The Gilded Age comes to life in this first installment of the Thousand Islands Series!
Katelyn Kavanagh’s mother dreamed her daughter would one day escape the oppressive environment of their Upstate New York farm for service in the enchanting Thousand Islands, home to Gilded Age millionaires. But when her wish comes true, Katelyn finds herself in the service of none other than the famous George Pullman, and the transition proves anything but easy.
Thomas O’Neill, brother of her best friend, is all grown up and also working on Pullman Island. Despite Thomas’ efforts to help the irresistible Katelyn adjust to the intricacies of her new world, she just can’t seem to tame her gossiping tongue—even when the information she’s privy to could endanger her job, the 1872 re-election of Pullman guest President Ulysses S. Grant, and the love of the man of her dreams.
Written for the General Market (G): Contains little or no; sexual dialogue or situations, violence, or strong language.

A very enjoyable and astounding story. I knew nothing of these islands let alone the history of them. A very engaging story about Pullman Island, originally called Sweet Island before the Pullman's purchased it in 1849. The great occasion that is told is true, but not the story about those that actually worked for the Pullman family. The story pulls you in and I stayed up to the wee hours to finish the book. Katelyn has a problem keeping confidence with which she has always battled. This story delves into asking the Lord for guidance, praying then believing it can happen, letting go and letting God - what can happen if we allow that to happen. The book is not overtly religious or preachy, but just subtlety praying and faith by some of the characters. A very good book that I would definitely recommend to any reader. I did receive an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary and honest review with my own personal thoughts and opinions. Vicki from Wyoming
Author Susan Mathis allows us to travel back to 1872 and see the world through the eyes of a young woman in service. I could sympathize with Katelyn and her difficulty keeping her tongue in check. It can be so challenging sometimes. Mathis shows us how to do that by use of prayer and scripture. While not in the least preachy, we see that God wants to walk with us and help us in our times of need. And Katelyn isn’t the only one with some challenges.
Very well-developed characters who grow personally and spiritually make this story come to life. The author’s research of the time frame and area of the country enhanced the story greatly. I enjoyed learning about the Thousand Islands, and imagining what it would have been like to have the president visit for a few days.
If you enjoy clean historical fiction with sweet romance, and a story that has a satisfying ending, then you’ll enjoy Katelyn’s Choice.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Meticulous historical research immerses readers in a time of elegance, beauty, and tender romance in Susan G Mathis's charming novella, A Summer at Thousand Island House. Through the perspective of the staff, the complexities of doing what's right without compromising beliefs come to life. Unexpected twists pave the way for a heartwarming conclusion that will leave readers grinning. Mathis's delightful writing style is a refreshing sip of iced tea on a hot summer day, making this novella a perfect fit for fans of Christian historical romance.
Katelyn Kavanagh is struggling to accept the death of her mother. Her father and brothers have always treat her poorly. She needs to get away. Fortunately she has a chance to improve her prospects. She and her Irish twin have been offered employment by George M. Pullman at his summer residence. When she goes to this estate on one of the Thousand Islands she enters a world where she struggles with the class distinction between the wealthy and their servants. Will she find herself and be able to tame her loose tongue? I enjoyed Katelyn’s inspirational story as she matures and finds love. I especially loved the interaction between Katelyn and the Pullman girls. The book is filled with interesting historical facts on the Gilded Age and the wealthy who summered there. Katelyn is drawn to a childhood acquaintance, Thomas, who works on the Island. The interaction between the characters isn’t always easy. Their emotions get in the way. The dialogue is realistic and honest. I enjoyed Katelyn’s Choice. It is well written. Susan G. Mathis does a wonderful job. She’s able to combine fact and fiction into a riveting story. I’m looking forward to the next book in the Thousand Island Gilded Age Series.
"Let me welcome you to Pullman Island, home of the famous George M. Pullman of the Pullman railroad car fame!"
"Beyond the boundaries of the small island, out on the St. Lawrence, boats passed on either side, and in the distance, a huge cargo ship made its way along the main shipping channel between the mainland and the island."
"I have invited President Ulysses S. Grant to be our guest and enjoy respite here from his re-election campaign."
"It is your day to celebrate God’s grand creation here on the mighty St. Lawrence River and in the majestic Thousand Islands."
