When former U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers was caught in the explosion of an alien Kree device, she was imbued with incredible superhuman powers. As Captain Marvel and an Avenger she uses her gifts to protect the planet. Marvel Platinum: The Definitive Captain Marvel brings together the very best tales from the hero's 50 plus-year history, including the greatest adventures of the original Captain Marvel, the Kree warrior Mar-Veil, as well as the other heroes have gone by the name of Captain Marvel. Brace yourselves for action on a truly intergalactic scale!
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Fascinating to have this book, linked to the other Captain Marvel book I got recently. So interesting to have origin stories and to see the evolution of a character over 50odd years.
Frankly this is all over the place: the silver age and bronze age stuff is wonderful, the Death of Captain Marvel is just a beautiful, strange thing but the more recent stuff is a complete mess. There’s no real sense of how the characters interrelate, and the tonal shifts are jarring and sometimes dizzying. Honestly it’s just a ludicrous idea to try and tidily sum up three wildly different characters in one volume. The truth is in the subtext of the written pieces, in that the reason Marvel kept going with characters under this name is because otherwise they’d lose the copyright on it back to DC. As a collection it’s a failure, just one with some incredible moments (and Death remains one of the oddest and boldest things a mainstream comic company could ever think of starting their graphic novel imprint with)
Id give this a 2.5 star rating, goes into great detail of some characters and shows us the backstory. It was a really interesting book with also a lot of information. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about marvel characters, specifically the captain marvels.
