What a fabulous book and a fabulous idea! This is an Advent book. You read one chapter a day starting with December 1 and end on Christmas.

Most chapters are roughly 4 pages. The illustrations are magnificent! And the story, of a little mouse with a very important letter to deliver, was actually intriguing. So intriguing it made me want to cheat and read the next days ahead of time. You should not do that however. You cannot cheat with an Advent calendar!

Disclaimer: I do not have children. I read this book along with my husband. I suppose our cats may have listened. But who knows with them. They are cats. They do what they want.

Winston zou zeggen: lekker kersterig.

A simple and lovely adventure story about a lost letter for Santa and one brave mouse determined to bring it. The story itself is nothing too special except that it's really cute, illustrations are lovely and the fact that it's also an Adventure calendar full of ideas is just brilliant.

A cute story, I have to say my favorite part was the unique illustrations and the ending. I'm not a fan of the way the book is split up into 25 sections for Advent, but it's okay and I understand why the authors did that.

Son's Review
(Age: 4)
That was fun! Did you notice it's all different stamps? Can we read it again, right away? Winston is soooo cute and adorable! Let's read it again before Christmas; let's read it in Advent.

On Winston himself:
He's just so cute and adorable. I'm bringing [paper] Winston because he wanted to read.
(T's paper Winston accompanied us through several events of the day.)

On what's important to know:
The crafts!!!

On the crafts:
We'll do each craft in there, okay Mom?
You know, I'd like to make the pet robin today because the pet robin isn't a Christmas thing one single bit.

On finding a letter to Santa on Christmas Eve:
I'd give it to Santa. I'd look for a red light in the sky. So I'd have a ladder, and I'd climb up onto a building, and if I saw a helicopter I'd grab onto it. I'd give the letter to Santa Claus.

Mom's Review
A tiny mouse in a world of humans preparing for Christmas, Winston just wants to find a warm place to sleep, but he finds a letter to Santa Claus on Christmas Eve and endeavors to deliver it himself. Winston braves a busy intersection, a cat, a rat, an airplane flight, and a blizzard before he ultimately collides with Santa's sleigh and delivers the letter. Divided into 25 chapters, How Winston Delivered Christmas is paced perfectly for bedtime each night of December through Christmas. You could read them during the day, but we found the chapters an ideal balance of excitement, wind-down, and length for our night routine.

Following each chapter is a Christmas or winter craft, many of which relate to the events of the previous chapter. Although it is waaaaaaay too early for anything Christmas in my book, we did make some of them. Partly because I wanted to be able to judge them and partly because T loves to do crafts and was eager to make almost everything all at once (we did not do what he wanted). One of the first crafts is to make your own Winston out of paper. It was easy, adorable, and used materials we had at home; many of the crafts are ones you could do spur-of-the moment, though above a 4YO's scissor skills. There are also Christmas songs in the back. Having How Winston Delivered Christmas is like one big Christmas gift: a story that lasts all month, little presents to make, and songs to sing.

If you count down to Christmas or like seasonal stories (or both), then I highly recommend How Winston Delivered Christmas. And that's from someone who doesn't like animals teaming up with Santa. Though Winston doesn't, he just delivers a letter.

Why we chose this book:
I normally avoid Christmas animal stories. This one sounded a bit different, with its purpose being a story and activities to enjoy all Advent. Advent is one of our favorite seasons, so I thought we'd give this book a try. A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Winston is a little mouse, just trying to stay warm on the streets of the city. On Christmas Eve, he finds a letter addressed to Santa, and determines to make sure the lost letter reaches Santa before it's too late! Along the way, he meets other creatures who advise him on his journey, and finds help in the most unexpected corners.

I loved the story! Winston is so adorable and sweet. He's very brave and spunky, and I loved all the quirky characters that he meets. The plot really moves along with different twists and turns, and lots of descriptions of beautiful holiday decorations and food and toys that Winston gazes at longingly.

The illustrations are beautiful and colorful and entertaining! I love the cute expressions on Winston's face, and how each character comes to life in the artwork.

This book is divided into chapters that can be read each day in December, finishing the story on Christmas Day. Each chapter includes a Christmas activity, craft, game, or event that you can do for some festive fun every day in December. The crafts look really enjoyable, and the instructions are simple. These would be such fun activities to do together with the whole family during the holiday season!

I don't know if the set-up with 24 chapters really works though. It would be too hard to wait until the next day to read the rest of the story! I would read the whole thing in one sitting, or maybe read part on Christmas Eve and part on Christmas Day. There is no way I could wait the entire month, hearing the story in little pieces. Every chapter ends on a cliff-hanger, and it makes the reader want to keep reading.

This is the perfect book to read together as a family during Christmas, and do some of the activities together!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review. All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts, and are not influenced by anyone.

Even though Christmas is over, I can't say that this didn't help spread a shred of Christmas spirit or cheer. However, once you realise that the mouse could have just posted the letter again after it flew out of the letterbox and have avoided so much trouble and near death experiences, the story takes a boring toll. The sense of adventure isn't too keen as Winston makes acquaintances with some pigeons, a cat and a rat. They try to help him but all fail miserably as the poor mouse desperately tries to deliver a letter to Father Christmas.

I suppose that the moral of the story is that nobody should be sad around Christmas time and especially on Christmas day. Winston did his utmost and even risked his life to ensure that Oliver received what he asked for. The mouse ended up living in a lovely house built exactly to his ideals for his bravery despite the fact that him meeting Santa in time was just a huge coincidence and hence deeming or rendering the entire novel pointless or approximately 75% of it.

The illustrations are wonderful and extremely jolly and the writing style is rather straight forward which I thoroughly enjoyed. I do wish to read more chapter books as they are quick reads and most of the time, fun ones. One is never too old to appreciate books meant for children which birth nostalgia left, right and centre.

Borrowed from the library as a Christmas read.

4/5 ⭐

➕ Positives:

- The illustrations were so beautiful and made me enjoy the book so much more than if it had just been writing. They made me smile every time I picked the book up.

- The advent calendar chapters. There are 25 chapters, which means children can read one a day in December. I've never seen anything like that before, and I thought it was really smart and sweet. I didn't read it like that but, especially for children, that's a lovely option.

- The atmosphere of Christmas and cosiness that was created throughout the book. Really lovely.

- The moral behind the story is a lovely one.

➖ Negatives:

- The plot was quite simplistic but that's to be expected from a children's book. I still enjoyed it a fair amount.

⚖️ Overall:

- I'm aware I'm not the target audience for this book so haven't been harsh about the plot or characters (both of which are fairly simplistic).

- I enjoyed it a lot and am glad I picked it up. Quick, cosy Christmas read!

- I'd recommend (especially to children).

A truly magical book for the young and young at heart. A beautiful Advent story that starts on December 1st and continues all the way until December 25th. This book is filled with a wonderful Christmas message, crafts, recipes, fun facts, and Christmas carol lyrics.
Winston is the kindest, most selfless little mouse you're ever likely to meet. Winston is searching to find somewhere warm and dry to see out the storm,as well as something to eat. However, his searching is stopped when he comes across a lost letter that should be destined for the North Pole, as it's addressed to Santa Claus. This special letter was written by Oliver, who may not get his Christmas wish and gift in time for Christmas, if his letter doesn't reach Santa. Winston sets out on an adventure to take the letter to the North Pole, with many mishaps and distractions along the way.
This is such a charming book filled with the true meaning of Christmas, as well as whimsical illustrations for all the family to enjoy.

Urocza historia o dzielnej myszce i niedostarczonym liście do Świętego Mikołaja.
