Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, emotional historical and contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations. Join her Reader Club at http://www.darcyburke.com/readerclub.
A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids who seem to have inherited the writing gene, two Bengal cats and a third cat named after a fruit. In her “spare” time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say “no,” but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.
One Night of Surrender was a great continuation of the Wicked Dukes Club series featuring a delightful second chance at love romance.
Valentine Fairfax the Duke of Eastleigh never forgot Isabelle, the daughter of a head of college at Oxford and Valentine’s first brush with forbidden love. But after ten years Valentine discovers Isabelle is the governess for his friend’s daughters, the same friend he just gave permission to stay with him while their townhouse is being renovated. Encountering Isabelle after all these years has Valentine questioning everything as he longs to pick up where they left off.
Valentine is the co-owner of the Wicked Dukes tavern with the Duke of Colehaven, the subject of the first book in the series. The duo have a fantastic friendship and I enjoyed their scenes together. After a terrible first marriage, Valentine has no desire to remarry despite knowing he will need to eventually due to his title. Upon learning what Valentine went through in his first marriage, I completely understood why he would be averse to doing it again as the man was put through the ringer.
Isabelle is an incredibly intelligent woman having been tutored in all manner of subjects by her father. I loved that Isabelle taught the two girls she looked after subjects that aren’t typically reserved for women rather than sticking to the traditional ones. I thought Isabelle’s dream of opening a school for girls was an admirable one and something that seemed perfectly suited to her character.
When Isabelle and Valentine meet again, Isabelle is determined to avoid Valentine as much as possible while he is thrilled at the prospect of having Isabelle in his life again. There are several scenes where they’re alone where you can feel the sexual tension as they fight the attraction that’s obviously still there. The chemistry between them truly was phenomenal and when their relationship progresses, it’s quite steamy and very well done. One of my favorite aspects of their relationship was how much Valentine respected Isabelle’s wishes and that he never pushed for more than she was willing to give. Isabelle is the one who initiates most of what happens between them which I loved. The way the pair finally find their way forward was well done and fit well for them as a couple.
One Night of Surrender was the first book I’ve read by Darcy Burke and I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for some short, fantastic historical romances.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
I received a copy of this book from the author and publishers in exchange for a honest review. This in no way affects my opinion of the story or the characters.
Darcy Burke is an author I've read quite a lot, and in my experience it's usually a hit or a miss. This is a hit for sure. I absolutely adored this second-chance romance between an independent, bluestocking governess and a sweet, kind and charming Duke. And no readers, he isn't a prolific rake sleeping with everything that moves - *cue gasp*.
Valentine and Isabelle first meet in Oxford (or some school I forgot), where he was a student and she was the daughter of the warden. They became friends and one-time lovers in school, and continued to hold that tendre for each other. They parted ways, simply because there is no future for a warden's daughter and a future duke - or so the young, naive lovers thought at the time.
10 years later they meet again, when a friend of Valentine's (some creepy dude) moves in with his daughters and governess in tow. 50 points to Gryffindor for guessing who the governess is! That's right, Isabelle! Hooray!
From here begins the second-chance romance between our MC's. It's quite adorable to say the least, and fleshed out enough that you connect with both characters individually rather than just as a couple. I loved that while Valentine wished to initiate a liason or was tempted to test the waters with Isabelle, he instantly respected her wish to maintain distance between them. It was obvious that she was doing so out of what she thought was right, but he never pushed or tried to seduce her into giving in. Consent and respect FTW!
The pacing and the writing style is very easy to read so you don't feel overwhelmed or wrought out at any point. The secondary characters are wonderful as well and I can't wait to read about Val's sister!
This is a perfect novella when you're looking for something sweet, cute and fluffy to deal with that latest GOT episode! Go for it! :D
Series: Wicked Dukes Club #2 Publication Date: 4/30/19 Number of Pages: 170
Ten years ago, when Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh was attending Oxford, he met Isabelle, the lovely and intelligent daughter of the warden of Merton College. Though it was forbidden for the students to fraternize with the wardens and their families, these two got to be friends – and more. When they parted, neither ever thought to see the other again, though they thought of each other often during the years.
Val’s very unhappy marriage ended when his wife died in childbirth and he doubts he’ll ever marry again even though his grandmother is insistent that he does. Just imagine his shock when he greets his newly arrived houseguests and finds that their governess is the now widowed Isabelle. He can’t imagine how she came to be a governess.
