Twenty+ years after its initial publication, the One Small Square series still encourages young readers to pour over the detailed illustrations endlessly. So much learning going on while examining the detailed information/pictures of the flora and fauna revealed one layer at a time -- with additional information at the back of the book. Absorbing and informative.

We loved pouring over all the detail pictures of the species that are broken out by family in the back of the book and putting them to each layer. Soooo much detail offered in this one and sooo much to look at.

Extra information is included in side bars, and at the end of the story. There are activities and experiments for the reader to try, as well.

Our home education is literature based. The curriculum this year is titled "Animals and Their Worlds". The rain forest animals, flora/fauna, topography, geography etc was our second area of study following the African Savannah. This book was a part of our daily read-aloud time.
