With this book a lot changes in Jen's life. She is brought before council, shown as what working with Hedge Mages could do, a shining example. Works with an odd ally to go after a friend, discovers she can more than hold her own against some crazy things and outs herself to an important person in her life. It's the last part that is telling because in telling her story she owns up to things. It will be interesting where her life leads her from here.

3 1/2 stars. Another enjoyable read in this series. Jen stays firmly rooted in both worlds: as an ER doctor and her magic, including its politics, during the beginning of the book. Although the action doesn't really get going until a little over half way through, it does tackle Kate's trip to the other side of the Veil. Finally! That has been the white elephant sitting in the room for much of this series. However, some readers might be disappointed about the length of Kate's screen time. It's more about the journey than the destination in this case.
Jen has been on quite a journey both through magic and her career as a doctor. She is finally more settled in her career and in a rewarding relationship. But the magic side is keeping things interesting. There are dangerous mages out there who are bound to come and attack her again. And what exactly is her relationship with a Vampire Elder that says she is his familiar?
More of the realms and creatures from the other side of the Veil are explored when she and others go on a rescue mission. That adds further layers to the world-building in these series which I greatly appreciate. It also adds needed action to the story because it was begging to flounder a little. Jen and company face danger, a few surprises are discovered on the way and Jen is a hero once more.
The writing is well done and the flow of the story is smooth. The writer's experience as a doctor is clearly seen in the book, not just through medical techniques and realistic scenarios but the administrative and legal procedures that are extra layers of difficulties as a physician struggle to care for a patient. I love some of the small details in the magical world like Darvish having a hard time adjusting to the way time moves in this world vs. across the Veil. I wish that the writer had addressed Jen being a full vampire familiar more. What exactly does the vampire get out of it? Why didn't he try to convince her to take this step earlier when she was in danger? Well, hopefully those questions will be answered next book.

This was the best book in this series by far. Absolutely loved the story line and how it entangled other books, from this author.
Would highly recommend this book. But would read the others in the series first.

Stupendous - on par with the “Medicine and Magic” series.
