Dear grouchy I’m considering your offer and need clarification before proceeding. Despite being an artist, I think you know that as a busy New Yorker, I am also practical and straightforward.
That said, I need to make sure you know that this could never turn into anything serious. I don’t care if you’re trying to get over your ex-girlfriend or hoping she’ll eventually want to get back together with you—just don’t project your messy feelings about her onto me.
Because, despite your resemblance to an underwear model, I won’t be falling for you. Ever.
Yours, with clear boundaries, Bernadette
p.s. I’d like to be very clear that regardless of whether or not we do this, nothing will change my feelings for your dog (and we both know she loves me too).
Dear nutty As a lawyer, I must clarify that I never made an offer. It was a suggestion regarding the possibility of a non-permanent, no-strings-attached arrangement between two consenting adults whose beds are separated by a wall.
As a man who shares your disdain for messy feelings, I applaud your confidence in your ability to not fall for me. Hold onto that. I’d also like to make it clear that I don’t care if you want to get over your crush on your boss or if you still hope he’ll realize you’re the woman of his dreams. That said, I definitely wasn’t thinking about my ex-girlfriend when I kissed you in the laundry room, and I’m quite sure you weren’t thinking about your boss.
As a dog daddy, I'm glad you're so taken with my girl. But if you try to steal her I will get all Liam Neeson up in your pretty face.
As a busy New Yorker, I think clear boundaries are hot. I have one hour free to blow your mind tonight. So turn off Netflix, put down that glass of wine, and let’s do this.
Yours for now, Matt

Amazon Top 25 and USA Today bestselling author Kayley Loring spent many years as a screenwriter (under a different name) in Los Angeles before moving to the Pacific Northwest to live out her childhood dream of being a Disney heroine who talks and sings to woodland creatures. When not trying to keep animals alive, she’s writing steamy romantic comedy novels, obviously. She’s breathing cleaner air, writing dirtier words, and staring at her computer screen until her eyeballs dry out instead of prancing around Southern California in miniskirts and going to the hair salon. Still waiting for the woodland creatures to clean her house, though.
Read or listen to Kayley’s books when you want humor, heat, and heart. You’ll enjoy top-notch banter, strong heroines, lovable characters you’d want to know in real life and you’ll swoon over perfectly imperfect book boyfriends. All Kayley Loring books are steamy open door romance. Be sure to check out her next-level audiobooks!

"Come back to bed." I don't often discuss book titles, but this one's perfect for this book. The intimacy in these four little words sums up Matt and Bernadette's relationship, because once they met there was no way they were not going to go back to each other. For each other.
"'Matt McGovern. I know your secret.' 'What’s that?' 'You’re even more handsome on the inside.'" Can someone tell me where I can find me a Matt McGovern, Esq., please? I was into him from the start. I loved his grumpiness, and closed-offness. I love that it's the guy who got his heart broken - I am not condoning this, but it seems like it's always the woman who's been through a break-up. I love that he falls for Bernadette first, and he pursues her, and he would pursue her across all the bridges in the world.
"I wish you were here in bed with me now. I wish you were in bed with me all the time. I want to crash through this wall between us. I want to break all of your rules." Bernadette may actually have become my favorite Kayley Loring heroine. She's different. She's not waiting for a man in her life, and she's perfectly OK with one-night-stands and no-string arrangements. She's independent, and strong, and doesn't take any BS. I love it. On the inside, she may be a lot more than that, if you're really willing to look. The only thing I didn't like was her sort of obsession/starstruckiness (is this a word? not sure, using it anyway!) with her boss, and I REALLY didn't like her boss's attitude. Jerkface.
"'I’m going to wear you out, Bernadette Farmer.' 'I’m going to crash through all the walls, Esquire.'" Maybe it's true that Bernadette first notices Daisy, his dog, and that she kind of falls in love with her. However, the attraction for Matt is right there, seeping through the pages, with scorching chemistry and a moment in the laundry room that is the definition of hot in my book.
And no-strings-attached has never had these many strings - I think, at one point, they were so entwined in each other you couldn't find enough scissors to cut through it all.
