The Monster under the Bed

Rate this book

Michael swallowed. His father, screaming. His mother, her mouth open, eyes glazed, as he panicked and power swirled around her too. “Then you know.”

I don ’t know exactly what you’ ve done, ” the dragon corrected. “ I  know darkness. I can sense it. Jonathon ignores darkness,  because he has no fear of it.”

“Why not?”

“That is for him to tell you. Even as it is for you to tell him what you have done.” In a gentler tone, the dragon added, “Jonathon has looked into many a dark place for others. That’s his job. Yours would not frighten him.”

There’s something wrong with him, as Michael’s mother has told him many times. What she doesn’t know is that he can use magic, and sometimes it escapes his control. All he wanted was for her to be happy, for his father to notice him. And they, and he, are suffering because he couldn’t manage his power.

Now a Soulsearcher called Jonathon has entered their lives, an adult who can still use magic. Because of Jonathon, Michael has flown on dragons, challenged unicorns, and met gryphons. But can Jonathon be trusted to teach him how to control his power? And can the Soulsearcher do so before Michael loses his battle with the monster under his bed?

Priest by day, writer at odd times of the day and night, I live with a small green parrot called Tilly because the upkeep for a dragon is beyond my current budget. Plus I’m responsible for making good any flame damage to church property. I love ‘Doctor Who’, landscape photography, single malt whisky, and my job, in no particular order. When I’m not looking after a small parish church in the Midlands (England) I like to go on far flung adventures to places like Peru, New Zealand, and North Korea.

This is such a deep book dealing with our deepest fears and not knowing how to handle these or where they came from. It deals with the psychology of a person and is written in such a beautiful and magical way that the lessons which can be learnt through the book are given with a dollop of honey to make them palatable. Well done Chrys Cymri for this amazing novel, it touched my very soul, thank you for writing this!

So much to love and hate here.

Twelve year old Michael still has the power, but he uses it wrong. It broke his mom and his dad, and now he's stuck with the consequences of his power, trying to keep it contained, along with the monster under his bed.

And then a man comes, one who also has the power, though Jonathon's not broken like Michael. Jonathon is patient and kind and shows Michael things that seem impossible, like gryphons and unicorns.

But Michael doesn't deserve such a man in his life. Jonathon doesn't know the darkness that lives in Michael. If he knew...

Will Michael ever learn to defeat the darkness, or will it consume him entirely?

This is an incredibly emotional story. It's both breathtakingly beautiful and heartbreaking awful in equal measure. The battle for wholeness is as real as anything, and I found myself in tears more often than not.

This book bears an incredibly powerful message, and is not your typical leisure read. Definitely worth a read, just be sure to have a good friend and a box of tissues handy.

Needed careful reading

Michael spends his young life believing his parents who tell him that the bad things that have happened are all his fault. He believes he deserves all the mental and physical abuse they pile on him. Then, magic and Jonathon come into his life, leading him on a journey of self-discovery.

I read this slowly and carefully to make sure I had all the characters straight, as there was a purpose for each person in the story. Good use of mythology.

This is the first book of Cymri's I read that was not part of her terrific Penny White series. At first, I wasn't sure it was going to be my cup of tea, but as I got farther into it, I realized I wasn't going to get anything else done until I'd finished it.

Enjoyed it!

This Book is Amazing

I have enjoyed everything I have read by Ms. Cymri, and this was no exception. It is an intense battle between good and evil, taking place within the framework of a young boy's experience. There is much that is painful, hard to read and absorb. But there is incredible beauty and amazing truth. This book will stay with me for a very long time.

Children believe in magic, but what happens when your just not sure?

Michael met many who believed, even believed himself, but it didn't make things get better for he and his parents. This is Michaels story and how he finally found himself.

Read and enjoy!!!

Excellent coming of age story. Awakens a sense of childlike wonder. Imaginative and helped me to cope with my own "monsters under the bed."
