Eureka: One Bloody Sunday

Rate this book
Why did British Army Red Coats fire on a group of miners hidden behind a crude wooden stockade in Eureka in 1854? Why did soldiers from two famous British regiments attack a group of gold miners? The central character, Bernie, lived with his parents on the goldfields and played a key role in events leading up to the battle at the Eureka Stockade, despite his age. He sees the murder of the miner that sparked armed protest. We see the growing unrest and the fighting through his eyes. People on both sides of the conflict believed that their actions were correct and justifiable. Readers will see actual letters from the governor, complaints from angry miners, as well as diaries and newspaper articles.

Hugh Dolan is a Squadron Leader in the Australian Air Force, a life that he enjoys and recommends to others. He is currently researching the air battles over Gallipoli at the Australian Defence Force Academy. He has worked in minor headquarters roles in Australia and overseas. He describes his military service to be within range of map tables and the coffee percolator. His military career started 15 years ago with enlistment in the British Army as a private. He served in Bosnia as a junior NCO and witnessed the importance of military intelligence in operation planning. He confesses that he initially joined the army after barely graduating with a masters degree in history from Oxford University to pay overdue bills and to see how history is written.

Good to read a history graphic novel. Some parts confusing, so many characters and more engagement and empathy could have been created by building up some characters stories. The aim was to show different point of views and it achieved that.

2025 pop sugar reading challenge- a book rated less than 3 stars on Goodreads.
