Oh the promise of murder mystery and romance makes me decide to pick up this book. Then something does not click entirely with me.

The character development is off. I can not feel the chemistry between Avery and Aiden even with the murder between them. And I think the author tries to justify Aiden kidnapping just because Avery's family reputation. There is a little BDSM aspect in the romance. Not enough to steam up the romance.

And also there is a lot of repeating words that bored me a bit. What i like about this book is the idea of murder mystery and the pace of the book. It is well paced despite the disadavantage of the characters development.

Overall i do enjoy this book OK

Betrayal, by Sarah Bailey bills itself as a "dark romance," which is one of those classic genre definitions that varies greatly on your own perspectives. Let's try not to beat around the bush with this one though, when they say this is "dark", they sure as shit mean it. Avery is a twenty year old heiress to the Mitchell Holdings "real estate" fortune and is dining with her parents in their fabulous penthouse one morning. Events quickly transpire, and her parents are killed, murdered, and Avery is stolen away by the lone gunman. Avery soon wakes up inside a concrete cell, chained and unaware of what awaits her. A man named Aiden approaches the cell, it's time for redemption...and he's got a plan. Step 1 is complete, now it's time for Step 2: It's time to make Avery his.

Yikes. Okay, let's take a second to unpack this a little bit. Before we address the content itself, I want to examine the stylization choices. Betrayal is a back and forth POV, switching between Aiden and Avery, frantically moving the story forward with each chapter. There is no "all knowing" narrator, and that results in more intense and engaging storytelling. First-hand accounts of the proceedings will chill and excite the reader the whole way through. The turmoil of Avery's trauma, and the painfully slow exposition of Aiden's backstory make the entire length of the read hair-raising. With content as intense as this you'd expect a lot of machinery cogs turning in multiple directions to explore it all, and the narrative is quite well done through the lens of only two characters.

(Minor spoilers from here on)

What rattles me the most about Betrayal is that I find so much of it to be completely believable. In a lot of novels of this type, there exists a cartoonish vibe that pats you on the back every now and then to let you know this is all a crazy fantasy, or that there's a more mythic quality you can use to explain away some of the more darker elements. To its credit, Betrayal never lets off the gas pedal, and it's a gritty and realistic exchange throughout. The characters themselves can be a challenge to the reader, but for remarkably relatable reasons. Aiden, setting aside his most of his conduct, is a pained but cocky little fuck that struggles with basic human emotion beyond his own selfish drives. Avery, on the other hand...well I can't really talk about what I think about Avery when she's in a situation like this. How could I critique the feelings of someone that's been kidnapped and broken through what can only be described as mental torture in a prison cell? I assure you, there was and is a reason for all this. Aiden is not a sadistic murderer and captor solely for his pleasures. He's working for a higher purpose...and Betrayal suddenly becomes a question of ends justifiable to their means. I don't want to spoil anything, but Avery's family works in some very illicit dealings, in which no detail is spared in their description. The reader is slowly exposed to what leads each of the characters to the present situation at hand, and the back half of the novel will keep pages turning as you crave every last detail. So much detail in fact, that you almost forget there's romance to be had!

We've just discussed the very worst of humanity, and now we have to find a way to discuss romance. It's crazy to try and explain it, but the author does an excellent job of executing the possibility of this over the course of the story. If you hadn't figured it by now, there's a veritable cornucopia of tension from the NON-sexual content of the novel, and sexual tension is spliced in at just the right moments, without the cheese factor. Aiden is a monster in many ways, but he's an angel in others. Whether that's just another layer of mental torture or not, Avery slowly melts for it and things eventually get hot and heavy. As a reader, there is an underlying question of consent. Can a literal captive victim truly ever give consent? Aiden needs Avery's heart, but at what cost to her soul? After confronting this issue, the sexual side of things can settle into what you might expect from a traditional piece erotica, maybe even a little too much. At one point Avery learns of Aiden's sexual desires, and we reach a moment when I truly question what's going through the character's mind. Of allllll the things happening in this story either to the main characters or others: murder, rape, mental torture, physical torture, conspiracy, and fraud, Avery seems most taken aback by one thing. Anal sex. It's almost as if Avery is saying, "woah there...capture, mental re-programming, and a complete exposition of my family's unspeakable crimes leading to my personal self hatred are one thing...but nobody said anything about butt stuff!!" To be fair again to Avery, she's mentally broken by everyone's admission...but damn girl, let's focus on some priorities!

Verdict: Betrayal, by Sarah Bailey leaves me feeling a number of emotions. This isn't just simple erotica with a hard edge, as the author is more detailed and talented than that. There is so much I hate to confront about its content. I'm appalled, bewildered, frustrated, and weirdly touched by the character dynamic throughout the course of the entire story. Of all these things that I feel, I simply cannot look away. I've never discussed a book more with my peers, and I've never needed to know what happens next in a series more than with this selection. This in many ways makes the novel a controversial work of art. To put it simply: I'm all-in.

