Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.

Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he's not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.

Bill The Vampire Returns

After a two year break author monkey Rick Gualtieri has penned another great tale in Bill’s world. Two years after the events in The Last Coven the story picks up with everyone boringly normal, still snarky as hell but normal.

Normal will only get you so far and Strange Days is by no means a normal or boring story. With characters that are loved and those we love to hate Gualtieri delivers in this all new series that makes nerds cool again.

I have been hoping for so long!

Although, I loved the way the Tome of Bill series ended, I still hoped the author would find a way to bring back the stories in this world. I was not disappointed! Bill and the gang are back. Facing a new'ish Big Bad, though a lot has changed, some things remain the same. This was a great setup book for the next in the series. I am so glad Bill is back

I have read all of the Bill of the Dead series. Once I knew this one was on the way I had to pre-order. Once again another lively romp with Bill and friends, waiting breathlessly to see what happens with Sally.

Thanks Rick, its not like i needed to sleep

Every so often an author comes along and releases books that demand to be read in one sitting. This is one of those. Purchase this on a Friday, or your ass is going to drag at work the next day.

That said, Great read, happy to be back in the world of Bill again. Great way to get going on a new adventure with the characters you have come to love and loathe. Rick, you are a magnificent writer-monkey bastard. Get back to work. Need more.

"We closed the door, destroyed The Source. This shit doesn’t exist anymore. Except that, despite my brain’s insistence to the contrary, it apparently did."

A wickedly funny return to the world of Bill the Vampire! So much fun! (sorry, just working on my character-limited Amazon review headline)

OK that high-pitched SQUEEE some of you may have heard a couple of days ago was me reading the above passage in Rick Gualtieri's "Strange Days", the 2nd series featuring everyone's favorite occult nerdling Bill aka Bill the Vampire aka Bill Who Saved Us All! After literally devouring (seriously, me teeth are ruined) the first 8!! full-length stories back in (insert month here he reminded himself… I forgot, didn't I?), I could hardly wait to continue with this crew despite my self-imposed waiting period to purchase any more fictional works of mass destruction from the aforementioned author… who I mentioned, you know, afore. And if you're a fanboy/girl/your life/your call like me, then you will absolutely adore this book! Oh and if you're curious: yes, I did kind of ignore the author's own "recommended reading order" list because I just HAD to know about (waves hand vaguely)... I blame whoever makes these awesome covers for that btw!

Sure, one might argue (but shouldn't), the book starts off a tad bit slow in terms of the kersplatty action we had grown used to in the original Bill Octology, but that was to be expected. After all, most of the characters from those books were either killed off (in a way) or had been utterly depowered ("more like deflowered, am I right?" "Shut up, Tom!"). And let's be honest: it's not exactly kosher to weigh up an ending of one series where the war to end all wars (of this type) was happening against a new series that has to essentially start off as a family reunion, dating update and a quick game of "spot the asshole" (hint: there are several).

So, yes, my point is it takes a while to get enough of a crew up and running again to, um, get running again. But oh when it does, wowzers! And there's enough weird stuff going back and forth, up and down, cats and dogs living together… um, where was I? Oh yeah… bottom-line is that the whole fantasy realm comes rushing in like true fans could only hope, want and probably sacrifice a goat or two for! Confusion, combustion, spells and treachery galore become in no time flat the rule of the day! It's like Thanksgiving all packaged together in a neat albeit at the moment very bizarre fantasy extravaganza, but without your racist Uncle being at the table drinking all the gin in a coffee cup!

And one point simply cannot be disputed, namely, that Gualtieri's writing continues to be as fluid as ever and as funny as ever. His characters are - despite their odd tendencies, powers and general, well, existence - remain as real and even relatable as ever. I can only confess then that this book is again one of those "couldn't put it down"-ers that led me to suffer horrible eye-strain as, honestly and obviously, I couldn't put it down. For every mystery solved, a few more arise and with each, we are sucked (SHUT UP TOM!) even further back into this crazy Universe! And if along the way you think you have ANY of this sussed out, well, nuh-uh! Did not see hardly ANY of that coming!

You need to read this book. Yes, you need to read it at very least AFTER the previous Bill books, but I'm assuming you know that already. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to put in eye-drops and potentially even procure some hedgehog blood to cast an appropriate spell that will enable me to continue on with the next tome in the series!

Strange Days, Bill of the Dead Book 1,
by Rick Gualtieri

Maybe some spoilers...

For some reason, even though I told Goodreads I was reading this, it didn't register on my page. Oh, well. That's the bad news.

