The Wyoming Cowboy #3

A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe

Rate this book
‘Tis the season for starting over for one military man turned cowboy in this new novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Cowboy and His Baby.

Former Navy master-at-arms Jason Clements is down on his luck and calling in one last favor. His cousin has secured him a job opportunity as a cowboy working at Price Ranch in Wyoming. Too bad Jason has never even saddled a horse. If he can keep this job without his PTSD getting in the way, it’ll be a Christmas miracle.

Local busybody Sage Cooper loves Painted Barrel something fierce, but it’s time for her to move on. Since her father passed away, the family ranch feels too big for just her, and there’s no chance of finding a husband in this small town. To the rest of the world, she’s just another local fixture, known for her closet full of ugly Christmas sweaters and being perpetually single.

It isn’t until Jason shows up in desperate need of a cowboy crash course that Sage discovers a tall, dark, and handsome reason to stick around. And with the holidays coming up, Sage is in need of a date for a special event—maybe they’ll turn out to be each other’s best Christmas present.

This is a pen name for Jill Myles.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the 'naughty parts' of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

I’m not a regular reader of Cowboy books (In fact, the titles embarrass me a wee bit! 😂), and I’ve not read any others in this series, but A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe was a quick, easy read with some good emotion and drama, exactly what you expect from a holiday romance. I loved watching Sage and Jason’s romance unfold, and it proved to be a great escape and just the type of read I needed at the time.

OMG I fell hard for this one!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you read a lot of books like I do it takes something special to really capture my attention. This book had something special and I’m not sure I can really put my finger on but I’ll try.
I think one of the main things that drew my attention is the way the author created her characters. They both were vulnerable but yet have pride in themselves.
I think that’s what’s missing in many stories where someone is held down or pushed down. The characters are written with that negative energy in themselves. While Jason had some, Sage’s amazing support and friendship just turned him around in a minute.
What’s best of all is the amazing friendship that they built first. From that love just came naturally. He was so gentle and kind and loving to her and she was the same to him.
I absolutely love that the author took the time to write this book with amazing positive energy, steamy love, sweet surprise, and much needed grace throughout the entire story. Beautiful five-star read that envelops what a shining, warm romance story should be.
I think Jessica Clare may have captured all of the best in emotions and healing in this Holiday tale; what being a true friend is, a romance that blooms slowly and caring about those around you, not to mention a heated passion that was built from a steadily growing spark.
A COWBOY UNDER THE MISTLETOE is so much more positive than so many stories, not that Jason’s problems do not exist or that Sage has never been seen as anything more than the local “go to” fixture. Two people who just need someone in their corner with an open heart and open arms find humor, hope and heat that could last a lifetime!
Small town characters, sometimes a little quirky, sometimes a little hard, this well-told tale makes a wonderful, magical gift of reading that reminds us that everybody needs somebody!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Berkley! This is my honest and voluntary review.
Jason, an ex-navy guy hasn’t had the best luck with jobs since his PTSD has him struggling with panic attacks that are even worse now that he lost his support dog. At his ends, he takes a job as a ranch hand even though he has zero experience. Thankfully, he runs into Sage, and she offers him a trade: she’ll give him a crash course in ranching if he’ll be her date at her friend Greg’s rehearsal dinner and wedding. Sage is tired of being known as Greg’s mooning sidekick but finding a date in the small town of Painted Barrel has so far been an impossible task! Jason is tall, dark, and handsome, but more than that he’s a sweet, hard working man and Sage’s heart aches for all the struggles he’s had to endure.
Sage had such a big heart, loneliness making her a bit naïve in the past when it came to Greg. That guy was a complete idiot, and I’m happy Sage didn’t let him walk all over her once she got a clue.
Jason can’t believe that Sage, both beautiful and sweet, has struggled to find a date, and has been at the beck-and-call of a douchebag like Greg. Jason doesn’t feel like he deserves her either when his PTSD easily sends him into a panic, but if Sage feels he’s worthy he’s not fool enough to pass up a chance to be with her. I was so happy Jason didn’t deprive them of love because of feeling unworthy at times. Their relationship was slow and steady at first, but boy did it build up into a wickedly hot romance!