First time reading something from this author and if you don't enjoy dark romance skip this.. this book had me on my toes on what the fuck is going to happen lol i didn't skim anything and was sucked into it.

Lets start with Aiden now i didn't hate him he had a reason as to why he wanted revenge on Avery's family.. he was rough cold and kinda still had some moral code (tiny bit) he wasn't that truly cruel but he did do some mental torture on Avery so she can depend on him.. and well he got that job done.. but he also fell for her the more he spent with her. As for Avery.. i felt bad for her seeing your parents killed then kidnapped and locked and chained in a room can fuck with your mind plus the hot cold emotions you have for your kidnapper.. Avery was strong and vulnerable at times not knowing what to feel.. now them as a couple was hawt they still had problems wanting to tell/know the truth and we are left with a heartbreaking cliffhanger.. i can't wait to read book 2..i wanna see what happens and how the next book starts!!! I'm debating to wait until book 3 so i can binge..

Betrayal is a tragically twisted and heartbreaking tale of control and revenge. It is not for the faint of heart. If you do not enjoy edgy, intense, suspenseful reads then this story is not for you. If you have read and enjoyed Bailey’s After Dark paranormal series, then you have a feel for her writing style and somewhat of an idea of what may lie ahead in this new series. This dark thriller holds intense undertones and is edgy, provocative, and electrifying and it will take you out of your comfort zone. This book is written in dual POV’s of both Avery and Aiden and we get a look into both their thoughts and the gut-wrenching emotional turmoil they both face throughout the story. Bailey did a remarkable job of showcasing the characters and their emotional journey. I was engrossed and holding my breath from the first page and read the book in one sitting. I lost myself in this story and was completely immersed with Aiden and Avery until the end. However, it is not quite the end. This book ends on a devastating cliffhanger but soon we will have the second installment in the series. I cannot wait to see what Bailey has in store for these enthralling characters. I was glued to the pages and I am ready for more.

*Thanks to Sarah Bailey for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this new series. I am under no obligation to review this book; I do so freely and am providing my honest review.

Once again, Sarah Bailey has given me an intoxicating man to obsess over followed by a infuriating cliffhanger! But fortunately for me, this series is complete so I’m diving right into the next book.

Avery is a young heiress who seems to have the perfect life. Close friends, loving parents, and a promising future. But then one night, that all changes. Her perfect everything is ripped away by one dark man, who then takes her captive.

Aiden’s hatred for Avery’s family runs deep. He has suffered by the hands of the Daniels since he was a small boy. He’s finally serving up his revenge, but then there’s one little hiccup that throws it all off, Avery. And the fact she’s a witness to what Aiden has done. He takes her home with him, planning to use her for leverage. Their relationship is rocky in the beginning to say the least. Then Avery starts to get under his skin. But how could Avery possibly form an attraction to the man who has stolen her life from her?

Aiden finally lets Avery in on her family’s dark past and horrifying secrets. She somewhat justifies what Aiden has done and she forms a deep need for him. The same goes for him. The chemistry between these two is off the charts. Two people who should never work given the circumstances, constantly fought their attraction until they just couldn’t anymore. Avery completely submits to Aiden, but he submits to her as well. Aiden loses his control when it comes to her.

Avery is the light the Aiden’s darkness.

Aiden reveals the part of his plans he needs Avery to facilitate and she’s not on board at all. To the point where she leaves him, breaking her promise. And Aiden lets her go. Of course, we, the readers, are not privy to Aiden’s plan at the end of this book!! But hopefully we can get out answers in Sacrifice.

5 Cranky Stars

Betrayal by Sarah Bailey is the first book I have had the pleasure of reading from this author, an boy was I in for a shock. Like, I did not expect to read what I did. It had my heart pumping. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the dark edge this story had, and I’m usually not one for steamy intense twisted romance. Surprisingly this book could make me change my mind.

Avery and Aiden are one spicy, passionate, electrifying couple. I love that the book was from both POV so the reader could really get into their heads and understand both characters for who they are and what they feel. I would love to read more on this couple and hope to in the future. Their attractive and out of this world phenomenal chemistry pulls you in and leaves you wanting more with every page.

I give this book 5 cranky stars! Job well done from a new to me author that I hope to dive into more.

