Venema is Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Doctrinal Studies at Mid-America Reformed Seminary, Dyer, Indiana. He gained his doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary for work on the theology of John Calvin and has served as a pastor in the Christian Reformed Church in Ontario, California, and South Holland, Illinois.

După cum sugerează și titlul, cartea de față e un scurt comentariu pe marginea canoanelor de la Dort.

În introducere e surprins, în puține rânduri, contextul istoric apariției canoanelor, amintindu-se faptul că ele vin ca o replică la "învățăturile nebiblice ale lui Jacobus Arminius și ale petiționarilor" .

Fiecare afirmație a petiționarilor e tratată în parte, fiind pusă în contrast cu poziția canoanelor și cu suportul biblic al acestei poziții.

Autorul punctează, mai apoi, actualitatea canoanelor și relevanța lor pentru bisericile de azi care stă tocmai în aspectul, aparent paradoxal, al chemării evanghelistice - "Canoanele ne oferă o încurajare la o evanghelizare care este reformată (biblică) în ce privește Autorul ei, reformată în metoda ei și reformată în scopul acesteia" .
Bineînțeles că acesta nu omite nici controversa harului ieftin, demolând această acuzație prin prezentarea echilibrului Biblic al canoanelor. Foarte pe scurt, "Niciun credincios nu-L poate primi pe Hristos ca Mântuitor fără să îl primească în același timp pe Hristos ca Domn" .

Observațiile finale tratează caracterul biblic al canoanelor - acestea fiind "neclintit de biblice" - , rolul lor - "canoanele nu au scopul de a surprinde întreg crezul reformat, ci mai degrabă își propun să clarifice învățătura biblică legată de alegere" - , centrarea lor pe Dumnezeu, și mângâierea pe care o aduce învățătura acestora.

Exprimarea simplă a autorului alături de întrebările de la finalul fiecărui capitol fac din cartea lui Venema un ghid ideal pentru un studiu introductiv asupra canoanelor de la Dort.
Conținutul canoanelor e anexat la final, ceea ce face din această carte un "musai" pentru orice adept al teologiei reformate.

It's good yeah. It's not expansive like Hoeksema, but it's still scholarly enough for learned laymen and pastors to get good value out of.

According to some of the young adults in my church however, it does occupy an "uncanny valley" of being just advanced enough to be boring, but not thorough enough to be a reference book. That is a bit of an issue.

This volume is not a “paragraph-by-paragraph” commentary and it is not going to give the reader the fullest picture of the historical situation of the Synod of Dort. Nonetheless, this brief exposition is readable, accessible, and covers the basics. Further, Venema helpfully addresses modern critiques and modern applications of the Canons. A good, introductory commentary.

The questions for discussion at the end of each chapter are a great addition as well. I plan to use some of them as I lead a class through the Canons.

A Clear Exposition of the Canons of Dort. The book is a great help and encouragement to understand and appreciate the canons. The authors' analysis, discussion questions, and examination of both relevant scriptures and related questions make this a very insightful and practical book. Ideal for your own devotional time or a group study.

This is a good introduction to the theology of the Canons of Dort. If you are looking for a thorough explanation of the historical background, you will want to look elsewhere. But as a simple explanation of the Canons, this is a fantastic resource.

A very good, brief explanation of Canons of Dort. Venema is easy to read. This book is shorter than, and not as thorough as, Godfrey's "Saving the Reformation," but is a solid into into the five points of the Synod of Dort.