I just loved A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe! It was such a delightful wintery/holiday read: small town, snowy nights, ugly Christmas sweaters, homemade cookies, gift giving, ranching, and a sweet rescue dog! Jason and Sage brought out the best in each other, providing support and inspiring confidence where lacking. Also, they brought so much passion and joy to each other I was filled with happiness that they met!
I can’t wait for Becca’s story next!
This is the second book I’ve read in this series set in and around Painted Barrel, Wyoming. Jason Clements arrives in town desperate for a new start. His cousin has recommended him for the job, but Jason knows absolutely nothing about ranching, although he’s always been a willing worker and he’s not afraid of hard or dirty work. A veteran of the Afghanistan war, he suffers from PTSD. Faced with the reality before him, Jason begins to panic and hastily invents an errand in town, promising to return after the weekend. As his anxiety increases, he runs into the nearest shelter … the townhall / library / post office. Here he meets Sage Cooper, a kind woman who is everyone’s friend and no one’s girlfriend.
Well, it’s a holiday cowboy romance … you were expecting a realistic plot? The town residents include an innkeeper who fuels the gossip mill, a bartender / café owner who has Sage’s back, two couples who run the Price Ranch, a beauty-parlor owner planning a wedding, and Sage’s old high-school crush who is a jerk. I expect one or more of these people to appear in future episodes in this series.
It’s a fast read and there are the requisite hot-and-steamy sex scenes. Not to mention a great dog, Achilles (who is described as a setter in the book, but shown as a Labrador on the cover).
Jessica Clare’s Cowboys = Blissful reads.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love another cowboy as much as the last, Jason enters the scene. He’s a solider that has ptsd, and he is literally desperate for work. He’s so desperate that he lies and says he’s a rancher to get this job on Eli’s ranch. My heart went out so much for Jason. He was triggered when any loud noises took place, and had to check perimeters often just to feel settled. To make matters worse he lost his service dog a year ago, and is still having a hard time coping.
Everything changes when he meets Sage. Sage is a good girl period. She is too good, pure and has a beautiful soul. She’s a 27 year old virgin that has never really dated. I loved her character so much. She was a breath of fresh air, truly. I love a fake relationship trope, and this one did not disappoint. It was beautiful watching their friendship grow and bloom between these two. I love Jessica’s books because she gives us just the right amount of drama. She also teases us with a slow burn so delicious that when you finally get to it, you are literally panting.
I love these books so much, and I am sad to be almost caught up.
3.5 stars -- Apparently the theme of this series is "Jessica Clare makes me OK with tropes that I usually don't like." Basically, I just really like Jessica Clare's authorial voice and humor, so it is hard for me to have a bad time reading her stuff. I don't love cowboy stories usually (though they have been growing on me recently with the sheer volume of them coming from authors I like), and I also don't like romances where there's a big secret at the heart of the conflict. That said, this one won me over... all the cute doggos didn't hurt
Few things go together quite like Christmas and cowboys, and I can’t really say why that is! Here we return to Painted Barrel, Wyoming where the holiday season is upon us. Jason Clements suffers from PTSD after his traumatic experiences in the Navy while stationed in Afghanistan. Despite a lack of experience with ranching, he takes a job in Painted Barrel where he meets the beautiful and kind soul of Sage Cooper. Sage offers to teach him about ranching in exchange for Jason escorting her to a special holiday event. Sage is still a virgin who has never even been kissed at the age of 29 years old (why are romance books so obsessed with virgins???), but that may all change now that she has met Jason. The third book in the Wyoming cowboy series, I will say that despite some of my usual giggles at the premise, I did enjoy the depth of the PTSD storyline and how that impacts Jason’s character. This is a cowboy romance to it’s core, full of brooding men, a quaint ranch setting, and a virgin primed for the right man to come along!
If you follow me you know how much I love reading Christmas themed books. I'm not a fan of how early I have to read them but do enjoy sharing the ones I liked with you guys so that you'll have some ideas on what to buy to read for the season.
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe started out slightly slowly for me. I was a little lost and I don't know why. I'm thinking it was just how the author started it. When he met Sage is about the time it started getting good.
After that I found the story to move at a very fast pace and I was able to get into and enjoy the story.
I really liked both Sage and Jason. I don't know if I could have been like him taking a job at something I had no clue about doing. I'd be scared to death. I loved that he asked her to help him. It showed he wasn't one of those guys who though only another man could help him.
Sage character is a 'more than meets the eye' type. You think of her in one way and shortly learn she so much more.
