Good advice, but the obnoxious spreading of pseudoscience (the ‘alpha’ myth) turned me off. There’s also a lot of scientific misinformation on here (yes, you DO need more than 6 hours of sleep a night!)
DNF Better books on the subject of self discipline are out there. In fact, I would say almost all books out there on the subject of self discipline are better than this one.
Pros Nice cover. Definitely makes you think there is something substantial in there. Easy to read.
Cons Editing. This book needs professional editing and formatting. Paragraphs were spaced funny, no spaces after periods, cutoff lines. Either the file got messed up in the upload or Mr. Winters lacks the self discipline to double check his work. Repetitive and meaningless sentences. There are several paragraphs I read before I stopped where he said the same thing in just a slightly different way again and again and again all in one paragraph. Dude is either trying to play off not being as smart as he thinks he is, had nothing to say but felt like he had to say something, or had a word count goal and padded this shit like a cell. Poor examples. If there were any examples of self discipline directly given they were vague, unsubstantial, or from the myopic gaze of the military being the foremost example of discipline and even then only with a sentence or two to back this up. It reads like someone who watches YouTube videos of military trainings and instantly thinks they know everything about. Now I don't know Winter's background so I can't speak for that, just only his words that are presented to the reader. Speaking of YouTube, this does read like someone who is trying to transcribe a motivational video while trying to make it their own.
Never has so much been said and meant so little. As I stated in the beginning there are better more thorough books on the subject written by people who know what they are talking about. Go get those books and enjoy the pretty picture on this cover while you read them.
🎧Some solid advice on self-discipline- what it is and why it is important to overall life success, goal achievement and happiness with guidance on time management, diet, exercise etc. However, it is so obviously written for a male audience, talking about male hormones only and giving examples of taking your shirt off in public and feeling empowered etc etc that it was a huge downside of this book.
Great thoughts in this book, but the author needed the self-discipline to proof-read. Just… terrible typos and poor sentence structure.
It says nowhere on the book cover that it’s for men, but men are addressed directly throughout.
No annotations or footnotes leaves the impression, occasionally, that you just met some rando at the bar and he’s ranting to you about how to change your life.
And the whole section on martial arts? It’s like the author forgot which book he was writing. Based on the amount of attention that other sections received, this should have been a paragraph at best.
With an editor and some development of these ideas, this could be a great book. Right now, the sheer amount of terrible sentence structure and typos undermine the validity of what would be some excellent words to live by.
Mr. Winters helped me see that I was moving forward when I thought I was dead-in-the-water. However, he also helped me realize that by not having complete Self-discipline in ALL areas of my life; I was hindering myself. But I've always known that by not having 'A vision', 'A defined purpose', etc. I cannot define goals - big or small - towards reaching it. And Mr. Winters may not have helped me discover it; but he helped me understand Self-discipline's important role in moving forward ... as he says, (and others too) small successes will combine into bigger successes.
So, goal #1: start applying Self-discipline to all areas of my life in order to prepare for defining and begin working towards 'my obsession'.
Thank you sir for your dedication to writing this informative book.
I’m not sure how this landed on my que to read so I didn’t seek this out. However who can’t learn something from how self disciple can help us grow. So i have it a go. There are definitely different nuggets to take away from this book and I was trying to give the author the benefit of the doubt that this was a very, very old book and he most certainly must have written an updated edition as I COULD NOT believe how the entire book was written for men. Huge miss. I never skip a chapter or stop a book because it’s just not for me. I power through. I found myself fast forwarding through much of the last few chapters. However I did listen to the last chapter twice. Good actionable info in there for anyone. So not recommend this book.
This book is about everything except discipline; if you expect to hear practical solutions to your discipline problem, this book is not helping you.
On the other hand, this book is a very typical book about how to stay motivated. It tells you that you Must do this or do that, but it never tells you how! I can say I am really disappointed with the book's quality, but on the other hand, I cannot expect much from 150 pages book!
Long read self-help article spread over 100 pages.
Rehashed stuff but overall decent if we don't count rubbish chapters on food / martial arts, non-sense filler stuff.
It's written for the most part like a personal confessions, which makes it bit more compelling.
Inherited famous quite from Al Pacino's speech out of Any Given Sunday at the near end of the book is a weird cringe cause it doesn't imply any reference back to original.
Alrighty... This book's subject matter is great. Self discipline but its message is hot garbage. He embraces the toxic masculinity of the alpha male and his whole branding is about that if you explore his social media and other materials he offers. He slapped a cool cover, made a short book, filled it with basic fluff about self discipline and targeted a male audience that can follow him into his alpha ideology of what a man is. You want something that matches this cover read the book of five rings instead. Mr. Winters is just selling a brand of toxic masculinity and he seems to think that any woman that doesn't fit his ideal woman is not high value. Even though I doubt he values women in general after reading his tweets in his site of "masculine mindset". It's 2022 and people should be what they feel like being and not fit into any bloody boxes that self entitled people like him want to place everyone in.
To me it seemed like the author wants to prove his superiority with drawn-out platitudes and alpha-mindset. References like the "Triune Brain Theory" are pseudo-scientific and outdated.
If you are searching for a serious book about self-discipline, keep on searching.
Very similar minded thinking that has gotten me through so much hardship in my life. It’s amazing to actually be able to read these habits that I’ve enacted my whole life in words and in such a brilliant manner with so many examples!
This book is great to set up for a successful fitness and self discipline lifestyle. It is aimed more toward men but that was okay I just read it and still apply it to myself. Great on getting focused and on the self discipline
- Great book. Got immense value out of it considering I got it for free. The commandments of a successful mindset will take you far - The first few chapters are the best then it starts to fall off when he talks about productivity, focus and mental toughness
I don't feel this book had much substance. It talked about certain topics but didnt really have ways to help you achieve things. It was repetitive and had very basic knowledge, I thought. It also should have specified in the title or something that this book was written specifically for men.
The contents of the book was solid. The only issue that may have occurred was the guy’s obsession with martial arts. There’s seem to be an emphasis on affordability with respect to organic foods. However, the affordability on martial arts need to be emphasized.
Meh. There were some good tips and ideas in here but also some outlandish opinions erroneously stated as fact…i.e. humans don’t need more than 6 hours of sleep a night. 🤦♀️ Honestly it felt like this was written by a tough macho guy that is slightly chauvinistic.
I good a good fresh new prospective out of it, however after reading, it felt a bit vague like it could use a chapter of two to fresh out the concept. Otherwise, helpful book.
I liked that it had a lot of info to share but yet it was a quick read. I personally would of liked to see more references and links to studies to back up some of the information in the book. Otherwise it was an ok read.
I already have a chosen martial art and a particular way that I exercise so the section for example listing different types of martial arts and their benefits was irrelevant
A very clear and consice way to approach discipline. Even as a veteran I can grasp the value in this book. The solid tactics as well as the examples mention how much habit and mindset play into the development of success. Taking on strengthening regiments, running and even how the resistance will come from in the mind.
I really like how great examples were given regarding friends and family if they try to talk you out of your strict frame to reach the goals you set in life. It also mentions having a obsession in some cases in order to achieve the goals you set forward in life and that its ok to have high run standards so that you may actualize your greatest potential.
Lastly, the whole part about writing down goals daily to prime them for the subconscious so that you may take action on them daily, leading to weekly, monthly etc. If you can see your goals and have a vision you can plot the steps to take next to make any aspect of life a reality.
