Joy Ellis grew up in Kent but moved to London when she won an apprenticeship with the prestigious Mayfair florist, Constance Spry Ltd. Having run her own flower shop in Weybridge for many years, Ellis then worked as a bookseller until a trip to the Greek island of Skyros, where she took part in a writer's workshop with Sue Townsend, encouraged her to write her own books. Joy soon after moved to the Lincolnshire Fens, where she has spent many of years living among the countryside accompanied by her partner, Jacqueline, and her variety of springer spaniels. After many years of writing, Jasper Joffe, from Joffe Books, discovered Joy's work and approached her with the offer of becoming her new publisher. This new relationship introduced Joy's work to the fascinating world of ebooks and audible listening. Since their partnership, Joy's success has grown further than she could have ever imagined. She has recently celebrated her 10th UK No.1 book on the Amazon 'Best Sellers' chart, with her 9th instalment in the Jackman & Evans series, Solace House. Joy boasts a staggering estimated total over 3.4 million copies sold worldwide, and became a short-listed nominee at the British Book Awards, 2021.
CRIME ON THE FENS I began reading this series with Buried on the Fens so I can confirm it work well as stand alone. It has always been in my plans to go back to the beginning and I am thrilled that I have finally found a gap in my reading commitments to do this.
Nikki Galena is star of the show. A feisty woman who has a lot of pain in her life which has caused her to hate drugs with a passion. At the beginning she is very much a one woman band and has had several partners running for the hills. She is forced to work with Joseph Easter a man who is good where she is bad. Is it a match made in heaven or hell? I couldn't wait to find out.
2 young women disappear one is a dedicated student and the other the daughter of a criminal. Not just any criminal though, one that is 'friends' with Nikki Galena. The Police are working with the underworld to find these women in a story that has humour, tears and lots of edge-of-your-seat thrills and spills.
This is an excellent book in which we watch characters grow and develop as the team works together to untangle the web of lies.
I expect nothing less from Joy Ellis than a story that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions which keeps the pages turning all the way to the end. Brilliant read! -------------------------------------------------------------- SHADOW OVER THE FENS This is book 2 of the Nikki Galena series.
Nikki is finally coming to terms with the trauma of what happened to Hannah and is in the process of moving back to Cloud Fen when her neighbour commits suicide in front of a group of children. What could have caused him to act in a way that was so uncharacteristic of him? This is a question that Nikki must find the answer to.
Joseph is recovering from his injuries and has just returned to work when a nemesis from his past appears. Men who look like this man turn up dead and suspicion is pointed at Joseph.
What is going on and are there any links between the 2 cases. As Nikki tries to find clues to the motive for the murders she finds herself up against secrets from many years ago.
This is a very intriguing and complex story that keeps the reader engrossed in the story through a roller coaster ride of twist and turns all the way to the shocking conclusion.
We learn a lot more about the characters in this book as the story unfolds. I love the characters that make up Nikki's team they are complex and realistic.
I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
An excellent read and well worth the 5 stars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- HUNTED ON THE FENS This is book 3 in the 'Fens' series by Joy Ellis. The suspense starts at the beginning and continues right to the end.
Joseph is on high alert when he smells smoke and springs into action in time to warn Nikki her garage is on fire. That is only the beginning of a chain of events that has the whole of her team watching each other's backs.
Nikki is still reeling from the death of her daughter and now she feels responsible for a young officer losing his life and another badly injured. Someone is after revenge but who and why is the question everyone is asking.
In addition they are trying to solve a murder where a woman is found dead in a locked room with state of the art security. The assassin is killed in a road accident leaving no clues and certainly no answers just more questions.
We learn more about the characters and their pasts in this book as well as following a complex case with multiple events that create an adrenaline pumping read that had me turning page after page.
Another gripping addition to a brilliant series with a totally unexpected ending - 5 golden stars from me
WOW three book's in one package. Detective Nikki Galena The Fens series. I didn't have a favourite one I enjoyed them all. Cliffhangers in the making, all completely different stories to enjoy this author draws you into her books every time and these I would read again.