"'Yes, I am. That was me trying to stay away from you.” I walk over to her. “This is me wanting to get closer to you.'" In a typical Kayley Loring way, the banter is obviously incredible. The e-mails, the texts, the in-person chats... it's all amazing. The fact that they use their full names throughout the book as you would if you wanted to distance yourself from that person, or as if you're pissed off at that person, just makes it all the more endearing to me. Yes, I'm weird that way.
"'I think everything that I thought was being in love before was really just a longing for this feeling I have for you.'" I love how Bernadette tears down his walls, and I love how he lets her do it, even without noticing he is doing it. (The post-its! OMG, the post-its. *swoons*) I love how he does the same for her, and makes her realize she doesn't have to be afraid of what they have. He's her anchor. She brings out the best of him. They're in it together. They complement each other.
"You’re trained to render three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface, but for me, you made a two-dimensional world three-dimensional again." Both these people were two-dimensional characters in a book, actually. But the way they're written and their story made them real, three-dimensional people to me, and that's the beauty of good writing.
Kayley Loring, you are killing me! And I am loving every second of it! This smile on my face is not going away anytime soon!
I have been down with flu for weeks and I needed a fun book to cheer me up and I thought this would be a fun and hot book but it was neither fun nor hot; I got bored and skipped pages most of the time.
It's the same old same old; nothing new. I know that sometimes a cliché topic can be written so well that you want to read it again and again but it wasn't the case here.
I couldn't connect with either of the characters. The hero, Matt, is hung up on his ex who broke up with him and he doesn't even fantasize about any other woman let alone sleep with one because he hopes they may get back together.
The heroine, Bernadette, on the other hand, has a huge crush on her boss but he hasn't shown that kind of an interest in her yet.
These two people become neighbors for a temporary amount of time.
When Matt sees his ex with another guy, he finally understands that she is not coming back to him, so he feels free to do what he wants.
Bernadette has always been a woman who prefered no-strings attached relationships so these two acknowledge that they are attracted to one another but they both want to avoid a serious relationship so they become f*ck-buddies.
And then, the whole boring and predicted process happens:
The sex is so very good but that should be enough; therefore, they don't go out for dates not to complicate things. Then, in time, they start to develop feelings but they don’t acknowledge it fearing the other party is not feeling the same. A few cases of jealousy here and there and they have to accept it in the end.
I neither felt the passion nor the love… Sorry ☹
Dual point of view 235 pages No cheating between the hero & heroine / No intimate scenes with other people
This book definitely making me wish for a good looking hot and sexy neighbor during this confusing so called new normal. Who can understand the meaning of new normal? But romance gives me some comfort in this confusing time. Minus the handsome neighbor.
I slowly like Miss Loring sassy smart humor. She has it good in Come Back to Bed. She surely can put a sassy entertain story in a old fashion theme in romance story. The chemistry exploded for both of the characters. It was fun seeing how grumpy Matt slowly turns into soft cuddle sweet hero. Even Daisy has some character on it even the dog only play small part on the story.
Again, re living in a new normal (whatever the term means) it is good to have something, like romance books, still give us sweet loving hope to live.
From start to finish I was wearing a big goofy smile on my face. The characters were marvellous, the storyline entertaining and the love story played out perfectly.
Honestly, this author is becoming one of my very favourites. Her stories are sexy, humorous and emotionally mature. Sure, I sometimes wish the couples would just hurry up already, but mostly I'm satisfied.
I need ... want ... have got to have more Kayley Loring in my life. ;-)
4 stars. It took me a minute to get into this story, but once I did… I ended up enjoying it more than the first. The MCs of this book are both going on my favorites shelves. Such a great pairing. The ending & epilogues were so sweet that I got cavities and I loved every second.
Safe; no virgins, hero not a manwhore, hero’s g/f broke up with him prior to the start of the story and he takes a little bit to fully get over her. She causes some OW drama, plus some women hit on the hero, but he isn’t interested. Heroine has had FWB arrangements in the past, but no relationships. She has a crush on her boss and he does cause some OM drama. Neither are interested in others once they get together, no scenes with OM/OW, no cheating.