These two just needed someone to be there for them in a way no one else could or would. I think throughout the book that they each not only learn about each other but about themselves too. This makes it a very enjoyable story. Nothing to complex just a sweet Christmas story.
Oh, I loved this book so much!
Why haven't I read this author before now?
If I could give this book more than five stars, I certainly would. This author wrote in a way that tugged every one of my heartstrings. At some point we all say, "every now and then a certain book will come along and once you finish, you are left will long sigh, a huge smile and a feeling like you've been awarded something special," Well that was A Cowboy Under The Mistletoe for me. A truly endearing, heartwarming, poignant story. I am absolutely going to put time aside and read more from Jessica Clare.
Sage and Jason.....
This is a story that you'll need to experience each emotion your own, so I'm not going to tell you anything that will take away from that. Sorry, no spoilers.
Sage grew up in a small Wyoming town called Painted Barrel. While she is friends with everyone in town, Sage still feels very much alone. Sage made a decision that once the Spring rolled around, she would sell her ranch and move on to a larger town where she can start over and hopefully find love. With her longtime crush (never noticing her for more than his friend) getting married, Sage realizes she needs a change. It's time.
Jason Clements has a story. An endearingly, heartbreaking story. He desperately wants to fit in, wants to finally call someplace home rather than jumping around from job to job. Employment is something Jason is struggling with due to his PTSD. While Sage had me sad for her loneliness, Jason's story had my heart bleeding. That said, I really appreciated how the author wrote his struggles so I could experience them with him. I was sad when he was sad. When Jason was afraid, I was scared with him. And when he found love, I was teary-eyed, not to mention, relieved.
This book was so perfect for a Christmas romance.
I don't want to say anything more other than this is a must read and I recommend you check it out when it releases mid-October. This book will leave you truly feeling warm and exudes that special feeling that is in the air around the holiday season. A Cowboy Under The Mistletoe has all the feels, and then some.
This is my honest and unbiased opinion. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe is a charming first-love romance between a former Navy master-at-arms and the sweetest woman in town. Jason Clements headed to the town of Painted Barrel and met Sage Cooper where she helped him learn the basics of being a cowboy in one weekend. Jessica Clare did an amazing job of showcasing the innocence and passion that is unique to first love.
Jason Clements was a former military man who is looking for a job. He has PTSD which has made it hard for him to hold down a job. His cousin gets him a job at a ranch in the town of Painted Barrel. He is both excited and nervous. He is looking for a fresh start and a place to belong but worried that his nerves will get the best of him.
Sage Cooper is the queen of wearing ugly Christmas sweaters. She wears them because they make her smile and to pay tribute to her late father. Her father's death is hard to bear so she looks into selling his ranch. Maybe she will find a new path somewhere else.
Sage and Jason come into each other's lives at the perfect moment. They are both struggling and vulnerable. Jason is new to the cowboy lifestyle so he needs to learn the basics ASAP. He meets Sage and she is more than willing to help. One weekend changes everything. Not only does Jason learn more about how to ride a horse but he learns how giving, compassionate, and selfless Sage is. And the feeling is mutual. Sage is starting to see a man who is kind and protective. She doesn't see him as a weirdo with PTSD.
I love their story of finding love and be a catalyst for each other in their healing processes. I adored Jason and Sage but appreciated Jessica Clare's ability to write amazing supporting characters.
Overall, I give A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe 4.5 stars. It was a delightful holiday romance that reminds of us all of the beauty and power of love!
This book is a perfect example of why I tend to binge on cowboy romances in the winter. There is just something so right about finding comfort in the arms of a cowboy, on a ranch, in a small town on a cold and gloomy day.
Jessica Clare did a great job with Jason's characters and showing how his past plays such a huge role in his everyday life. As someone who feels looked over quite often, I could totally feel Sage's need to find somewhere new in hopes of, in a way, re-inventing herself. Watching as these two came together as a perfect balance to each other was so great to watch. The way Sage helped Jason cope with his PTSD and the way that Jason made Sage stop feeling invisible really won me over and I couldn't get enough. Even though I could see where the conflict was going to come in, I couldn't wait to see how everything would play out.
I haven't read the previous books in this series but after being introduced to the secondary characters in this one, I WILL be going back to read the others as soon as I have some free time.
This book has everything that I want in a romance novel. A military man who is seeking solace in a ranch, looking to become a cowboy and a sweet heroine that has the perfect ranch for this “new ” cowboy.
