When their relationship does progress, it’s wonderfully done with some amazing scenes between the pair.
Overall One Night of Temptation was a fantastic conclusion to Wicked Dukes Club series and one of my favorites in the series. I will definitely be checking out more from these authors in the future and I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for shorter historical romances.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Faced with a marriage she can’t abide, Lady Penelope Wakefield takes drastic measures to preserve her freedom. She thinks her brilliant plan is foolproof until a sexy but imperious rector “rescues” her.
This book is the last of the 6 books in the series by a pair of best selling authors. I have read and enjoyed all six but the last two book had an interesting twist to their premise. Rather than pairing two young people of the aristocratic class these have seemingly crossed over. There is the fact that in this one the Rector was born into an aristocratic family but being a third son he was expected to find his way in the military but chose instead the clergy.
Although this twist seemed to throw me off as I am used to the usual rather than the unusual this was still a very enjoyable book and received 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization.
I received a digital ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this novella which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Since her father has lost patience with her and arranged an odious marriage to a man twice her age, Lady Penelope Wakefield must take things into her own hands if she hopes to gain her freedom. Everything is going to plan until her friend betrays her and she winds up in the midst of a true kidnapping and is rescued by an attractive, if a bit arrogant, rector.
Rector Hugh Tarleton has lost his patience with members of high society who offer pity to his parishioners and not much else. Despite being highborn serving in one of the worst rookeries of London, Hugh is well respected and takes the kidnapped daughter of a marquess under his protection. Since she was taken in and betrayed by someone at his church, Hugh feels responsible for Penelope's safety and very soon she has him reevaluating his preconceived notions of society ladies.
As they spend the night forced together in close quarters, their chemistry ignites and Hugh begins to wonder just how he'll bear returning Penelope to parents who clearly don't appreciate her. One night will never be enough, but he knows she'll never be allowed a future with him. Unless she can take a chance on changing her fate.
This was a fun read and it was nice to see more of the quiet and kind Hugh and to see Penelope stand up for herself and create her own family. This has been a delightful series and this was a wonderful conclusion with all of the characters together again. I'm sad to see this one end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the last book in the Wicked Dukes Club series and I've enjoyed it so very much, I wish they would continue on forever:) Darcy Burke proves herself to be an awesome writer once again with "One Night of Temptation"!! This one is a bit unusual as it involves a Rector as the hero of the story but oh, what a handsome and worthy hero he is.
Rector Hugh Tarleton finds himself in the right place at the right time to rescue Lady Penelope Wakefield from being kidnapped by one of his parishioners in the rookeries of London. He learns that she had planned a "kidnap" and to spend a night away from home so that she'd be considered "ruined" and not forced to marry the awful man her parents have chosen for her. However, her plans had gone awry and she really was being kidnapped for real until Hugh came along. He vows to protect her but spending the night with her is filled with temptation!!
I loved the story, I loved the characters, I loved the slow burn, I loved it all! Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley have done an exceptional job with this series and I, as a reader, thank them for giving us such enjoyable books to read.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Lady Penelope is willing to anything to get out of marrying the horrible man her parents chose for her. Even fake a kidnapping. In the process of this, she meets Hugh the local clergyman and he agrees to help her hide for the night and then take her home the next morning, helping ruin her in the eyes of society and making her unmarriageable.
I loved Penelope from chapter one. Penelope is so strong and brave to do whatever she has to get out of a marriage with a man she hates. I love how kind and witty Penelope is. Hugh was such an amazing hero. His compassionate nature and desire to help everyone made me fall in love with him. Penelope and Hugh have such great chemistry. My favorite parts are what happened in the hotel room when he was hiding her and the first kiss scene. I was excited to finally see a clergyman as a hero in a regency romance novel that isn't religious. I have always wanted more clergyman heroes in my regency books because it was a common profession of the time and it seems like it is such a neglected romance novel idea. I loved this book and if you love regency romance I highly recommend it.