The good news is Bill Ryder is back! Having been a big fan of Tome of Bill, I was sad when it all came to a close -- even more so because it did so by taking all the magic out of the world, including all the creatures like the Feet, while returning vampires to their original human condition, which eliminated all but the younger vampires. The ending battle also took out Bill's best friend and roommate, Tom, who sacrificed himself for the cause. Oh -- and in this new series, Tom is back (sort of).

This new series picks up 5 years after the ending of Tome of Bill. Tom and Christy's daughter is now 5 years old. Bill and Sheila have broken up, and Bill and Christy have tentatively begun a new relationship. While Christy is away at a seminar for her work, Tom is watching her daughter, Tina. His friend and old D&D pal, Dave, who now sells anti-aging creams, is coming for a visit. Suddenly, Bill feels a wave of ennui so strong, he can barely move, while 5-yr old Tina is conjuring fireballs, something that should be impossible in this new age of no-magic. That all is a harbinger of two of the new-style vampires (those that could walk in the sunlight, but who should have been wiped out in that last battle) breaking into his apartment and trying to kidnap him. With the help of Tina's new-found magic, and the Icon's sword (which Sheila left behind when she and Bill broke up), Bill is able to fight them off.

From here it's off to the races, with Ed and Kelly joining in the fun, along with Gan, who Bill just learned a couple of years ago had also survived the end of magic. (spoiler -- she didn't age to her real age and turn to dust as the other old vamps did, and is now a teenager). Together they search for whom or whatever has caused this uptick in magic and where the new vampires had come from. The search will lead them right back to The Source and those that are trying to reopen the portal. The surprises include who is helping in that attempt and who is really behind the attempt.

Other than that, we're back in Bill's crazy, mixed-up world. Gualtieri's writing is as good as ever. Great proofing and editing, even and fast-moving pacing, and lots of action will keep the reader engaged. Yes, the same bathroom humor and 14-in-a-30 something body jokes are both front and center. As is Gualtieri's ability to teach this 70+ yr old reviewer something new about the word of porn in his books, because, yes, I did stop and look up "bukakke," even though I immediately wished I hadn't.

So, if you've been jonesing for another adventure with Freewill and his entourage, run, don't walk, to your computer and buy it today!

STRANGE DAYS is the reboot of the TOME OF BILL series that remains one of my favorite literary guilty pleasures. The second series, called BILL OF THE DEAD, is the start of a new storyline that reverses a lot of the final changes in the finale as well as sets up an entirely new chronicle of what I hope to be an equally lengthy series of books. It's an entertaining book, one of the author's best, and fans of the series should definitely pick it up.

If you plan to read the series, I suggest you read the previous volumes first as starting here will leave you thoroughly spoiled for it. Which, I mean, duh as it's the 9th book in the series (technically 12th counting a few spin-off books). So, discussing the book at length will require some spoilers. Consider yourself warned.

Strange Days is a good return to form for the author and actually an improvement on the original series. In the TOB, Bill was a grossly immature 25-year-old sexist and homophobic jerk who made being turned into a vampire seem lame. It was kind of the point of the series and one the author was aware of that a lot of Bill's problems were his own making. This volume picks up five years after the end of the previous series and, much to the readers surprise, Bill is a good deal calmer, more mature, and not offending everyone with every other sentence out of his mouth.

Bill is still the same wise cracking jerk he always was but the author cleverly compares him to one of his friends stuck in a (figurative as well as literal) limbo to show how much the character has grown. He's in a stable-ish relationship no one saw coming and yet actually works. He's also mostly put all the supernatural shenanigans in his life behind him.

Obviously, there wouldn't be much of a story if this remained the case and Bill is forced back into the world of the supernatural. He is reunited with a lot of his earlier associates and they are sent to undo the grand finale of the previous books. I'm okay with this, really, and enjoyed the way it all played out. I admit, I wasn't entirely fond about how some of the characters were handled like Gan, Sheila, and Sally but am interested in how things develop for them. I admit, its mostly Sally that bothered me because she's barely in the book. I missed Bill and her interaction. I don't usually ship characters but I kind of wanted them to make it work.

Bizarre, I know.

In any case, this isn't the kind of book you should pick up if you're unfamiliar with the series but should be a tremendous treat for fans. It's got all of the humor, wisecracks, pop culture references, and crazy shenanigans as before but the protagonist is a good deal more likable.

After way too long Bill is back and I was so glad to see it.

Though to be honest, when I say that he's as "Bad as Ever" we all know that he wasn't all that great a vampire to begin with. Am I right?

