Tim Walkers photography says so much on it’s own and is just mesmerising to consume without the need for explanations but I just love the little glimpses of his process he reveals in his books.
His creativity as a photographer is unmatched today and when his ideas are melded with some of the fashion industries most respected and adept creatives the images that are made are just astonishing. This is celebrated in this book to accompany Tim Walker’s V&A exhibition ‘Wonderful Things’ where interviews with Walker’s collaborators and himself provide a much broader perspective into how his images come to be. Being able to explore the inspiration behind his pictures makes you appreciate the talent and creativity involved even more than just experiencing the image. It’s refreshing to hear from other people who are apart of the creation of an image as it’s often the photographer that gets sole recognition. It’s testament to Walker’s inclusivity and celebration of diversity whether that’s race, gender, beauty and all variations in society and his subsequent desire to let those people feel heard and respected through his images.
Experiencing Tim Walker’s work in a tangible format is the only way to do it justice, away from the overload of images we scroll past in the blink of an eye on the internet, and what better way to do so than in this fantastic book of some of his best work to date.
An interesting look into the work of Tim Walker and how his imaginative shoots draw on many different realities, within this book he has dedicated each shoot to reflect an object in the V&A which not only pushes the parameters of what it means to be a fashion photographer but also how the right person can highlight the minor details of objects that may be otherwise overlooked, giving them an additional layer of meaning.
A beautiful if slight insight into my favorite fashion photographer's creative process, featuring conversations with frequent collaborators including Tilda Swinton and Gwendoline Christie. Absolutely loved the photos for the "Pen and Ink" and "Box of Delights" stories, plus it's not everyday you see a fashion spread based on the Bayeux Tapestry.
A beautiful companion to his outstanding current exhibition at the V&A in London, and a love letter to conservationists, curators and archeologists; each project heartily inspired by actual historical artefacts on display in the museum. Absolutely stunning.