"President Grant gazed wistfully out the window. “This blue bosom of the mighty St. Lawrence held me in its spell all the night long, enchanting me with a dream of a quiet piece of heaven and that of calmer affairs than I have had in a long while. Pullman, old chap, you respite on one of the myriads of gems you call an island. I call it a bit of paradise.”

“Katelyn’s Choice” is a wonderfully written book. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and so want to know more about Katelyn’s future.
Katelyn’s mother has recently died, she is left living on the farm with her father and brothers who are not very nice people; her mother told her to escape the farm and go and see the “enchanted Thousand Islands. Katelyn is lucky enough to be offered a summer job on the Island as a servant to the very famous and rich Pullman family. Katelyn works hard as part of the kitchen staff, gets promoted to the serving staff and is sometimes nanny to the two Pullman little girls. Thomas is also working there along with his sister, Katelyn’s best friend. It does not take long for Katelyn and Thomas to have sparks fly between them in both good and bad ways. There is much work to be done on Pullman Island as President Ulysses S. Grant is coming for a visit and this requires much preparation and excitement. Katelyn finds herself in several awkward situations but always manages to pull herself out successfully.
If you enjoy romance, history, God’s scripture and characters that will win you over than you must read “Katelyn’s Choice”. Susan G Mathis has given us the reader a gift of a great book and I can hardly wait for the next installment of the Gilded Age in the Thousand Island series. The late 1800s came alive and made me both long for those past days of glory and start to plan a vacattion to the Thousand Islands so I could see for myself the magnificence of the area. Please, please do not pass up reading “Katelyn’s Choice”; it is a winner for young adults and old alike.
This is a very well written book that holds your attention all the way to the end. I loved the element of faith in this book. If you enjoy clean historical fiction you will love this book. This is a new to me author and I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Enjoyed reading this book! The girl has to watch her tongue and not gossip. Her boyfriend has problems too. I recommend this book to anyone who likes romance!
Katelyn's Choice is the relatable tale of an enthusiastic, aspiring young women just embarking on her life's adventure. Opportunity for employment on Pullman Island, one of the Thousand Islands, serving the family of George Pullman enables Katelyn's escape from a difficult past, but will her weakness for sharing a good story threaten her new friendships and budding relationship? I truly enjoyed Susan Mathis' wholesome historical novel and look forward to future stories in the Thousand Islands Series!
Author Susan Mathis sweeps readers away to the fabled Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River where class distinctions cut as deeply between the wealthy and their servants as the great river’s channel between the mainland and the jeweled summer playgrounds of America’s Gilded Age. When Katelyn Kavanaugh finds herself employed by the famous George Pullman on Pullman Island, she also discovers that her gossiping tongue can cause unimaginable trouble and possibly cost her the man she loves.
Working for the summer at the Thousand Island House resort is a dream for Addi, as she knows working with the children will help keep at bay some of her loneliness from losing her father. She also dearly loves working with children and hopes to have some of her own one day. Her arrival, a little later than expected, gives her a few unexpected encounters that don't all necessarily bode well.
Addi steps into her role with gusto, often being reminded of the rules of the resort. There seems to be many. And the gentleman who keeps reminding her is Liam Donavan, her boss. However, he puts her in a conundrum as at times he seems interested in a relationship with her and others she is just another employee, that he talks over.
Not only is Addi trying to have the children enjoy their summer and keeping them busy and safe, but there are also jealousies afoot and another man whose interests in her are much more than being a nanny. This was a quick and interesting story of a summer spent during the Gilded Age at a resort and what that may have looked like for a young woman looking to make it in the world.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
With a title that sounds like it came from a fantastic old movie, I had to read this book. It's also part of a very good series. Addi's goal is the children, which is why she took this summer position. Then there's sudden so many new people, a man who might win her heart. Things were going well, until her young charge, Jimmy, vanishes. What nanny/teacher loses a child? What is Addi to do?
By this point I'm thinking that God's fast tracking her prayer for Him to change her life this summer, because her life is irrevocably changed at this point. One moral here is to use wisdom when you pray! While it's a lovely historical romance, with good drama and mystery, A Summer at Thousand Island House also has strong faith themes. God does't fail us and we are called to do what's right. I enjoyed this latest book in this lovely series.
Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my digital version of this book. This review is mine and a positive review is not required.
Katelyn Kavanagh's moves back to Thousand Islands, home to Gilded Age millionaires. She finds herself in the service of George Pullman. Thomas O'Neill's brother of Katelyn's best friend is also working on Pullman Island. Gossip doesn't stop, putting Katelyn's job at risk.
I love historical novels. It's a way of getting to know famous figures. Pullman and President Ulysses S. Grant. Add the Bible, and the novel is great. Nothing like a character arch with the power of God involved. The Gilded Age (Referring to a period from the 1870s to about 1900. ) comes to life in this first installment of the Thousand Islands Series!
Written for General Market (G): Contains no; sexual dialogue or situations, violence, or strong language.
Kaitlyn had to grow up and learn to control her opinions during a summer of working at the summer home of the Pullman's one of the Thousand Islands near her home. Escaping the unhappy home life, especially after her mother's recent death, made for a time of struggle in more ways than she would have ever imagined. Throw in a handsome and charming brother of her best friend, both of who were working there as well, and you have quite a story. The kindness, yet strict rules of the household, helped her to learn and mature over a summer filled with expectations of grandeur. President Grant's "Grand Affair" served as a backdrop for many challenges in this young girl's summer.
Katelyn's Choice has a Downton Abbey feel. It brings the Gilded Age to light from the perspective of Katelyn, a young woman in service to the famous and wealthy George Pullman and his family. Katelyn must tame her tongue and overcome her tendency to gossip or risk losing not only her job, but the man she loves.
I did not know about the Thousand Islands, so it was nice to get a historical perspective on them. Susan Mathis has done her research on these islands. Since this is the first book in a series, it will be interesting to see what comes next!
I had a hard time putting this down! I found myself stealing moments while cooking dinner or taking a break at work. The description of the Thousand Islands made me feel like I was there. The imagery in Susan's words is spectacular. I could envision it all, from the veranda to the kitchen, the dock to the main house. The characters are likeable and engaging, and relatable. The journey of Katelyn is carefully woven as she addresses the challenges and opportunities before her. Very enjoyable read!
I met Susan Mathis at a museum in Clayton NY in the Thousand Islands while vacationing. I bought her book and loved it. The description of the area was spot on, along with seeing barges and pleasures boats going by. We also went on on 2-1/2 hour narrated tour around that area and heard many of the same things as Thomas was describing. Nice story for young adults mixed in with the history. Also, I was told this is #1 of a trilogy! Looking forward to #2#3.
Loved this book. I live in New York, but have never been to the Thousand Islands. The story was entertaining and very informative. Katelyn is a great character, but must learn to curb her voice. With the help if Thomas and her superiors, she will ask for God's help and learn to love and call the island her home.
To be honest I found this book rather boring. As the story progressed I found myself speed reading chunks of descriptions which may have been historically correct but boring. Also I kept waiting for something to happen but it never did
I really did not like Katelyn, but found that most of the other characters were more likeable. I appreciated reading about the "real" Pullman Island and some of the things that occurred there.
Sometimes the mind needs a gorgeous setting, a sweet romance, and a reminder of solid biblical truths that keep us on solid ground. Katelyn’s Choice is all that. A terrific beach read or one worthy of curling up beside a wintry fire.
I was drawn into an era that was fascinating! Such grandeur! My family loves the islands to begin with, so it was interesting to get some fiction along with a history.
I didn't know about the islands in the St Lawrence River, but they sound like a great place to visit. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading more stories in this series. Thanks.
A Summer at Thousand Island House (Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts Book 4) by Susan G Mathis is part of a series that has several authors contributing stories. Differ place or resort but all take place in the same time period. Addi Bell the main female character is a wonderful nanny who is also a charming teacher. I so appreciated her love of life, bestowing the same enthusiasm through her teaching the children staying at the Thousand Island House. It was impossible for resort manager Liam Donovan not to fall in love with her too.
Besides these two main characters there is a host of children especially Jimmy to love too. This Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts is like the other books in that it has a bit of suspense and mystery to go along with the clean romance. Such an entertaining historical read.
The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
This book was a delightful, quick read! The story was short and to the point. I found a couple of the sudden twists to be exciting. I can tell a lot of research was put into the writing of this.