The story picks up nicely 6 years after then end of the prior series. Our familiar cast is back and as snarky as ever. I love the interactions as they feel "real" to me. I have friends JUST like that and if we aren't bashing each other to show our affection we know we've pissed someone off somehow.

While I wouldn't suggest this as an entry into the Tomb of Bill, you really do need to read the prior series for things to make sense, it is a natural and FUN extension to what has gone before. The story is interesting. The character interaction is fun. The world is FASCINATING and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Keep it up Rick and I'll keep reading.

Bravo.

Ugh, I can’t believe I finished this book

Bill of the Dead Book 1-Strange Days

Ugh, It’s everything you’d expect to groan about from a 1980’s brat pack movie. The fact that I get the jokes, puns and geek cultural references means:
* One, I’m old,
* Two, I watched a lot of bad movies as a teenager,
* Three, I am that geek of which you speak and
* Four, I can’t believe I finished this book.

It’s like watching accidents on the highway. You can’t pull your eyes away as you crash into the stopped car in front of you resulting in a fifteen car pile up. Mr. Gualtieri, finishing this book seemed important, though I’m not sure why, but I probably will wind up buying book two in the post apocalyptic future. Thanks so much for that.

Blah and bad

I got 24% in before I bailed. I read the first book awhile ago and forgot how much I disliked it. It all came flooding back in this book.

The writing is bad from flat characters to childish dialogue. The Main Character is still not worth hanging a story on. The immature approach to women and all relationships doesn't work, unless the point is to creep the reader out. I expected the undead or vampires to do that, not the writing style.

I'm going to try another of his series to satisfy my curiosity about his writing style. I won't try this series again, for sure.

Oh, how I've missed the ToB universe!

What is there really to say without regurgitating the plot? This was a story that I didn't realize just how much I actually craving it until I dove back in. Back are the rants and ravings of Bill, a nerd turned vamp and his gang of friends who have since returned to their normal form after closing the source. Back is the vocal chocolate that is Christopher John Fetherolf's narration of the various characters in the story.

Rick hit it out of the park with this entry and, like another reviewer, my only complaint is that I now have to wait for the next book. At least I have Second String Savior to look forward to shortly :)

Bravo!

Oops he did it again, played with my heart.

Just when I thought we were done this author drags us back into the Bill universe kicking and screaming, then proceeds to take everything we knew from the first series, all the heartbreaks, happy endings(lol pun not intended), our very sense of closure....and turns it all on it’s head. “Comedy/horror”...more like an emotional roller coaster for those of us invested in these characters.
So yeah, having now been warned, buy this book.

Been 5 years since Bill Ryder was involved in the end of the magical source. Bill is back to being the doughy man he was pre-Freewill. He's the godfather of Tina, Christy and Tom's little girl.
But this peaceful time has to come to an end, as Bill finds out when 2 vampires bash in his door. Bill, Christy, Ed and of course Gan need to find the answer to the return of magic and hopefully bring it to an end.
Rick Gualtieri has once again brought his characters together in a fun filled romp

Hits the mark

As the time went this book is a joy to read I am glad to see the story pick up and consequences coming full circle. I was sad by some turns the book took but understood by the end they were important for the story. I like all readers have our favorite characters and had hoped for different out comes. But how to the story as I could not put it down. Thanks for your hard work and I will look forward to book two now till then keep up the great work

Strange Days is my first exposure to Bill the Vampire. I haven't yet listened to The Tome of Bill series. After listening to this, I think I might just have to! This was a fun listen indeed! Great job by the narrator. The character voices were great, especially Glen! I'm looking forward to the rest of this series and hope to start the first series soon.

Bill's back!

Bill and his gang are back, dealing with new dilemmas and supernatural Phenomena! Just when you think you know what's going on, there's a surprise you just didn't see coming. The humor wasn't as good as in the past series, but I hold out hope. The snarkyness is still present and I look forward to more adventures.

In essence, the book is a great setup for the series to come. The second book is that as well, for the most part. Still a 5-star book filled with all the wit and humor you've come to love, but the enjoyment is tempered somewhat by the feeling that it's all... Largely filler, once you get past the fact some major events did occur at the start.

Um... REALLY REALLY REALLY stupid. If you've read the last 8-12 books, you'll not only find these characters' idiocy hard to believe but their moronic actions hard to believe.
Also, without spoilers, the author seemed to run out of things to write and thinks we like the most obnoxious characters in the series. It's hard to believe the author actually wrote this junk.