Lady Penelope Wakefield is going to be married to an aging earl who is the father of her deceased fiance so she takes drastic measures to preserve her freedom. Her brilliant plan is foolproof until a sexy but imperious rector “rescues” her. Rector Hugh Tarleton has no patience for the Society philanthropists who seek to bestow their pity and not much else on his oppressed flock in St Giles one of London’s worst neighbourhoods. When he rescues Pen he discovers that all society ladies are not the same. A lovely, lovely finale of this brilliant series. I love the authors books as her characters are always very well portrayed & believable. I adored Hugh who wanted to save everyone & he certainly had his work cut out for him with his parish in a rookery. Pen was feisty & determined not to marry the lecherous Earl of Findon & she never in her wildest dreams thought to encounter someone like Hugh. The road to their HEA wasn’t easy but it was hugely entertaining & I once again read into the night to finish it as no way could I put it down. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I can't believe that it took me so long to read this book, huh I had requested it and then had so many books that could not find the time, and I regret it, I enjoyed as I tend to always do with Darcy's books. So when I read the blurb I was a little way, you know someone from the rectory but then I said to myself this is Darcy and I can't imagine it being something that I would not like and I was right. I loved Hugh (Mr. Tarleton), Hugh came to Lady Penelope's rescue when she was about to be kidnapped and that began their love affair. No it wasn't one of the insta love, but as they spend time together out of necessity they began to know each other and fall in love...ahh I was in love myself..Lady Penelope was in desperate need of a plan to avoid marrying the old man her parents had picked out for her and she thinks this had made a friend to who will assist her but finds out that is not the case, luckily for her that while she was about to be abducted, Hugh comes to her rescue in more than she could have possibly wanted..Grab a copy and Enjoy! I am going to look for the next one from Ms. Burke.
Rcvd and ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
This is amusing, romantic, entertaining and sweet. When Penelope doesn't find a husband at the end of the season, her parents decide to marry her off to the man who at one time was to be her father-in-law. Pen wants nothing to do with the old lecher, so she sets up a kidnapping, thinking that she'll be ruined and the old man wouldn't want her anymore. The problem with that is that she actually gets kidnapped, and Hugh, the rector in St. Giles, rescues her. She tells him why she is doing it and he agrees to help. A strong attraction between them tortures them because neither think it's possible for them to marry. And while Hugh is doing his best to be a gentleman, Pen is trying to get him to actually ruin her. Things don't go the way they're supposed to, a few twists dictate their actions. Pen is great, she's bold, determined and flirty. Hugh is stubborn, chivalrous and caring. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Another amazing read by Darcy Burke! The heroin is quite a rebell and doesn't fit into the society she is predestined to be. Penelope Wakefield, the daughter of marquess Bramber, is lovely, interesting person who wants nothing else than escape from her current life. When she finally manages to flee she happens to find herself in a very unfortunate situation. After Rector Hugh Tarleton comes to her aid they spend one night filled with talking and both of them seem to found the other one's soul mate. She falls instantly in love with him. Except, she is betrothed to someone else's. Does she want to? Absolutely not, but she doesn't have a choice, or does she though? I laughed quite a lot and honestly have to say I immensely enjoyed this tale. For anyone who loves short entertaining, historical book it's the right choice.
One Night of Temptation Wicked Dukes Club book 6 by Darcy Burke
This brings the end of the Wicked Dukes Club series by two amazing and very talented authors! A not to be missed final instalment, an easy read that’s witty with amazing dialogue and even more likeable characters. The storyline flowed well and captured the readers interest. Lady Penelope and Mr. Tarleton were perfect together, plenty of chemistry, intrigue that I’m sad to see the end of the Wicked Dukes! I highly recommend the series well written and entertaining. Can’t wait to read the next amazing read by Darcy Burke!
I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
In a time when marriages are usually arranged by father’s for financial or political gains, Penelope finds herself about to become engaged to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She decides to fake her own kidnapping and if she stays out overnight she will be ruined in the eyes of society and he will refuse to marry her. Things do not work out like she had planned but in the end there is a surprise wedding that even she had not thought would have happened. The story is well written and entertaining. I would highly recommend this book as a great read.
This series has just been delightful. High and Penelope have a whirlwind courtship that leads to love and marriage. Unlike the others their’s is a chance meeting that leads to instant attraction. Darcy Burke captures the wonders of love and romance and delights her readers.
