I can understand people defending it and saying it is a masterpiece. I can understand people on the other side and being very angry and disgusted by this. However, I think I am somewhere in the middle. The whole series is fucked up and that's what kept me interested and reading. I know I did not like this. But at the same time, I was intrigued and interested in what is going to happen and how it will end. There were great individual scenes, but overall Fire Punch lacks consistency, good characters, worldbuilding and it does not care about the reader at all.

I think I got the message and at the same time, I know I did not. I am glad I read this, however, I did not like it, rather I was curious how it will fit together.

Fire Punch started out as a unique, mature, super-power having series much in the vein of many Jump comics only to have a lack luster ending. While worth the read, go in expecting not much of a payoff other than being able to pat yourself on the back saying "you got through this odd series."

“I’ve been thinking it over. Maybe the world would be happier staying cold as it is. Only when it's cold can you appreciate fire. And holding others close lets you feel their warmth.”

TW: Gore, graphic depictions of violence, death, body horror, allusions to incest, mentions of suicide, madness, depression.

Is this the greatest love story there is?

Weirdly enough, I think the answer to that question is, pretty much. While it is a terribly messed up and disturbing story most of the time as well, with the clarifications that this last volume brought, I think that at its core, Fire Punch is a love story with a lot of deep, raw, disturbing elements that it explores alongside.

I have hardly ever read a bigger trigger warning of a story before but, oh boy, is it worth it.

Honestly, it might have taken me a little while to wrap my head around what the ending meant but with a bit of time, I think it's quite a beautiful story.

“You don’t have to kill anyone anymore. I’m sorry for making you act like you’re my brother. You’re not an avenger. Nor a hero. Nor a god […] This time, be the you that you want to be. That’s my wish. Live.”

There really is no better place to understand a story than at its end and that falls perfectly real for this one. Fire Punch is a bit of a convoluted mess here and there, by very purposeful design, but one thing that holds true to the very end is the themes that we started exploring right at the beginning. And, oh, how have they developed and unfolded.

From social constructs to depression and the value/meaning of life and family we touch them all in surprisingly nuanced and deep ways. Nothing feels shallow and you can tell exactly what Fujimoto intended to say by the end of it all.

Not only is all beautiful exposed but the way that things came full circle really had my brain exploding in the best of ways possible.

The final confrontation was so unexpected and I wouldn't change a second of it.

“If you can’t do it [give him a happy life] then act as someone who can. If you do, you’ll become that someone. I’ve lived a long time and played a lot of roles, so I’ve come to learn something. People become who they want to be.”

Being the first of Fujimoto's works there was much I was unsure of, interested about but I can fully say that it bears his mark all over it, while being a little bolder and unhinge than more recent works.

Fire Punch truly is one of those works that everyone should give a try and experience once in their lives. Sure, proceed with caution, is not a work suited to everyone, it is heavy and unapologetic but it bears some important truths that will mark you if you only give them a chance.

With unforgettable characters, an interesting world to explore, and an intriguing connecting tissue there is much to enjoy in it.

“I had nothing to do for a long time. Sometimes my body would stretch and twist like it remembered doing but nothing would happen. I’d try shouting, but space is a vacuum so I’d make no sound. Sometimes I feel like I’ll forget why I’m here, so I repeat it to myself again and again. I’m […] for a single man’s sake […] because I wish for his happiness. I’ve already forgotten what his name was. My own name too. I’ve even forgotten what kind of life I used to lead. It’s only my role that I cannot forget. If he’s not at least happy, I’ll regret all this empty time for the rest of eternity.”

Like many people, I got into Fire Punch because I absolutely loved Chainsaw Man and wanted to read other works by the mangaka. I heard a lot of conflicting opinions about the series but wanted to give it a go anyway. Now that I finished the series, I am SO glad that I read it!

It really was thought-provoking and despite what people say about the ending, I feel that it suited the series. I wouldn’t recommend this to the faint of heart though since it deals with a lot of sensitive subject matter (especially in that first volume). I do have to say that I still prefer Chainsaw Man , but Fire Punch was absolutely fantastic as well.

Well that sucked.

An extended slaughter sequence gives way to the stupidest ending possible. Ugh.

The early volumes had so much chaotic energy and potential. What a waste.

This volume provides a pretty satisfying conclusion and brings everything neatly together. Honestly a very strong finish.

This might very well be the wildest ride I've had in a manga. Just never stopped surprising me. I'd probably rank it at a solid 8 out of 10 with the caveat that it's not for everyone. It honestly could've reached masterpiece levels if it had better execution of its themes and left out a few of the... less savory elements.

Will probably post a full series review later.

Fire Punch might be hella fucked up, brutal, disgusting, downright diabolical. But Agni be damned, Fujimoto knew how to write his characters. Insane story, amazing characters, one of THE best trans characters i've seen in fiction and more. Might be better than Chainsaw Man (atleast better than part 2)

so sad togata died so early on, was my favorite character. i loved the trans rep we got, and i would've loved the main character wayyy more if the entire plot didn't revolve around him being in love with his sister (or the copy of her.) very gross and the ending was just... eh? i can't imagine it going any differently but idk i didn't care for how it ended really... still was pretty interesting overall and the story took a lot of turns i didn't expect.