The first three books in the Nicki Galena series. I had already read one of them but it was so good to be able to read the other two. As with all Joy Ellis books, they are without doubt the best police procedural novels that you can read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the way the best team of detectives ever was formed. In parts, there were heartbreaking moments, learning about Nicki's daughter, moments where I was amazed at what Nicki had done in her career and moments where I was waving my Cupid's bow to get the two together. And they were on top of the absolutely riveting stories which I can never foretell how they are going to end. If you have never read a Joy Ellis book, then start with these three and, if you have read a couple of Joy Ellis books, this is a great way to extend your library. Whatever your circumstances, don't miss out on this collection.
Book #1 I enjoyed. DI Nikki Galena and DS Joe Easter were both interesting characters and I enjoyed the developing relationship between them. The plot was sufficiently engaging to keep me reading to the end.
Book #2 disappointed me. DS Joe Easter didn't ring true for me, neither his reaction to events nor his feelings regarding his relationship to DI Nikki Galena. It almost made me stop reading it, something I rarely do once I've started a book. However, none of the other reviews that I've read felt the same way. If I'd bought the books separately, I probably wouldn't have bought book #3.
Book #3 was okay, but the initial reference to Nikki's daughter I felt was too cold and dismissive, although this was redressed later in the book.
Would not call this collection 'gripping crime thrillers' more a gentle murder mystery. The characters are likeable and the storylines not too far-fetched. What I do like is the continuity as the series probresses, the author remains true to the story. I also like the added extras, ie the background info of the main characters and the glossary of slang words. I would recommend for a holiday read.
Nikki is truely one smart police officer with help from Sarge Joe.
To follow many twists and turns in this reading was really fun,, just didn't want to put the book down untill the last page.. New technology is good but sometimes good old fashioned foot work works faster and better in some cases..
Very compulsive reading characters are great and i love Rory his wit is great ! Great who done it thriller not knowing until the end on to book four now !! Still not sure how the person found out about Joseph's daughters travel plans won't mention any names !!
Absolutely amazing this had me gripped totally on the edge of my seat and I just couldn’t put it down. Read all 3 within a week..... now off to start number 4
I love the list of local words at the end. I love the team and their different characters and the relationships between them. Not at all predictable which I love, as I nearly usually always guess the plot and the whodunnit.
I have just complete the first three books in this series. Didn't think I would read them all together but the story was a page turner. Loved all the characters. Would definitely recommend this author and I will read more of Joy Ellis work. Thank you.
Thoroughly recommended kept me engrossed for many hours great story line and great character building all three books thoroughly enjoyed and looking toward the next
Just finished my very 1st Joy Ellis book last night (Crime On The Fens). It was fantastic. Loved it! She is now on my list of 'must read every book he / she has written'...and will be snuggling up with Book 2 when I got to bed tonight.
I am looking forward to reading vol. 4. The characters are well drawn. They are not painted as perfect people. They are flawed, as are we all. Plots are interesting and complicated. If you enjoy this type of book, these should please you.
Addictive. Constent twists and turns to keep you onto your toes and interested. Written great. Details in depth and descriptive helps you picture scenes and Characters.
Book 1 Nikki, one feisty, driven detective, in a one woman crusade against drug dealers. What has made her this hard, a regular stack of complaints on the desk of her boss. She works alone, till told she has someone for a month, Joseph, wanting to immediately dislike him. How this man changed Nikki with his approach to people was interesting. The plot of the war of masks, and the letting a few know about Hannah. A powerful story of the chaos some young people can bring into the Fens, the tenderness of showing one cares, was very well done. A powerful series with Nikki as the head of her team. They have bonded together and giving 100 percent to each case. The cases are each difgferent, the plots flow as you delve into the story and the characters that are touched by each case. A great selection that will bring hours and more hours of enjoyable reading.