Isabelle spends a lot of time trying to avoid Val because she cannot afford for their relationship to start up again because she could too easily lose her position and her reputation. Besides, she has learned that she cannot depend on any man to take care of her, she must be independent and take care of herself. She is still very drawn to Val, but she can’t let anything come of it. However, Val has other plans.
Just being near Isabelle makes Val feel alive. He knows he should honor her wishes and leave her be, but he just can’t. Somehow, he just can’t control himself around her. He constantly thinks of her and what she needs and what will make her happy and then he just arranges for them to happen.
This is a wonderfully delightful second-chance romance with two very likable people. You’ll be rooting for them the whole way through. I would have loved for them to have married earlier – or have the book be just a tad longer – and have Isobelle be expecting at the end. However, this is a continuing series, so maybe, we’ll hear more about that in future books.
I definitely recommend this novella. It is a short, lovely and romantic read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5/5 but rounded down because I don’t think it was very memorable. It was actually pretty low angst for what the setup was, and I liked the second chance!! But there was only one sex scene which was confusing and the passion never got beyond a high simmer. I need that second chance to be overflowing with the pining with the yearning with the emotions. And again I do enjoy a good low angst time and I can’t even say I wanted more suffering, it’s just a cute fine read but I think it was surface level.
I enjoyed the mild Valentine’s Day vibes and appreciated the third act and the meddling sister/dowager. I’m happy that Val got a clue pretty fast, as well as Isabelle, and I’m happy there wasn’t another lady he was supposed to be courting. His late wife was kinda confusing but overall I thought she was going to be worse which was nice if a little sad.
I did also pay $3.99 and personally going back in time I probably wouldn’t? It would be a different story it it were on KU or something you know? I read it for the podcast and definitely DON’T regret it, but it’s more like…would I do that again?
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶️🌶️*/5
*one detailed but relatively short sex scene
Spoiler: I’m curious to see if they end up having a child!
The thing I love about the first two books in this series is that both hero’s are not rakes! Darcy Burke never disappoints with her hero’s but I especially liked Val. He was a lovely hero, kind, and honorable. Isabelle was perfect for Val. She was smart and independent. I don’t usually like second chance romances but this absolutely worked for me mainly because the hero wasn’t a rake. I would liked to have learned about their marriages more but it did t detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. I’m really looking forward to the next books in the series.
ONE NIGHT OF SURRENDER by Darcy Burke is book Two in the Wicked Dukes Club Series. This is the story of Isabelle Cortland and Valentine 'Val' Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh. I have read the previous book, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Isabelle and Val meet when Val is at Oxford college where her father is the head of and sparks fly. Even though they are forbidden due the do enter into a romantic relationship. But of course due to their different levels in life they cannot be. So both go on to marry other but neither were far from the other in thoughts. Now in the their present day, Isabelle is a widower trying to earn money due to her husband's wasting it away. Isabelle also is looking to open her own school but for now is a governess. Val to is a widower whose wife cheated on him but died in childbirth. Now he is cynical on relationships. When Val invites his friend and family to stay with him for awhile he is socked to see Isabelle. Isabelle needs to keep her name 'clean' if she wants to be a head mistress so she tries to avoid Val. Val tries to stand by Isabelle's request but their feelings are just to much. Enjoyed their story.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 This is turning out to be a wonderful series. Between Darcy and Erica I don’t think I can say which I prefer so far , they are doing a cracking job . This is The Duke of Eastleigh’s book , Valentine Fairfax. He’s a widower, with an unhappy marriage behind him ,the last thing he wants is to be back on the marriage mart , try telling his grandmother that though, she is a law unto herself and no one tells her no . When a friend moves in with his children and their governess Isabelle Cortland , he discovers the woman he left 10 years earlier ,now reduced to working for a living . Can they make good second time round . Wonderful writing, brilliant storyline, and characters . Can’t fault this book , it’s written as only Darcy can , some tension a little amusement and a lot of emotion. I received an Arc copy of this book and I chose to post this review
Isabelle Cortland is in London and is entering the home of Valentine Fairfax, the Duke of Eastleigh, she is praying that he is not there. She is governess to Baron Barkley's two young daughters and when the townhouse the Baron rented was not ready, his good friend Eastleigh offered to have them stay with him. Isabelle knows Val - intimately - and if he recognizes her, she will be ruined and any hope of opening a school will be lost. It has been ten years since she last saw him, so maybe he won't remember her...
