Magic. Vampires. Fallen empires and dangerous prophecies. Fans of The Vampire Diaries, A Shade of a Vampire, and Twilight will be blown away by A Witch Between Worlds...
A desperate attempt at salvation has brought tragedy to Stonehold Castle.
Clara Blackwell sleeps an unnatural sleep, led deeper into her dreams by a figure from her past. Driven into powerful mourning, Elliott struggles to balance watching over her slumbering body with ruling over a vampire civilization, in a world where magic enhances everything – especially the vicious, dangerous wildlife.
But events have begun to shift on the global scale. No longer can Elliott Craven ignore the threat of the other vampire lords – powerful enemies eager to get their hands on the world’s single human being, no matter the cost.
As Clara and Elliott triumphantly reunite, they must face down deception and danger both near and far, for the night is dark and determined to destroy them. By a cruel twist of fate, their greatest strengths may be the thing that threatens to unravel them…
Okay so the romance is a lot faster than I would like. I had a niggling feeling it would be but I had held out hope. It's not like, awful, but eh. It's not as in my face as a lot of other fast paced love confessions, since a big focus is on what's happening in the world and the mysterious angle of things the author is going for. Anyway, the big perk to this series so far is that plot-based events are given their due to happen and things constantly seem to build. 200+ pages of more events and information to build up on the last 200+, which makes me want to continue with the series. It doesn't yet seem super predictable or contrived.
But, as always, at only 1/5 of this "season" down, there's still ample room for things to take a turn for the worst. We'll see how book #3 fares.
I do like the writing, even if some of the more modern terminology used really takes me out of the immersion. Like again, I know Clara is a teenager from contemporary England, but I want to feel the immersion of the fantasy world more than I need vernacular based reminders that this popped out of 2017. But that's just sort of my bone with most "modern human woman in other world" stories.
One thing I am enjoying so far is that Elliot isn't an infallible leader; a lot of books always make a character in a leadership role who's important (or the love interest) be the most capable, intelligent ruler ever and they rarely make oversights, but Elliot is still coming into his position so it makes him more interesting.
A thing I did really dislike though is the approach to Nikki's "madness" because it feels like a caricature of mental illness, but perhaps the point isn't that she's mentally ill so much as she's like unpredictably bloodlusting and violent? I don't know. It doesn't quite feel good to me.
What I have come to realize is that while I love witches I predominately get my witch fix from tv and movies. I haven't read that many books that are centered on witches and out of all the book I own I only have a few series about witches. I don't know why that is, I mean one of my favorite book series is Sweep and it's centered on witches. So I now know I need to fix this situation and I started when I got the first book in the Witch Between Worlds series.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series, The Vampire's Witch. The book did have a lot of vampires but I expect a lot more of the unexpected because of the name of the series, so I decided to continue on with the series. Trials of the Vampire picks up with Clara in a magical comma, Elliot is beside himself with worry for Clara and everyone else who knows Clara is fairly upset with the situation.
In the first book I got a glimpse of the worlds both Clara's and Elliot's through them explaining their own world and Clara studying of the world around her. In Trials of the Vampire a got to see a little bit more of the world and some of the other important players in the book that could cause problems the people of Stonehold.
What makes this book so interesting is Clara, she is a peculiar character. She has instincts that she trust but she is just so polite and is very mature. Clara thinks things through and consider those around her. She really didn't have family on her own world but have made these vampires her family. While Elliot is different that what one would expect to. Elliot is the king but he knows he needs help and he asks for it. He listens to Clara and takes her opinion on things very seriously. The two have a deep respect for each other and they are just so cute together.
With leaders making power-plays, Lorelei being aloof about the situation, Nikki being her crazy-self, the deep connection between Clara and Elliot, a shady plot being hatched and many other things brings together a story that is a fun quick read that I enjoy. It's not an emotional heavy book but I still find myself absolutely invested. Trials of the Vampire is just a part to a bigger story and I will be reading the rest of the series. I really want to see the other holds, I want more Clara and Elliot and with the mysterious ending that happened in Trials of the Vampire I know a whole lot more action will be happening.