Jessica Clare, the author, gives us the perfect amount of drama with the storyline and characters in the book. It was filled with so many emotions but it felt complete.. Sage is strong but sweet. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to be herself and didn’t shy away from conflict. Jason is a bit broken and struggling from his time in the service but they compliment each other.
I loved reading how their friendship grew into something more.
This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author, but I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
This story was sweet all way through. They just fitted each other so well.
Justin suffers from ptsd, he lost his support dog and he is hanging on by a thread. So he gets a new job as a cowboy and he can't even ride a horse.
He meets Sage, who is sweet, bubbly, has 3 jobs in 1, and he is so right, people do not really see her, but they expect her to be there. She helps him out and they become friends.
I liked how they become friends, how they become more and it feels so right. He sees her like no one else has. And she does not see the issues he has, but embraces it all.
A really sweet book, a tiny bit of drama, and a happy ending.
I liked the narrator. She did well with voices and the feel of the book
Former SEAL, Jason Clements, left Afghanistan six years ago but came back with a limp and PTSD. It's not been so long since he lost his service dog either. He have trouble getting used to civilian life again and can't keep a job. Now he's going to Wyoming and trying his hand at being a cowboy. He's gonna work at Price Ranch, with two couples and their babies and pets. But Jason lied about having experience at ranching. And in a sweet but oh so touching and heartbreaking moment, he meet librarian/post office clerk/munical clerk, Sage Cooper, who offers her help in teaching him about ranching life. She's preparing to sell her father's ranch and moving out in a new town. Hoping that maybe she'll finally find love, in a place where not all people know her at the endlessly single woman who used to have an unrequited crush on her best friend. Helping someone come as natural as breathing for a generous soul like her. But what Jason appreciate even more about Sage is that no matter how strange he may act, she never judge him. She'll only ask for one thing in exchange for her help; that he be her date at her best friend's rehearsal dinner. Jason and Sage quickly become friends but the attraction they're supposed to fake will become real pretty quickly too.
It's not my first Jessica Clare but that's the first book I read in this series (but it won't be my last!). I absolutely adored this book and didn't expect to fall in love so much with Jason and Sage but I did! While I'm no expert on the subject, the hero's struggle with PTSD felt so real to me. What I means is that it's one of the best portrayal I've ever read about it.
3.5 hearts
I'm finally reading Christmas and holiday stories. Cowboy under the Mistletoe has a nice intermix of holiday activities along with its being set at this time of year.  I had not read the two previous books in the series, which is not my usual way, but I still was able to enjoy this story.
The characters of Jason and Sage were well-developed but the others were not as much, particularly Greg seemed to be a cliche douche. I think the other two couples on the ranch Eli and Cass, Dustin and Annie were probably from the first two books.  Yup, just checked and that's it. I liked them and hope to go back and read about them.
Jason's situation was completely believable and my heart broke for him with the difficulties he had with his PTSD and losing his service dog.  Sage was much less believable, but in a small, insular town, I guess it is possible. She's amazing but well protected, especially when her father was alive. Plus she was stupid for Greg for too long.
The romance between Sage and Jason was totally believable though.  I loved how kind and supportive they were to each other. THIS is what a relationship should be. Plus sexy. I was thrilled for them both.  The addition of dogs to any story makes it better, too.
I read this because Jessica Clare wrote it. I loved both her billionaire and hit man series. I have absolutely no interest in cowboy or small town western romance, but, like I said, Jessica Clare wrote it. I'm in.
Jason Clements is a Navy vet with extreme PTSD who has come to work on a ranch in Wyoming in hopes of finding peace. Sage is the perfect small town girl, now 29 year old woman, who is longing for big changes in her life and finally realizing that her current patterns of always giving but never receiving in her relationships (both friendship and romantic) have left her lonely. Low angst with realistic emotion make this one of the best cowboy romances I've ever read. I would have liked a little more something at the end...conversation, groveling...something. I felt like the ending was too abrupt. Otherwise, a wonderful, sweet read. I've already put the others of the series on library hold to work my way through these holiday romances during the 2020 holidays.
Side note: Didn't realize this was part of a series at first. I haven't read any of the others but had no problems reading as a stand-alone although some of the characters obviously carry over.
I am Greg’s number two hater.