Well, this was fantastic! Honestly, I'm a little stunned because this was my first book by this author and I was not expecting all of that. I'm not really sure what even made me pick this up but I'm so glad I did. Seriously, this book was everything! A sexy, fun romantic comedy with wonderful characters, excellent storyline, great pacing, and beautiful writing. I mean, there was absolutely nothing not to like at this book. The art was really different than usual romance books for me, and I'm definitely not an artist but the way the author describes everything you can actually picture it. Matt and Bernadette are going up there with some of my very favorite characters ever. Also, when we finally get to meet Bernadette's parents, I could not stop laughing! I will definitely be going through the author's back log after this excellent read. Can't recommend this one enough.
OMG ANOTHER INCREDIBLY AWESOME AUDIO!! I am hooked!! LOVE IT. Matt and Bernadette were PERFECTION. Yes I am yelling. Kayley Loring is a MUST read and now a MUST listen to author for me. I am loving attacking her backlist and this one is spectacular. I connected, wanted, laughed, lived with these characters. I was completely connected to everyone and everything. Thank you so much Ms Loring. You rock!!
I simply adore friends with benefits trope and 'Come Back to Bed' did it oh-so-right. This story has all the elements that I appreciate about depictions of such friendly arrangements: high steam factor, fun and flirtation, setting up of boundaries and then inevitable crossing of them, growing intimacy and that slight angst caused by emerging feelings and uncertainty.
Who doesn't love all that xD ?
It didn't hurt that both Bernadette and Matt were such fun characters to read about. It's definitely party due to the appeal of sunny-meets-grouchy trope but not solely that.
The fact that it was Bernadette who was into no-strings relationships brought on a hint of freshness to the story. Matt was so stoic most of the time, so all the moments when it was obvious how much of a goner he was for Bernadette were sweet and precious, not to mention cute as hell.
Add to that their connection (e.g. how Matt felt so drawn to Bernadette's art) and personal growth arcs alongside the romance, and all of it really brought it home for me.
I'm really glad to have come across Kayley Loring's books. She writes fun, sexy and cute love stories and that's something that I just cannot get enough to be honest.
I’ve had really crappy luck with Kindle Unlimited books lately. I’ve also had crappy luck with new-to-me authors lately. So when I saw this KU book by a new-to-me author, I was skeptical to say the least. But the blurb was good and the other reviews were good, so I gave it a try, thinking that if it sucked, I’d DNF quick if necessary. Imagine my absolutely joyous shock when I actually ended up LOVING the book! Yay, Kayley Loring!!
Here’s what I loved:
Slow-burn romance: I adore a good slow-burn romance, and this one fit the bill nicely. When the story starts, the heroine, Bernadette, and the hero, Matt, aren’t in relationship-seeking mode. She’s a little hung up on her boss and he’s reeling from a recent break-up with his former live-in girlfriend. So there wasn’t immediate, overwhelming romance-y feelings between them which I really liked. It gave them a chance to become friends and really get to know each other before the sexy times started.
Bernadette: In the very beginning, I kind of thought Bernadette was going to be one of those tongue-tied-around-gorgeous-guys type heroines who was clumsy and weird and always a little awkward around people. I’ve seen that kind of heroine more times than I can count lately. But she really wasn’t like that at all. She’s a creative free-spirit, but she’s also smart and snarky and organized and great at her job. Her ability to verbally spar and hold her own with Matt was AWESOME.
And honestly, I also loved that Bernadette lives in New York City and is a proud stay-at-home-and-watch-Netflix kind of gal. I can TOTALLY relate to that.
Matt: Matt’s a little bit grumpy and sullen in the beginning of the book, but that’s really only because he’s a bit messed up about his recent break-up. Once he gets over that, he’s a genuinely nice guy and y’all know how much I love a nice-guy hero. Watching the sullen, grumpy, kind of uptight lawyer fall for the fun free spirit was really kind of delightful. (And not much delights me, folks. I’m pretty grumpy and sullen myself.)
The side characters: This book had great side characters. Bernadette’s parents were awesome, Aunt Dolly was awesome, Daisy the dog was awesome...are you seeing a pattern here? The side characters served an actual purpose in the story and didn’t merely exist to move the relationship between Matt and Bernadette along, and I really appreciated that.