Finally finished this series, and even though it was definitely a wild ride, I don't exactly think it was a pleasant one. The one constant throughout Fire Punch is the introduction of new characters and settings. Tatsuki has a talent for creating characters within an interesting grim dystopian future, however, he also has a talent for prematurely destroying those same characters and settings. Aside from our protagonist I almost don't think it's worth learning who any of the side characters are, as no matter how seemingly overpowered they are, they might just die a few chapters later. Even our protagonist isn't safe as he regularly goes through personality shifts, becoming a different person inside the same body, to the point that by the end I don't even know if I was rooting for him or not, as he felt like a stranger. Now, I'm not against characters dying, but when you're trying to consume an entertaining narrative their shortened life expectancies becomes a hindrance to enjoyment. There's a dreamlike quality to the work, you meet people you feel unusually attached too, where everybody's actions don't seem to make sense and can instantly change, and you end up doing or seeing cool stuff. However, like a dream, no matter how interesting, you wake up and forget what happened or who those characters were. This is the feeling I'm left with at the end of Fire Punch, a cool but easily forgotten experience.

The fuel of Fire Punch seems to me, to be subverted expectations. There is in my mind no coherent narrative to the story, unless you can call torture porn a narrative. An interesting setting or cool character is introduced at the end of every volume, in order to whet your appetite for more, only for it to become pointless at the beginning of the next volume. I feel bad for readers who purchased every volume as it might have felt like a bait and switch every time. Fool me once shame on you, fool me eight times shame on me. I don't think constantly subverting expectations makes for a good story and neither does over-the-top gore or violence, especially for 8 volumes. Even by the end of the story our protagonist wonders what his goal was, what was the point of his journey, and even though those philosophical musings can make for an interesting narrative, it makes the reader wonder the same thing, if there was any point to reading about his journey as well.

If there was any kind of central message to the story, I'm guessing it was something like "You don't need to play the role society assigns for you." There was one section of the work, I think in volume seven that was more on the nose for this theme, where one character discusses how we perceive an actor's personality by what role he plays and not from what he's like in reality, the example being that Tom cruise looks cool on film, but is crazy in real life. At the end of the day, I don't necessarily believe a story needs to have a "message" or "moral", but without those merits I felt like Fire Punch was lacking in both entertainment value and aesthetic beauty. There were some action scenes in this work where I had no idea what was going on. Tatsuki uses a really rough artstyle where it looks more like a rough screenplay rather than a polished comic, with some panels looking unfinished. In terms of entertainment value, too many interesting characters where killed off, and with a protagonist who admits he's a dummy, watching him going through a tortured life wasn't that interesting.

The very end of this work has some sort of weak philosophical mumbo jumbo. Something like "If you could live for eternity, would life be worth living?", something which I'm sure other works of art and literature have covered extensively. The tail end of the work is very aesthetic and so I think with that final impression, along with the over the top violence forming the highs of the work, biases readers towards a positive perception. Personally, I think there's a lot of good ideas in Fire Punch that could have made an interesting story but readers got short-changed in order for the narrative to fit the overarching messaging of the work. If you set your timeline to a millennia, where none of the small conflicts in the book matter, then why would an author flesh them out past what's necessary to draw a cool fight scene. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Fire Punch, though I'm glad I got to see where the meme image of Agni's face is from.

I have a love hate relationship with the last chapter.

Also, the camera! It survived being lost in the woods for Gods knows how long and then combined times kips of 90 years. What is this camera made of? Recycled Nokia phones?

Anti-climatic ending but what else could be expected.

Gonna start off by listing the things I really like about this

- the sorta larger theme of identity - who you are - are you just who people see and treat you as? Are you "lying" when you try to become someone you are not - the larger message of like ... you can BECOME who you want to even if you have to lie your way to that end -- and the way it's handled is cool.

- the best part of that theme is Togata's character - his transmasculinity being tied to this idea of wanting to become a hero in movies- his "flippant femininity" as a result of the dysphoria - his sort of impulse to want to BE like agni/fire man while also wanting to destroy him - and even though Togata died I think it was a really cool complete story - he got to be what he wanted to be in his moments of dying - v v cool

- I like how the world of this manga exists on such a purely symbol level but it's still material and real - but idk the movie theater as this prominent thing - WORLD OF ICE and this BURNING MAN - warmth - fist bumps - the black haired Akira and ALL the white haired ryou equivalents - the way time skips and the way society evolves - almost foundation vibes but less attempt at being meticulous than asimov and all the reorganizations of the world, new rules in powers, memory losses ALL sort of serve this larger symbolic system built up and it works!

- I like Sun's characterr - the exploration of his like enamourment with Agni - becoming a believer in the Agni cult and the miracles of it all by the end - idk it was a cool development for him and the larger religion thing in this which I think is quite well done!