Aside from some inconsistencies (Sage “reveals” to Jason that she’s never had a boyfriend at least twice and canNOT make up her mind about her crush on Greg), it wasn’t poorly written and I found myself liking many of the characters (aside from the obvious).
People who are especially into the Hallmark, cheesy, “small-town-Wyoming-girl-finds-love” type stories would probably enjoy, but I don’t think I’d go as far as to recommend it.
What a nice story even if it breaks your heart a little. Sage has been the assistant in the mayors office for ten years and not once did she get a date, she even put herself on dating apps and all she got were dirty old men. Sage has pined over her friend Greg since school but he is marrying Becca in a few weeks and has never seen Sage as anything but a friend.
Jason needs a job badly so when his cousin recommended him as his replacement on the ranch Jason was happy, problem was he had no idea how to do anything on a ranch. When he meets Sage as he was having a meltdown she agrees to help him and soon Sage the woman no one noticed is noticed by Jason. This story touches on a few things that you forget about like someone’s loneliness and how to help one another.
ARC from the publisher
Between Tess LeSue and now Jessica Clare, I’ve rediscovered my love for Western romances this year. It doesn’t matter if I’m getting swept away in a canvas covered wagon or a rusty old pickup truck, I’m in! I’m especially fond of the ‘softer’ cowboys, because I feel like they’re harder to come by. Luckily for me, A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe definitely fits that bill.
5 reasons why A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe will lasso your heart:
1. A Relatable Heroine – I found Sage to be such a relatable heroine in so many ways. Her life is stagnant; she’s stuck in the small town she grew up in, and while she feels like she’s living life in a fishbowl, she also feels overlooked. She’s a good friend to everyone who knows her, but she’s unable to set boundaries, often letting people take advantage of her. In spite of all that, she’s not afraid to put herself out there, and while she could be shy on occasion (like when a sexy new cowboy swaggered into town,) she wasn’t one to hold back. She’s antsy to break away from her small town surroundings to finally get on with life, but not to the point where she’ll make a run for it if something (or in this case, someone) worthwhile comes along. Her heart particularly aches around Christmas because of the loss of her father, and living alone is such a sprawling place.
2. A Sexy Cowboy Hero – I loved Jason as much as I loved Sage. The events of his life have shaped him, but not in the way I’d think. I would expect him to be somewhat hardened; that’s not who he was at all. It may have taken him just a teensy bit longer, but he was also willing to put himself out there, and he was as patient and kind as Sage was – such a perfect match for her. He was always there to tell her just how special she was, and as an outsider of Painted Barrel, he was able to see the situation for what it was and offer her some ‘sage’ advice. (Har,har.) His PTSD was never pushed to the back burner in this book; it was relevant and prevalent, and his struggle was pretty devastating to watch. I thought this was portrayed very well, and the way it was manifested throughout the book realistic. And one last thing – this soft, sexy cowboy had a mouth on him in the bedroom!
3. The Emotion – I know I’ve covered it when talking about Sage and Jason, but there really was so much emotion in this book. From Jason not feeling good enough to Sage’s loneliness (and vice versa,) it really was a tangible feeling. But it wasn’t all sadness. Sage had a true love for Painted Barrel. She did everything she could to make this town a place it’s residents enjoyed and loved, and she did it so well. It was such a part of who she was, and it almost made everything Sage did for it seem so effortless. Everything she did was done with heart. And Jason made a furry friend that stole his heart, and the way he adored him and treated him was so sweet and heartwarming.
4. That ‘Small Town Feel’ – I’ve mentioned this before, but Small Town Romances can be hit or miss for me. It’s easy for the meddling to go overboard, but it didn’t feel that way here. Yes, there was the town gossip, but even Sage said she knew how much the woman loved everyone and just wanted everything to be OK. There were a lot of shop owners, and I loved the camaraderie and support they shared. Even when some of those people didn’t deserve it. (I’m looking at Greg and his real estate business here…grrrr!) Earlier pairs from the series also appear in this book, and I enjoyed meeting them. I can’t wait to go back and read their stories!
5. All the Holiday Things – The only thing better than a Small Town Romance is one that sports a holiday feeling as well; A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe didn’t skimp on that. From the snowy weather to Sage’s ridiculous Christmas sweaters, and from holiday shopping to town events, you get it all here. It was rife with all things Christmas, and I loved it!