Odds and ends: The pacing of the story was perfect, I didn’t notice too many egregious typos and errors, the sex scenes were nice and spicy, there was tons of fun, witty banter, and the characters acted like grown-ups 99.9% of the time. These are all things that helped move this book to my keeper shelf.
So, long-story-short, this was a fun read and I’m super glad I took a chance on it. This book is proof that not all KU reads by new-to-me authors are toxic. It helped remind me to always keep an open mind, just like my mom taught me. (Thanks, Mom. And thanks, Kayley Loring!)

Well... here we go again. I enjoyed it. I really did, so why the heck only 3 stars?
Story of Bernie and Matt. Artist and a lawyer. Cute dog between them and some rental space. Cute and Handsome. Eight pack cause six wasn't enough. All this should make this and excellent read but we're here again. 3 stars.
I loved the writing. You can clearly see that author worked very hard on having this novel polished to even single dot on the last page. Simply proper but... also safe. I loved the attempt of having this read in a light and humorous accent but it wasn't consistent, sometimes over the top. Also I kind of wish something had happened. Plot was kept plain and I missed that bit of action, drama, if you know what I mean.
I adored Daisy and Matt's relationship, love between dogs and people is always cute in books. I kind of felt bad for Matt but I also didn't feel like he was the strongest hero out there. He was depended on his women, regardless of they were two legs model or 4 paws pet. If he ever was left by himself, I Don't thing he would be able to survive. First you need to love yourself and then others.
Bernie was funny and slightly damaged if it comes to her emotional nature. I wished to see her paintings, especially the ones of her and her temporary neighbour, I know I would love those. But we can we her changing through out the story. I think this element made this read more meaningful.
I will check other books of this author as I really liked her style. I'm just not too sure if I'll ever re-read this one.
Come Back To Bed By Kayley Loring is a romantic comedy that I listened to on audio narrated by Mackenzie Cartwright and Teddy Hamilton.
This is the first book of Kayley's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. The story pulled me in and I had to know how it was going to end.
The book is classified as a romantic comedy but I didn't really get that while listening to it. But I still loved the sweet romance. It gave me all the feels.
Mackenzie and Teddy did an amazing job on the narration. They really bought the story to life.
Oh I just loved this one! It was so sweet and the story just captivated me! Kayley Loring really balances humor and sweet hot romance so well! This story has so many things I love in a good romance: a meet cute, slow burn, opposites attract, a quirky cast of characters(including hilarious old ladies!) scorching chemistry, and an adorable dog. I am so glad I now own this audiobook, cuz it is definitely worthy of a re-read! (re-listen!) Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright slayed this audio! SO SO GOOD!! 5 stars, highly recommend! Give me more of this team: Author Kayley Loring and narrators Teddy & Mackenzie! **Swoon! #AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsessionReviewer
Another sweet, sexy romance from Kayley Loring! Her books are quickly becoming my happy place, and this one made me laugh, smile and swoon. I loved it!
This is the second book in the Brooklyn Boyfriends series, but is a complete standalone from the first, with no character crossover at all, so it can absolutely be read on its own.
Bernadette and Matt find themselves temporary neighbours when he moves into his aunt’s empty apartment following a relationship breakup. Apart from Bernadette’s instant love for Matt’s beloved dog, they have absolutely nothing in common – she is a quirky and creative painter who thinks she’s in love with her boss, he is a seemingly serious and closed-off lawyer getting over a long-term relationship. They don’t get off to a good start, but there is attraction there, and after flirting, teasing, epic banter, lusty glances, and one hot-as-hell kiss, they agree to a no-strings arrangement where they act on their mad lust for each other, with no expectations.
The chemistry between these two is sizzling, and the sex is off the charts hot. They are both feeling it, but Bernadette is adamant that they keep their emotional distance. And we can all see where the story goes from here…
It’s not a unique set-up, but it’s so much fun, and it’s really well done. Matt and Bernadette are great characters, and they have a great dynamic that is playful and flirty. They don’t hold back their attraction, and the banter is so entertaining. We soon see that Matt is not the cold and serious man we met at the beginning of the book – he is sweet, funny, thoughtful and caring, and I absolutely loved him. And Bernadette is funny and quirky, yet relatable. These two made me smile so many times, and I loved seeing them together.
