Chakuro and the other Marked children have freed the Unmarked from the Amonlogian dungeon, but their rescue mission is far from over. The people of the Mud Whale still need to get back to their island home, and the path to safety is blocked by imperial soldiers. Even worse, Orca is determined to secure Ouni in order to carry out his diabolical plans!
In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!
The Premise
In Children of the Whales vol 12, we get the battles that we have been dying to get to... Between Orcas and Ouni!!! We still have Chakuro, Shuan and Lycos in the mix but we all know its the big guns we want to see. Ouni is feeling the pressure. We see him cracking and its ironic that Orcas points out his problem. Shuan though won't let Ouni stand alone. And Orcas has plenty of tricks to handle both of them... It was explosive and awe-inspiring and I loved every frame!!
The Buzz
Shuan in an unexpected character to me and I've enjoyed seeing him learn from the less powerful characters from the whale. In Children of the Whales vol 12 we reach a mile marker and he admits a secret that stuns the reader!! For him to admit this is what his dear wife always wanted, that she's gone now is heart breaking. I love how real and genuine the relationships that Abi Umeda crafts for us. And Orcas uses them to really rake Shuan and Ouni over the coals.
The Feels
Ro, the character on the cover of Children of the Whales vol 12, makes an unexpected appearance at the end of the volume. He about makes my heart palpitate out of my chest!! I love how Abi Umeda allows all the minor characters to have their moment in the limelight. Ro shines and I love seeing his friendship with Chakuro in action. Lycos has her facetime with her brother finally and it doesn't end well. Chakuro has some powerful friendships... and they are about to be tested in the worst ways.
The Visuals
The battles of Children of the Whales vol 12 are epic!! The art is what makes them so stellar. The paper copy will be what you want to pick up... because first you'll want that gorgeous cover on your shelf... and second because the art is even better in paper. Ouni makes his stand several times and refuses to back down from everything Orcas throws at him and its a beautiful thing. Even as he cracks under pressure his memories come to life. GAHHHHHH, so good.
Children of the Whales vol 12 gives us the battles with Orcas that we have been waiting for!! Some of them are with guns, some with time and some of the heart but more than one person won't be walking away from this fight... Will Ouni protect the children of the mud whale? It might happen at the cost of his own freedom...!

In this volume, we find that there’s far more to the story than what we’ve been told. Perhaps for someone who read every chapter closer together than myself, they could have pieced it together, but for me, a few of these things came as a surprise. As the story continues to develop and deepen, I’m kept on the edge of my seat, riddled with anxiety as I wonder this and wonder that.
Right now, everyone is being beaten up and severely injured. I don’t know who is going to make it and what will become of those who do. But with the appearance of a certain new character (and the revelation of certain alliances and uncovered truths), a lot is about to change.
It’s the climactic battle of the self-proclaimed (but probably true) god of death versus Ouni, the daímonas of Fálaina! And how Orca can shrug off those attacks... yeesh! Again, lots of action in this one. Everyone is trying to rescue everyone else, but it is hard to be a hero when everybody else is shooting at you. And, we discover that Chakuro may have something in common with another important figure in this story... Some brutal and bloody art in this volume, but always done beautifully. Read this series!
The biggest highlight of this book is the battles, with some long-awaited showdowns going on - we see Ouni go against Orca, Shuan against Orca, Lykos fighting against Liontari, and even Lykos engaging with her brother. On the other side, the Marked are leading the Unmarked to their escape off the island, while Chakuro goes in search of Lykos. The most amazing battle was between Ouni and Orca - with Orca proving why he is called the God of Death, and some emotional heart crushers are sure to hurt you when Ouni has to face his fears during the fight, when Orca unleashes Kyma (thereby unleashing memories) to distract him. At the end of this, someone really needs to wrap up Ouni in a blanket (preferably Chakuro) and comfort him because boy has been through A Lot. Actually, multiply that for all the Mud Whale characters because they have really been through a lot, and their suffering is not even at the end.
