Giant Days collected #11

Giant Days, Vol. 11

Rate this book
It’s Daisy, Esther and Susan’s third year at university, and with that comes new beaus, new jobs, and new adventures.

The third (and final!) year of university is finally here, and BFFs Daisy, Esther, and Susan are in for some surprising upsets in their first semester. Between Halloween run-ins with Daisy’s dreaded (dreadful) ex, part time gigs at a shady pop-up Christmas market, Esther dating a tech-bro and Susan attempting to be…romantic, there’s still plenty to learn and more than enough misadventure to squeeze in before it’s time to don caps and gowns! Written by John Allison (Scary Go Round, By Night) and illustrated by the incredible Max Sarin, Giant Days volume 11 kicks off third year with a bang, collecting issues #41-44 of the Eisner-Nominated series as well as the 2018 Holiday Special, Where Women Glow and Men Plunder.

After being rejected by beautiful Goth princess Esther, Ed Gemmell’s been mending his broke heart (and ankles) with Amazonian Aussie babe Extreme Sports Nina – and the two have fallen in love! So, irony of ironies, when Ess sees Ed and Neen together for the first time, she realises she’s in love with Ed too! Two drop-dead gorges chasing after you? Ed, mate: hi-fucking-five! And TEACH ME!

To cobble together the pennies for a plane ticket to visit Neen’s parents in Oz over the holidays (see the spin-off Chrimbo special for how that went), Ed goes to work at a pop-up Christmas Market - that’s definitely not a cult - with Daisy. And as Valenbrimes Day approaches, McGraw plays an unlikely cupid to Ess and a new beau while Daisy falls for a new car-crash student, Coralie.

Artist Max Sarin is back and so is Giant Days’ untouchable quality – Volume 11 is flawless. It’s corny but I love the will-they, won’t-they Ess/Ed thing. And I really like Neen too and I want her and Ed to be happy! So clearly an Ed Gemmell clone storyline, complete with jean jackets, must now happen to satisfy all. Daisy and Ed getting brainwashed by charismatic manipulator Cliff was so funny and the smash cuts from Ed storming into Cliff’s office to getting totally bamboozled made me laugh out loud twice.

They don’t really have a big part to play in this book but Susan and McGraw have become the warm gooey centre of Giant Days. Susan feeding McGraw lasagne on the floor and McGraw’s words to Susan on Valembrines Day were beyond adorbs. I love those guys so much! And I was happy to see Ess get some herself after doing the decent thing for Ed and Neen – her whirlwind romance looks like it’s going to be a fun future storyline.

11 volumes in and this series isn’t letting up on the goods – if anything, it’s getting better! Giant Days: if I could replace my blood with it, I would.

Great to see the series back on solid ground after a disappointing tenth volume. However, the less said about the pitiful 'bonus' chapter, the better...

Well! After an uneventful and pretty unmemorable volume, this is All About Memorable, in that Ed's (surprise) new girlfriend Nina takes him home to see her Australian family! Lots of fun in the down under. Can non-athlete Ed hold up under the All Sports All the Time environment? (correct)

(But how is Esther doing about this? Well, read it, but this creates a realization in her she hadn't anticipated. But Nina is a very likable character! Hard to hate, even for Esther lovers! And speaking of lovers, yay about Susan and McGraw, settling into a more adult groove. Glad to have Max Sarin back!

It's always good to be back with the lovely and fun girls of this wonderful comic series. I'm so sad I've only got a few volumes left and then I'm going to be done, I'm going to miss them all so much! I enjoyed this volume, but I really hope I get the chance to see more of Ed in the next one, I'm so looking forward to see more of his story and I also really hope for something to happen between him and Esther, we'll see.

One of the best recent volumes (in already fun series.). Nina is turning out to be such a likable character, I hope she becomes permanent member of cast.

More Ed Gemmell, please and thank you! This series continues to impress me. It would be very easy to find the events highly repetitive, as each volume focuses on a handful of months whilst the characters are at Sheffield University. This continues to feel fresh, fun, and fabulous throughout every volume, however.

