It's been a long time since I've read this series and honestly, I wasn't sure if I was going to remember anything.
I'm normally super annoyed with time travel plots, but the fact that you get to see Shiro's past in this makes me super super happy. Shiro is an asshole, but it's so fitting, I was laughing the entire time.
¡Necesito respuestas!
I feel like this series is super uneven at this point, but I actually really enjoyed this volume, looking into Rin and Yukio's mother's and Father Fujimoto's pasts. Not really a whole lot else happens, but it was interesting seeing a new side to Fujimoto and learning a little about who their mom was. We'll see what the next volume brings though...
Rin and Mephisto take a trip into the past so Rin can finally learn the circumstances that led to his and Yukio's birth. I really like Yuri she is such a vibrant character and I'm saddened to see how much Shiro suffered in his early life and how angry he was. It is also interesting to see how Yuri and Satan met even though I know the end of their story is tragic it is nice to see that their relationship wasn't born on violence.
While I’m happy to get some context/backstory, it ended up being one of those info-dump volumes where the entire thing follows a small number of characters as they go on a specific mission that isn’t even over when the volume ends. The author even has as a note at the end that even going fast it will be a long arc. Less filler in previous volumes to spread this out a bit more would be nice. I know it’s fantasy, demons, etc. but some of the plot devices used so characters can learn information is really cringy.
I honestly don’t have words. What a wonderful, enthralling, STRESSFUL volume. Thank god I’ve just subscribed to Shonen Jump so I can read ahead and find out what happens to my favorite exorcists before 2020.
Things are not looking good for humanity as demons are on the loose and visible! People are encouraged to stay home. In case of trouble, they should contact their local police, or the knights of the True Cross. Shiemi finally awakens, and Kamiki fills her in on what is happening. When she asks about Rin, Kamiki thinks Sir Pheles has him in custody. But their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of members of the Grigori, who have come to take Shiemi with them! What is going on here?
Mephisto tells Rin he must handle the current situation so Rin has to journey to the past alone, with the aid of a key he gives him, a master key known as the kamikakushi key. He gives Rin a special patrol uniform and sends him on his way, telling him that if he wants to move forward, he has to accept reality for what it is and accept his past. Meanwhile, Yukio is taken to a meeting with Lucifer where he is introduced to Lucifer’s younger brother, Egyn, King of Water, and Amaimon questions Mephisto about things he should have noticed before.
Rin travels to the past and meets up with Mephisto, who looks just the same as in the future, and sees the young man who will one day be Father Fujimoto. And he sees his mother, Yuri, as well. He follows their story as they move from living on the streets to being accepted into the Cram School, and their journey to becoming exorcists. Rin learns about Section 13 and the cloning program to find a suitable vessel for Lucifer, but there’s still a lot to learn about their pasts.
Things are not looking good for humanity. Can the Knights and the Grigori handle this influx of demons? Will Lucifer take control of Assiah too? I suspect Mephisto has something up his proverbial sleeve, and he is putting wheels into motion through his machinations. Although I sometimes wonder whose side he is on, I do believe he has Assiah’s interests at heart, even if he is a demon. He’s the perfect example of appearances can be deceiving!
Rin’s trip through time is not only very interesting but rather enlightening, as well. Before he became a priest, Shiro was not particularly nice, and a far cry from what he later became. We know he’s going to change into the more kindly but still outspoken and somewhat rough priest, but watching the transformation is fascinating. We also know the journey ends for Yuri after she gives birth to Yukio and Rin, but it’s nice to see what she was like before that, before her involvement with Satan, and what led to it. My biggest questions after reading this volume are: why the heck does Yuri remind me so much of Shiemi? And where did they take Shiemi, and why? She almost confessed to Kamiki about who she likes, until interrupted by the Grigori. Is it Rin? Is it Yukio? Or is it a player we’re unaware of yet? I like seeing the friendship between Shiemi and Kamiki deep and solidify. They both need friends, especially Kamiki.
We didn’t see much of Yukio this time, and I’m still stumped as to what’s going on with him and his motives for being where he is. Is he coming to grips with the fact that he’s also part demon or does he have another agenda? I find it hard to believe he never suspected, since he and Rin are twins and have the same parents, that he had demonic power of some sort. Guess we’ll have have to wait and see.
Another solid volume of Blue Exorcist, can’t wait to read more!
Now we know where Rin and Yukio's names came from oof 💔 I really liked Rin travelling to the past to finally learn about his and his mother's past! It's been a long time coming, and it's awesome having new information about her and Fujimoto... makes me want to go back to the beginning knowing what I know now. A lot of changes are happening with our cast of characters, with the volume itself saying that the time before was the calm before the storm, and I can't wait to see what is in store for everyone.
I've seen some people get upset that Mephisto didn't tell Yukio too, and even Rin asked him why he refused to tell Yukio about the past since he's the one who actually wanted to know, but honestly... Mephisto's a demon, and as the king of time you can get hints from his words that telling him won't change much or would make things worse. Also Rin asked nicely lol I truly think that's a factor.
I have complicated feelings about the parallels between Yuri and Fujimoto, and Rin and Yukio. In some ways it's sweet to find elements of their parents (Fujimoto is their dad ok!! idc!!) in them, and some conversations are really also call outs to them lol (Yuri telling Fujimoto that acting like a dick to others he views as beneath him isn't being strong, it's just proving he's weak and insecure.... cough Yukio). But I also don't jive with the idea of Yukio and Fujimoto being super similar, because I can understand Fujimoto's personality because a lot of it is damage from his terrible early life, but what about Yukio? What's his excuse, when he was raised protected and loved? Be for real.
Also once again we have a minor confessing to Fujimoto, save this man. He wants none of this stop making it weird, author.... bleh.
This volume is mostly and essentially begins to reveal the past and story of Shiro and Yuri as Rin travels back in time to the past to confront the past he has been running away from.
And wow. Shiro was a huge asshole in general and especially an asshole to Yuri. I have no idea how this poor woman could possibly fall in love with him. Hot take and rare opinion - but I don't really like Shiro. I've been teetering on the edge of indifference and dislike and idk, I'm leaning more towards dislike at this point. Shiro was a kind father who did genuinely care about Rin and Yukio. He took them in and raised them, but wow did he fck up Yukio. I won't really be able to even analyze this and really us beyond the scope of this review. Lol
But anyways, I did really enjoying learning a lot about Yuri. Poor girl has grown up on the streets as an orphan. Yet, she is so kind and happy despite it all. Which is why she yells at Shiro that he is weak for being such an uncaring asshole and she is right and should say it.
Seeing as Yuri had an aptitude to see demons, the True Cross which back then was called Asylum, picked her up to train her to become an exorcist. And let me tell you, imo, this whole set up is fcked up. These kids with no where to go are pretty much forced to become exorcists in a military like school. Still, this is Yuri and she has always liked studying demons so is happy. Furthermore, looks like she becomes a 2nd class exorcist like Shiro and is a tamer, which makes sense because she likes demons and wants to become friends with them. She sees it as horrible when Shiro kills low level demons who were doing nothing at all and she is right.
Anyways, throughout the years, Yuri has been playing with and interacting with this small blue flame - aka Satan! With no ego yet, Satan doesn't seem to be aware he is playing, but he did defend Yuri when Shiro tried to punch her for calling him weak. And the volume ends with Satan finally inhabiting a body.
So, I very much look forward to seeing Yuri and Satan's interactions in the manga.
So, far Yuri has been so sweet and kind. I love her and can't wait to see more of her. Just knowing she diea, who knows how, who knows what her pregnancy will land her in, it's just :'(