Their non-relationship very easily becomes a friendship, which very easily becomes more. But as much as they may care about each other, opening their hearts completely is not so easy.
This is such a cute read. It’s fun, sweet and sexy, and I laughed so many times as I fell in love with these characters and their story. There’s a bit of drama as they both do some soul-searching and figure out what they want from each other, but it’s short-lived and resolved beautifully, and I finished this book feeling so satisfied, with a huge smile on my face.
I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright, and they do a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. It’s such a fun book to listen to.
Kayley Loring writes such a fun, sexy characters!! Come Back to Bed is perfectly titled. Bernadette and Matt first become neighbours, then friends with benefits and then more, and I loved every moment.
Bernadette is artistic, quirky and such a fun relatable character. Matt is recovering from a broken heart. He doesn't know how to deal with his feelings after the end of his relationship. He seems a little lost and unapproachable at first but Bernadette sees a softer side to him and is patient with him. I adored the quiet moments between them, the funny banter and their chemistry once it becomes physical is hot and steamy! I loved the pacing of the whole story. The development and pacing was perfect. Bernadette’s and Matt’s relationship is beautiful and turns into the most unexpected love.
The scenes with Bernadette's parents were fabulous! I could not stop laughing!
Mackenzie Cartwright and Teddy Hamilton narrate this audiobook. There voices were perfect for these characters! Engaging, humourous, and tender in those vulnerable sweet moments. I love them and cannot wait for the next one.
Wasn’t much of a romance. I rarely have an afternoon free to just enjoy a good romance. Today, was that day. Sadly, this was not that good romance. It just went on and on and on, all the while, going nowhere. Bernadette was, as Matt so very often pointed out, very weird. Matt was, as Bernadette often mentioned, an A-hole. The only likable one in the story, seems to be Matt’s Aunt Dolly. But, she doesn’t appear often enough to be of any real interest. Finally, about halfway through this romance-that-isn’t, I gave up. Not a book I could even finish, much less, recommend.
I laughed and swooned hard. This was a perfect Saturday read! I fell hard for all these characters and this book will definitely be in my re-read pile!
Bernadette is a hoot! I loved her character she is smart, witty, and a creative soul. Matt is hands down incredible, hot, smart, and all mine!!!
This book was hands down freaking amazing! I was in a bit of a book and podcast slump! Kayley Loring got me right out of bed! The two main characters are as opposite as they come, but man do they sparks fly. I highly recommend this one!
3.5 stars. Things start off uncomfortably slow with Matt and Bernadette. This quirky couple is seriously emotionally constipated. Their relationship thankfully finally starts coming together in the last 20% of the story. In between there are some grins from some of the goofy, funny side characters. And a few laugh out loud moments from awkward Bernadette. This author makes you work for it, but in the end I was glad I stuck with it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
More straightforward than the first book (Rebound with Me), but still fun! It’s not a kooky good girl + bad boy pairing, but somehow still had that vibe? Plus I am weak for the “taking care of the other person when they’re sick” micro trope, and this one was 🧑🍳😘.
(Catching up on reviews of December reads, so thoughts will be scattered.)
A cute, quick, fresh story which was exactly what I needed at the moment to lighten my mood. It was funny and sexy and I enjoyed myself with those two. I can’t say there was anything too exceptional or over the top about this book but the audio performance was good and it’s always a pleasure to listen to Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright. They sure heightened the experience with this story and played the part of each character perfectly.
Bernadette and Matt were such polar opposites but they somehow clicked together. Their banter and witty exchanges left me with a huge grin on my face. They were trying to fight this attraction between them for quite some time but eventually succumbed to the emotions that were inevitable. It was nice to watch them finally admit their feelings.
If you read this book, definitely pick the audio version. The story itself was around 2.5-3* - sweet, cute, light and sexy, but it was the audio that made this experience one that I really enjoyed. If you need a light, humorous read to cheer you up and put a smile on your face, then this would definitely be the read for you. The audio performance was really good. Don’t miss it.