Valentine "Val" Fairfax, the Duke of Eastleigh is shocked to see Isabelle - she is even more beautiful than he remembers - and remember her he does - often. When they are "introduced" by Lord Barkley, he plays along with her ruse and pretends he doesn't know her, but he has questions and will get answers!
Isabelle and Val have a history, her father was the Warden of a college at Oxford and she met Val and the two formed a friendship and eventually became lovers - but she never expected the son of a Duke to marry her and no promises were ever made. When Val left school, they both married other people. When her husband died, she learned he gambled away her dowry and she needed to find employment. She took the job as governess, but she dreams of opening her own school for girls. She is terrified that the Baron will learn of her past and she will lose her position. She had hoped to avoid him, but now she knows they will have to talk.
Val has never forgotten Isabelle, he left school and married, but his marriage was far from happy and he has no desire to repeat the experience. They talk and he learns of her past, he wants to help her, but she is adamant that he continues to pretend they don't know each other. He is not happy, but agrees.
When his grandmother and sister become involved and the Baroness arrives with a new governess in tow - Isabelle's life takes changes she never expected. Val knows that he should leave Isabelle alone - but he cannot walk away from her again. He offers her a job as companion to his sister Viola and later finds her a position at the lending library. She gratefully accepts, but continues to look for another teaching position.
When an adventure with Viola leads to a confrontation with Val - Isabelle knows she has to move on, but can Val let her walk away again?
This was a delightful second chance romance story about two people who were meant to be, but who didn't believe they could be together and each suffered for it. It is well written, flows nicely, has a lot of emotion, wonderful secondary characters, some light moments and a truly romantic ending. This is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series, but it could be read as a stand alone title with no problems.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me.*
He doesn’t need anyone and she can only rely on herself. Ten years after their last personal contact, Valentine and Isabelle meet each other again. They have never forgotten each other and are now two sides of the same coin. They are both intelligent, independent, loyal, loving and strong. Their previous marriages have helped to form their current position on remaining single. However they can’t help being attracted to each other and Val can’t help trying to assist Isabelle when she looses her job. His grandmother and sister also do their bit to lend a hand. I like all of the characters in this book. Val’s grandmother comes across as grumpy and aloof at first, but for family it’s just a facade. Val’s sister is welcoming, quirky, independent and totally unaware that her brother knows all about her secret pursuits. The family that Isabelle works for have lovely daughters, a jealous mother and a father that offers too much. Darcy Burke has created a wonderful story about second chances, changing your mind and seizing the moment. The characters interactions feel familiar and real. The dialogue helps to give the reader a complete picture of their personal qualities. It is the perfect story for unwinding and relaxing.
Lovely second-chance romance that takes its time re-uniting two former lovers who haven't seen each other in ten years. After disastrous marriages, neither Valentine nor Isabelle feel like trusting another person anytime soon. But when fate throws them together after ten years, they discover that neither has ever forgotten the other. But letting go of the past is not easy...
I really enjoyed this one. There was almost no drama, the romance develops gradually, and both Val and Isabelle are just lovely people who deserve their happily ever after. A perfect comfort read!

My first Darcy Burke's - and because I'm curious with this series after having a wonderful time of reading Erica Ridley's books, The Wild Wynchesters which then led to One Night for Seduction, the first book in Wicked Dukes Club series.
This one is rather shorter novel and things move rather quickly, including the resolution of Isabelle's employment issue. Val and Isabelle were being described as previously involved, ten years prior at Oxford.
This is probably meant for Val and Isabelle to easily pick up where they left off, but for me, since it was rather mostly mentioned and not shown, it didn't have strong enough foundation.
Also they both quickly change their stance - Val over marriage and Isabelle over the need to head her own school.
Nonetheless, it was sweet and quick read - wasn't too steamy for my preference as well. I could believe that Val and Isabelle still had feelings for one another and I wish them both happiness in their marriage.
This second book in The Wicked Duke Club series is as entertaining and enjoyable as the first one One Night For Seduction by Mrs Erica Ridley. Mrs Darcy Burke crafted two wonderful main characters, from Isabelle Cortland who was able to find a way out of her predicament when she found herself widowed and Valentine Fairfax who created a club with his friend open to anyone despite their society rank. Each faced disappointing marriage, probably because they were not fully devoted to it, having left a piece of their heart to another. But after a decade of being estranged, they have buried deeply their feeling and they tried to leave the past where it should be, in the past but their wounded hearts have a mind of their own and decide otherwise. I do loved too the Dowager Duchess and Valentine’s sister, Viola, they added to the charm of this story. It was beautiful story of a second chance at love for two persons who where too young to understand what they had when they first met and how love is not a servitude but a sentiment that help you accept the other and not change it.
Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, never forgot Isabelle, the intelligent, witty and forbidden daughter of a head of Merton College Oxford. However, since suffering a disastrous marriage to an unfaithful wife, the duke has vowed never to succumb to temptation again. Until the day he invites a friend & his family to stay in his London townhouse & discovers the governess is the one woman who still haunts his dreams. An enthralling captivating second chance romance that I read in one sitting. Val & Isabelle are both strong characters & so perfect for each other, they fell in love a decade ago but parted only to be thrown together again. I also loved the secondary characters especially Viola (her story should be brilliant) & the cantankerous but all seeing Dowager Duchess. A page turning often humorous long novella the second in the series. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
4.5 stars Val, Duke of Eastleigh first met Isabelle Cortland the years ago. Neither of them have forgotten their one night of surrender. This was an engaging story of two people who had not achieved the happiness and fulfilment that they had experienced ten years ago with each other. Isabelle was a very intelligent woman but knew nothing of the so-called feminine talents like watercolours, musical ability or needlework. Her desire was to be a headmistress of a girl’s school. However, her meeting with Val, has her reassessing what she wants to do with her life. I liked the close relationship Isabelle had with her two pupils and I loved how Val looked out for Isabelle and the way he brought the two girls to see her. Their relationship was as strong as ever and I enjoyed reading how they progressed.
One Night of Surrender (Wicked Dukes Club #2) by Darcy Burke
Darcy Burke dreams up some of the best heroes and heroines. They charm as much as they frustrate, yet it's the skill in which she exposes their imperfections, that make them captivating to read. One Night of Surrender is a passionate tale. Valentine and Isa are two ships passing in the night until fate throws them a lifeline. Will they survive the dark waters ahead or wind up shipwrecked on Heartbreak Island? Burke packs a mountain of turbulence into a mesmerizing love story.
Ten years earlier, when a student, Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh had shared a night with Isabelle Highmore, the intelligent daughter of an Oxford College warden. "They’d stolen their one night together and knew it would have to last them forever." Now they've met again. Isabelle's a widow, Isabelle Cortland, and the governess for the children of a friend. Both have been married before, both marriages were untenable. Their meeting is a complete surprise. The attraction between them fairly lifts of the page. When Isabelle is discharged from her position (think jealousy, followed by unwanted attention by the children's father) she turns to seeking a job, any job, even as a barmaid at of all places The Wicked Duke, owned by, you've guessed it, Val and his friend the Duke of Colehaven. That idea doesn't sit happily with Val. He takes charge, or attempts to. What we see is the struggles by both Val and Isabelle where their relationship is concerned. Isabelle wants independence. Val wants? Well Val is conflicted about what he wants, apart from Isabelle in some fashion, except maybe marriage. This all made for an exciting storyline, but even after a second reading I was not entirely satisfied and have questions about their relationship when they were younger. Was Val happy to have one night with Isabelle and leave? Was Isabelle really ok with that? Was dukely duty a consideration? Val and said to her, "he didn’t wish to wed for several more years." And now, Val it appears is concerned but not willing to commit and Isabelle still wants her independence. Sudden steamy interludes are becoming a habit, with Isabelle more often than not the protagonist. I guess 'you can't fight true love' is the message. Or maybe that the love they have is enduring even if they don't realize it and after all 'love will conquer all.'
ARC KINDLY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR DARCY BURKE!! Valentine/Val Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh fell in love with Isabella Cortland 10 years ago. They had one night of passionate love making. Only to marry other people. Both are widow and widower now.
Isabella's deceased husband has left her in poverty. She has been working as a governess for the last 5 years. Lord Barkley her employer with his two daughters Beatrice and Caroline are moving to London, but there townhouse is not ready to move into. So they move in for a fortnight with his old friend Val the Duke of Eastleigh.