As I said with Noragami Stray God #22, I stopped reading both series for over a year and I'm not even sure why. I had both volumes but just set them aside. Yeah I was a little annoyed with Yukio in #21 but now I'm kicking myself for waiting.
Rin, now changed after the events of vol. 21 follows Mephisto into the past to observe his history even though he's warned this tale only ends in tragedy. What we get is the history of Father Fujimoto and Yuri Egin, Rin and Yukio's mother.
And it is full on Shiro and Yuri's story. Mephisto and Rin are in the sidelines. And it doesn't just end in tragedy, the whole damn thing is tragic. Neither Shiro and Yuri's childhood is a happy one and what the exorcists were then is much darker too. (I don't want to spoil it, just go see for yourself. This volume is very much worth it).
As a side note Yuri reminds me of Shiemi (and there seems to be something weird going on with her too that's hinted at in the opening pages) and Shiro is an absolute jerk. He's cruel. He may have reasons. That boy isn't well.
Yukio uciekł do iluminati, a miecz Rina pękł.
Mephisto podejmuje jednak dalszą grę i wysyła Rina do przeszłości, aby odkrył tajemnice swoich i brata narodzin.
(I’m just happy to be included)
Amazing!! The author did it again, left it with a cliffhanger that will ain't me until I get the new book. We get to visit the past as Rin learns more about his past and how his brother and he were born. And what is the secret of his birth? Also, why did Shiro took the boys in as we see from the past of his attitude towards demons and the like.
My heart couldn't handle what Shiro had to go through in section 13
We get a 'flashback' arc of sorts with the history of Shiro Fujimoto and Yuri (Rin and Yukio's mom). Seeing Shiro be an ass, instead of the more kind old man we know him as, is great. It's cool seeing Rin learn bits of information we've already learned from other sources, like Lightning's investigation, and getting a more full picture of the history of this setting. And it's starting to make sense more, actually seeing it happen rather than being explained away literally everything all at once.
I like flashback arcs as they allow us to see characters that are talked about and are referenced a lot a time to shine. Especially for characters that either died before the start of the story or died before they had a chance. And I do like we finally get to see Father Fujimoto a time to shine especially since we are told a lot about how strong he was. And I do like that Fujimoto and Rin and Yukio's mom are on opposite sides when it comes to demons.
We finally get to see a much-needed backstory of Fujimoto and Yuri (Rin and Yukio's mother). I'm not sure if Fujimoto is their father or not, but I guess Yuri did have a crush on him.
Side note here, but Mephisto telling Rin that he was telling Rin about his birth instead of Yukio because Yukio was the one who wanted to know but Rin didn't want to know anything, lol.

I need to start buying this series, it's really good! It's been really interesting to learn more about past events. It feels like we're slowly entering the end game, but there is definitely plenty left to take care of.
I always love a good travel to the past to see everything that happened and with this volume it delves Into the time before the blue night along with meeting the boys mother Interesting really interesting 🐑
Demons now called antisocial organisms are everywhere and people can see them now. Rin travels to the past and learns that his mother, Yuri was studying to be an exorcist as well. He also learns that Yuri was in love with Father Fujimoto.

I aren’t read Blue Exorcist in a while, and it’s never quite as enjoyable picking up a new volume when I’ve forgotten much of the previous ones. So parts of this weren’t as fun, but I’m still giving it four stars because I loved both Fr. Fujimoto and the boys’ mother in this one. Good characters.
Hate to say this but the flashback really works for me. It does not feel like it drags on or like it went in there simply because the author ran out of ideas or was stuck. Bonus points for Rin actually getting to experience it and the ensuing embarrassment.
What does Rin benefit from the past? It's great learning about it but how will it help him save the future since he is told not to interfere with anyone....? And poor Shiemi....who are those people and where are they taking her?!?! I knew Yuri loved Shiro!!!!