- I like the very end visually esp. and the way this uses its immortal characters - very Robo sapiens vibes the way millenia keep passing and Judah/Luna in the tree is portrayedd - that kinda like immortal being floating in weird liminal space (literal space) is v much up my alley

- OBVIOUSLY this manga looks v good - but yeah the iconic look back montage -- this has SO many moments like that - fist bump montage - face burning montage - the way it handles time and like dream logic and visions and emotions visually is so so good -- ALSO the fights are v v good it feels like fujimoto is literally drawing key frames - a lot of the background art esp. in like spread bird eye view stufff sooo good - Also just the cinematic quality of the paneling - the way the "camera" moves -- the way little character expression and gestures are captured - Fujimoto sure is a talented mangaka hot take.

The only real thing I disliked which unfortunately is a pre major part of this manga is the core agni/luna and agni/judah relationship - in the beginning when it's like ooo INCEST (which tbh I like that it's played sincerely THROUGHOUT and not in an edgy way at all) -- but yea Luna portrayed in this v tragic shounen waifu cute girl way and she dies bleh

But then when Judah comes and she has the FACE of Luna but she's constantly like IM NOT LUNA - I thought that was actually v cool - I liked all the angst of Judah asking Agni to kill her but him not being able to cuz she looks like Luna - what I dislike tho was when Judah lost her memories Agni kinda MAKES her into Luna? And initially im like ooo interesting he's lying and misleading - but then she v much BECOMES Luna - and all the romance whatever scenes w them esp. w the usual Shounen slight sexualization in a weird male gazey way - idk all of that made me feel quite disappointed in the way she was handled and so the effect of the ending is kinda tamped by that even tho conceptually i love everything the ending was doing

Like I GET that the point of this is that both Agni and Judah were terrible people who killed so many people in Agni's quest for revenge/Judah's righteousness - and that the whole thing w the end is that Judah says she's Luna and BECOMES that and Agni says he's Sun and BECOMES that - and people can make you into something else eventually you lose your memories and your identity shifts - and the way all that ties into transness IS COOL - but it's just sucky because of the TYPE of character Luna is is v lame and annoyingly handleddd

Anyway as Trial of the Golden Witch said, DEVILMAN DEVILMAN DEVILMAN DEVILMAN DEVILMAN DEVILMAN EVERYTHING IS DEVILMAN

The series as a whole felt very disjointed and I felt as if many of the characters (San especially) lacked a certain depth. This is not a critisism of the author entirely as Chainsaw man seems to be a vast improvement. The only character I found really had much depth was Togata who died much earlier on. I found that characters would appear again have a line or two and then die. Therefore, I didn't really come to care for them. However, the series has a super interesting premise and is quite short and also incredibly fast-paced.

2.5 overall.

A nasty and painful story. I'm sure it's a metaphor for depression. Again and again the plot frays and becomes completely unrecognizable, and yet I never lost touch with the overarching themes and emotions.

A big big plus for Togata. His character was so awesome and sooo funny and he's the first trans man I've ever seen appear in a manga or anime

This series is weird, interesting, thought provoking, gross, but above all it was weird.

The rating in my head kept fluctuating, the beginning was completely amazing, but it kept on becoming weirder. Some of the art was great but some panels I had absolutely no idea what was going on. The premise seemed amazing but some of the plot choices came out of nowhere. I can see this series growing on me over the following weeks but for now it gets a 3 star rating.

What a strange series. Alas, reading it taught me three things; it does not care about the reader's experience; I really don't like the story; and I had to know how it ended. I would never recommend the series to anyone, it's incredibly inconsistent in every way, there is not one compelling character and it's just uncomfortable and hard to follow.

I am unlikely to ever read a work by Fujimoto again, but for some reason I am pleased I finished this series. I am not sure why, but then again I don't even know what happened in this 8 volume series so maybe that is for the best?

Disappointing conclusion to a promising series. Unfortunately the author abandoned his initial premise in favor of a series of confounding non sequiturs, going for empty flash over the hard work of telling a coherent story.

I half held out hope that he would somehow tie it all together in the end, which seemed unlikely given the mess he had gotten himself into, but there is no big revelation. He simply kills off the remaining cast at random, until only the mc and his girlfriend are left. (The rest of humanity is extinct) They float around empty space for thousands of years before inexplicably meeting, exchanging platitudes, and apparently finding true love. This rings hollow given that they are both mass murderers and everyone else is dead.

I think the author realized this himself, because he includes a scene near the end where the mc is in a theater watching a movie of his life, depicting events from the manga, and he wonders what the point of all the random killing, burning, and resurrection is.

Well, there is no point.

The concepts and world building in the first 4 volumes of fire punch are excellent, and I think this whole thing would have turned out much better if Fujimoto had stuck with the idea of taking down the ice witch. Instead the story loses focus amid a haze of smoke and shadows.

The art is flawed - faces and figures need a lot of work, but the backgrounds are often impressive, though likely the work of assistants. The depiction of fire and other effects using just black and white linework is masterful. Paneling and pacing are excellent, the story flows smoothly and cinematically, except in those places where the drawing itself fails or the story takes one of its hard left turns.

Fujimoto is certainly brilliant, but this is a self indulgent, undisciplined, juvenile work.

End. 1401/4/24