Val and Isabella are reunited after 10 years. They are still in love with each other and they have another night of passion
I liked the story but it was a bit boring. There is not enough of descriptions of the characters, there clothes, food what the room looked like. Nothing to paint a picture in my mind. There was just nothing new or anything to make me feel as though I were there looking through a mirror as the story plays out. It a good story the dialog is good between the characters. Its just need more to pull the reader into the story.
I have been reading Historical Romance since the early 1980. It seems to me now that HR stories feel more like Contemporary Romance. The female characters are older like Isabella 28 widowed and looking for a profession to work in. She read more like a modern day female. I will say it again I am sick of reading about Spinsters!! Whatever happen to the young beautiful ladies entering into the marriage mart? Every female heroine is a spinster these days.
One Night of Surrender by Darcy Burke is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series. It is a fast-paced novella that you can enjoy as a standalone book if you haven't read the first in the series.
Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh has known Isabelle Cortland since his college days when her father was the warden there. They were instantly attracted to each other and before going their separate ways they had one glorious night of passion together.
Ten years later both Valentine and Isabelle have married other people. Both marriages were unhappy ones, and both ended when their spouses passed away. Left in a lot of debt Isabelle has taken a position as a governess. She saves as much as she can of her wage to use to fund a school for underprivileged children. She will be the head teacher there.
Valentine takes in houseguests who are waiting for some final work to be done on the home they are renting in London before they can move in. Isabelle is the governess of that family and she is horrified when she realises that she will be staying in Valentine's home. She hopes that she can keep herself hidden from him because the last thing she needs is for him to realise who she is. Will he tell her employer that he knows her and about their night of passion. She can't afford to lose her position so she does all she can to keep out of his sight.
Her plan doesn't work though and when Valentine realises who Isabelle is he can't believe she is working as a governess. The attraction he felt for her all that time ago is still very much there and visa versa. He wants to fight it because after a very unhappy marriage he doesn't ever want to marry again. She wants to fight it because she wants to keep her independence and see her dream come to fruition of opening the school. Will they be able to keep away from each other, or perhaps they might just have another one of those glorious nights of passion again.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I love second chance at love plots. This one was particularly nice because they hadn't had a relationship before that ended up badly. They just had a mutual night of passion together before saying their goodbyes. I liked that the only angst that was felt when they met up again was Isabelle's worry over her reputation rather than her having any bitterness towards Valentine and visa versa. It's a lovely feel-good story that had me smiling. One particular scene taking place in the Wicked Duke Inn which involved Isabelle and Valentine's sister had me chuckling. With all the bad things happening in the world it's nice to read a book that helps you escape reality and gives you a good laugh. This book definitely did that.
Well-educated governess Isabelle Cortland thought never to again lay eyes on Valentine Fairfax, the Duke of Eastleigh, after they shared a night of passion 10 years ago during Val's days at Oxford, where Isabelle's father was a warden. Now she and her charges and employer are guests in Eastleigh's London townhouse for a fortnight during which she hopes to avoid him. Isabelle has long dreamed of opening a school for girls and she can't risk her reputation now, not even for the man she's never forgotten.
After wading through a terrible marriage with a wife who wasn't faithful to him, Val has been wary of the temptations of women. He won't risk love again and yet when the woman he's never gotten over turns up in his house it seems like a gift and he doesn't want to squander it. Things have always been different with Isabelle and if there's a chance for them to make each other happy, maybe they should take it. They both just have to decide to take that risk.
I usually have mixed feelings about second chance romances because I just wind up feeling sad about all the wasted time they could've been together and weren't. These two loved each other since they first met but it took them ten years and much heartbreak to realize it and I think that made the timing work. When they were reunited, it rapidly became apparent to both of them that they couldn't be apart again and that was lovely. They were both vulnerable and both took a chance on risking their hearts anyway and questioning what they thought their dreams were.
We're introduced to a couple more characters in this one that I think we'll be seeing later on in the series and I can't wait. I loved this one and I think we're off to a great start so far.
Mrs. Isabelle Cortland is employed by Lord Barkley and his wife as governess for their daughters Beatrice, 13, and Caroline, 10. Lord Barkley, his daughters, and Isabelle are temporarily staying at the home of Valentine Fairfax, the Duke of Eastleigh, while renovations are being completed on the Barkley home.
Isabelle is hoping that she will not encounter Valentine during their stay. Ten years ago, the two of them spent a night of passion and Isabelle has never forgotten that night. Isabelle is the daughter of an Oxford head and extremely well educated by her father. Her dream is to one day open a school for girls.