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe was such a wonderful read. It was all heart, and I just love that Sage and Jason found their way together. They really deserved each other. Now I just need to go back and read the previous books in this series so I can get the scoop on some of these other couples!
This was such a cute, quick, sexy read. I love a good cowboy romance, even one where the cowboy is a greenhorn with zero ranch experience. Jason still stole my heart and Sage was the type of woman everyone would love in a friend.
Jason was wounded in Afghanistan years ago and has sort of lost his way in life. He's been unable to keep a job since his PTSD causes people to think he's on drugs or dangerous. And he does nothing to dissuade their assumptions. So now he's in Wyoming to work as a cowboy at the ranch his cousin formerly worked at since they're shorthanded. He arrives and it's so funny how little he knows about working on a ranch. He doesn't know how to even ride a horse.
It's during one of his PSTD episodes that he manages to find himself inside the town's municipal building. That's where he finds the kind soul known as Sage. She refused to judge him but instead showed him kindness. He ends up asking her for a 'ranching for dummies' book (apparently the town is so small that the building serves as the library, water bill payment service, post office and mayor's office). But alas, there are none. But that doesn't stop Sage from being the generous person she's known to be. She ends up offering to help teach Jason over the weekend the most she can with the two cows she has at her ranch. And surprisingly, it works (although they all know he has no experience).
Sage is such a sweet lady and she's always the ray of light in everyone's life. She was the definition of a blushing virgin. She's the lifesaver, the organizer, the best friend, the one people can count on the most. She's a bit of a pushover when it comes to her best friend Greg. She was in love with him throughout her teen years, but he always viewed her as the best friend and never anything more. And Greg always took advantage of her kindness. He was definitely an annoying character in this book.
Sage and Jason end up dating for real in this book after initially pretending and I loved how well they complimented each other. Jason didn't let Sage think of herself as unworthy of a man's attention and love. And Sage didn't let Jason think he was less of a person because he had PTSD. I loved the chemistry they had and how they were each other's champion. They were a really cute couple and I just wanted more of them!
The epilogue was great. It was nice to see how they hadn't changed much in those 2 years and were still the awesome people we grew to love.
I read the excerpt from the next book and I'm definitely going to read Becca's story after that intro!
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe
By Jessica Clare
The Wyoming Cowboy series, Book #3
ISBN: 9781984804006
Brought to you by OBS reviewer Caro
Synopsis:
Former Navy master-at-arms Jason Clements is down on his luck and calling in one last favor. His cousin has secured him a job opportunity as a cowboy working at Price Ranch in Wyoming. Too bad Jason has never even saddled a horse. If he can keep this job without his PTSD getting in the way, it’ll be a Christmas miracle.
Local busybody Sage Cooper loves Painted Barrel something fierce, but it’s time for her to move on. Since her father passed away, the family ranch feels too big for just her, and there’s no chance of finding a husband in this small town. To the rest of the world, she’s just another local fixture, known for her closet full of ugly Christmas sweaters and being perpetually single.
It isn’t until Jason shows up in desperate need of a cowboy crash course that Sage discovers a tall, dark, and handsome reason to stick around. And with the holidays coming up, Sage is in need of a date for a special event—maybe they’ll turn out to be each other’s best Christmas present.
Review:
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe is not just a romance book following how a couple falls in love. This book demonstrates how a couple gains trust on each other by understanding the troubles and conflicts in their lives. Sage Cooper is at a time of her life were she is done with waiting and is ready for a change. She doesn’t want to be alone and she wants more from life. Jason Clements is ready to make things work. He wants to change and not let his PTSD make him lose another job. So when these two agree to help each other, wonderful things happen!
I loved this book! It showed me a side of PTSD that makes me understand more what a person with it goes through. I liked that Sage thought of ways on how to help Jason and understood his situation. At the same time, Jason took the time to know Sage and how her life had been while growing up in a small town and how she felt about herself.
The book also shows an interesting perspective of how some people can be subtly manipulative. You think people are your friends and they are trying to protect you, but in reality they only want for you to pay attention to them. This drove Sage to think that no one could ever be interested in her as a woman to the point that she wanted to leave her hometown and the people that actually cared for her. Good thing Jason saw what was going on and came to the rescue!
It was also great to read about Eli and Cass, and Dustin and Annie, and how their lives have continued after their own happy endings.
