Dean starts the intro to his book by referencing what he learned from many of the business books published before it. These books informed his thinking and professional philosophy. Dean is a reader, like the best in business.

What he’s learned in his career and life, he shares with us in bite sized chapters following that intro. And some is obvious, but much is profound, and all is heartfelt because Dean can’t help being authentic and earnest in his advice.

By not looking past the basics, he shows why they’re important. You can’t run a business before you can walk. The simple lessons are sometimes the hardest to master. Thank goodness we have Dean to consult along the way.

There’s no coincidence for me when I get to these two chapters back to back: “Value of a Mentor” and “What Does Character Mean?” because everyone should be as lucky to have a mentor like Dean show you his true character. Fortunately we have his book. Read and live it.
