Dark Verité

Rate this book
Verité, heir apparent in royal lineage and whose ascension comes at a time of other impending stipulations, was unable until to assume her rite of passage to the throne until she found the perfect mate. Secret stipulations to her royal ascension detailed in the Royal Grail would only be revealed to the Princess when the time came. She was chartered by her father, who was unable to give Verité counsel, to find the man that would share her life, her future and her bed…but not the throne.

Failure to do so doomed the coterie.

Rockledge, a prince and royal protector of his father, the King and his older brother who was heir apparent, fought with strength against those that threatened silently to take everything by deceit and trickery from his family.

Verité woke in the blazing sun on the royal sands of the beach on a distant shore that Rockledge, who discovered her sleeping, protected.

I was born when we kissed; I lived in your embrace while we loved. I died when we parted.

Would they fight, side-by-side, to the death defending all that they loved and cherished? Or would they seize their rite of passage, rise to the ascension of royalty themselves bound by danger, loyalty and love?

**Spoilers**

DNF - was part of a digital boxed set I got for free otherwise I wouldn't have a copy of it.

A 17 year old undefined scaled sea (?) creature with a marine style tail that lives in the desert(?) (yet has wings) must go to the human world to find a mate before her 20th birthday in order to inherit the crown from her dying father and to fulfil a murky oath to her clan to discover the secrets of the grail in order to become queen.

That the requirement to read (author's term) the grail is only known to her father (who himself has not read the grail) and only happens every 100 years is written as a pressing issue is weird. Should she not fulfil the condition required of her NO ONE WOULD KNOW.

Her clan doesn't know about the requirement and her dad is about to die - No one would know if she took the throne without knowing the grail secrets.

Someone only needs to know everyone 100 years - This makes no sense. Either its something every monarch in the clan should know or it clearly has no effect on the clan. What happens if her dad had died BEFORE he got a chance to pass on the quest? He was the only person in the clan/world who knew the information had to be found even if he didn't know what it was.

It's pretty heavily intimated that the character's family is the only Royal family in her clan/species - so essentially it's what? A family secret?

It was never explained why the fulfilment of the oath to mate and read the grail was important at the outset.

As I said, I didn't finish this book, but, what I did read made no logical sense.

The having to find a mate bit made a small amount of sense in the explanation that the clan needed new blood/DNA if it was to stop from dying out - HOWEVER the fact this burden is placed on ONE 17 year old girl and not the whole clan to find human mates makes absolutely no sense. How is the clan supposed to benefit from the child/children of ONE couple? Rejuvenating a species takes more than one breeding pair.

From skimming through as I skipped to the next book in the digital box set it explains at the end of chapter 4 that she's actually a dragon. Why wasn't this articulated clearly from the beginning? It wasn't portrayed as something she was trying to discover/work out. The explanations I caught in this book did not seem very logical and the obstacles seemed like they logically weren't obstacles.

Now as I said, I skimmed through this book without even finishing the first chapter because I could instantly tell from the opening act this book was not for me, so I might have missed some significant information, however, I caught enough to see the author wrote some fairly graphic sex scenes which I really didn't think was appropriate for a protagonist of 17 (she might have turned 18 on her trip and I missed it).

This book had a significant gross factor for me (I really don't want to read about teenagers sex lives and, unless they are a teenager themselves, I have serious concerns with why someone would) and made no logical sense. Would not recommend.

Not really to my taste. I had hoped for a little more depth.
