POSSESSION: The Exorcist's Apprentice 2, is the second book in Mark Lukens' " Exorcist's Apprentice" series. We begin with a new couple, Roger and Trish, who are expecting their first child in a few months. When Roger's big brother Seth arrives, Trish is always exasperated at the intrusion, but this time things are quite a bit . . . worse.

"Everything about this is strange."

We alternate from Trish's point of view, to Paul and his son (in training), Danny. The thing that bothers me the most, is that these sets of characters don't get together until approximately 60% into the novel.

It felt to me as if the majority of the first half was mainly focused on Trish noticing the "uncanny" way Seth is behaving (which his brother doesn't seem to sense at all), and the nightmares she has about him.

". . . She wasn't crazy (of course, truly crazy people never thought they were crazy) . . . "

I felt that Seth's character was the most interesting by far, and yet he really didn't physically "do" much aside from a couple scenes in the very beginning.

". . . I went looking for something and I found it."

The demonic possession and backstory to this novel were the high points, in my opinion. Yet, there was one character I felt I should have remembered from the first book in this series, but couldn't recall. I really don't see this as a fault of the author so much as it simply fell into the trap of many "second books" in a trilogy. Technically, this is continuing on with the main plot that began in Book one, yet it needs to be able to stand on its own as well as move the central plot forward to the next book. In my personal opinion, many of these second books are much less fulfilling and feel like more of a "place holder" to tide readers over until the grand finale--the third book expected to tie everything together in the end.

"We all wish we would have done things earlier . . . Done things differently."

Overall, I still enjoyed the established characters from Book one, but wish they had made a stronger impact earlier in the story. Also, given the fact that many/most readers will have read other books in between the publishing dates of these, I think it could have benefitted by a bit more recounting of some of the important people/situations from Book one that are brought back--or even referenced--in this second book. While there was a conclusion to the problem focused on here, because of the "set up" and foreshadowing of a third book, I somehow felt as if it was left . . . unfinished . . . .

Of course, those that read this shortly after the first Exorcist's Assistant, will probably be less likely to encounter the issues I had. I'm going with a three star-rating because I really enjoyed having the idea that began in Book one expanded upon. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that this book had quite the same impact as the first. However, I attribute much of that to the year apart in my reading each.

Another day battling Satan

This again was just an okay story. The ending creeped me out though and it sounds like another book is coming. I like the Father and son duo but theres so many secrets between them. I also feel that This book could have gone deeper into their personalities and their relationship. this story was about a man possessed by a demon and visiting his sister-in-law and brother in North Carolina. Paul and his son eventually were pulled into their home. They both made many mistakes and omissions in this and I was just kind of disappointed that they let other things distract them from the exorcism. It was good and I will continue to read but for Paul being such an incredible exerciser he neglects certain things and then they learn to really bad things. Like Father Norman. He should have gone after him but he blew it off. I will read the next book of it happens for sure. I just hope it's a tad bit better.

A decent sequel but not still in shadow of the first

I really enjoyed the first book in the series , especially the twist! This second novel felt a bit rushed and repetitive as the author tried to catch the reader up with events and characters from the first novel.

Some things I missed in this novel that I would've enjoyed were:
1)Perhaps a longer timeline between this and the first novel in which we learn that Danny has been working to hone his powers so that his control of Azazel doesn't seem so forced considering he's a novice.

2)A more thoughtful and engaging examination and cultivation of Danny and Paul's relationship.

Overall, I would certainly recommend the book and I do look forward to the third one in the series.

Roger and Trish, are a happily married couple, who are expecting there first child. Roger breaks the news to Trish, that his brother Seth is coming to stay for a few days. Seth is always asking Roger for money. On the first night of his stay, Trish see a blue light coming from the family room. She goes down to investigate what is going on. She see Seth, kneeling in front of this carved statue, that has many faces of horror and tortured expressions. Seth was saying things in a language, that she could not understand. Trish thought that she saw some of the facing moving. Trish tries to explain to Roger,
that strange things have been happening since Seth arrival. Roger thinks that Trish is exaggerating a little, and says that he will talk to his brother. Seth had just come from New York, where an antique dealer was murdered. It turns out that a carved wooden statue, was stolen from the dealers shop. Trish thinks, that Seth could be possessed. She seek help from her local church but the pastor can't help them. He tells her to call Father McFadden. Father McFadden assign Paul and Danny to this case in North Carolina. Are Paul and Danny, strong enough to drive the evil spirit that possess Seth? I enjoyed book 1 in this series very much. Book 2, was just okay.

Another great book from Lukens!

I love this series, the writing is done in a way that is very natural. It has a real life flow to it that makes you feel like you are right there, part of the storyline watching the story unfold before your eyes. To me I find this is a rare quality that you find in amazing authors, Mark Lukens is becoming one of those authors!

Really good

Once again Mr Lukens scares me half to death. This book was so scary that if I read it before bed, I have to read a romance or crime book before I try to sleep. I think I've got all his books on my Kindle now and I am looking forward to my choice. I hope you will his books too. Happy Reading!

A cat and mouse thriller between an exorcist and a demon. As good a mystery as a horror story with an open ending.
