Heart Strings

Rate this book
As the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Grady Memorial, Karlee Shae Kinkade deals with hearts all day long-- young ones, and she’s the best at mending them when they’re broken.
With a schedule like hers, there’s no time for love. Her patients need her.
She’s tried finding it on her own, but love is fickle when time is precious.
Instead, she gets that warm, fuzzy feeling that love brings from her patients and her ‘Magic Brew’ at the local coffee shop. They say there’s a love potion in those coffee beans. If there is, put it in an IV bag and hook Karlee up STAT.
While she is saving lives and finding cures for heart disease, her friends are getting engaged or married, and some are starting families. Karlee feels her biological clock ticking with no future husband in sight.
That is until the hot new Emergency doctor stalks her to find out where the ‘Magic Brew’ comes from.
He’s bold and funny, with an accent like James Bond and a smile that will make your heart explode. There are only two things holding her back…he’s a colleague and she isn’t a fan of the hospital rumor mill. She’s seen enough of Grey’s Anatomy to know she doesn’t need that kind of drama in her life.
Can Karlee throw caution to the wind and follow what her own heart is telling her?

Heart Strings, a novella by C.M. Lally, is my very first book by this author.

heart strings

Dr. Karlee Shae KinKade, otherwise known as Dr. K, is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Grady Memorial Hospital. She’s the youngest to make chief of a department at her hospital but the position hasn’t come without concessions. Karlee gives everything to her young patients. She spends long hours at the hospital, going home alone to her cat. She has no time or energy to go out to meet people but she can’t deny that it bothers her knowing other women her age are marrying and having children.

female doctor

One of Karlee’s greatest pleasures and what sustains her during her long hours at work is what they call the “magic brew” at a coffee shop near the hospital. The coffee is heaven and the shop also offers a quiet corner to decompress at times when she needs a few minutes away from the hospital.

coffee gif

It’s during one of her visits to the shop when she is approached by the best looking man she has ever seen who is also wearing the white coat of a doctor. He is complete with dimples and a swoony British accent. Dr. Marc Haliday is the new attending in the Emergency Department.

hospital

Marc soon approaches Karlee with a joint project, a community health fair. It’s obvious that Marc is also interested in Karlee as well. Karlee never dates within the hospital. She can’t stand hospital gossip and doesn’t want to be the topic of it. But Marc is hard to resist. Karlee is going to have to decide whether to follow her heart and see where this might go, or shut it down before it even has a chance to get started.

This is such a sweet little story. Marc is most definitely sexy and these two had buckets of chemistry. He knows what he wants and is determined to get it. It’s Karlee that will have to decide whether she is willing to give love a chance.

Heart Strings was the perfect addition to my Valentines night in. Karlee and Marc were a slowburn I enjoyed falling into. This was a sweet and quick read with characters that were fun to get to know. I especially enjoyed Dr. Haliday's accent (at least the way I imagined it in my head) and his charismatic personality. I'm an avid Grey's Anatomy fan and CM Lally definitely scratched my medical drama itch, just without as many sudden, tragic deaths.

I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Heart Strings by C.M. Lally is a sweet, quick read. Karlee Shea Kinkade and Marcus Remington Holiday are both endearing characters who pulled me into the story (though it started a tad slow) and I read it in one sitting. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of sweet, light romances. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I have found this short novella very sweet and refreshing. Both characters made me smile so much. Marc’s way of approaching Karlee initially may seem frightening but once the reader goes deeper into the story he/she will realize that he is simply smitten by her personality. Karlee, on the other hand, is afraid to show her feelings but as soon as she catches a glimpse of Marc’s charm towards other women, then she will draw out her claws and claim her man. A very fast read and a well developed story.

Karlee Shea Kinkade is determined that she doesn't have time for love because she has worked so hard to get where she is now as Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Grady Memorial hospital until she meets the handsome charismatic Marcus Remington Haliday who is the new attending ER doctor.

As Marc persues Karlee she seems to be running hot and cold leaving him to wonder what in the world is going on then realizes the alarm on her biological clock has gone off due to current happenings in the lives of 3 female doctors she attended medical school with. And the final straw is when the ole green monster rears its head after she hears a couple of nurses talking about Marc then sees him at the end of a meeting with a pharmaceutical rep and then is approached by a nurse who hands off a note which he pockets. She then runs and keeps running until she stumbles on the reason a patient is having some symptoms with no back up reason and understands that is exactly what has been happening to her, without Marc her heartstrings malfunction ;(

I love this magic little love story. It has the perfect beginning and the perfect ending although I do wish I could have continued reading Karlee Shea and Marc's story, it was Magic.

I had tears rolling down my cheeks when Marc proposed ;) It was beautiful.

Karlee has worked hard to get to where she has at such a young age, she is driven and hard working, nothing gets in her way of looking after her patients on the Pediatric Cardiology ward.

Marc is a British ER doctor, and he is very much interested in Karlee from the first time he sees her. He follows her to her favourite coffee shop and asks to join her, which she agrees! They talk for a while and then he asks for her help on a project he wants to set up and she yes.

Karlee is starting to have feelings for Marc, but when she sees him with a pretty woman at lunch and then sees a nurse hand him her number she leaves, he tries to chase after her but she’s gone!

Marc knows that Karlee has to come to him, but can he wait for her to see that he is infact what she needs in her life! Only time apart will tell!

This is a short sweet story, where two busy people need to find time for each other!

Another great read from CM Lally. Karlee a Pediatric Cardiologist has seen a lot of heartbreak when she can no longer do anything to help her young patients. Marc is a the hot British ER doctor who needs Karlee's help to get a health project off the ground. While working together sparks fly, but will a brief misunderstanding keep Karlee from admitting that Marc is the one for her? Or will Marc be the patient and understanding man and let Karlee work through her issues? With great characters that the reader instantly falls in love with and a storyline that was truly enjoyable this is another CM Lally book you do not want to miss.

Now, this is a perfectly titled book!
"Heart Strings" are being tugged in all directions-including my own.
Crazy as it may sound I wasn't fond of either-Karlee Shae Kinkade or Marcus Remington Holiday in the beginning.
They both seemed to have a chip on their sholder.. or at least, so I thought.
Moving along in the race to find answers and love it hit me, Ms. Lally had created beautifully flawed, real, with the best of intentions characters that were going to make the same messy mistakes we all do - tipping the scale of love/dislike more 95/5 *winks*
Powerful in its message, layered with heat and sweet its a perfect story to get lost in for a little while!

This was a quick story that definitely tugs on the heartstrings.

Karlee is strong independent woman and successful Dr. Who deals with pediatric heart patients.

On a day when she saved two but lost one - she meets another dedicated Dr. Marc draws her in with his looks at the beginning - but it’s definitely his heart that wins her in the end.

My only issue with this story is that it felt a bit rushed. While the connection between the MCs was undeniable - I would have loved to delved more into their backstories and such.

As always I want to read more from this author!

I enjoyed this quick read. I really liked Marc. Karlee took a little longer to warm up to even though the story is told from her point of view.