My Thoughts A wonderful surprise. Both characters were easy to like and the book was extremely engaging, I wasn't bored and I loved the plot.
Dear Kayley Loring: Get a better book cover designer. I nearly didn't read this book because I thought it would be as stupid as the cover.
I'm glad I ignored my first instinct on this. Because this book is fantastic!
On the surface, the plot is a cliche: hot lawyer meets quirky artist/executive assistant, they're neighbors, then friends with benefits, then fall in love.
But in romance, as in most things in life, execution matters. And the execution on this is AMAZING.
Yes, Matt is a hot lawyer. But he's also coming out of a relationship where his selfish girlfriend strung him along. He's gruff, caring and plays the guitar. You don't often see a left brain/right brain combination in most romance novels-- either you get the artist or the lawyer/businessman. He's also not a player/man-whore.
Bernadette is a quirky artist. But she's also insanely structured and focused on being executive assistant/ work-wife to a world-famous artist (who she has a huge crush on, and who isn't interested in her). She's a dog lover, which becomes a major part of the plot (Matt has a dog).
They become neighbors when Matt has to sublet an apartment next to Bernadette's after he breaks up with the girlfriend he was living with.
Their interaction and conversations are funny, but not overly banter-y.
Like most romances, this book has a quirky cast of friends and oddball parents. But the book doesn't resort to cliches. Bernadette's parents might be hippies who forget to pay their bills and talk about their feelings all the time, but they're also loving, supportive and kind. Matt's parents might be uptight and type-A, but they're also caring and supportive. At the same time, I really enjoyed that Loring allowed me to wallow in disliking the characters I wanted to dislike (aka Matt's ex, Vanessa).
The last 5% is a little corny, but overall I thought it was great. You see the progression in the characters, and how they come together.
I also give Loring major props for writing a hero who's both confident/comfortable with himself and vulnerable. It's rare that you can thread the needle so well, and she does it.
So all in all, beautifully written characters with a decent enough plot well executed.
Come Back to Bed was my first book by Kayley Loring and it won’t be my last. I loved “Come Back to Bed” and both of the leading characters, Matt and Bernadette. The author is a very clever writer and pulled me in from the very beginning. The characters were smart, witty, engaging, and on a journey of self-discovery and finding their soul mate. I had off work today for a snow-day and read this straight through all morning.
Matt was an attorney who moved into his aunt’s home after being dumped by his live-in girlfriend. I liked how he was not only handsome and very well built (the visual descriptions were excellent), but also educated, thoughtful, funny, patient, and loyal. I loved how he loved his dog and how he admired Bernadette’s artistic talent and uniqueness. He was not a player nor a billionaire which was refreshing.
Bernadette was a tough nut to crack but I loved how open and honest she was, and how as the reader, you knew exactly what she was thinking and why. I would love to be her friend in real life. She had some issues to work through, but was also smart and talented, a good friend, a hard worker, and an awesome temporary neighbor to Matt.
Bernadette’s parents cracked me up and I liked how both leads had parents who were actually alive and that nothing tragic happened to them growing up. This seems to be the theme of so many books today after the success of Fifty Shades, and it was refreshing to have both sets of parents, plus his aunt, her employer, and their friends as secondary characters.
I loved Matt and Bernadette together and was routing for them the entire time. Their sexy times were all that and more! I could feel their connection and attraction on every page. They were friends and lovers, and I loved all of their conversations and times together. They did go through a bit of a rough patch at the end, but I liked how they were honest with their feelings and didn’t play games, and how they eventually got their own HEA with everything coming full circle.
This book is currently FREE on KU which is how I read it, but I liked it so much, I purchased a copy for only 99 cents so I can re-read it in the future. Well done Kayley!
1.5 stars. Good story line premise, poor execute with main characters. I didn't care for either mc. I didn't care for their "romance" or should I say neighbors with benefits bc both are too scared and are such weak character to admit they care about each other for more than sex until the end! Loved the aunt, loved Daisy didn't love the rest.
Realized that I was almost a quarter through this book and both characters are annoying, their interactions are annoying and there is no way I am going to buy that there is any connection or chemistry between them so cutting my losses now.
