If you have ever attempted to grow a bonsai tree, you know that sometimes it can be frustrating. Often you don't know exactly what to do or how to proceed. Your tree may sadly, even die. This can be avoided though by reading Bonsai: The Complete Step By Step Guide for Beginners by Hikaru Yamasaki. The author has done a thorough job of presenting the steps needed to succeed in growing a beautiful bonsai tree. The beginning of the book focuses on the history of bonsai trees, first originating in China, with Japan refining the tradition, and truly making it part of Japanese culture along with Zen Buddhism. The balance of the book focuses on the cultivating and caring for a bonsai tree. There are plenty of directions and instructions that will help you on your way to creating and growing the perfect bonsai tree. With five different styles of bonsai growing represented you are sure to find one you like. Highly recommend for an informative yet easy to read guide.

Useful introduction
As a long-time admirer of bonsai as well as a proven record of unsuccessful attempts with inexpensive commercial bonsais, I want to try this art form again. I found the book very informative and encouraging. There are some very strange sentences encountered from time to time but they do not take away from the overall experience of reading this book. I look forward to applying the principles presented and having a resource I can refer back to whether I am successful or not.

There is no doubt the fascination Bonsai trees hold. With Bonsai: The Complete Step by Step Guide for Beginners, this ancient skill can be gained by anyone wishing to take the time to learn its secrets. Hikaru Yamasaki expounds on the history of this art and the care that must be given before embarking on growing these miniature trees. There is a skill that is required to attain the trees that are pictured, and detailed instructs are given to care for these trees.
I was hesitant reading Bonsai: The Complete Step by Step Guide for Beginners as I do not have a green thumb, no matter how much I wish I did. But Hikaru Yamasaki’s detailed coaching gives me hope. With care these trees can live for a long period, but it is noteworthy they acquire attention and care. I find this may be an ideal hobby for those who have a tendency over nurture their plants, at least that is my hope. Informative and helpful, excellent training for those who wish to take on this unique pastime.

Author Hikaru Yamasaki makes this ‘beginners guide’ for creating bonsai one of the most complete resources of information about all aspects of the art of bonsai, while simultaneously offering the spiritual qualities that creating bonsai represents. “Bonsai teaches you patience and perseverance due to its long-term cultivation. However, it’s worth the wait, as its beauty and appearance bring peace and harmony to whoever sees it. It brings humans to a state of awareness and mindfulness.”
And in that sensitive atmosphere Hikaru offers a detailed history of this art as it began in China, Japan, and into the Western World, the bonsai styles (and there are many!), the types of bonsai, how to select a bonsai tree, the tools needed, a fine section on cultivation from the correct soil to use to the several ways to initiate the process, how to prune and trim, the art of wiring for shape determination, watering and fertilizing, seasonal care, the issue of repotting, and the very important manners of presentation of the bonsai.
Well-written and easy to read and accompanied by beautiful color photographs of different bonsai creations, this book is an excellent guide – both for creating and caring for bonsai and for the spiritual accoutrements Hikaru emphasizes. Highly Recommended.