However, when Valentine and Isabelle do meet, they both know they are still attracted to one another. Isabelle had been married, but when her husband passed several years ago having gambled away the family funds, she had no choice but to take a position as a governess. Valentine had also been unhappily married and his wife has passed away.
When Isabelle meets Valentine’s sister, Viola, and their crotchety grandmother, she is impressed with Viola’s friendliness and independence. She also says she wants to introduce Isabelle to her friends. She can’t help but be somewhat intimated by their grandmother.
One day, Isabelle learns she is to be replace by another governess because Lady Barkley is jealous of her and wants her out. Eager to find a new position as soon as possible, she applies as a barmaid called the Wicked Duke owned by Valentine and his friend, the Duke of Colehaven, and is accepted. However, this does not go down well with Valentine and he steps in to make some changes.
Is there a way that these two people can be together? They are so much in love.
I liked this book very much and found it to be yet another delighted historical romance by a talented author.

One Night of Surrender is the second instalment in the Wicked Dukes Club Series. This is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading from Darcy Burke, and will most definitely will not be the last. I so enjoy the language and customs that you find in a historical romance, and this book had all the qualities i typically look for.
Valentine (aka Val) Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh is the other notorious duke of the Wicked Dukes Club. He has a second chance encounter with Isabelle (née Highmore) Cortland, a woman that has continuously crossed his mind throughout his marriage and since their shared night of passion well over a decade ago. He’s not looking to join the marriage mart, considering his last attempt at marriage. Isabelle has also experienced a failed marriage, that almost left her destitute. With that experience, she’s discovered that she can only depend on herself and is fairly independent.
Isabelle is striving to become a headmistress to her own school, but is employed as a governess to guests of Val upon their encounter. The connection they once shared is still there, but will they both surrender to their desire?
““Surrender leads to disappointment.” Surrender led them to each other. Attraction. Temptation. Surrender.”
If you are looking to read a great historical romance read this series. Thus far, I can attest that it is a MUST read series. I’d like to thank the author and Social Butterfly PR for generously providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. One Night Of Surrender by Darcy Burke will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ELITE!!!
As mentioned in the Erica Ridley review of the Wicked Dukes Club # 1 - which was written by Ridley, I love both these writers very much. Besides the fact that in real life they are best friends, together in a joint venture like this, the sky is literally the limit and I for one cannot wait for the rest of the books. This story consists of Isabelle Courtland who once was in a high society position due to her incredibly intelligent and well known father. She is surrounded by the Oxford University people, and is tutored by her brilliant father, so its natural that she would follow in his footsteps. There she meets Valentine Fairfax, a Duke. She tries to fight, as does he, the attraction between them but one night, that doesn't work so well. She was forced into a marriage by her father, and he was forced into marriage by Dowager, his grandmother, both desperately unhappy, until they meet again 10 years later, him as a Duke and club owner, and she as a governess to the small girls of the family residing with him for 2 weeks. Following this chance meeting, comes a clash of wills, and feelings, determination, so much so that it literally leaves you reeling. The characters are very complex, but again, not misleading, which is refreshing, and I loved the journey that these two characters have read. By the time you have read this no 2 book, you will hear a bit about Cole, who is his partner in the Club. If you haven't read it yet, you should read it in order if you can. Wicked Dukes Club # 1 called One night of Seduction by Erica Ridley.
What I have read so far of this series (2 books) has been enjoyable and very very interesting. First, there have been no rakes and scoundrels, a refreshing change that. Both the hero’s have been very good kind men, infact too good to be true; Second, the stories have been simple and crafted with a lot of history and facts of that period which makes for a very interesting read and a slight detour from the romance genre.
In this book too, as in the first the protagonists are good, kind hearted and super intelligent and yet again we have a simple story that is well told.
We had Diana previously who was a Maths wiz and now there is Isabelle who could quite easily be a professor at Oxford herself, if women were allowed to do that back then. I am hoping that all the heroines will be very strong characters in this series, and I think from what I have read so far, they will be.
Unbelievably good heroes and strong intelligent women make for a perfect romance read and this one is no exception. The flow of the story, from one author to the next, does not change and one feels as if you are reading the same narrative continued from book 1.
Kudos to Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley for achieving that and a big thank you for giving us a ‘different’ series to look forward to.
‘May’ may be too far for me to patiently wait for book 3.
