The Ultimate Guide to Mushrooms: How to Identify and Gather Over 200 Species Throughout North America and Europe, by Guillaume Eyssartier is an excellent encyclopedia of mushroom species with an eye for distinguishing toxic mushrooms from edible ones, and a small section on more bizarre and interesting mushrooms. The book gives a brief overview of some methods of identification, including sacs, spore print, and the usefulness of cutting, amongst others. The book also focuses on the culinary usefulness of mushrooms, with some important tips, like "Never eat a mushroom you are not 100% sure about" and "Do not eat edible mushrooms in large quantities - they can still be toxic by accumulation" among many others. The focus on the taste and culinary properties of the mushrooms in this book, as well as common mistakes that are made in mixing up look-alikes, makes this book rather unique. It is also well illustrated, and detailed in terms of the properties and identifiers of each species, with some fun facts. I enjoyed this as a coffee table read, and would recommend it to those interested in mushrooms and plant identification.

would love a dichotomous key but beautiful illustrations and information! i wish they’d given their definition of “inedible” and “deadly” because it’s all relative…