This book picks up right where we left off on book one. This book does not include snippets of the previous book for context so not something you can read and throughly enjoy as a single book read. This is YA safe and enjoyable read.
What’s Inside: 🗡️ Vampire x Human Romance 🗡️ Action Scenes 🗡️ Political Drama 🗡️ Family Drama 🗡️ Friendship Development 🗡️ Splash of Comedy 🗡️ No Spice / YA 🗡️ Magic x Witchcraft
Spoilers: This book has more action and political content than the first book which made it even more enjoyable. It’s not hard to follow the politics like other fantasy books. This book we finally confirmed Clara the FMC is a witch but don’t see her participating in magic herself. The friendship Clara builds is endearing and further builds on her child like innocence. Silly Willy is my favorite character since he always has something smart to say 😂 Nikki is still killing it in this book! We get way more family dynamics of the royals. The character development of Nikki was chefs kiss 🫡❤️
This was a solid 4 ⭐️ We still have that awkward age gap and attempts to justify 17 as an adult but MLC mentioning she’s only a child after several make out sessions 👀 We finally get into the magic aspect of the story but don’t get any magic or witchcraft from our FMC Clara 💔 Despite the above icks I loved the story flow and progress speed. The balanced action, romance, and politics made it an easy enjoyable read… or listen 😂🎧
Side Note: Narration by Rafe Buckley was phenomenal with the female POV and male POV all in perfect European accents 😂🫡 Well done sir

*written in multi POV* Book 2 picks up where book 1 left off.
While Clara is still comatose, Elliott still has to perform his duties to his Hold. This leads him to discover a creature planted in the mines. Although he is able to defeat the enemy, at great costs, he has no idea who would launch such an attack.
Meanwhile, Nikki and Sabean are constantly meeting privately, or so they think. They both have their own hidden agendas and are using each other to meet their own goal. Once everything was revealed, it turned out one had insidious intentions, and the other was trying to help in their own way. The traitor ends up being dealt with and sheds light on another vampire lord's obsessive will to take Clara.
The relationship between Elliott and Clara begins to pick up a little qith a stolen kiss here and there. Just as fast as it picked up, it had to come to an end due to the other vampire lords wanting to "see" her, which would come to no good. So the only way Elliott could think of to protect Clara was to send her home.
With the traitor gone and Clara out of harms way, what else could go wrong? Will the other lords accept the fact that she is gone, or will the vampire world be doomed to go to war?
Will Clara actually be safe? It is hard to say now that an unknown is introduced. What or where is this unknown place? Why are they interested in traveling from one world to the next? What type of trouble will Clara be in now?
On to the next book to see where the adventures will lead me next!
"Trials of the Vampire" is an engaging fantasy story that kept my interest from the start. The book follows a protagonist who explores a world with vampires and witches, dealing with the effects of their magical powers.
The characters are well-written, each with unique backgrounds and reasons for their actions. The author explores their relationships and the challenges they face, making it easy to connect with them. The world-building is detailed, with vivid descriptions that draw the reader into a place where magic can be both helpful and harmful.
The plot moves quickly, with twists that keep you guessing. The characters undergo intense trials that raise questions about loyalty and the nature of good and evil.
The writing is easy to read and keeps the reader engaged. The dialogue feels natural, and the characters’ thoughts provide useful insights into their struggles.
Overall, "Trials of the Vampire" is a thrilling fantasy book. It has strong characters, a well-structured plot, and a rich world. I look forward to the next book in the series! If you enjoy supernatural stories, this book is worth reading.
This book was definitely better than the first one. There seemed to be a purpose to the characters’ actions and events. It was obvious there was a prior part of the story and that there will be more to come, but there was also a succinct plot to this book.
