This literally gave me all the feels. It's stunning, beautiful, informative, entertaining, smart, sad, frightening and downright scary all at once.

Basically, this book contains lots of wonderfully illustrated infographics on women's live all over the world. But it's so much more than pretty diagrams only. The various chapters (such as "Health", "Birthrights", "Work" and "Poverty") look deeply into certain issues. Men are a big part of this book, too, often in contrast to women's conditions. Moreover, it's a work on general urgent problems such as discrimination, globalisation, climate change, migration, concerning both men and women - seriously, there is so much more in here than I'd thought.

Plus, it's highly intersectional. Most topics don't regard women as one fixed group only but go into details by comparing classes, ethnicities, sexuality, age, living conditions (urban vs. rural), wealth and so on. Highly inspiring.

I learned a lot reading this, way more than I'd hoped for. Some things were astonishing in a positive way (like the fact I mentioned in an update, on France being the first country legalising homosexuality as early as 1791), some were very scary and sad like:

- the marry-your-rapist-laws. Some countries offer the rapist to go scot free if he marries his victim. THERE ARE NO WORDS.
- the fact that 17 of the U.S. states do not have a legal minimum age of marriage, which means Afghanistan has a tougher law on child marriage than parts of the United States. One "argument" why the legal age of marriage should remain low/not defined is that otherwise, it would increase the number of children born out of wedlock due to so many teenage pregnancies. Way to solve that problem, jeez (I'd invest in more, better and earlier sex ed, but what do I know).
- the fact that each CEO of the 5 largest fashion brands earnmore money within 4 (!) days (!!) than an average women working in a Bangaldesh garnment factory earns in her lifetime.

Overall a higly enjoyable and highly recommended read with lots of information to think and talk about (I feel like I read half the book out loud to my partner because I had to share). Plus, it's also very beautiful - a win on all accounts.

Note: I read the most recent (pub. October 2018), revised 5th edition of this wonderful publication.

I was somewhat surprised by the content of this book. I have seen similar books, and when I opened this one, “The Women’s Atlas” I didn’t expect it to be only about women’s suffering around the world. I expected it to be more a balanced look at women in different societies and perhaps highlight some women leaders, artists, and other influential women in the world.

However, it is an atlas of sexism and women's social and political issues, like domestic violence, child marriage, honor killings, sexual violence, unpaid labor, wage gaps, legal protection (or lack thereof). It’s clear that it’s a project to highlight feminist issues. This is not bad; the topic is important, however I think the title could have better reflected its real focus because such a broad reaching title, “The Women’s Atlas” suggests that it's about women's experiences in general and that women’s experiences are defined by their suffering. That’s bleak.

My main criticism is that the book starts out by saying “all states are patriarchal”. That is a very extreme claim to make and to just throw in as an unsupported assumption is a questionable way to start a pop-statistics book. Some of the text blurbs in the book show similar assumptions (like that many beauty products contain toxic chemicals such as lead. Really? Which beauty products?) However the data visualizations are more legitimate and based on credible sources (footnoted in the back of the book). I think less of a political bias would make the book stronger because each reader would decide for themselves how to grapple with the data about the beauty industry rather than feel that the author is subtly manipulating them to see this industry negatively.

As a book focused on summarizing data insights, it’s interesting. It is limited in how much it can portray so many pages contain only a few highlights - ranges by continent, by region and a few countries from those regions.

Some interesting insights for instance: in most countries, a higher percentage of women than men approve of wife beating.

48% of migrant workers in the world are women (just thought about this because so many people are surprised that I moved countries for work as single woman; this is not rare.)

22% of men in the US have a preference for having a daughter over a son (49% prefer a son, and 28% say it doesn’t matter). In comparison 33% of women prefer a daughter, 31% prefer a son. 36% say it doesn’t matter).

Only 8% of women use condoms as their main form of contraceptive, 19% use female sterilization (wow!), only 2% use male sterilization (remaining methods include the pill, IUD, traditional methods, injectables).

Higher education for women (in the US) is associated with a lower divorce rate.

Disclaimer: I am a Geographer and spend a lot of my student/working live on visualizing data and on thinking about how to visualize data. With that said I have some serious issues with the book:

the book is not clear, if it just wants to tell a story with data or if it wants to actually show a story via data. Now it does both and it doesn't do the book any good. Furthermore, the visualisation is not very good and the template for the maps is not innovative. I would have wished for more innovative visualisation approaches. I also do not agree with the colour choices of the author (an entire page in red, in other cases the different hues were different to distinguish). Another issue I have is that the maps/graphs sometimes contain too much information, in other cases, more information could have been transmitted.

On the plus side: the information provided is interesting and I appreciate that women are the focus of this work, contrary to many other atlases.

I loved this book because it taught me SO much that I didn’t know! I have been very into the idea of gender equality my whole life, but I never knew how bad it was in some places. This encouraged me to stand up for women’s rights even more! 💗

Dates and facts not always clear, and some terms should be explained. Otherwise interesting book about facts of women´s life all over the world, with great layout. Wish there were more Austrian facts in the German edition.

In short: I liked the book. I liked the infographics and there is pretty sure some new information for everyone.

Still, the data is presented inconsistently and is very specific. By the end, I'm still not sure if the limited view is due to the data available or the opinion the author is trying to present. As an example, I'd be really interested in what changes/laws/interventions have led to what changes in the data, but there were very few pages of change over time considered and the reasons are completely missing. Another example: a comment like "USA ... still no female president" and "Russia ... still no female president" sounded very clumsy to me when comparing the history of the two countries also in terms of gender equality.

There is much more I could criticize, but the bottom line is that it is an easy read that presents a lot of information in a very intuitive way and invites discussion of these issues. There is probably something unknown hidden for everyone.

The information supplied along with the maps are remarkable. The reader will instantly be able to see how women rate globally on issues that confront all females. The topics reach the gamut - health, domestic violence, work, contraception, families, birthrights, body politics, higher education, poverty, and women in government, feminist organizing, and many more. Even though the data is a tad dated the alarming disproportionate statistics between men and women; rich and poor; and educated and non-educated should wake you up and have you shouting for revolution.

This book was absolutely phenomenal, such a good follow up from its predecessor. I loved the fact that new sections were added because that tells me that Joni Seager listens to her critics. I personally thought this book was absolutely flawless, a real eye opener, 5 deserved stars. One kickass factual book for feminists.

I.loved.this.book. The data was presented beautifully and it's nice to see data just on women's issues. I feel like I have a better understanding of things that affect gender equity worldwide. I especially enjoyed the data showing gender equity's connection to the HIV epidemic in Africa--it validated feelings I had about the subpar training on this issue I received as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Excelente libro...
