About the author

Stephen John

Steve is a retired business executive and former sports journalist who now writes cozy mysteries with a twist of sass and suspense. His Miss Fortune novels—set in the beloved world created by Jana DeLeon—blend small-town charm with fast-paced adventure, earning him six #1 rankings in Amazon’s action/adventure category.

Steve’s fiction career began in 2008 with Amazon’s Kindle Worlds, where he was invited to craft stories using established characters. His sharp dialogue and tightly woven plots quickly made him a fan favorite in the Miss Fortune universe.

Beyond cozy mysteries, Steve has co-authored two thrill-packed titles—Devil’s Face and Gray Ghost—with bestselling author David Wood in the Dane Maddock Action Adventure Series. He also collaborated with Jesse Jacobson on Rainhorse, a gritty Western tale of justice and redemption. His standalone novel Night Music showcases his range, blending suspense and emotional depth in a story all his own.

Steve’s first book, Deal Me In, is a nonfiction deep dive into the lives of twenty poker legends, commissioned by Phil Hellmuth himself. His time with poker and sports celebrities—including Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Johnny Chan, and basketball stars like LeBron James and Rajon Rondo—inspired him to keep telling great stories.

When he’s not writing, Steve enjoys life in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, children, and grandchildren. You might also catch him performing in the Seattle music scene with his acoustic duo, Latitude 47—proof that good stories and good tunes never go out of style.

A fun little story about CIA agent Miss Fortune written by Stephen John. Keep in mind that it is the creation of Jana DeLeon. This time they have left Sinful Louisiana for Seattle. Where sheriff Carter needs to find and help an old army buddy. Naturally Gertie and Ida Belle comes north to help.

nope nope nope

So the writing isn’t terrible but the blatant misogyny is a sticking point and the writer really needs to reel it in. Try rereading the Fortune books and assessing Fortunes temperament and demeanour a little better. She doesn’t feel the need to belittle other women for amusement and she isn’t one to require validation from Carter or anyone else, she’s a trained field operative with many years of experience, she has her own mind and this book screams inept and excessive vulnerability that are completely out of character for this much beloved heroine. Deeply disappointed this was the approach Stephen John has decided to take when the story could have been a lot more robust without the sneaky yet obvious distain for strong women leads. Self-assess your motives and sexism that come screaming to life in this book.

Good stories

I love Fortune. Ida bell and Gertie. I do have some suggestions. I'm a fast reader. When a word is misspelled, or the sentence is awkward. Words placed in the wrong order or not making sense, it stops me cold while I try to figure out what the author/character is trying to say. Might I suggest employing a pre-print reader to catch those types of things before you go to print. Spell check can't correct the problems I am speaking of. I've read the original series and recently downloaded several so I'm ready when I finish a book. Sometimes I read 1 942 a day. Thank you for continuing the books.

VERY DISAPPOINTING!!

The story line wasn’t too bad. But, again, there were so many misspellings, too many grammatical errors, duplicated words, words left out, that I had to read a sentence 2 and 3 times to figure out what the author was trying to say. These errors are very distracting! An author should have good grasp of the English language if he is going to write a book. I highlighted the mistakes I found, but I might’ve missed some. I counted over 30 errors in this book. That’s shameful. You need to proofread a lot better on your subsequent books.

Carter and Swamp Team 3 set off to Seattle to help an old military friend of Carter

The team has to hunt down Carter's friend Paul who is in hiding from 2 drug lords who want the drugs he is hiding. Everyone is in danger as the assassin hunts Paul. And the girls also help the housekeeper who gets fired for letting them in to Carter's room so they can find out any information on Paul's whereabouts.

Brewing in Seattle

There's more brewing in Seattle than Starbucks. Carter is there searching for a friend from his days in the Marines who is in serious trouble with drug lords. Fortune and her elderly assistants are told to remain in Sinful, because of potential life- threatening danger. Again they fail to listen, and it's a good thing they didn't. Read now for humor, intrigue, danger and love.

Very entertaining

The additional back story to the Fortune story was true to the original characters. I laughed out loud several times. If you like the story of Fortune and the Sinful citizens you will enjoy this story. My only complaint is that there were several errors in grammar and that drives me crazy .

I love the Miss Fortune books

but only the ones written by Jana Deleon. Does she know that your books are so full of errors? I only got about 3/4 through this book before I just couldn't stand any more. I won't be reading any more books by this author, which is a shame, because he writes a good story.

Good

Fortune goes with boyfriend out of town. Where they run into all kinds of trouble. Girlie and Ida Mae show up to help. Except Carter does not want to involve Fortune! What do y’all think happened?

The author didn't hold true to characters created by Jana DeLeon. The book would have been so much better if the author had taken one of the Miss Fortune books and written it from Carter's point view.

I was really enjoying this. Until the concert and then the last chapter.

If large men keep tossing Fortune around like a Frisbee and knocking her unconscious and hospitalized for days with brain swelling and girly babbling, she won't be able to function as a highly trained assassin anymore.

I loved the Dana Deleon books but these are too much romance and Fortune comes across as too lovelorn and less kickass. They are entertaining but just not feeling it.