It’s important to mention I’m listening to the audiobook version of the books, and this is one case where I think the narrator is distracting from the main character. The narrator reads Clara very matter-of-fact, even when events are highly emotional. It’s makes her feel one note and rather boring. I’d have chalked it up to the narrator’s limited female voice, but Nicky comes across alive and multifaceted, as she was written. She is clearly my favorite character in the series thus far.
So I’m not loving, but I’m not hating the series, and I’m trying to determine if part of what keeps me in the middle is the narrator’s portrayal of the characters.
Trials of the Vampire picks up with Clara in a perilous state, leaving Elliot and others frantic. Building on the world-building from the first book, we delve deeper into Stonehold and its intriguing characters.
Clara is a captivating protagonist: thoughtful, mature, and fiercely loyal to her adopted vampire family. Elliot, unexpectedly supportive and receptive, complements her perfectly. Their dynamic is both endearing and respectful.
The story is a fast-paced blend of intrigue and character development. While not emotionally heavy, it keeps readers engaged with its intriguing plot and lovable characters. The cliffhanger ending leaves me eager to explore the other Holds and continue the adventures of Clara and Elliot.
The writing is still poor. Hardly anything actually happened in this book. It is just a bunch of wasted space. One major even took place, but it was rushed, there was no intrigue, the lead up to this one thing that happened could have been enormously fun if the author could do it. Unfortunately the story drug on. There are little nuggets of what is to come that makes the story interesting but they are just dropped in. Ugh. I really think this story has potential. I really hope the author got a bit better in the next book.
Nothing really happened! I gave book 2 a go on Kindle because I hoped the misery of book 1 was caused by the awful narration (male) Nope, book 2 was equally disappointing.
The whole premise of a 500+yr old falling passionately in love with a 16/17 yr old girl also gives me the ick. Especially when coupled with the notion that on his world 17 is a child!
Sorry, but despite the rave reviews, I just can't bring myself to give the rest of the series a go!
This was Book 2/3 in the series. Book 3 is not yet out! This book was great! A vampire/ paranormal romance with mystery and action and suspense! And a drop ending! Oh I wonder how long it will take for book 3!!! The characters are well developed and you begin to really like them after 2 books. It’s going to dive me crazy this unfinished ending!
A good amount of action and monsters as well as finding out more about the characters. My only grievance is the lack of research done. A quick Google search would tell you the legal age to buy and consume alcohol in the UK is 18. As this is a point used in the book about what Clara can do at age 17 I think getting the facts correct is important.
The book is engaging and the only thing that driving crazy is when the mad hatter princess loss her claim to the throne. She loss her title as princess and punish. She is my favorite character yet the loss of her title was a hard blow. Now who is the heir to the thron as the only she was strip of her born right
Continues to be just okay. Characters lack the depth that helps me connect with and care about what happens to them. I do think the narrator (listening on Audible) helps make the characters toneless and emotionless, but I think either way, I'd feel the same about the characters. Story is okay, it's an interesting concept, but still continuing only because I got the box set.
What a great read ! Loved it great characters, well written. Characters you feel you know and feel all their emotions. Even shed a tear at the end Highly recommend
What can I say, this book made me smile, laugh and cry. I became so invested in the characters I felt like they became friends. I cannot wait until I can see what happens with Clara and Elliott.
Really good sequel! Good book! It ends on a cliffhanger like the first one so make sure you get the next one if you plan on reading all of them, otherwise it will drive you insane not knowing what happens next. Definitely recommend reading it though!
Pleasantly surprised, I'm am enjoying the series got the the first one on a whim never read any of this authors books. Both 1 and 2 in series were good now waiting 3rd one.
And so it leaves us... Again no dangle but a must move forward. I grew to love these characters all the more and can't wait until I visit their world again.
But, but, but... They have to be together!!!! I'm invested dammit. 😉 The writing and plot are amazing. I'm drawn in like I know these people. I can't stop....on to book 3.