Betrayal is a dual POV, dark thriller centered around Aidan and Avery. I find it interesting how Sarah switches between the two individuals. She does it very well and eloquently. I have read two novels of her After Dark Series, and I have a good feeling for her writing. I have to say that she did it again. I was pulled into the story, and I couldn't put it down. The characters are dynamic, strong, vulnerable, and every other known human emotion.
I LOVE the cover that she picked for the first story in the Corrupt Empire Series.
The pace was perfect, and I never had to question what had happened. I truly like Sarah's writing style; a shining example of a great writer.
I recommend this story to everyone who enjoys reading dark thriller/romance stories because this one doesn't disappoint.

Gutted in the best way...

Absolutely knockout! I decided to read Sarah's dark universe backlist for January and with book 1 officially complete I'm super excited to keep moving forward.

Aiden and Avery are just absolutely amazing together. Their chemistry sizzles off the page. They have every reason to hate one another, and yet they can't stay away from each other. Watching them catch feelings despite all the obstacles it's just so fulfilling to witness. After that emotional cliffhanger I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!

I read Sarah Bailey’s first book from her paranormal romance series last year. Back then she had just become published. Since then I’ve read every book she’s published in that series, I’ve seen her push boundaries, I’ve heard her voice sharpen, deepen and strengthen. But this book...the first of a new series, the first of a new genre, has conquered my poor romance-greedy heart.

Sarah has evolved as a writer. Betrayal is proof of that. Emotion pours from these pages. It’s a waterfall of tears. It’s a containment for Pandora’s box. And we know what Pandora’s box is all about. This book came out of nowhere, in perfect condition, in flawless form with hella pain, drama and desire. I literally can’t begin to describe how powerful this book is.

But I have to. Because it would be a sin not to talk about how brilliant it is.

Aiden is a force of nature. A hardass, no-nonsense killer, seeking revenge. He really hadn’t expected to run into Avery, who is the complete opposite of him, she’s sweet and innocent. But that changes when he takes her. The idea of falling for the man who killed your parents sounds crazy, right? But when that guy is Aiden, who the hell cares if it sounds crazy? I’ll explain why. Aiden is the real MVP. The guy oozes sex. He thinks and talks in fucks, can be cold but there's a reason for it. He can be a right prick at times but he does have a caring, considerate heart. It comes out a lot when he’s with Avery and I live for the sweet moments that make me swoon.

Can we talk about the sexual chemistry? The sexual tension? The sex? Listen...shit got real. Things go from 0 to 100 real quick in this book, on several occasions, and that’s not me complaining! The feelings are maaaad, "should I, shouldn't I?" "Will it, won't it?" moments. The attraction is so believable, the internal conflicts are raw. I’ve read a lot of dark romance before, so I know what to expect, and Betrayal is a true trophy. A massive achievement for Sarah who dived into this genre with confidence.

Sarah Bailey has been one of my favourite authors because her romance books are always fantastically written, her characters are fresh, and she has a skill for making her readers hurt. A lot. Like hugely. Maybe I’m a glutton for heartache, I don’t know, but I can always trust her to mend my broken heart with a HEA. All I can say is, I’m relieved there are two more books in the series. I was about ready to throw my phone across the room when it ended as it did. (Again, just a other example of why I love this author...I don’t have many who make me want to throttle their characters or cry my heart out).

I realise that I’ve gone on more about the author than the actually book itself but I think it’s important to give respect and acknowledgement where it’s due. Sarah Bailey...thank you for starting this epic journey. I’m so far gone with Aiden and Avery already. I know book 2 and 3 will probably destroy me, I also know the Benson Bros will completely haunt me in the future but I can take the tribulation. K-drama has prepared me for this level of feel-fuckery. I’m crazy excited (and scared) to jump into Sacrifice. You are a romance writing legend.

Thrilling

Avery becomes an orphan as she gets ready for dinner with her parents. Then she is kidnapped.
The start of a series, with an unhappy for now ending.
Sarah Bailey takes the unimaginable and makes it believable.
Her sex scenes are incredibly hot, her characters endearing even when they are questionable, her plots as detailed and enthralling as you could wish.
Highly recommended.

Lovers of Steam--buckle up because you're in for a ride! Betrayal is the start of a new three book series by Sarah Bailey and from what I understand it's her first foray into writing a "dark romance". What I mean by that is that you won't find any love letters and flower bouquets here--and that was just fine for me! I love a good dark romance, where the characters are messy and flawed, and this was it! Avery is the daughter of a mogul who built his empire by nefarious means, of which she is unaware. Aiden is determined to make him pay and Avery gets caught in his web of vengeance. The two of them are determined to hate each other but, as in all great romances, their attraction and desire can't be denied. As the layers of the characters are pulled back more and more, you can't help but hear their voices in your head and understand where their motivations come from. Eventually, you root for their happy ending, but their inner demons intensify the struggle. A great read and I will definitely be awaiting the next books in the series!

Hum. A generous 3/5.

General notes for now, I’m still trying to wrap my head around this one. Yes there will be spoilers.

