When studious Nariyuki tutors two supergeniuses who are total dunces in their favorite subjects, he’ll get a crash course in love!
Nariyuki Yuiga comes from an impoverished family, so he’s eager to secure a full scholarship to college before he graduates high school. His principal agrees, with one stipulation—he must tutor the two smartest girls at school and make sure they get into their target colleges!
Kominami and Yuiga are going house to house as part of a maid housekeeping service, but they keep running into people they know! Who will be the most embarrassed to have Yuiga in her home? Plus, one of the girls gets a makeover right before a study session and sits reeeal close to Yuiga, but he doesn’t recognize her! Will he catch a clue?
This one was pretty funny, with a good mix of all the girls. This volume focused on Nariyuki's relationship with each, rather than all the girls being friends, but I like how they don't really compete with each other. Asumi is rather fun with her boldness, but I do like how each girl clearly trusts Nariyuki and he doesn't take advantage of that.
Volume notes: Mostly episodic chapters where each character get their chance to shine. The Fumino-centric chapter is a standout for me. 4 stars.
Series review: "We Never Learn" or #BokuBen is a comedy manga that draws its laughs from the interactions of the main character Yuiga with his harem, I mean, his classmates Fumino, Ogata, and Uruka. He tutors them, with a college scholarship on the line for him. There are also two other supporting characters in the periphery, teacher Kirasu, and recent alum Asumi, whose orbits sometimes cross into the paths of the main cast. It has the usual pervy tropes found in manga of its ilk, although toned down because of the high school setting. It was a manga I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did. It gave me that "finale high" which I associate with stories that get me as a reader.
One reason I probably enjoyed this series is the earnestness of the main character. One can't help but cheer for him. He's a good guy and hopelessly clueless sometimes, which is main component of his charm.
*me beginning this volume* For fuck's sake, please be good! I don't want to drop this series, so for the love of all that is holy and good, please be good!
*me finishing this volume* FUCK YEAH, BITCHES!! *marching band lays in the background as confetti rains from the sky*
Everyone, NO WORDS can express how happy I am that this volume was INFINITELY BETTER than the last one. I know most people don't think this series is anything special, but I have truly enjoyed every installment and want nothing more than to see this series to the end. Last volume shook me to my core with how much I disliked it, but THANK FUCKING GOODNESS this volume more than made up for it.
What made this volume shine (and this series' greatest strength) was the expressions. HOLY FUCK, the expressions made in this volume were FUCKING GOLD. The expressions on Yuiga and Uruka's faces when they catch their friends kissing was the absolute best and I'm thrilled those expressions stayed throughout the volume.
The characters were on point and while the girls are still love struck for Yuiga, it was definitely handled better and there were a handful of genuinely funny gags. With regards to my long-standing disdain for Mafuyu sensei, I have decided to let my feelings go and move on. I'm tired of harping on my same old gripes (like the FUCKING OBNOXIOUS AMOUNT OF ASS SHOTS) and have realized that it's not going to stop, so I should be a mature adult and move on. Also, she wasn't this bad this volume and I kind of liked her chapter when she loses her house key. That was awesome.
As much as I'd love to keep gushing, I feel like I'd be here all day and I don't want to waste your time nor spoil too much. Suffice to say, this was a great volume that made my day and reminded me why I love this series so much. I definitely can't wait for volume 8!
Sensei has more cute girls than he knows what to do with, for sure, & more than any man deserves, certainly! I know how he feels - an old song lyric goes, "Did you ever have to make up your mind? Did you ever have to pick one, & leave the (others) behind?" I know from experience that having more than 1 girl seriously interested in me leads to serious problems - carpet fights, envy, over-doting, jealousy, claws unleashed, clingyness, frustration, hurt feelings, worry, self doubt, and the possibility of hurting someone you care about, & even possibly losing having them be a part of your life. No matter which girl I chose, it was always the wrong choice. This is because in choosing, that meant the girls not chosen were devastated emotionally, as well as feelings of humiliation & shame. Having to choose 1 girl over another is never a pleasant position to be in. Feelings get hurt & friendships ended, no matter the choice. As W.O.P.P.E.R. said in "War Games", "Strange game. The only way to win is to NOT play." Take these words to heart, my friends, & you too, mr. Tutor! Art, very good. Dialogue, excellent. Characters, believable, loveable, & relatable.
There's a good mix of characters in this volume, seems like each girl got a chapter. I liked the one with Takemoto, that page of warming up before she ran away was one of my favourite moments in the series. Some great physical work there.
Again, the random shenanigans continue, providing hilarious moments of fun and warm fluffy shipping feels....that point in time when I relate to the bus driver (p. 46) more than the characters...
But, this volumes, we track down a blogger, get a makeover, clean everything, and speak to foreigners.