This story is a great example of what a relationship should be like. There needs to be trust and understanding between both of them, something Sage and Jason established well. Jason loves Sage for who she is and sees a wonderful woman in her, while Sage gives Jason the understanding he deserves.
If you’re still not reading The Wyoming Cowboy series, you need to start ASAP. You don’t have to read them in order, just know that A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe will leave you hooked.
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe was my first Jessica Clare book but it certainly won’t be my last. I love holiday romances and this one did a fantastic job of being both a solid romance and capturing the magic (and possibility for loneliness) around the holidays.
Sage was a great character and I loved her development through the novel. It was wonderful to see her grow from being somewhat of a doormat to having confidence in herself and owning her take-charge personality. Plus the author did a great job of pointing out the toxic aspects of Sage’s relationship with Greg. I also adored her relationship with Jason and how they both grew together.
I can’t speak for how well the PTSD rep was written but I loved that Clare took a lot of care to show that Jason wasn’t broken or damaged. And the bit about support dogs definitely opened my eyes.
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe is definitely going to be kept on my shelf of Christmas books. I’m looking forward to reading it again next year (and perhaps trying to bake some of the cookies that Sage did!).
So I bought this book because I needed a Christmas time romance. I didn't realize it was part of a series. Lucky for me it can be read as a stand alone (not really devoting my time to new or old series right now).
I give the book 3.5 stars. I liked the book a lot. Sage is a small town girl looking for love and ready to leave the small town life for the big city. Jason is an ex-Navy man who is suffering from PTSD. He moved to the small town for work but is afraid his PTSD will be found out. He recently left his last job because of it. Sage is the nice girl next door. She's kind hearted and helps everyone in town. She has been in love with Greg, the town hottie for most of her life but he has only ever seen her as a friend. He uses her kindness to his advantage (terrible person).
Sage helps Jason become a cowboy and Jason helps Sage to realize how beautiful she is inside and out. Jason and Sage are really good together. I liked most of the characters and maybe in the future I will read some of the additional books in the series.
It's December in Painted Barrel, Wyoming, time for Christmas celebrations. The residents of small-town Painted Barrel know how to celebrate the holiday.
Who takes a job as a cowboy on a cattle ranch with no experience with ranching or cattle and doesn't even know how to ride a horse? Former Navy Master-at-Arms Jason Clements, that's who. And he really, really needs this job. Call him desperate. Jason suffers from PTSD after a tramatic experience in Afghanistan and add to that he lost his support dog so he's in a world of hurt. When he first arrives in Painted Barrel he meets a most generous soul, Sage Cooper. Jason doesn't know why but he opens up to Sage when they first meet and the end result is that Sage will give Jason a crash course in ranching. In return she asks Jason to escort her to a special event. Did I mention that Sage is twenty-nine and has never been kissed? Hasn't ever been out on a date? Well, there's all that. Will Sage's crash course save Jason's job? How will their date turn out? Guess you will just have to read the book to find out.
A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe by Jessica Clare is the third book in her Wyoming Cowboy series. Seems each book in this series gets better and better. The storyline is quite interesting. How Jason's PTSD affects him is heart-wrenching. Ms. Clare has a truly fascinating character in Jason. She depicts Sage as a big-hearted, generous woman who cares deeply for her friends and the town. She is the perfect partner for Jason. The dialogue, especially the texts, between Sage and Jason is very entertaining. So much fun to read! The small town atmosphere and Christmas festivities are a delight to read. All in all this is a fun, very entertaining Christmas read.
This was cute! I don’t think the writing was fantastic, it kind of felt like a much older person writing it… I kept thinking, people that age just don’t talk like that. It’s a sweet and simple story, I liked both Jason and Sage, they had a nice connection. This is definitely insta love, Sage is very innocent and naive but very sweet. Jason is head over heels and this has a lot of repetitive inner monologue and dialogue about how sweet and nice she is and how she deserves better than him. This is a bit of a slow burn, it does get a touch repetitive and boring towards the end, the spicy scenes were over detailed, less connection more description on everything happening. This doesn’t have a huge Christmas storyline but it’s short, cute and sweet!
I was worried Sage would be a doormat in this, but she wasn’t! I absolutely loved both characters, and all the supporting characters as well. This was a sweet, beautiful book. I took away a star because I just wasn’t quite sold on her never having kissed anyone...ever. For someone like her, it didn’t make total sense.
