Rate this book
Gennie MacDonnell grew up surrounded by love. Even so, she doesn’t expect her marriage to be marked by all-consuming passion. She was betrothed to Aedan Munro when she was but a lass of thirteen. Still, she does hope for companionship…and perhaps a bit more. But she learns quickly learns both wishes are in vain.

Aedan Munro was taught the importance of honor, duty, and respect…but never love. Unbeknownst to him, his entire life has been shaped by a tragedy that happened long before he was born. But, to his surprise, the sweet lass he marries stirs both his heart and his desire. It flies in the face of everything he’s been taught, but it makes him yearn for more…for something he believes he can’t have.

In spite of the demons of the past, will they be strong enough to listen to their hearts and claim the love of a lifetime?

I have read all of Ceci Giltenan's books, and I keep waiting for one to be slightly off somehow, but it never happens. Everything she writes is worthy of five-star reviews, including this book.

In a nutshell, I loved this book, which is set in the Scottish Highlands during medieval times. I felt such empathy for the protagonist, Gennie, and found her to be such a likable and relatable character. She is betrothed to Aedan, whom she marries. While he treats Gennie with respect, he is cold, unloving, and inflexible when it comes to the "rules." However, I also felt for him. He desperately wanted to fall in love with his wife, but his upbringing and the messages pounded into his head about the "sins" of marital lust made that almost impossible.

This was truly a lovely story, and I enjoyed watching Gennie strip away the armor surrounding Aedan’s heart. It was a pleasure taking the journey with the couple, watching them shift from awkward and distant strangers to a couple in love.

Further, I adored the cameo from a very special (magical!) woman from Ms. Giltenan’s Pocket Watch Chronicles.

Lastly, this was a page turner, like all of Ceci Giltenan's other books, and I can't wait to read her next one.

Highly recomended. This is a different story of a highland romance i used to read. Im pity for Aedan for never receive any affection of love ..but become an honorable man and son..who really respect his father and clan..Im crying when wee laasie Avelina sneak to Ragnall solar to appologize for being live. seems i can feel their sadbess and loss. and the second time when Aedan meet Avelina for the first time...3rd time is when Avelina ..again ...visit Ragnal on his room..and how they cried each other.
While reading this story...my mind keep asking..what hapen to Avelina...she is my heroin also...and then.when i found out Ragnal do not want to build any relationship with clan Dunn, im so happy and satiesfied that Avelina appears to be as i hope.
Love this book.

THE PRICE OF SORROW

I just finished this book, so I am still a see bit teary.
We have, as usual, a cameo appearance by a certain elderly lady that turns the tide of the book, but first, the main characters flail about, hurting themselves and each other in time honored fashion, with more reality than leads to hope. Still, I only sniffled a little until things got really, really bad between the two. I understood each character, could hear their words almost before they spoke...indeed, it was often as if they spoke for me, I was so well drawn into the story. So when I finally fled the castle into the fog, it surprised me not at all that I...errr, I mean, GENNIE, got lost....
This is an author whose gentle skill creates characters with depth, scenery a person can flee into, and dialogue that a reader can speak themselves. This author is a scientist of writing, exploring the human psyche on paper through putting her characters into different places, an artist who paints her pictures with words.
The scientist in me admires her; the artist in me envies her; the reader that is me clings to her words.

I got a little teary eyed in parts but in a good way.

I hope we hear more from this family. Very well written. It shows the importance of speaking each other's 'language ' and understanding. Truly listening to each other. That is the lesson learned.
My heart aches for both of them as they each struggle to find their way in the arranged marriage. One raised with so much love And joy. The other crew up without hugs, comfort, and Not shown real affection.

And spoiler.....I think the old lady gathering was Avelina's mother 's maid. But that's just my wishful thinking.

Another brilliant read.

Firstly Gertrude !!!!! I adore that character she turns up just when you need her everyone needs a Gertrude in their life lol.

70 percent of the book I was angry aggravated and sooooooooo wanted to commit murder on Aedan or shake some sense into him but then the book took a turn and I cried the rest of the 30 percent. I will not spoil it for others but well worth my anger hahahah. Absolutely loved it beautifully written transporting you back in time that only Ceci Giltenan knows how.

Such a beautiful story of forever love!

The story of the Munro family is one of great loss but even greater love. Ceci Giltenan is a masterful storyteller! She took me to the lowest lows and had me bawling in my handkerchief, but then brought me to the highest highs, cheering out loud for Aeden and Genevieve! This story is wonderful! I highly recommend!

Wonderful

Another wonderful historical romance from Ceci. The coupling was very sweet with so much to overcome. The differences between the couple we're relatable even for us modern people. I like how there is a sprinkling of Scottish slang but not so much I'm translating every sentence as I'm trying to stay in the story. Can't wait for more.

Speak a new language

I loved how psychology was interwoven with God's word. I was angry at Father Matthew but then felt sorry for him. Such a lonely bitter man, sad. I love Jack, what a sweet "wee wolfhound!". They speak even a different language. I loved the family reunion! ! Wonderful book!

I don't know whether to like this book or feel annoyed with it.. This book was built on too much respect/disrespect that I've lost count on how many times I've come across those words.. hence the 3 stars.