The characters were a bit…eh. There was no development that made them worthwhile, and I felt there wasn’t actually chemistry between our two mains which is a shame because that’s the whole point of romance books.

There was not a lot of backstory. There was some, but sometimes I felt it did nothing to help the main story along.

Head all the warnings.

I don’t think her Stockholm syndrome was handled well at all. I mean, her going crazy in a cell was great, but Aiden is meant to be the big bad and I feel like he crumbled as soon as he saw her freak in the cell? Like “doe eyes”? You were in the military, you’ve killed people, and a pair of wide eyes break you?
Also who has a cell randomly in their apartments? Like did you convert the spare room? Themed air bnb guest room?

I feel like the end was also a bit blah and rushed - there was a constant lead up to this big bad thing happening but nothing big actually happened in my opinion? “Oh I’ve been lying to you so let’s 🎺 one last time before I bring myself to tell you more”

I’m about to start book 2, so maybe there’s more in there that’ll make book 1 better but if there is then I think it should have just been made into one book and edited for continuity.

Lies, Deceit and Betrayal. Nothing is what it seems.

This is the first book in this series so be ready for the cliffhanger. This is a dark, twisted tale of lies, deceit and betrayal. Avery is the heir to her family's company and fortune, even if she doesn't really have a lot of interest in it. Avery isn't some spoiled princess even if her parents dote on her, she likes simple things in life and truly loves to draw. But her family has secrets and there are things she doesn't know about what her family does behind the scenes of their company. Aiden is out to expose Avery's family for who they truly are, but she gets caught up in the middle and things start to run off course. Grab this wonderful book and delve into this world of privilege that is built on a web of lies that when unraveled could be Avery's and Aiden's downfall. Looking forward to book two, Sacrifice.

This is a very dark book that promises to be the first of a very dark series. Once I started reading, I was immediately pulled in to the story and needed to continue to read to learn more about the story but also the characters and what they were going to do next. It’s told from the 2 main characters point of view, so it helps in relating to what they are thinking as they are doing or saying. There is, as with all dark romances, a number of triggers in this story. It’s very well written and the characters are well developed. As it is book 1 there is a BIG, and I mean VERY BIG cliffhanger! Looking forward to the next book.

Betrayal was the first dark romance novel I have read; my mind is blown.
Aiden and Avery had my emotions in a constant state of confusion. Between them, there was love and hate, desire and disgust, respect and dominance. This truly is dark and twisted, sexy romance. And I had to keep reading.

Ms. Bailey had me hooked from page one, needing to know what would happen next. Three days later, heart racing as I finished the book and damn it, I need Sacrifice NOW! I need more Aiden and Avery, NOW!!

A dark, twisted and hot read.
This is a dark and heartbreaking story and it will hit buttons you may not think you have. Avery and Aiden both give their point of views and that makes for a very interesting read. This one took me a bit longer to read because of how intense it was. This was a page turner and then damn if there is not a cliffhanger. Great job Ms. Bailey!! If you like the dark with just that bit of sizzle this is the book for you. I am so looking forward to reading the next book. This very dark romance was heartbreaking, cruel, compelling and sometimes painful.
Aiden’s life was filled with painful memories, abuse, and tragedy, all stemming from Avery’s evil family.
Well written, full of graphic sensual scenes as Aiden was captor, punisher, and lover to innocent Avery.
The dreaded cliffhanger was HUGE, and while I hate cliffys, I have to admit that this was well done. I’ll have to read the continuation to determine whether this was worth waiting for. So far, it looks good.

Aiden is set to take revenge on Avery's family her father is a wealthy man but his wealth comes at a cost for others, ill gotten you could say. Avery is naive to this and stands up for her family. But she sees to much and Aiden takes her and breaks her giving into him submitting to his dark side he showed her their evil and now she is seeing things differently. This book is written in dual POV so you can take the journey with the couple together and separately. This book may have emotional triggers for some. It end on a cliffhanger though

Wow and holy cow. This author knows how to grab your attention from the start of the book to the end and leave you gasping for more. I was captivated and gobsmacked. The glimpses into the past and the flashes of rememberance make you question what you think is happening. Your heart breaks for Aiden and Avery while at the same time hoping things work out for them. I hope the next book has more of her friend James because that is a character that is dying to tell a story.

Surprisingly fresh,intense and steamy!

Surprisingly fresh and steamy dark captive romance set in the world of human trafficking...and worse. The complexity of the H and h relationship and the unparalleled chemical attraction is compelling , explosive and both raw and romantic. The underlying details of the tale are gritty, disturbing and darkly enigmatic. The gutwrenching cliffhanger ending leaves the reader wanting and so grateful the answers are but a one click away. I have found a new author to follow and promote to my book buds!