One Night of Surrender by Darcy Burke Wicked Dukes Club #2
What a delightful second chance at a HEA Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh and Isabelle Highmore Cortland are given in this, the second book, of a wonderful historical romance series! Ten years before this book begins Val and Isabelle met and became friends in Oxford. Knowing a duke and the daughter of a warden of the university were not suited for a forever kind of relationship they did get to know one another well and then one night...became quite a bit closer. That one night stayed with both of them over the years – even when both married (rather unhappily) and tried to move on with their lives.
And then…
Isabelle arrives in Val’s home as governess to daughters of a friend staying in Val’s home. Of course they remember one another and wonder...what if...and perhaps if only...and other things. The question now is whether or not they can relinquish their unhappy pasts and find a way to be together in the future.
Did I enjoy this book? Definitely Do I want to read more in this series? Without a doubt
I have seen a number of names dropped in the first two books that left me wanting to know if perhaps those mentioned would have books of their own AND have to say book three is one I am definitely looking forward to reading...soon!
Thank you to both Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley for the ARC as they are both writing alternate books in the series ~ This is my honest review.
A story of a long ago encounter that never was forgotten by either party. Years ago, Valentine, Duke of Eastleigh had experienced one amazing night with Isabelle Cortland, the daughter of the head of the college. Since then he had been through a terrible marraige and was determined never to get caught in that trap again. But then he literally ran into Isabelle. Isabelle had married after that encounter but was now a widow and left with no money, so she went to work as a governess for the two girls of Lord Barkley. Having renovations done on his townhome, they stayed at Val's house. What are the chances? She intended to stay far away. As fate would have it, almost after her arrival she met him unexpectedly in the corridor. "Isabelle?" She was older of course, and far more beautiful than he remembered. He blinked, closing his eyes for a moment, but when he opened them she was still there." paraphrased but he was astonished and the spark was still there! Could their love rekindle from so long ago? Darcy Burke always writes such wonderful stories that pull me in quickly. Such a heartwarming second chance emotional story with characters that grab you and have you desperately wanting them to find their happy ending. The secondary characters are full of life and bring a lot to this tale and I cannot wait until the next book in this series! This series is an amazing collaberation between two brilliant authors of historical romance!!
Can I just say that I love Darcy Burke's books? I enjoy her writing style and she can write characters that speak to me and are the kind I can relate to. I was so happy to find out that she and Erica Ridley decided to collaborate on this series. The heroines so far have not been the average HR heroines and they have interests that weren't so usual for their time.
The main characters of the book are Valentine Fairfax, the Duke of Eastleigh, and Isabelle, whom I believe doesn't have a title when we first met her. They spend a night together a decade ago and later went on their separate ways. Both got married to other people and their spouses were pieces of work, for different reasons. Now, their spouses are dead and Isabelle is working as a governess, while Valentine owns the Wicked Dukes club. Isabelle has plans to open a school for impoverished girls and she is trying to find the money for it, but won't accept Valentine's offers and willingness to help for various reasons all of which you will find when you read the book. I liked that she stood on her ground and did whatever she could to make it through. She has set her mind on something and she will do whatever she can to see it happening.
To be completely honest, my favorite character in the book was Valentine's sister. She is a very interesting character and I hope that she will get a book one day. Overall, the book was enjoyable and I would recommend it.
I received a free, advanced copy of this book as a member of the author's Review Crew. This is my unbiased and voluntary review. This second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series is about the second owner of the Wicked Dukes tavern, Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh. It is a second chance story.
Valentine and Isabelle had been friends (and one time with benefits) when Val was at Oxford, where Isabelle's father was warden of Merton College. Ten years have passed. Both had married badly (because they didn't marry each other). Val's wife was a wanton, who had died in childbirth with another man's child and Isabelle's husband had left her in debt. Both have declared that they would never marry again.
Now Mrs. Isabelle Cortland, works for Lord Barkley and his wife as governess for their two daughters. A visit to London, has them staying at the home of Lord Barley's friend the Duke of Eastley. Val is shocked when he sees Isabelle, but agrees to keep their acquaintance a secret, so she doesn't loose her position. However, when Lady Barkley, out of jealousy, replaces her with another governess, all bets are off. It takes Val's sister, Viola, and their grandmother to get the two to admit that they still love the other. But does Isabelle have it in her to be a duchess? Will we find out what Viola's secret is in a future book?
Delightful characters, witty dialogue and an enticing plot make this book a fun read.