It has been waaaaay too long since I've picked up a new volume of this series and I'm so happy to have read this. ♥ This is easily my favorite graphic novel series and I really just never, ever get tired of time spent with these 3 and their ridiculous antics (and McGraw! I'm so happy to be seeing him regularly in these issues again!). I hope John Allison keeps writing these graphic novels forever. 🥰

UPDATE: Literally 5 minutes after writing this mini-review, I learned that, though the final volume bind-up hasn't gone to print yet, the series is already over and I only have a few more issues ahead of me. Reader... I cried.

Senior year and suddenly we're zipping from Halloween through Christmas and Valentine's Day to spring break. Where'd the time go? It feels a bit like it is being frittered away, but this outing is still an enjoyable time spent with familiar and fun characters. Alas, they spend much of the time apart in their own storylines, when they work best as a group.

I feel like I sound like a broken record when it comes to this graphic novel series because I just go on and on about how great it is and how much I love McGraw. And I don’t have anything much different to say this time around which just goes to further prove how fabulous this series is. It just feels good when I’m reading it and time flies when I’m hanging out with these girls!

Stāsta turpinājums ir tieši tāds, kā sagaidīju - lieliski zīmējumi, interesanti sižeta pavērsieni un sagādā man gan smieklus, gan liek just līdzi iemīļotajiem varoņiem.

I love this series - I've been reading them for many years now, starting when I was a fresher like the characters, and now I am most definitely not (!). Each volume is a low-stress, big-hijinks slice of slightly surreal life, and I'm going to be dipping in and out of them as long as they're being published.

As always, this was a really cute volume but there wasn't really anything in here that blew me away or made me laugh at out loud. Also I feel like it covered a really big chunk of time - like half of their year! Going at this pace there's probably only going to be one or maybe two more volumes and that makes me sad. Also I really love Nina, and not just because I'm sick to death of the whole ~will they won't they~ thing with Ed and Esther [but kudos to her for doing the right thing!].

Extra star for Ed’s crazy Australian girlfriend. Yes, I understood all of the words that they were using 😂😂😂

Extra love for Esther doing the right thing for someone she cares about even if it’s not what she wanted

I think I laughed out loud more often in this volume than in any previous. This series is still firing on all cylinders, with the humor, the drama, the relationships, and the characters all in sync. We get a Christmas adventure with Cult-like influences, aftershocks of a bad breakup, and a trip to Australia; each situation is full of laughs and drama, much of which plays out in unexpected, but completely in character, ways. I don't know what else to say about this except this series is still wonderful and still heartily recommended.

My only real complaint with this one was how much time was burnt through so quickly. I might just be imagining it, but I'm pretty sure the first few volumes took place over a few weeks or a couple of months tops so it was easier to get wrapped up in story arcs than it is in this more spaced out volume.

I'm also very aware that things are speeding up because we're getting close to the end and that makes me sad :(.

How can everyone in this book be so RIDICULOUS and yet so emotionally competent at the same time? I don't know but I love it and love everyone. Note: this book is extra fat because it includes the special Christmas issue illustrated by John Allison where Ed Gemmell travels to Australia for some shenanigans. Nice.

The big events here were a run-in with Ingrid at Halloween, Daisy and Ed having a horrendous time at a pop-up Christmas village, Esther tries dating a tech mogul and finally Ed has misadventures in Australia with his girlfriend over break.

All fantastic and I'm sad I'm nearing the end of this journey.

4.5 on the blog.

They have started changing the art style mid story and then back again. I think this started in volume #10, but I'm not completely sure. I don't like it and I'm going to Google to see if there's an explanation for it. However, I love the story and characters so much I can't bring myself to pull the rating down a full star. It's like the publisher doesn't understand a graphic novel's reader is usually just as invested in loving the art as they are the story.

Now that I'm thinking about it they may have had guest illustrators for some single issues, which translated to style changes in the volume bind-ups.
