In 1992 he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for his short stories collection, "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature. He now lives with his adopted family in Landour near Mussoorie.
Rating it 4.5 because in the middle section the pace of the book was a little slow. The book is a recollection of Ruskin Bond’s childhood. Throughout his books, I read bits and parts about his childhood and was eager to read it as a whole. This books granted my wish. Also, by the end I cried because certain incidents through the book made me sad and wanting to give the younger Ruskin Bond a hug.
No matter how many times and in how many different books you read about Ruskin Bond's childhood and early youth days, it always feels refreshing. He has the magic of writing about the same incident in a way that it always feels as new. Same is with this book. It has a detailed account of his childhood days and a brief account of his living in a room on the roof before going to England. He has written this book after crossing the age of eighty. He relives the days of his childhood through this book, when the life was carefree, and he used to hear many tales from the cook, the ayah, and he adopted the habit of long walks with his father, who inculcated the love for Nature in him through these walks. He longs for his beautiful school days while being the part of 'Four Feathers'. He tells about his usual and unusual friendships. This book is full of nostalgia. This ever-amazing story is illustrated beautifully by Sunaina Coelho. You get to see the chubby little Ruskin gobbling cookies, a naughty boy Ruskin looking through the windows of many colours while wandering through the ruins of a palace in Jamnagar, and a growing young Ruskin having his first dance at a ball in Dehra. This book is sure to stay with you for long. I am loving it 💖
A very interesting group going deeply in his (RUSKIN BOND) early life and childhood followed by his early youth...Best for young kids and teenagers looking for motivation in life
